Snowstorm alert: Northeast braces for possible winter 'blockbuster'

Published at 6:05 a.m. ET: A winter storm heading for the Northeast could bring major snowfall to upstate New York and New England on Friday and into the weekend – but forecasts are divided on its potential impact.

A clipper from the north is expected to combine with a rainy storm moving through the South to create a snowstorm for many parts of the region late Friday and Saturday, according to Weather Channel meteorologist Kevin Roth.

However, there is still some uncertainty on exactly where and when the two systems combine, he said.

For cities such as Boston, the changing forecast could mean the difference between an icy nuisance and a major winter storm that would dump up to 2 feet of snow, bringing widespread disruption.

“The European model, which is the generally the best model we have, has continued to insist there is going to be this really big storm but the other models are not bullish on it at all,” the Weather Channel’s Carl Parker said. “The difference is -- will it be a blockbuster for places like Boston?”

The last time Boston had one foot of snow was in January 2011.

Most of the I-95 corridor is already set for heavy rain on Friday.

/

Ice and snow changes our environment, as winter engulfs our world.

Under the European model, the whole region would see significant snow but up to 2 feet would be dumped on Massachusetts – including Boston – and southern Maine overnight Friday.

That level of snow is “potentially life-threatening,” the Weather Channel’s Chris Warren warned.

However, other U.S. models show the two systems combining further to the east, meaning there would still be heavy snow in northern New England but cities such as Boston could receive as little as 2 inches.

OK staff writers and weather people just what do you consider to be UPSTATE NEW YORK? Anything north of Yonkers? I live in the Rochester NY area, now that's what I'd call UPSTATE!!!

Americans of today are pathetic. Its almost as if its never snowed in New England in the winter, despite the fact it does every year. The reaction around here to snow lately me wonders whether we've been infected by people from New Orleans. Will we just stand outside and die in the snow?

Probably some will die from just that Skibum.

The Legislators and fearless leader have made it o.k. to live high on the hog paid for by the government which believe me gets him much support and caused him to get re-elected.

This has mandated that those people probably will be to Lazy to put on a coat before they go outside then die because when they fall down due to the Fact that they are to Fat to get up and save themselves from a otherwise fun-filled humorous adventure.

The only pathetic ones I see are the weathermen. I don't see any panic up here in MA. It's business as usual.

Chosen - what does a potential big snow storm have to do with the legislators? Gotta toss in that BS at every opportunity, regardless if it has any bearing on the topic or not. Are you into shock and awe? If so, you have feebly succeeded.

...hate to break it to you..but it only snowed twice last year... once in the fall... it didn't really snow in NE last winter.... now.. the year before... that was NUTS!... just sayin...

Since when is a foot of snow in Mass or NH a "BLOCKBUSTER"?

Blizzard of 78 was a "BLOCKBUSTER"...

C'mon MSN stop with the overdramatizations already...

I think yesterday was the 35th anniversary of the blizzard of '78. I was just a kid but it was great - from a kid's point of view, of course. But there were some deaths, I believe. It was a nasty one.

              #32.1 - Wed Feb 6, 2013 10:54 AM EST

The blizzard of 1978 was memorable for more than just the 27" of snow Boston received. The storm surge actually swamped most of the coastline and sank the ship bar at Anthony's Pier 4 restaurant. It also took all but 3 parking spaces from the former Nauset Light beach on cape Cod. What I recall the most is being in one of the 10,000 cars stranded under almost three feet snow on route 128 and actually walking home 14 miles through the blizzard. There were also nice memories of entire neighborhoods banding together to dig each other out during the 5 days the state was entirely closed. The myth is that it wasn't predicted because it was, but a heavy build up of snow was the death knell for rear wheel drive cars on bias ply tires.

I hate the snow. For the last few weeks we've had rain, gloom and dustings of snow. I'm tired of cleaning off my car, spreading rock salt and then constantly taking the car to the car was to get the slop off. I'm moving back to FL and nuts on this.

Wait until Thursday morning and listen to your local forecaster. I live in New Hampshire (southern) and I think that the folks at Accu weather, Weather Channel, CNN, etc all believe that the country ends at Boston.

My sister lives in Pennsylvania and she has often called and asked how we survived. She is surprised when I say "what snow". Other times we dumped on and she heard we were having 50 degree weather.

Mike at WMUR gets right for NH more often than not. They are trying to predict the weather after all. It's not fair to expect perfection.

Well its been nearly 2 years since the last big snow storm in the Boston area. A foot is a lot but lives lost ? Will Gov Patrick close roads to all except snow removal personnel ? I doubt it. I hate to shovel. I don't have one of them fancy " snow blowers " like some of you rich folk. Damn ! It sucks to be poor.

I remember we used to go skitching when I was at UNH, on borrowed Burger King plastic trays. However, that was years ago, so this weekend I'll just fire up a Fuente Opus X out back and enjoy the SoCal sun and temps in the 70s.
