Authorities have closed the books on the largest robbery in Vermont history without ever making an arrest, saying on Friday there was little evidence to pursue and the statute of limitations has expired.
Eleven years ago this week, a gunman wearing a ski mask walked into the office of Berkshire Armored Car Co. in Rutland, Vermont, handcuffed two employees and drove off in a dark-colored van with $1.9 million in cash.
The thief, who was described as having a New York accent, made a clean getaway. No arrests were ever made.
The FBI said on Friday it has closed the case, given that the legal time period for bringing criminal charges has ended and other investigations need to take priority.
"There had not been much development of leads in the case as of recently, and we have to make decisions about how to best use our resources," said Paul Holstein, chief division counsel for the FBI field office in Albany, New York, which investigated the case.
"Since 9/11, our priorities have been focused on national security and counterterrorism," he added.
There were no security cameras at Berkshire Armored Car, which is no longer in business, officials noted.
"There was no real evidence, strong evidence left behind," says Michael Notte, a former Rutland police detective who investigated the case.
Notte, now a Vermont State Police trooper, said he conducted scores of interviews in Vermont, New York and Connecticut during the investigation.
"There was a garage bay that was commonly left open," he said. "You could have just sat across the street and watched their daily routine. It seemed to us it was very casual."

national security like watching the illegal mexicans flow across the border in an invasion while drafting endless paper procedures, policies, and regulations for the Citizens to follow. Sorry but when I saw the FBI leaving the shores of the US and meddling in other countries, it was time to rethink the whole ball of S*
Hope he or she enjoys the money.
So I can spend it now, without repercussions?
Except from the IRS.
Rock and Roll !
DB Cooper strikes again !!!
do you reckon the two handcuffed employees might be breathing a sigh of relief?
I think a statute of limitations on any crime is ridiculous. If you are a criminal, you should be brought up on charges no matter how long it takes to catch you. The victims deserve justice. 11 years is nothing. 1.9 million isn't nothing.
The FBI is not a recovery agency.
Making an arrest here would be less important to those damaged than getting all or some of the stolen money back.
How about that woman in Florida getting off a cruise ship that was arrested in front of her hubby & children for a $75 fine she failed to pay 22-years ago when she was 18? That cost the tax payers much much more in $$$ than the $75 owed.
It could have been an inside job to collect insurance on the purported loss.
The FBI has other priorities.. Like framing idiots into committing acts of almost terror with fake explosives. Then pandering about in front of the media demonstrating how they are keeping the American People safe.
A close family member? Birds of a feather eh?
They are keeping us safe. There has not been a successful terrorist bomb attack on US soil since 9/11.
Every would-be terrorist has to wonder whether his associates actually are FBI informants.
"There has not been a successful terrorist bomb attack on US soil since 9/11."
Unless you count 'that "workplace violence" @ Fort Hood, of course.
Er...I said "bomb". Did Maj. Hassan set off a bomb at Ft. Hood?
This sort of "lone wolf" attack is near impossible to prevent. And not coincidentally is just the thing that upstanding citizen al-Awlaki instructed his followers to execute in his numerous on-line "chats".
you are as dumb as cum exodus-I suppose you are a member of the ACLU and you think these people who try to blow up buildings with fake explosives should be freed....
DAMN the HOOVER BOYS!!!!!! They SUCK!!!!!!!
There is a guy in Texas doing 25 years for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his family. Thank God we have our priorities in order!
Link?
Thanks Obama for giving amnesty to 800,0000illegal Mexicans so the would not be deported and could get jobs---thank God for a fine person like our President
When all these clowns get citizenship they will be gunning for better jobs. Therefore more competition for real Americans for good jobs that are scarce to begin with.
How does this relate to a robbery in Vermont, again?
Hey mister robber guy we give up. You can relax now and forget about it. Yeah right. The FBI is like an elephant, You know they never forget or forgive. The guy is probably dead of an overdose of high living and other exitement related disorders. Besides the insurer has likely put Guido and Vito Recovery Inc. on the job.
Another D.B. Cooper ? Did the feds check the back yard. If the case is closed all i can say to the person is good luck. Just watch your back.
This reeks of an inside job. I suppose if I were making 9 bucks an hour in an armored car company watching/guarding hundreds of thousands or millions, while leaving the garage bay doors open often, it sure would be tempting especially up there in Northern Vermont. Don't think for a minute the FBI is done with this case, only a fool would believe that one. They oughta be looking into the spending habits of those Green Mountain boys going back many years, a little common sense would tell ya' that. This thing would of been a cinch to pull off, even while getting no one injured.
But in all honesty, this is small potatoes compared to the crap being done to the taxpayers/investors yearly in stuff like QE 1, 2, 3..infinitum, TARP, MF Global(and similar), Dollar depreciation, ZERO interest from US banks, funds to foreign countries, etc., etc., etc.
One has to wonder if theres even enough agents to go around to investigate all this stuff never mind a measly $1.9 Million. It's all right tho the Feds will just print more...
I think it's a safe bet that the FBI already checked out employees.
You can't catch me,I'm gone like a real cool breeze!
QUOTE: "The FBI said on Friday it has closed the case, given that the legal time period for bringing criminal charges has ended"
Does this mean that if some armed robbers steal $1,400,000.00 they have only to hide for eleven years and they're home free? How about the theft of twice that amount? does that require twenty two years of anonimity?
Does the FBI always announce when the time is up?
It's some kind of a game, isn't it?
Casual outfit that went into business just to pull off this robbery and smart enough not to spend the money until the statute of limitations expired. Now they are out of business. Another surprise.
Finally! I can finally relax and stop looking over my shoulder! Drinks are on me!
11 years ago, people still weren't very concerned with security in Vermont. You could leave your purse and your keys in your car and noone would bother it. So, it doesn't surprise me that they left the garage bay open.
Nowadays, things have changed. We have so many thugs that have moved into our state and drugs have become a much bigger problem here in the last decade. We now know to lock our doors. If someone tries to break in, they don't know what they will be facing on the other side of that door. Many of our Green Mountain Boys or girls will have a gun pointed straight at the burglar. Then see how much money (or pills - cause thats what alot of these thieves want anyways) they take off with.
This is not really on topic,
Re: terrorists, they have accomplished their mission. They have the US scared of everythig, even their own shadow. They sit there and watch US citizens remove their shoes, belts, bottles of shampoo, hand lotion, knitting needles, etc. How many millions of dollars have been spent by TSA on scanners, etc? How many citizens are hassled because their names sound arabic. Jusy saying.................
Bush was "appointed" as the president, did a huge number of illegal things, then signed an"executive order" prohibiting him or members of his cabinet from being prosecuted for any wrongdoing while in office, even went so far as to appoint himself as overseer of Iraqi oil exports, why isn't anyone in jail?
