A week after Chicago teenager Hadiya Pendleton was shot dead, her killer is still on the loose -- but her family says they are confident they will see justice.
"It's just a matter of time when this person is turned in," said Shatira Wilks, a cousin of the 15-year-old whose death made headlines across the country, focused attention on Chicago's murder rate and became part of the national debate over gun control.
Pendleton was gunned down while hanging out with friends in a park near her well-regarded school, just days after she performed with a marching band during President Barack Obama's inaugural festivities.
Police suspect she was the innocent victim of a gang member who mistook the teens for rivals on his turf. A reward for his capture has grown by the day, and cops said tips are still coming in.
"This bounty is now $40,000," said Wilks, who is acting as the family spokeswoman while Pendleton's parents prepare for her funeral Saturday.
"I think the family member or friend of the person sheltering him is viewing it as a lottery ticket, watching it go up so quickly," she said. "And I believe that at some point, they are going to turn this person in for the money."
She said whoever raised the shooter failed society by not teaching him right from wrong and is now compounding it by letting him dodge responsibility.
"How can you allow parents to suffer like this?" she asked.
Pendleton's mother, Cleopatra Cowley, and her father, Nate "Anthony" Pendleton, are facing the nightmare of burying their only daughter this weekend. A thousand or more people are expected to attend Friday's wake and the funeral the next day.
"She has a large following in death, as well as in life," Wilks said. "And we are already seeing change in Chicago as a result of her death."
She pointed to the city's decision to remove 200 cops from desk duty and put them on the streets to fight crime and several anti-crime marches and vigils that have been held since the murder.

Sweet sweet baby girl. I am so sorry for you and your family. Can't even go to the park with your friends anymore. That is some of my best memories. When they arrest him, they need to keep him.
The only people armed in Chicago are the police and criminals. And Chicago has a big murder rate.
The police won't catch this killer, they catch 1 criminal to every 13 violent criminals apprehended by armed citizens.
The police and the politicians have sat by and watched an endless procession of coffins go by and done nothing. Obama has sat by and watched an endless procession of black children being buried and done nothing.
Arm citizens, citizens stop violent crime, politicians cause it and police just report it and zip up the body bags.
Obama's "organizing" in Chicago paid off, it's one of the most violent places in America with the most liberal laws.

How many murders were commited in chicago last year (ANS: 500+) and how many were commited in January (ANS: ~50 last time I checked)!? How many times did they put up a reward? Why the $40K reward THIS TIME? Why not every time? Why isn't EVERY single murder that happens in that town worth this much attenttioN!? The answer: because it doesn't involve Oblamer directly the way this one does!!!!!
The only reason this story is being sensationalized is to deflect and distract! If she hadn't sung at the ignorant butthole's innigeration she never would have recieved this much publicity!

Mr. Mayor, if you have not yet, meet with Mayor Giuliani and NYPD Ray Kelly, to assimilate information from these very successful men, to assist Chicago develop a plan, if needed, much like NYC to root out these thugs. I read your plea to reason with these knuckleheads, to stop the violence. Meet with these men, if you have not already, develop Chicago's plan, then implement it with the same vigor as NYC mayor's Koch and Giuliani. You may even pick up a few tips on fiscal responsibiity. And for $40,000.00, you can bet you bottom dollar, someone will turn that shooter in, and quickly.
And chicago has one of the strictest gun laws in the country. So somebody is not doing their job. It just goes to prove that they can make all the gun laws they want no criminal is ever going to obey them. All they do is put the innocent at risk of those thugs. And they can get a gun any caliber in ten minutes on the street.

Why not offer 10K for each and every gang banger that has a record and lock them up for 6-months. This is an all too familiar story, and yes its not so much about black on black crime as it is a problem with CRIME!!! I feel for this young lady's family and all my prayers go out to them, in their time of need. The girl is the same age as my own daughter, and believe me, my child means more to me than anything else in this world, as I am sure that most parents feel the same. But still in all, we as a people need to get past all the racial things, and realize that our children are at stake, and these horrible people who cause these horrible acts need to be dealt with in the strongest terms possible.

Not every bad kid comes from a bad home. Some kids have great homes, wonderful families, and fantastic educations; they just turn out bad. So for this lady to arbitrarily call the shooters parents "bad parents" is ignorant. That's as bad as saying that anyone hanging out on a street corner with others is a gang member. As far as gun violence goes...Chicago already has some of the toughest gun laws on the books...no assault weapons, limited magazine capacity, no concealed handguns, etc. and yet it is still the site of hundreds of gun deaths every year. This just goes to show...if you outlaw guns, the only people with guns will be the cops and the bad guys (in some cases they are one and the same). I wouldn't want to rest all my faith in the cops to protect me in Chicago that's for sure. Crime or no...I'd be packin every day in Chicago. Makes ya wanna move to Chi Town huh? Chicago is totally Obaminable!!!

Maybe Obama could visit Chicago and make sure one more child is not killed.

2)prevent the 5th Circuit from releasing emergency judgement
3) and the many subpeonas he has failed to comply with. oh
4) and the fact that the 4th district has reversed the lower court ruling to show he needs to show his microfiche of his birthcertificate...

6) Unfortunately, no judge has the balls or jacks to send him to jail.. Most ordinary citizens would be in jail if they failed to appear for a subpeona. Remember Clinton, even he appeared when subpeonaed for impeachment. But not Obama...

Unless all states adopt the same laws regarding guns...there will always be this kind of tragedy. My fiancee says make it an automatic death penalty for anyone who carries a stolen gun and kills with it. I also think we should do away with plea bargains. If a jury finds you guilty, the crime should be punishable as prescribed by law from coast to coast.
Oh you mean like Chicago's gun laws...wow they really helped stop this crime...NOT!!! Oh and why don't you let your fiancee do his own talking? By any standard, I've been viewed as leaning far left in my views with one exception...that is the right to bear arms. I live in Texas and have a CHL.

for Policy Analysis issued a report that indicated Texans with concealed carry
permits are far less likely to commit a serious crime than the average
citizen.
According to the report, the more than 200,000 Texans licensed
to carry a concealed firearm are much more law-abiding than the average
person.
The report illustrated that Texans who exercise their right to
carry firearms are 5.7 times less likely to be arrested for a violent offense.
They are 14 times less likely to be arrested for a non-violent offense. And they
are 1.4 times less likely to be arrested for murder.
I'm no George Zimmerman, but will absolutely use deadly force to protect myself, loved ones and members of society should the need arise. We see what "gun control" has accomplished in Illinois, (particularly Chicago), and it's a farce. Most members of society are good and lawful people. Give 'em the opportunity to apply for a license that affords them the same protection standards I enjoy and you will see violent crime drop at the same rate as it has in Texas since enactment of the CHL.
I want just one of these dumbass liberals to explain to me how taking my gun away would have saved this young victim. It's because of the stupid restrictive gun laws in Chicago that are directly to blame for this.
