Snowstorm alert: Northeast braces for possible winter 'blockbuster'

Published at 6:05 a.m. ET: A winter storm heading for the Northeast could bring major snowfall to upstate New York and New England on Friday and into the weekend – but forecasts are divided on its potential impact.

A clipper from the north is expected to combine with a rainy storm moving through the South to create a snowstorm for many parts of the region late Friday and Saturday, according to Weather Channel meteorologist Kevin Roth.

However, there is still some uncertainty on exactly where and when the two systems combine, he said.

For cities such as Boston, the changing forecast could mean the difference between an icy nuisance and a major winter storm that would dump up to 2 feet of snow, bringing widespread disruption.

“The European model, which is the generally the best model we have, has continued to insist there is going to be this really big storm but the other models are not bullish on it at all,” the Weather Channel’s Carl Parker said. “The difference is -- will it be a blockbuster for places like Boston?”

The last time Boston had one foot of snow was in January 2011.

Most of the I-95 corridor is already set for heavy rain on Friday.

/

Ice and snow changes our environment, as winter engulfs our world.

Under the European model, the whole region would see significant snow but up to 2 feet would be dumped on Massachusetts – including Boston – and southern Maine overnight Friday.

That level of snow is “potentially life-threatening,” the Weather Channel’s Chris Warren warned.

However, other U.S. models show the two systems combining further to the east, meaning there would still be heavy snow in northern New England but cities such as Boston could receive as little as 2 inches.

What part of "Global" don't you understand? And learn the difference between climate and weather.

Just because the fraud known as climate change was just exposed no need to get touchy. Progressives were wrong with the coming ice age whining in the 70's so you should be used to it by now.

When was climate change "exposed"? No respectable scientist doubts climate change. And it wasn't progressives who were wrong in the 70s, it was one research group.

There would not be so much "destruction"if there were not so many frigging people.Pretty sure they got big snows a hundred years ago and without snowplows and all the other trappings we demand they managed to survive.Of course humans were quite a hardhy lot then and not like the wussies we have today.

A foot of snow here in central Mass! wow like that has never happened before. They make it sound like it is the end of the world. Here is some advice on how to survive this catastrophe.

    1. Get some beers

    2. roll a fatty

    3. Kick back and watch some movies

    4 Shovel snow after storm.

This has worked for me for years.

M^ as a native Bostonian I noticed the headline that we would get "hammered". Thats what I plan on doing Friday before using the snow blower and heading to Vermont.

Awesome movies, both versions. They really need to make another and explain what happened to those remaining.

So what is the big deal over a snow storm for an area of the country that is used to getting snow?

I live in the South and had 16'' hit my town on Christmas night. It's a mess but it melts. This story smells like the rising tide of the liberal media overdramatizing in the name of social dependance.

Two years ago we got a storm every 3 days from late December to late January. None of it melted. 4 lane roads were down to 2 and the snow banks at the end of my driveway topped my pickup truck to the point where going to work was a near death experience every day just trying to get out into the street. Doesn't always melt.

My point dillweed was that the media would seize upon the already dismal conditions the people up there are suffering through and point out the failure of the Republican Congress to appropriate the funds to save them.

All of this is caused by climate change. Big snow storms, warm winters, drought, pestilence and rising seas all are proof that mankind has ben bad for the earth. Congress should pass a law and do something.

None of these storms compare with the blizzard of 1978. I started on the Mass pike on Sunday, was opening streets up the following saterday in Worcester. People were comming out with bottles of booze they wanted to give me. A week is a long time to be snowed in with impassible streets. It really was a federal deal. The U.S. Army in a Hummer stayed with me for the 133 hrs. I worked. I was so tired I got delusional a couple of times, like stopping to wait for a hydrant to cross the street, thought it was a kid with a white hat on! The Army guy said it's a hydrant, did a double take and shook my self awake and moved on. When I did get home I slept for thirty hours. My 4 year old son asked mommy, is daddy dead.

Why do I feel like 20 years ago our weather forecasting nailed every prediction when it came to rain/snow/tornado warning. I can only remember 2 times growing up that a forecaster didn't pretty much nail how much snow we'd have (so we'd be out of school!!!).

Today, it seems like we can't predict whether it'll be a dusting or 2+ feet. Only way we can be sure it'll happen is if it happened yesterday, even then they still can't agree on what it was.

Look at the bright side. The White House can blame the dismal February economic numbers and continued high unemployment rate (going on 51 months now) on a winter snow storm in the Northeast. Wouldn't be the first time.. In March, they can use March Madness (too many people watching the tournament) and for April, unexpected spring showers. They'll also say they were too busy on other matters, for example, immigration. They'll never, ever blame the lousy economy on the lack of a coherent, realistic economic or energy policy. Been to the pump lately?

Now that the media has implanted fear into millions, the masses will race to the stores for food, drink and videos.
