Cops: Teen threw boy, 9, off Bronx roof

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested after police say he admitted to throwing a 9-year-old boy off the roof of a Bronx apartment building Friday night, critically injuring him.

The 9-year-old boy was found on the pavement unconscious with severe body trauma in front of the five-story building on Nelson Avenue in Morris Heights at around 8:30 p.m., authorities said. He was taken to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

On Saturday, police charged 17-year-old Casmine Aska with attempted murder.

According to a police source, Aska told investigators that he threw the 9-year-old boy off the roof after they got into a fight. The boys are not related, but live in same the building.

It was unclear what started the fight or how the two ended up on the roof.

Aska's family did not respond when a reporter knocked on the door to their apartment.

May the Lord God have MERCY on all the people involved in this atrocity. Violence and destruction, regardless of how they are committed, have the same horrific result. We focus so much on the "tools" of destruction, that we lose complete sight of the damage itself... There are some VERY sick individuals amongst us... I am sorry, but this is just too terrible. I am heartsick... again.

I agree. And it's sad that this was preventable, it could have been stopped, if only adults would stop turning a blind eye and a deaf ear.

We, as human beings, need to stop turning a blind eye and ramming our heads into the sand. If you actually read a "full" article on the story, more than 1 neighbor actually stuck their heads out their doors... saw the child being dragged, kicking and screaming. Even if you "thought" they were only playing... at least make sure. I know the way I was raised and hopefully raised my own, if I had heard someone screaming, and even if I thought they were just playing, I would, and have, checked it out. In this case, someone even saw the child being dragged up a stairway. Did they think that was fun for the child? I at least would have tried to stop the dragging. Dragging IS NOT FUN. I would have at least said something, like "stop that, you're gonna hurt him doing that". Perhaps if anyone had stopped turning a blind eye and at least done that, this crime would have stopped.

But hey, guess no one feels like standing up for a child being abused, dragged, and even thrown off a roof by someone much more older and bigger and stronger.... until it's their own.

How sad we as citizens are for continually turning a blind eye to all that we see, everyday. We're becoming a nation of cowards and the violence grows.

First let me say that I hope that the 9 yera-old recovers fully.

Now as to the 17 year-old. He will probably have the opportunity to do this again as you are already making excuses for his behavior in your posts. the court system will look at him and take into account all of the lousy excuses that you have laid out, maybe incarcerate him for a short length of time in a mental unit where they will say that he was abused and didn't know what he was doing as a result and let him go.

I worked in the prison system for 22 years and have seen it over and over again. Revolving door justice is what we have in this country so its no wonder that there is no real fear of concequences for ones actions. They should lock his ass up for at least 25 years before he is even concidered for parole.but that won't happen.

Despicable crime....and it deserves appriate punishment. Read the NY daily Times report of the story and the poor 9 yr old was dragged from his apt up to the roof and thrown off while begging for his life. Poor kid was conscious after he fell crying for his mother. Rescue crews thought he fell off the fire escape until he told cops the perps name and that he was thrown from the 5th floor. He's now fighting for his life on life support.

Horrible story and if he survives it will be a miracle...not many survive an impact from a 50ft fall

In the time it took that 17yd old to dragged that boy up to the roof and throw him from it causing him horrible damage, if he has a bushmaster in his hands during that outburst of anger, he not only could have killed that little boy, but also taken out half the floor.

Number one rule to win a fight. Don't pick on anyone who is bigger, stronger, or better armed than you. That's why criminals are for gun control.

California has a 3 strikes law since 1994. 3 violent crimes you go to jail for life.

                      Murder is down about 50%

                      Rape is down about 30%

                      Robbery is down about 50%

                      Assaults are down about 50%

I think that this 17 year old would qualify as a 3 striker. He has 4 priors including Assault and robbery this would make his 3rd strike and he is OUT!

If you take the criminals off the streets crime goes down along with gun violence, knife violence, baseball bat violence and any other kind of violence you can name.

Maybe the Federeal Gov't or the other States should look into this law. It seems to be working very well here in California.

So, get your facts straight. Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot that you are a liberal democrat, so it is okay for you to say anything (truth or lie) to get the liberal agenda through.

Talk about not having your facts straight! Goatroper, there is no death penalty - it's not true, nor is anything else Sarah Palin said. Everything wrong with the healthcare reform, such as currently rising insurance premiums, are because Republicans insisted that preventative provisions be removed before they would consider supporting the bill. As you know, they duped the Democrats, as the Repubs didn't support it anyway. Now, back to the topic at hand...

Guess you didn't read the whole story, you can find it all over the net. The 9 year old boy was DRAGGED from his apartment where his grandmother was baby sitting him when the 17 year old neighbor who was there and he got into an argument over a video game... he dragged the boy out of the 3rd floor apartment, down the hall, up stairs to the roof of a 5 story building, across the roof to the edge and threw him off. And here is MHO of it all:

Be safe on the street's Npoe! safe at home, Nope! on the way to school, NOPE!!.Really sad..

Been to NYC a few time's you couldn't give me the whole city, at any price. Best thing I can say is SALE it to China sure they can use a new dump site...The counts are so over run with case's you can't get a trail date for 6 months, and the jail's are over full. The Towel heads have taken over the Cab Companies, the Gangs have taken over the street's, the Mugger's and Raper's have taken over the Park system along with the Pan Handler's... Drug Dealer's on every corner of the back street's......Ole saying (one bad apple in the barrel) Guess what in The Big Apple the whole barrel is BAD, From Cop's on the take, right up to The Mayor himself, Michael BloomBrain....Same in CHI-TOWN only people are safe there, The Police, Crooks and City Officials, Cops got guns, Crooks got bigger guns and the City Officials have armed protection, even Fox News in NYC has armed protection in and around their building at ALL TIMES.... Really sad about the 9 year old Child being threw from a roof top to the street below...Now his life is in danger of being lost for what??? How can a 9 year old child poses a danger to a 17 year old person. The 17 year old need his A$$ put under the jail and his mom and dad if he's got one right next to him... Let him fined out just how nice it is to be someone little SheHe in jail..He's a PUNK, and needs to be treated like one....Mayor Bloombill is more worried about what the people are eating in his NYC, then getting this type of nut off the streets.. James Bown, contrary to what you may think, it IS important that you learn to spell and use proper grammar if you want people to take you seriously.

I understand there's a good chance you had a crummy English teacher, dropped out of school, or had parents who didn't encourage you to read, but it's NEVER too late to learn.

If you really want to make a difference with your words, you need people to read and understand them, otherwise you're just spouting meaningless jibberish. I sense a lot of anger and frustration in your words, but I'm not sure what you're saying because your spelling is so bad.

Get creative and find a way to improve your writing skills. It could change your life for the better. Look what it did for Malcolm X, while he was alive that is.

First, actually read the whole story before commenting. Second, this was avoidable and preventable. However, I doubt you will even be able to grasp any of the following.

We are NOT teaching kids any problem-solving skills in school. Many parents don't teach them because they don't know how to solve their problems either. They resort to using a weapon or slapping someone around.

Kids are just imitating the violent reactions they see and hear, and that's just about everywhere it seems...
