Chicago cops: Tips about Hadiya Pendleton's killer pouring in

Chicago cops have been deluged with tips about who might have shot Hadiya Pendleton, the high school sophomore killed a week after she performed during President Barack Obama's inaugural festivities.

"Fortunately, the community is stepping up and giving us everything that they've got, from rumors to whatever they know," Police Supt. Garry McCarthy told NBC Chicago on Friday.

"Something's gonna pan out."

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has appealed to city residents to drop the no-snitching credo of the streets and come forward with any leads about Pendleton's killer.

Police and clergy also have offered a $40,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the gunman who opened fire on a group of teens gathered in a park after school Tuesday, apparently mistaking them for rival gang members.

Pendleton, 15, was shot in the back, collapsed a block away and died at a hospital. The honor student quickly became the face of Chicago's stubborn gun problem.

The city leads the nation in gun seizures, and its murder rate has been edging up while other cities have been trending downward. More than 500 people were slain there last year, and last month was its bloodiest January in a decade.

On Friday morning, a woman was shot and killed when a van pulled alongside her van on Lake Shore Drive and a gunman fired up to 14 rounds. Police said the shooting was related to gang and drug activity.

Where are all of the undercover agents infiltrating these gangs and criminal enterprises?

Through transfers and deployments, military-affiliated gang members expand their culture and operations to new regions nationwide and worldwide, undermining security and law enforcement efforts to combat crime. Gang members with military training pose a unique threat to law enforcement personnel because of their distinctive weapons and combat training skills and their ability to transfer these skills to fellow gang members.

I haven't read the comments. I'm just not in the mood for political bs. What I see is a happy, well-adjusted, high-achieving young girl who will never realize her full potential because some banger with a gun decided it was a good day to kill someone. I grieve the loss of a promising young life and wish her family some comfort at this terrible time.

Unless we as a people bring morality and ethical behavior back to our society, this will only get worse. All these calls to tolerate every possible type of lifestyle people want to live breeds hate and anger. Hate and anger brings death.

Steve, can you please me more specific? Come on now; stop beating around the bush and let us all know exactly what are the tolerated lifestyles that breed hate and anger. If you're talking about the criminal lifestye, I totally agree with you. If your talking about oher knds of lifestyles, what are they? I await your reply.

I'm talking about tolerating lack of morality. Parents don't expect their kids to do anything. They let them smart off to anyone, be lazy, and teach them to expect society will give them everything they want. It begins to breed hate, anger, and resentment in many people.

I realize now using the word tolerate may have led someone to think of homosexuality. That was not my intention. I'm talking about tolerating a me-first attitude people have begun to adopt. These gang-bang killers are no different. They put their desires above all else and see others in society as the ladder to their achievements, rather than people.

I have to admit that I thought you might also be referring to the gay lifestyle. Thank you for clarifying your remarks. I totally agree.

Clearlight, well gays are dirty, but that's not specifically relevant here...

although I heard fruits have more interactions with the police, more arrests etc, maybe due to their inherent mental problems? Just speculating.

I applaud the residents of Chicago who are abandoning the "no snitch" code they have lived by for too long

What a shame this beautiful young woman had to die. Lets pray that someone comes forward with the information to put the animal who did this away for ever

This is the starting point that brings and end to the senseless violence we see all to frequently.

When communities come together and stand united against criminals they will begin to flush them out.

This will not be a starting point for anything. Once the media and politicians have gotten all they can from this tragic event nothing more will ever be heard. The circle continues on a downward spiral. On the names and players change.

You'd never know Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. I guess they just need more of what isn't working. Something must be done, gun control is something, therefore it must be done. Glad I live in VA where you don't need a permit to carry a gun.

I wonder how they are going to neighboring states and buying guns, unless they have a drivers license from that state they are not allowed to buy them, you are also supposed to have an address from the purchase state so I guess they are not being legally purchased in other states!!!

I hear so many people commenting about how bad Chicago is, but I don't hear anyone from Chicago acknowledging it. The first step is to admit you have a problem. If I were the President, I'd be calling the Mayor of Chicago and asking him what the hell's going on? If they can't handle the problem, and it certainly looks like they can't, maybe it's time for some intervention, i.e. the National Guard.

Following 1992 the murder rate has been decreasing, with an occasional spike, like last year. In 2010 the Supreme Court allowed citizens to own guns. So it must be all those mentally ill people killing everyone. Nope, it's the drugs and gangs, and the gun is the weapon of choice since it gives the cowards (gangs or anyone else) an easy escape from the scene.

"Besides its gangland problems, Chicago saw a major rise in violent crime starting in the late 1960s.[1] Murders in the city peaked first in 1974, with 970 murders when the city's population was over three million, resulting in a murder rate of around 29 per 100,000, and again in 1992, with 943 murders when the city had fewer than three million people, resulting in a murder rate of 34 per 100,000.

Following 1992, the murder count slowly decreased to 641 in 1999. In 2002, Chicago had fewer number of murders but a significantly higher murder rate than New York or Los Angeles"

an' it's sho' nuff down to like 530 now or something.

They be killing less in Chicago than in the old days. Wow---970 in 1974!

The counterculture/drug culture scum coupled with soft crime laws in the 60's and early 70's shot the murder rate way up.

Then the backlash and rightwing anti-crime policies took over in the 80's and 90's and the murder rate started dropping in 1991.

1968-1991 was a bad time for the urban areas. Since then, things are much better. Still too violent though.

I believe Nampa, Idaho has the same "stubborn gun problem", and even much higher rates of gun ownership, and yet the murder rate per capita is much smaller...why? Could it be that it's not the guns that's the problem?

Chicago has a murder problem. Other places have more guns and less murder. It has a people problem. Too many thugs wanting to kill.

None of which is the gun's fault.

Then when these gangbangers and criminals register their weapons and surrender what is not allowed the weapons can be checked and the criminal caught. It might take awhile but he will eventually be caught and brought to justice.
