The Iraq War veteran charged with killing a former Navy SEAL sniper and his friend on a Texas shooting range told his sister that he "traded his soul for a new truck," according to an arrest affidavit released by a justice of the peace.

Eddie Ray Routh also said he wanted to drive to Oklahoma to avoid Texas authorities, according to an Erath County arrest warrant.

Erath County Sheriff's Capt. Jason Upshaw said Monday that Eddie Ray Routh drove to his sister's house in Midlothian after the shootings on Saturday and told her that he killed two people.

On Sunday, Sheriff Tommy Bryant said Routh told his sister "what he had done." Bryant did not provide more information at the time.

Routh, a member of the Marine Corps Reserve, is being held at the Erath County Jail on $3 million bond. Routh is being held in isolation and a stun gun was used on him after he became combative over returning a dinner tray. According to Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant, Routh was placed on suicide watch.

People like this suffer greatly for the defense of our nation and it's freedom while others exercise their right to slander topics they do not understand.

Really? How was he defending our country fighting in Iraq? We invaded Iraq for no reason whatsoever - and if we had not gone, it would not have affected our freedom in the slightest. People are blinded to how we use our military (and use up our young people) by masking our misadventures in the hogwash of glory and "defense of freedom".

I love how the death of innocents and heroes bring out the loons that think their opinions matter. Go back to contemplating your bellybutton lint and how it fits into the big picture of the cosmos.

On another note;

"traded his soul for a new truck,"

Interesting comment by the killer. It's as if he was compensated for the killing. Does he in fact have a new truck? Given that Mr. Kyle had put a very big hurt on Muslim terrorists, to the tune of 150, it wouldn't be inconceivable that this individual was hired by Muslims to kill Mr. Kyle.

Well...I guess that pretty much Seals the Insanity Defense.

The "traded his soul for a truck" comment immediately made me think of the bounty.

But the other thing was, of course, that guns don't work for defense until after the first shot is fired. Sorry NRA, a gun in the hand doesn't stop a bullet, no matter how good a shooter you are.

noncoms - you know, if 2 former navy seals arent bright enough to sense what was about to happen...what hope does that give the rest of the population who thinks they are going to save their entire family with their cache of weaponry?

Svenolafson - perhaps it was a bounty by muslim terrorists (because those two words basically just cover anyone who's muslim, doesnt it?)...

or, it could have been our own govt...I gotta imagine they werent too thrilled with the ex-navy seals decision to "tell all" with is book deals.

and the fact that he made this deal for a new truck, leads me to believe that he was under the impression that he'd get away with this.

would you have that impression MORE if a muslim terrorists were paying you, or our own govt?

      @ muttonhead,

If you are so obtuse that you don't realize that service members don't get to pick where they go, or whom they will fight when they get there, then you are probably too thick to realize that it is as much that they will go as it is where they go that acts as a deterrent.

The ravages of war. This man obviously had a mental break down and continues to be in that state. We need to better care for all our war heroes, that returned damaged from their heroic efforts. This is a tragedy for everyone involved. I think Chris Kyle understood PTSD and I wonder what he would tell all of us if he could reach down from the heavens and tell us how to handle this. I am thinking Chris Kyle would be more compassionate and understanding than most anyone.

I'm thinking Kyle or Chris would have shot back had they known. Seems Eddie shot them with a hand gun while they were least expecting it less than 15 minutes after they arrived at the range. Who shoots someone trying to befriend and help a fellow vet. He definitely did trade in his soul. He's no war hero.

Paul - how do you know he's "no war hero"...he may have been a hero to some in the war. He obviously had issues left over from his experience.

How you know that? Do you know what happened at the range? Or are you just speculating?

Mr. Routh was a Marine, period. Until the trial, he should be treated as such.

agreed - these folks thought it made sense to put guns in the hands of people traumatized by war.

I can't imagine what could possibly go wrong.

Why doesn't this story mention Routh's victim's names? A "former Navy SEAL sniper and his friend?" Really? Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield deserve to be named!

People like you say Zimmerman was a victim, other say Travon Martin was a victim..

I think all you right wing quacks should STFU and wait until the facts are out on the killing, instead of drawing up your own opinions and then passing it on as facts!!

What is going on with Texans and their trucks? Selling your soul for a truck is kind of stretching it a bit far.

Why put him on suicide watch? Just give him some rope and check back in a day or two. If he can't tie a knot give him a boy scout lesson in knots. Scum like this needs to be put out of citizen's misery.

Yes and if he killed himself then you would say that Obama had him silenced to prevent him from implicating Obama in a murder for hire. I really wish you liberal haters would make up your rock.

ihateliberals - so you dont want to know if President Obama paid him off with a new truck in order to kill the Navy Seal who decided to sell his own soul by publishing a book about his time as a sniper?

im sure you guys are already spreading the rumor around that Obama had something to do with this.

Liberalism is a plague on society, it makes the healthy sick and the sick, sicker. It solves no problems, just goes round and round in a mesmerizing stew of brainwashed ideology. It has never worked in the history of our world and yet these morons cling to their hopes that one day, they can "change the world". Ask them what they want to change and what their "new world" would look like and they don't have a clue.

I was also wondering about the black truck until I found a more detailed report that suggested the truck belonged to Kyle. There goes another piece of the paid assassin conspiracy angle some are pushing. In his book, Kyle wrote that gun-range therapy was meant to be easygoing and fun, with teasing, jokes and bonding over beers and stories. Perhaps "I bet my truck that I can out shoot you" qualifies as teasing and maybe Routh didn't find it humorous.

Contrary to what democrats tell you, PTSD does not remove your sense of right and wrong, nor does it compel you to murder those who are offering to help you at their own expense.
