Subscribe to RSSA survivalist and his 5-year-old captive remained in a bunker in southern Alabama on Saturday as top hostage negotiators continued to communicate with the man. NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports.
A young Alabama boy entered his fifth day Saturday in a bunker with the man accused of snatching him off a school bus.
Police said Saturday that the boy, aged 5, has toys, coloring books, and medication in the underground bunker where he is being held by Jimmy Lee Dykes, the Associated Press reported.
The boy has Asperger’s syndrome and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, a state representative said earlier this week.
Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson said that Dykes, 65, told police he has an electric heater and blankets in the underground bunker on his property in Midland City, Ala. Olson would not say whether Dykes has made any demands, according to the AP.
“I want to thank him for taking care of our child,” Olson said. “That’s very important.”
While little has changed in the standoff since Tuesday afternoon and authorities are keeping tight-lipped, former FBI hostage negotiator Clint Van Zandt said on the TODAY show that patience may pay off.

“85 percent or more of standoff situations like this end nonviolently,” Van Zandt said on Saturday. Police have said that they are communicating with Dykes in the bunker through a PVC ventilation pipe.
“The reality is he hasn’t been hurt,” Van Zandt said of the young hostage. “Law enforcement doesn’t want to do anything precipitously that could cause anybody to be hurt at this time when the talking cure will likely work in this situation.”
A police source confirms to NBC News that this is the suspect, Jimmy Lee Dykes, 65.
Dykes’ neighbor Michael Creel told the AP that the man, who has been described as a paranoid Navy veteran, showed off the ventilation pipe after installing it about a year ago.
“He was bragging about it,” Creel told the AP. “He said, ‘Come check it out.’”
The first picture of Dykes emerged Friday. The man served just over four years in the Navy, a U.S. military official confirmed on Friday, and received several awards including a good conduct medal.
Meanwhile, the Dale County community mourned school bus driver Charles Albert Poland, Jr., 66, this weekend. Police say Poland was shot and killed while trying to stop the child from being taken off his bus on Tuesday.

Aaron Poland, the son of the slain bus driver, told TODAY that his dad died a hero.
“Every time a child got on my dad’s bus, they were no longer their parents’, they were his. He considered them his children,” Poland said, his voice quavering with emotion. “I know that’s the reason why my dad took those shots, for his children, just like he would do for me and my sister.”

I love how people blame the left and right for this type of mess. When you look at the incidences of mass killings or hostage situations there is a common theme outside of people just having guns. The common theme is a state of mind not associated with an every day person. There is almost always a psychosis of sorts. The guy in this case suffers from paranoia, which certainly can explain why he killed a bus driver then took a hostage and hid in the one place he felt protected (his bunker). The guy who killed the 20 kids in school recently had mental issues, and it was at least reported that he snapped when his mother decided she was going to send him to a mental institution. I can't think of a single mass killing in a school where there was not some mental illness involved. When somebody goes into their workplace and shoots it up, it always turns out they were suffering some sort of mental stress. The common theme is a mental state that is not conducive to rational thinking, not guns. Guns are everywhere yet in 99% of the cases they are not used in violence against people. You solve this problem of mass shootings when you treat mental health issues.
It is time we stop blaming the left or the right for these shootings. Banning certain types of guns will not stop these incidences from happening. Sick but true, a good 12 gauge shotgun loaded with buck shot can take people out just as quickly if not quicker than some of these "assault weapons" everybody is fretting about. In the case of buck shot, several people can be dropped per round. So does this mean we should ban shotguns too? Take away "assault weapons" and the mentally stressed individual will just move on to a different type of gun.
Simply put, these shootings won't stop no matter what laws are passed unless we take care of our minds. A mentally healthy individual like most of us on this forum will never in a million years commit mass murder.

There are pro gun democrats and republicans who support some gun restrictions, it isn't one side or the other. Being a republican doesn't mean he agrees entirely with the NRA as many republicans don't. Romney passed gun restrictions as governor similar to those proposed now. As for the Rock I agree entirely, he's a great talent.
Just so you guys know, they cant just gas them. There is a reason anesthesiologists get paid a lot of money and go to school for years. You have to calibrate the gas or you'll either do nothing to them, or kill them. Since the child is smaller than the guy, what will knock the guy out, will surely kill the kid. Thats why they cant do it.

As a fellow U.S. citizen I am asking for your help. As a father and someone who would be devastated if my child or children in my community were killed needlessly, as so many others have been recently, I am asking for your help.
I am doing this because our leaders in Washington D.C. are failing to do what needs to be done, they are failing us. They spend all of their time in campaign mode. Trying to figure out how they can use every issue to their advantage and using every issue to keep the People divided. Using every issue to try and paint the other side as the bad guys to gain a political advantage.
Gun violence is not a Left issue and it is not a Right issue, it is everyone’s problem. Our communities are being devastated with gun violence, Mass shootings, Hostage situations etc. and all they do in Washington is worry about what Legislation they can get passed and how it will affect their party.
Our leaders are not leading.
We do not need Congress to act to make a difference on gun violence. We the People can act now and make a difference.
That is why I am asking for your Help.
If it saves just one life it’s worth it.
What I don’t understand is why Obama will go out on national television and call for everyone to act, to be on his side to pass Gun Control legislation, but he doesn’t go on national television to address the nation and ask for the peoples help to end gun Violence. Why won’t he come out and say to the nation that no matter what Congress passes it doesn’t work if the States and the people don’t help to make the country a safer place.
Isn’t this supposed to be a nation that was created by the people, of the People by the People and for the people, and our politicians serve us not the other way around?
Why doesn’t Obama go on national T.V. and say;

Tell an Adult.
You could be going online and finding out the best way to secure your firearms for what makes sense for your situation.
We could be requiring conflict resolution teaching in school to teach our children how to resolve conflicts without resorting to violence. Isn’t that supposed to be part of the Safe Schools initiative so kids can feel safe at school and not bullied, etc?
You could be calling on your States and legislatures to Comply with the NICS system and report convicted criminals, people deemed mentally unstable, report people convicted of drug violations, etc.
If you are the victim of a robbery and your guns are stolen report them to the Police so that Law enforcement will know there out there and you are no longer liable if that gun is used in a crime.
If you have a gun that you no longer want sell it through a licensed firearms dealer that will perform a proper background check and make sure the person buying it has the right to own it and is not a convicted felon etc.
There are many, many things that as Citizens of the United States you could be doing now to help curb gun violence in the U.S..
You don’t need to wait for Congress to act or an Executive Order for something to be done.
This country is found on the Principle that the people are intelligent and capable of determining for themselves how our government should work and what our laws should be. This country works when people are involved and taking responsibility for it. Ask yourself are you doing what you can to prevent gun violence or are you just waiting for the government to do something about it?
Here’s a website (website name) with information on what you can be doing now. It covers proper gun safety, safety rules you can teach your children when they see a gun, how to properly store weapons when they are not in use, etc.

Why is it that ending gun violence is only a Legislative issue and what matters is what they can get passed and turned into law and not about citizens themselves taking a role in our society?
There are millions of legal gun owners and groups that would be more than happy to help make the country safer and help reduce gun violence. Lawful gun owners do not want guns in the hands of criminals and don’t like gun violence anymore than you do. They do not like seeing children killed by guns any more than you do.

Can I ask as question? What do you need a gun for? In particular, what do you need a handgun or a weapon designed for military use for? We read about what criminals and psychopaths and the desperate use them for, but what do you need one for? And "it's my right" hardly seems a convincing answer when what they're used for is slaughter of innocent law-abiding people.
If you're so afraid in your home that you think you need an assault rifle or semi-automatic hand gun, tell us. There is help for you if you're that afraid. But honestly producing, selling, and stockpiling these kinds of weapons is detrimental to the health of this country. People aren't using such weapons to protect themselves, they're using them for "fun" at the shooting range. Is it worth it?
If you're one of those individuals who think you need such weapons to protect yourselves from our government, we can set up an area where you can all go and live together and man the sentinel towers, and I promise: We'll leave you alone.

Not really. Guns keep the government in check and other countries at bay from invasion. Our army isn't invincible as most like to think. When Russia invaded Chechnya, they didn't exactly play according to the Geneva convention.
I use such weapons to protect myself, there are no ranges where I live. I escort children along with a bunch of others to the school, protecting them from wolves, bears, and bad guys. So yes, it is worth it. I guess to you, that isn't worth it. "If it just saves one life", right?
I would gladly live in another are where I can be separated from the fools of this world. Your going to need a big pen though. what's the statistic? 1/3rd of Americans own guns?

I am glad they were able to get him his medication. My daughter was (still is) hyperactive, and I shudder to think what could have happened if the boy was unable to maintain normal behavior (emotions, interaction, calmness, etc.) given the extreme situation. While many have a problem with medicating children, and that may be a legitimate issue, if this is the treatment that works with this child, it es essential that he be kept on his normal routine. Many of these types of meds can cause severe reactions if withdrawn without weaning the patient from them.
Hoping for the best possible outcome under the circumstances.

Maybe that's true, but I wonder. The boy is hyperactive. I once knew a little 9 year old boy who was hyperactive, and if he didn't have his medication, he was absolutely uncontrollable, zinging and bouncing off the walls like a ping pong ball. Maybe if this guy had to put up with that, he would have let the boy go a long time ago just to get rid of him. Of course, there is also the possibility he might have killed him to shut him up. So I don't know if it's a good thing he has his medication or not. Like you, though, I hope he gets out of there safe and sound.
My neighbor's kid was such a screaming hyper-active thermonuclear destroyer, the old man would have turned himself in for his own personal safety and some peace and quiet.
If I could, I would trade places with this little guy right now. I would shove the old dude out through the pipe.
It's Important to remember, though, that this child's problem includes Asperger's, which could lead to any number of different reactions to a stressful situation. While hyperactivity in itself is a real challenge, depending on the severity of the Asperger's, he could have major problems maintaining any kind of relationship with his kidnapper. Hopefully the medication is helping.
Still hoping for the best. If he can hang in there, we certainly can.
I know some "legal" gun owners who are not responsible as the NRA says all are. I know one gun owner who never locks up his weapons and has young children. When I asked him why he is so careless he said: it's my 2nd amendment rights to do as I wish with my guns.He said he had to have a loaded gun at the ready when the "bad" guys threatened his family. I told him he's much more of a threat to his family having his guns unsecured,then any "bad" guys.

How about parents start being parents? We grew up with guns and if my dad said "Don't touch this when I am not around" I sure as hell didn't. By the time I was 12 or younger I could strip and clean any of our rifles or shotguns and by studying the mechanisms I figured out how they work and it helped me my whole life. My kids know where my handgun is and they know where my 12 gauge is and unless someone is breaking in, they know dang well not to touch them.
But being kids sometimes they do. What then?

Too bad Alabama is so lax on enforcing the law. At the very least they should have taken this wack jobs guns away for now. But of course the NRA would have been against that. Deep down inside the NRA hates all and any laws concerning weapons. Any law can potentially hinder gun sales and their gun manufacture brethren can never have that. The same old excuse is always used by the NRA: criminals won't obey laws. So do away with all laws then.

I took ritalin as an ADD child when I was in grade school about a decade and a half ago. The drugs they give children for ADD / ADHD are literally small doses of speed. I am always bemused by the selfrighteous attitude that "If you don't break the law, what do you have to worry about?". Everyone breaks some law everyday, which under your scheme would deprive them of their right to own arms.
