Chicago cops have been deluged with tips about who might have shot Hadiya Pendleton, the high school sophomore killed a week after she performed during President Barack Obama's inaugural festivities.
"Fortunately, the community is stepping up and giving us everything that they've got, from rumors to whatever they know," Police Supt. Garry McCarthy told NBC Chicago on Friday.
"Something's gonna pan out."
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has appealed to city residents to drop the no-snitching credo of the streets and come forward with any leads about Pendleton's killer.
Police and clergy also have offered a $40,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the gunman who opened fire on a group of teens gathered in a park after school Tuesday, apparently mistaking them for rival gang members.
Pendleton, 15, was shot in the back, collapsed a block away and died at a hospital. The honor student quickly became the face of Chicago's stubborn gun problem.
The city leads the nation in gun seizures, and its murder rate has been edging up while other cities have been trending downward. More than 500 people were slain there last year, and last month was its bloodiest January in a decade.
On Friday morning, a woman was shot and killed when a van pulled alongside her van on Lake Shore Drive and a gunman fired up to 14 rounds. Police said the shooting was related to gang and drug activity.

The biggest threat to society is not legally owned guns, but guns in the hands of gangs and thugz. And as has been said already, until the african american community stops the "no snitching" mentality the problem will continue.

The article refers to "Chicago's stubborn gun problem". What Chicago and every other city in this country has is a stubborn drug and gang problem. Why aren't people out there demanding drug and gang control. I don't think anybody wants to touch the gang thing.

I'm sure the community would love to find the scumbag who fired those shots. The "no snitching" rule exists as a weapon of fear of reprisal: you talk to the authorities, you get targeted by these same worthless thugs. Who but a criminal would clam up just to "say no" to helping the authorities at a sickening time like this?

Notice that the liberal press isn't covering the story of how an armed guard stop a shooter today at an Atlanta school. Could it be the NRA's call for armed guards in schools working bothers the liberals so they can't report on it!

ANYONE can be bought for the right price. When you offer a needy person or family who has information about this crime $30,000 they are gonna sing like they never heard the phrase "no snitching". I foresee this thug being identified and hopefully captured in the near future.

Really? Chicago has a stubborn gun problem? They have the most strict gun laws and taxes regarding guns in the nation. A prime example that guns arent the problem. I really hope the community steps up on this one, this young woman had so much going for her, and she and her family deserve some justice. It is just sad how this turned out.
This shooter has no respect for anyone and they need to stop him/her as soon as possible, before he hurts someone else.
And while they are at it why don't they turn in the rest of them. It is hard for society to have sympathy for a community when that community doesn't want to do anything to stop the violence, particularly over some unspoken street gang BS. I understand if you don't trust the police many of us do not, but you should draw the line with murder.

The city of Chicago can be held up as an example. It has some of the strictest gun laws in our country and yet, gang members and other criminals seem to have no problem getting their hands on not only guns but guns that have been prohibited by law, i.e., auto-matic and semi-automatic weapons. As long as we continue to simply slap them on the wrist and not really punish them they will continue their reign of domestic terrorism on our society. Most criminals who commit violent crimes spent less jail time than someone who was busted for possesion of marijuana. I don't kid myself that murders can't be committed by weapons other than guns. There are just as many people in Chicago that are stabbed, beaten, strangled and clubbed to death. Not long ago, a homeless man was found dead on lower wacker drive. The cause of death: he was killed with an arrow shot by a compound bow.
This young lady, this angel Hadiya Pendelton was a light in the darkness to those who knew her. She had the potential to really make a differnce not only in her community but possibly the world as well. She showed so much promise and now we will never know how far she could have gone or what she might have accomplished. My heart aches for her friends and family and my prayers go out to them. It is only natural to want the heartless monsters who put her shining light of hope and change out long before her time to be captured and punished. Rest asured, if this crime goes unsolved by man, the Creator of all things will see to it that in the end-- they are punished.
