This story is evidence that 17-year-old males have anger problems. If that's news to you you haven't been paying attention to life, Cory1980. What was the motive here? Were they fighting over a video game? Does the older male have an undiagnosed psychological problem?

From the moment puberty kicks in until age 25 no male is capable of proper reasoning. They all have a prefrontal cortex that's undeveloped and overwhelmed by testosterone. Unless they have proper supervision and enough exercise they can't be rational. Sometimes their impulsivity overwhelms some of them and they do incredibly stupid things that cause massive harm to others or even kill them. This is not an excuse, it's an explanation of the violence in our society today.

Where is this young man's father? What and who are his influences? Violent music? Other foolish teenagers, postulating and posturing? Take away the influence of strong parenting, and I do not mean spanking or corporal punishment, and kids are lost. People who are interested in them and involved with them enough to care about them and take away their privileges when they make mistakes make a difference in their lives. It's not easy to stay strong but it makes for better young people in the long run.

Parents who are afraid to take away the cell phone, the video games or other privileges when the kid screws up are creating problems. If they respond with inappropriate anger and rage something else is wrong and they require evaluation by a child psychologist and treatment.

This is inappropriate anger and should have been evaluated long past.

They certainly don't have to wonder what his next act of violence will be. This kid needs to be evaluated as soon as possible to see why he is doing all this violence....That and pay for what he has done.

Peridot-1693859, excellent analogy!! Parents today are not parenting. There is no excuse for not doing their job as a parent. A parent's #1 concern should be the upbringing of their child(ren). I have a very good friend who was raised in a bad neighborhood. His mother made sure he stayed out of and away from trouble. She had to meet each and every friend and their parent(s) to understand where their values and morals stood. Until he was in high school, she would not let him away from the house unless she or another parent was present. In high school he was not allowed to linger in parks. He had to be in his own house, an approved friend's house (where she could contact him). There were no cell phones in the 70s & 80s...just landlines. He had to phone when he got to the house. She would call to tell him when it was time to go home. When she was working he was not out of the house unless prior arrangements were made with another parent or relative...that included phone calls. His television privileges were limited especially on school nights.

His upbringing as a black boy in Cambria Heights, NY was no different than my upbringing as a white girl in a rural town in New Hampshire. We both went to private Catholic Schools with both parents in the home. The difference was that I grew up in a violent home with an abusive father that also molested me. Yet both of us turned out to be great people...owned businesses out of high school, went to college and have good jobs on Wall Street.

Today's parents rely on cell phones...so naive because the child can be anywhere but where they are supposed to be. PCs and laptops are the babysitters, most parents do not monitor what their child views on the web, TV or in the movies. A good kid is not someone who gets into fights, does drugs or drinks alcohol and has an arrest record (sealed or unsealed).

When I was 9, I had to be back home when it got dark and I didn't live in a city. My parents knew my friends and who I was with when I left the house. I think they would have thought it quite strange if I was hanging around with someone who was 17.

Neighbors say he had not been acting the same the past few weeks. So you don't try to intervene?Not every criminal has mental issues. IF IT IS A TRUE mental health issue, there is mental health available for everyone, they need to find it and get it, if they have a problem. Help is out there, they need to open their eyes and look for it, it's not going to come to them. It may not be the Ritz-Carlton of mental health but beggers can't be chosers. I have mental health issues, I get angry, but I don't run around being violent. My conditions go far beyond anger. There are plenty of places which offer mental health programs for low to no income and no insurance people. After my track record, I will be the first to tell you that these places offer a much thorough screening and diagnosis than private agencies. I give these places and staff members 5 stars. They deal with all kinds of people, mainly who are less fortunate. They get paid less than private practice, yet they are extremely nice, seem to truly care about their patients and always smile. I am not speaking for the rest of the country, but if Louisiana's mental health programs are some of the worst in the country, then the rest of the country needs to show me why they cannot provide the same level, if not higher level of care than Louisiana.

And if one boy was 17, and the other 9, there was no fight, just an attack. Was it racial in nature ? If a white kid threw a younger black kid off the roof it would have been headline news.

We unfortunately have become a culture that accepts behavior such as this. Parents no longer parent their children. They are more interested in their own happiness & fun & not interested in setting a responsible example of what a child is expected to become. There are no consequences for bad behavior. We don't hold children back in school if they don't do well, they become the next teacher's nightmare until they too pass them on. I was a single parent & raised a son to be a responsible man. To understand consequences, respect & be a contributing member of society. I did it with no help from his father or the government. My parents are dead & I have no other family so I did it alone. I worked long hours & still provided a stable home for my child. I didn't run around, drink or carouse with my friends. I understood where my priorities were. My son will graduate with his first degree in May & go on to law school. He is putting himself through school working two jobs. He understood & suffered consequences from a young age for misbehavior. He saw what it took to be a good parent. I took him to church because I wanted him to grow up with morals & a sense of right & wrong. He is a great kid who is a good influence on his friends & a joy to be around. I am sick of hearing how people don't have enough money. We have eaten baked potatoes many nights & have become mostly vegetarian not out of choice but because our budget didn't stretch to meat. I don't have a college education but I made sure my son understood what education could do for his life. Until parents start taking responsibility for the children they have & realize it takes hard work & that life isn't all fun & games & no, you don't DESERVE fancy things, you have to work for them, this country is not going to change.

I married, started a family and have raised 4 great children that are now well adjusted contributing members of society. This incident, while tragic and appalling, is more a commentary on our failures to recognize and then INTERVENE in a life that was already showing signs of trouble. I understand that young males are more impulsive but if they understand for instance that a car is a deadly weapon if used improperly (which I made sure my son understood BEFORE he got his license) they can make good decisions. I guarantee you even if he did get in a fight he would not think of throwing someone off a roof (even a second story.) There have always been 17-25 year old males. Why did we not have this type of problem in the past? Because our society would not stand for it. But we have become a society where everyone has to be a winner & there is an excuse for everything. to say we did not have this problem in the past is incorrect. We have an entire world history of violence and inhumanity. Many countries, including ours, were formed with violence. I think if we are going to address the problem it is important to understand the history of violence, what has been tried and what was/was not successful. No. It is not a new problem and the media certainly doesn't help. However, the scale is new. There used to be a few nuts but we have become more tolerant and we make excuses for them. I still say the biggest issue is a lack of people guiding these kids. I see the lack of respect on a daily basis. I was a late in life child born to a mother who lived through the depression. She always said there had always been bad people, there were just more of them now. However, we used to raise our children with a respect for authority and faith in something higher than ourselves. Now kids are raised to question authority and believe in nothing. Or they are left alone to raise themselves and if no one loves them enough as small kids or protects them, they do not learn to value anything, much less a life. They get power from gangs and money from dealing drugs and stealing. We have a crisis of society. You are right. Violence is not new. However the magnitude of it is becoming alarming. It used to be that as long as you didn't associate with criminals and stayed out of "bad" neighborhoods you were relatively safe. Now it is becoming more difficult to find "safe" neighborhoods. When someone goes into a movie theater or an elementary school to kill people we have serious issues. Remember when we were so surprised about Columbine? It has become so common place that we are no longer surprised when it happens. I realize our population is growing but the violence is growing out of proportion. I live in a good neighborhood but home invasions still happen. I live simply but if someone wanted to break down my door while I am at home to take my television I could do nothing to stop them. Unless I choose to arm myself & I may have to at some point. Until we have tougher laws & more responsible parenting we will see more and more of these sad testaments to our times.

I know no one wants to hear this or think about it but when most of us were 9 years old we were at home with our mothers! I was born in 64 and my mother and all my friends mothers stayed home and watched after us, were involved in church, girl scouts, boy scouts, baseball, choir, chores and homework. I think it is a shame that there are so many women that have to work and it is evident in the way kids are turning out. I'm not saying everyone was perfect but there was a smaller incidence of children in big trouble like shootings and throwing others off of roofs! A real mother not only made sure you did your chores and homework they taught you to share, consider others, care for others and have empathy for others! Probably the most important lessons of all! When did we stop wanting to tell our children no and make them be kind to others and say they are sorry when they hurt someones feelings or did something to them? I know women want equality but you can't say "If you don't have to sit here all day with these kids then I don't want to either"! There is a culture of violence in the black community that society gives a pass and blames past racism by whites. Those days are gone and now is the time we recognize the scales have tipped. 97% of gunshot victims are black-98% of the shooters are black. When 75% of black families do not have a father in the home, this is what we get. This nine year old lives in a two bedroom apartment with his mother, younger sister, and grandparents. He is quite bright in academics.

In spite of the grandparents and mother being home when the incident happened, no one heard or knew anything was happening until someone ran upstairs to tell them. By the time the mother got downstairs, they were loading him into the ambulance.

Peridot, I am going to take a big leap here and say you know nothing of autism and Asperger's. People with autism are far more likely to be the victims of bullying and other violence than the perpetrators.

you may take that a step further - People with autism are VICTIMS of bullying and other violence more often than PERPETRATORS of said offenses. While fits of aggitation are quite frequent in response to changes in ordered patterns, they do not lead to acts of aggression unless there is some other underlying cause of violence in the individual.

Some 9 year olds think they are invincible and God like till someone throws them off the roof, its another element in a sick society that teaches all the wrong lessons, some times even a child can screw up.

Violence in our culture is a direct result of over-population. Too many people in too small a space and no recourse to alleviation. Suppressed anger, over time, builds to the explosion point. This results in homicides, suicides, genocides... and it is something we never address. We always head right for the symptom (gun control) as though that will fix everything. No guns here. Just anger, which is all it takes.

And history has shown, over and over, that when the wealth of a nation is in the hands of a few, and more people have to cram themselves into ever smaller areas to survive, violence becomes the order of the day.

You do not see violence on this scale when people can afford to live - like a nice, healthy middle-class, like we had through most of the second half of the 20th century. Oh, yes, there is still plenty of violence, as people will be people and suppressed anger still results in violence. When people are crammed together like lemmings, eventually they're going to react like lemmings. (Lemmings are more polite, though - they kill themselves, not each other... ;)
