Subscribe to RSSCHICAGO - Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson and relatives of victims of fatal shootings in Chicago urged President Barack Obama on Saturday to come back to his hometown and address the gun violence plaguing the city.
Before a march on the city's South Side, Jackson, a former Democratic presidential candidate, said America's third most populous city needed more help than Mayor Rahm Emanuel and police superintendent Garry McCarthy could offer.
"When the president shows up, it shows ultimate national seriousness," said Jackson, a Chicago resident. He also called for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to help patrol the streets of Chicago.
Gun violence in Chicago has been in the national spotlight over the past year, with 506 murders in 2012, an increase of 17 percent from the previous year. As of Thursday, there were 42 homicides and 157 shootings so far this year, according to Chicago police.
The issue received new urgency with the killing this week of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, an honors student who performed with her high school band at Obama's inauguration on January 21.
News of her death near Obama's old home in the Kenwood neighborhood came before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee began hearings on gun control on Wednesday. Obama's spokesman, Jay Carney, has said the Obamas are praying for Pendleton's family.
President Obama will meet with law enforcement leaders in Minneapolis on Monday, where a gunman killed five people in a workplace shooting last September. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.
Anita Crittenden, who lost a nephew to gun violence last year, said Obama, by coming to Chicago, would "get the leaders to think and step up and make some changes."
A petition posted on the White House's "We the People" website calls for Obama and his family to attend Pendleton's funeral on February 9. The petition must have at least 100,000 signatures to receive an official response from the White House.
Jackson led nearly 150 people on a march from Martin Luther King Jr. College Prep High School, where Pendleton was a student, to the park where she died a few blocks away.
"My greatest fear about the gun violence in Chicago is that we're adjusting to it," he said.
Police said Pendleton was shot to death on Tuesday as she and her friends were shielding themselves from rain under a canopy in the park. Police have called it a case of mistaken identity and are offering a $40,000 award for information leading to her killer.
Emanuel announced plans on Thursday to take 200 police officers now serving in administrative positions and deploy them on the streets.
"Hadiya wanted to make a difference in the world," said Shatira Wilks, a spokeswoman for the family, and cousin of Cleopatra Cowley, Pendleton's mother. "It's unfortunate that it would be like this, but we still hope that this can make a difference."
Not everyone participating in the march agreed that Obama should come home. Matthew McGill said the president should address the violence issue, but need not single out Chicago, "because what you see in Chicago happens in other cities as well."

This gang problem must be stopped from a grass roots effort. The people must begin to take back their streets and hoods one at a time. Turn in the names of all gang bangers to the police. Turn in the names of all the drug dealers and those carrying illegal weapons. They must also cooperate with police and their investigations. But as we know this will never happen. The gangs are to big and most members are now born into these gangs. Cradle to grave gang bangers. Sending them to prison is just sending them to college for more education in the field of gang banging, drug dealing and a host of other crimes.

It is easy to blame the school system . But the heart of the matter is that the parents are not doing their part. Let the kids run the streets day and night, don't care if they go to school or not and do not discipline them when necessary . You can not always blame the teacher for not doing the parents job. True the school system is a joke. They teach to the test and the slowest student in class. Many a good student is lost this way. The system needs a major over hall now.

FedUpWithFed - The meager "handouts"that are given barely help families survive. The problem is with the black community and black communities in all major cities. The people making big money are the gang bangers, the criminals, the drug lords all running the streets with guns and violence. They like the "mafia" lifestyle of money, guns, and big cars. "Street cred" is worth more than anyone's life.
Only the black community, itself, can stop this disease, with the help, not apathy of the police. If they "rat out" on a gang banger, then their lives and those of the ones they love are in jeopardy. If they don't, then their lives are still in jeopardy. Parents need to take an interest and become more involved with their kids' lives, in order to stop the attraction and pull of gangs. The police can't do it themselves.
In St. Louis, a man had charges dropped against him for torturing a pit bull of his. He shot the dog 10 times, hitting the spine and making the dog paralyzed for life, strangled him with an extension cord, and threw him in a trash bin. The dog was probably not aggressive enough for the fighting pit. There were witnesses who reported him. But, when those witnesses were called up, they denied everything, and the judge had no choice but to dismiss charges. The guy may have had friends intimidate the witnesses or they felt it wasn't worth the trouble caused, since it was just a dog. Unfortunately, the guy will probably get another dog, torture it, or worse, continue his thug activity of intimidating people in his neighbor. He might shoot and kill someone, too, but without people speaking up, nothing will happen to him and he can continue on his merry thug life.
Obama takes he doesn't give..It use to be just inflation...Everyone's salaries have been degraded and cut to part time..I haven't heard of anyone getting a raise for a very long time, except maybe them.

Sorry, but Illinois already has some of the highest taxes in the country. If it was a money problem, it would already have been fixed.

The problem with Chicago is environmental. The children of even good parents spend most of their time growing up with scum, so they themselves become scum. And it is about time our society realizes that.
My parents moved us from Chicago when I was 3. All of my siblings are moral upstanding citizens, all of my cousins are scum, living with scum, living off welfare. You can't have that many people living in one place and not expect this.

Despite all the hand-wringing and finger pointing we do NOT have a gun problem in this country, we have a stupidity problem. To be more “politically correct”, we have an illiteracy problem. A government driven education problem.
Our government graduates illiterates and we expect them to survive and prosper in the real world. Most Americans read at an 8th grade level, most high-school graduates can’t use—there, their or they’re—correctly in a sentence, most Americans can’t calculate 60% of 440 in their head if their life depended on it.
Chicago’s “11th Graders Meeting College Readiness Benchmarks” in 2011 were: 21% in Reading, 19% in Math, 11% in Science, 38% in English.
How in Gods name can anyone expect Chicago to fix their violence problems when their kids are functionally illiterate? Our criminal governments social “wars” on crime, drugs, poverty and illiteracy are abject failures. Now they want to add another “war” to their palate of dysfunction.

Education is the foundation for all the other “wars” we are fighting. Poverty, crime, drugs and violence are all a direct result of our children being let loose on society when many of them can’t even fill out a job application form.
This is our shame as a nation.

We are effectively on our second generation of illiteracy being graduated from our school systems. In essence we have the blind leading the blind. Illiterate parents trying to help their children is not a successful combination.
Yes the parent(s) can be supportive and encouraging, but when they can’t read, write, spell, use correct grammar or do simple math these children are doomed before they even start school. We not only have to educate the current generation, often times we have to educate the parents. This is a serious conundrum.
We already spend more than any nation, other than Switzerland, on education. Chicago spends over $11,700 per student per year on education. As I pointed out above the Chicago Public School systems college readiness scores were shameful. When the best score is a 38% proficiency in English, and the rest of the scores are 21% and below, the future for these children is dismal if not brutally poor.
Perhaps if Rahm Emanuel was more concerned with fixing the pathetic education system rather than boycotting Chick-fil-A and the banks that work with gun manufacturers there would be real hope and change. Instead he deals with all his indoctrinated social problems emotionally rather than with policy.
Our government run education system is a national disgrace. But the statists like Barrack Hussein, Rahm Emanuel and the rest of the Liberal/Progressives cabal like it that way.

Actually you didn't. Gun violence is the correct term. We need tougher regulation and background checks, We need, for our protection, 1 gun or rifle and 10 rounds. We, the people, have the right to form a well-regulated militia and to bear arms. We must follow the second amendment and guns should be well regulated.
We also need more mental health facilities available and tough though background checks. Gun safety should be taught as well. Gun violence must stop

Totally agree. The Dept of Ed must end. This 30+ year experiment of "one size fits all" has failed miserably.
Anyone under forty wouldn't understand that the education system was better and more proactive before the Dept's creation. We used to promote excellence rather than mediocracy. That mediocracy of leveling the playing field around the country in what is taught, how it is taught, and funding for such has brought us all down.
Case in point. Minnesota is one of the highest taxed states sending money to the federal government, and is in the bottom four of receiving our money back. Our education system has gone from being one of the highest in the nation to the middle of the pack. We used to be a trend setter in developing new and interesting ways to teach. We used to, as communities, determine what was important and were willing to fund it. That community involvement was then adopted by the state. Now, kids are allowed to sleep in class and still graduate and many schools are even eliminating the valedictorian because the search for excellence is not "fair" to others.
It is a bit of a political quagmire... he did make a trip to Newtown.
This child has become the the face of his anti-gun violence campaign, and she performed for his inauguration. She is from his home town, and lived just down the street from his home. It won't look good regardless of the reason he gives for not showing up.

Why, do the States send so much extra money to the Federal government that they then, in their infinate benevolence, decide how to redistribute our money to every other state and the world? How can we continue to be deceived that the government is doing all this in our best interest and not for their cronies?
We are a Federal Constitutional Republic. Our Framer's demanded that federalism be the driving force behind our Republics growth and stability. Federalism demands that there is a balance between the federal government and the states governments. The federal governments responsibilities are thoroughly explained in the Constitution which protects our Rights as described in the Declaration and the Bill of Rights.
Imagine, fifty independent states, fifty incubators of knowledge generating ideas to educate our children instead of some monolithic bureaucracy devoted to waste, fraud, abuse,corruption and cronyism. Unfortunately most Americans believe that the best and smartest reside in Washington DC. How often they keep proving that dream wrong.

The only logical solution is for the government to take a lesson from history when American cities were battle grounds for the Mob gangs when they were at war. Send in a special task force with instructions to destroy these gangs in ALL American cities across the nation as Hoover did in the 20s and 30s. Don't stop with Chicago. Blow them out of the water with the same ferocity as they use on everyone else. They have sold their souls and membership to humanity, so just destroy them as you would a rabid dog.

Gangbangers should never, ever be arrested. They should be shot on the spot, their bodies left to rot and stink up the neighborhoods they desecrate with their presence. What purpose does Jesse Jackson serve if he is not the one to do this job? He needs to make the rounds and talk to kids and parents and try to get the parents to see that THEY need to step up when these kids are little and point them in the right direction. How are those toughest in the nation gun laws working for you Chicago? I've said for a long time, "Get rid of the gangs you'd cut gun violence by at least 70% over night". Some of the statements by the Rev JJ and others are embarrassingly ignorant but true. The bottom line is they can't govern their own city and will surrender their rights to a federal police force. They need to fully understand what it's like to live under marshall law before engaging mouths.
Jesse should know this is a societal problem. Too many who don't know who is the baby's Daddy. The teens get their family values and love from the gangs. Add in in drugs and the whole mentality changes to where there is no value of life for someone wearing a different colored bandana. Unfortunately not even the President can change the culture of guns and violence in our society, no one person can. As with all problems, first everyone has to agree that there is a problem, unfortunately groups like the NRA will not even acknowledge that there is a problem related to guns. Fortunately many of their members do, but they need to realize that the NRA is really a lobby to encourage the sale of guns and ammunition and do not listen to their members just their biggest donors. Surveys have shown that the majority of NRA members do not agree with the stance of the leadership. The members of the NRA who are more open minded to things like background checks need to demand that they are represented too or quit the organization.
Again, I see it as a lesser of two evils. Do I respect or even agree with Wayne? Hell no. But with the Libtopian Unicorn Brigade that must not really ever read a history book or even live in the real world want to ban firearms, my membership is secure. Independent, voted Obama 2012.

The NRA is an Organization that is funded from multiple sources and is not dependent on Manufacturers Money, if you know more about the Organization you would find it is funded by Millions of the Little People. We act cohesively as a group and espouse the same values and representation. The NRA speaks for untold Tens of Millions, they are the voice for Every Gun Owner, not just members. And Yes Manufacturers do contribute, why would they want to bite the hand that feeds them?

Sea2see- how does one have to do with the other? Illegal guns and what the NRA is advocating have nothing to do with each other. Most criminals do not walk into a gunshop and make a purchase. Government intervention and the removal of rights by law abiding citizens will do nothing absolutely nothing to curb gang and criminal violence. The NRA, as do many people, do not trust the government to not use universal background checks as a way to control who has guns and who doesn't based on the governments own criteria. You can make surveys come out any way you want them to. Didn't the recent elections tell you that? As much as I want to see gun violence curtailed, I do not trust turning this over to the government. Look what Obamacare is really going to cost. Look at how the USPS and Amtrak are being run. Look at how the EPA is putting whole industries out of business. I have been to many gun shows and bought several guns and have NEVER walked away without a background check!!! NOT ONCE!!!! Even on the old broken down type! Their might be a loophole but I have NEVER seen anyone use it! There may be someone somewhere but the percentage is less than 1% at best. Most people that sell at gun shows are people that deal for a living, they own a shop! They actually care who they sell them to. The only way I have ever seen anyone sell a gun without a background check is someone selling them in the newspaper or on craigslist. Individuals don't have to do checks and have no way of doing them! We bought a gun this way before many years ago and we sold a couple the same way many years ago. I can promise you that I didn't sell them to a street gang member. These people don't get them at gun shows I can tell you that! The only way they get them is if someone that doesn't have a criminal history buys it for them which you are not allowed to do.

Why don't you compare the results of the Cold War and the war Obama has been running on our foreign enemies (not PC to call them terrorists). Reagan made his share of mistakes, just like any other president, but look at the results overall. That's what matters, not 4 years of nothing but campaign speeches and outdated ideology that didn't even play well in the 60's and certainly isn't playing well now.

Banning guns is not going to stop the violence in Chicago or any other city. The saying "when guns are outlawed, only the outlaws will have guns" is true. Do you think any of the criminals committing these crimes in Chicago or any where else, is going to turn in their guns, just because the "law" says so? No, they aren't. Do you think, as a law abiding, registered gun owner, I will turn in my guns because the "law" says so? NO! Hitler persuaded the people of Germany to turn over their guns and look what happened. Many governments have appealed to the citizenry to turn in their guns over the course of history, and invariably, it has resulted in wars, despots, dictators and factions taking over the populace.
Better background checks, longer waiting periods, better mental health tracking; those are all good programs, but, where there is a will, the criminals or would be criminals will find a way, no matter what the populace or the law does about it.
I agree, the drug smugglers are making submarines in the jungles to get their product to the US. If they can make a submarine I personally think they could make and mass produce firearms and get them to the illegal drug distributors in the States. The reason they don't do it now is because the profit level is too low.
Look at some of the armpit countries in Africa, the average citizen does not earn enough to purchase a firearm. When the "employer/warlord" provides them with weaponry...it could be the US in a few years.
There are so many guns floating around in the hands of criminals right now that they would never have to buy another gun! They will not run out and the only people that would willingly turn in a gun would be the law abiding citizen but you know what.... thats not going to happen and that is NOT even being considered! I don't even know why people are talking about it except to try and push peoples buttons and make someone mad. Even if they tried to pass some sort of issue through it would fail because it would be blocked in the house and that is at least for the next 2 years so all this worrying and freaking out is for nothing except to feed the pockets of the media that write these stories to get your attention! If you're going to quote the book, quote it correctly.... OBL had an AK-47 in the room with him. He had more than ample time to prepare for a fight. He was not killed outside of his bedroom. Did you even read the book??? OBL didn't pick up his weapon, because he was a coward, period. Stevie--absolutely, I have ideas to fix the problem, but they involve some pretty unpopular moves, such as taking kids away from families with a history of gang involvement, and raising them elsewhere in an environment where they do NOT feel entitled to have 'someone else' PAY for them, where they are taught that their JOB in life is to go to school and work hard, not just for good grades but to LEARN, and are taught Manners, common courtesy in behavior towards other, and responsibility.
Unfortunately, we have 3-4 GENERATIONS of proof that 'handing out' money despite bad/irresposible behavior (including having babies too young and too many and out of wedlock) etc. does NOT fix the problem, it exacerbates the problem.
The solution lies in the GOOD people leading, not preaching, and by the well meaning to do MORE to inspire ambition and duty.

Solutions - Here's some: Workfare instead of welfare. Mandatory REAL jail time for crimes committed with a gun. Juveniles treated as adults for any felonies OR their parents can do the time. Voucher programs to get the good kids out of the hole an into decent schools. Elimination of school unions. Kids hanging in the park during the day..parents go to jail. Free or reduced job or trade training and college for those under 18 that can stay out of the gangs and out of trouble. 1% consumption tax to fund on street policing, not desk jockeys, not swat, not detectives, real policemen, with guns that have clear rules of engagement and are not afraid of losing their jobs because they do their jobs. I could go on, but since I am a conservative member of the NRA, I wouldn't want to be called radical or anything.

If you were on a plane, and 4 or 5 guys with box cutters got up and tried to subdue all the passengers, just how long do you think those guys would last? As a Black American male not (African-American), the cries of the supposed leader Jessie Jackson and the people of Chicago request of President Obama is not realistic. Obama is not the answer to youth violence in Chicago. Jesse Jackson just wants to get his name in the news. There are alternatives to blaming everyone else for your woes. Blame yourself for your woes for awhile. When you find that neither extreme in the blame game is viable, then start dissecting problems for what they possibly can be managed at. The first thing is race on race violence. Second, the homicides are mostly not curable by assault weapon bans, as they are not assault weapons crimes. They are youths with pistols crimes. So now you've boiled the real problem down to same race youths shooting each other with pistols.
Their dispute, cultural value differences. The youth's have no schools which demand educational discipline. They have no jobs available, because they don't have educational discipline, and the few jobs around are controlled by union nepotism and cronyism, be they in the public or private sector. How did they get that mindset? The party machine workings of big city politics. Their own political leaders are in jail. If it's good enough for the governor, or local leaders, why isn't it good enough for the kids. So Chicago is one large jail mindset... because they themselves made it that way. There is no knowledge of Chicago being other than a politically corrupt place.
So instead of thinking money is the issue, look at it like money is their problem. They get paid too well for failed work. Too many kick backs, too many bribes, too much money to buy handguns that shoot other kids. The teachers salaries don't produce educated children, the police force doesn't produce safe streets, the jail system doesn't produce reformed criminals, the churches don't produce saved souls. Once the adults see what kind of examples they are, then they can start looking critically at the failed youth of society who follow their example.
I'd suggest they drop the firearms bans. Then everyone could walk around looking over their shoulder, because everyone would be outgunned equally.
Obama could make a huge impact by legalizing drugs and taking the monetary incentive of gang warfare away. Freeing up police manpower and the legal system to deal with violent offenders, and patrol and serve the neighborhoods. Tax the drugs, with the money enhance rehab, job training and education for these hardened neighborhoods. Anything else is blowing smoke.
Legalizing drugs sounds like a good idea, but I don't think that will solve the problem. Criminals will always find another source of illicit income.

It is true the states that allow for medicinal pot and controlled growing are doing very well with all the extra income. In Co Springs, an elementary school offered Chinese. There are High Schools in IL that can hardly cough up enough money for a Spanish teacher. Over the long term, it is the child learning Chinese that gets placed first when it comes to College admittance. (last time I read up on the college boards was 5 years ago) Tax the drugs, put it in education! Sending people to jail for getting caught with pot 3 times (3 strikes you are out law) while Wall St. racketeers walk around theiving from the average tax-payer is not what we want to see this country come to, is it? Who does the greater damage? One pot smoker or one CEO from Goldman Sachs or Bank of America? What I am getting at is we clearly have a privileged class system where rich men don't do time and poor people see more time. Its a disgrace and the prison lobby is a real problem. COntemporary Democrats have a problem with the concept of "illegal." Whether it be criminal acts by minorities, illegal immigration and illegal immigrant family demands, or illegal gun acquisition.

Your lovely city of Chicago drags down the entire country concerning gun deaths and violence. Much of the country is incredibly safe - just as safe as Europe - and it's getting SAFER!
Crime rates have been decreasing for 20 years.
But I suppose you don't know that, do you? You don't strike me as someone that has much of an education, or has spent much time learning about the facts and statistics.
It's easier to complain loudly when you are ignorant.
I remember that Chicago was also a crime center and was rampent on murder back in the thirties with it being the Mafia's headquarters and that was well before any gun control !! The tommy gun was the popular gun back then . I was alive back in those days.

Not Norway and US crime or sweden but Europe as a whole. This bull is being preached all over the place.I live In Europe and it is not safe. The Europeans do not report crime like they do in the US because it is bad for business Tourist Business. Here are two incidents, ones you dummies know nothing about just stick your head in the sand. Google this .. "Winnenden School Shooting Germany" and the "Erfurt Massacre Germany". Two well known cases but evidently you now nothing except as safe as Europe.. I live 30 Kilometers from Winnenden so talk to me about what you know?????
