Snowstorm alert: Northeast braces for possible winter 'blockbuster'

Published at 6:05 a.m. ET: A winter storm heading for the Northeast could bring major snowfall to upstate New York and New England on Friday and into the weekend – but forecasts are divided on its potential impact.

A clipper from the north is expected to combine with a rainy storm moving through the South to create a snowstorm for many parts of the region late Friday and Saturday, according to Weather Channel meteorologist Kevin Roth.

However, there is still some uncertainty on exactly where and when the two systems combine, he said.

For cities such as Boston, the changing forecast could mean the difference between an icy nuisance and a major winter storm that would dump up to 2 feet of snow, bringing widespread disruption.

“The European model, which is the generally the best model we have, has continued to insist there is going to be this really big storm but the other models are not bullish on it at all,” the Weather Channel’s Carl Parker said. “The difference is -- will it be a blockbuster for places like Boston?”

The last time Boston had one foot of snow was in January 2011.

Most of the I-95 corridor is already set for heavy rain on Friday.

/

Ice and snow changes our environment, as winter engulfs our world.

Under the European model, the whole region would see significant snow but up to 2 feet would be dumped on Massachusetts – including Boston – and southern Maine overnight Friday.

That level of snow is “potentially life-threatening,” the Weather Channel’s Chris Warren warned.

However, other U.S. models show the two systems combining further to the east, meaning there would still be heavy snow in northern New England but cities such as Boston could receive as little as 2 inches.

Here's the opportunity for New Englanders to practice thier victim stories, Put on the sad faces and claim some obama bucks. After all, it's worked well for much of the south and New York...

Here in NJ, we've been getting a dusting and 1 or 2 inches here and there.

I want 12" of snow or nothing! Something about not being able to go to work and whipping out the snow blower that seems like a good morning to me.

Especially when I do my retired neighbors front walk and they look out the window with a big appreciative smile on their face.

It's always worth a little tupperware full of home made chocolate chip cookies to me.. Mmmmm.. ;-)

Kieth,

Your post says a lot about your personality..... Not to mention how your mind works...

Poor Keith; he's a hard working man who contributes incredibly to society; a man who's tired of opportunistic, Obama-loving slackers whining and complaining because their house got destroyed, because they were without power for weeks, because their only car is underwater, or because loved ones died. How DARE they profit from his hard earned tax dollars.

Hummmmmmmm ... What a difference of analytical processes .. (garbage in garbage out)

Americans model 2 inches .... European model 2 feet .... I remember the European model being dead on for Sandy .... If they hit it again, we had better take a hard look at how they build the model ... and start adjusting ours ....

Keith, I've lived in MA all my life, and all winter long I read these media horror stories of "The next Great BLIZZARD" "The STORM of a lifetime" etc. It's all media hype 99% of the time.

Personally, I've always been under the conviction that the supermarkets are in cahoots with the weathermen. When the stores overstock they contact the weathermen to tell them that they NEED a prediction of a storm to get people in to buy things they wouldn't otherwise need.

And the storm just goes out to see more often than not.

This has been happening more and more since Katrina.

Calm down folks. It's just a storm. We'll survive it.

Don't worry keith, when all of that winter snow melts and creates major floods in the southern states along with the storm systems and tornadoes you can cry for your share of needed aid. If you live in the lower western states you will just have to wait for the drought and wild fires.

I seem to have struck too close to the truth for some peoples comfort. Perhaps we've all seen to many abuses of the federal handout wagon.

It seems that for many communities FEMA has become a free money store, where way to many individuals, organizations and local governments fill up their coffers with obama bucks at the expense of the American tax payer...

Also you really should look into spell check you said "thier" which is spelled wrong the proper spelling is their, just thought i let you know that. Also to add on you said

Here's the opportunity for New Englanders to practice thier victim stories

victim story huh? well let me tell you what, They don't need any practice because tragedy happens people looses everything if the storm is so powerful so no they don't need practice. Maybe if you quit trolling and learn to have some respect you would be a better person than some lame sorry excuse of a human.

Actually Kieth, it's the opposite. Your comment is "FARTHEST" from the truth.

People died. There are thousand of people in 7 degrees with children still living in tents. Your post was deranged dude. Only because it didn't happen to you.

You're one of those people that say, "It always happens to somebody else..Never me"

Until it happens to "you". It's called "naive". You know, like stepping in dog-@!$%# even though you were looking right at it. There is no way talking yourself out of your BS comment. Like hitting "Send" on an e-mail, no turning back now.

On another note,

To= I'm going "to" the store.

Too= "Also" as in, I'm going to the store. Do you want to go "too"?

Have a nice day in your perfect doomsday prepper world since you'll never need any outside help in your life. Until it happens to you...

Creek Dog - kudos to you for helping out your elderly neighbors.

We've been getting the same thing around here - a dusting to an inch or so. If we get more, we'll just deal with it. I can recall one year when we had a lot of snow piled up, pulling to the end of the driveway, opening the door, standing on the car and checking for traffic, then jumping back in the car and pulling out fast when it was clear. I was never so happy as when the sanitation workers came and carted all that snow away!

Oh, hell, had to go back and edit - just read Creek Dog's latest comment! ROFLMAO!!!

Fully agreed on the government part. The money often does not go where it is needed. Many charities function the same way. 10% of donations go where they are intended while the remaining 90% is supposedly used for payroll and operating expenses. The ones collecting the payroll pay themselves six figures or more but ask fo volunteers to actually do the work who don't get paid. Kind of like government when it comes to disaster aid.

Point out the obvious, that being that the handout mentality of the federal government is structurally flawed and suddenly we're surrounded by those with terrible stories of hardship. Completely ignoring the factual nature of the comment.

I'll repeat it again, FEMA has in many cases become a free money store, where Local governments, orgainzations and individuals flock to get the obama bucks being handed out.

The more theatrical the underlying tragedy can be made by the press the more likely the money is to flow freely.

Those who come on here and pound thier chests about a poor friend of a friend who was affected by a storm, flood, fire or earthquake are missing the point...

While I agree with your diagnosis of Keith, please leave the gays out of it. :) Most gays support helping those who are in need.

      Keith,

I work for a charity that goes to NJ/NY nearly every weekend to bring food, clothing, toilet paper and other necessities because, get this, they aren't getting the help promised to them by the government.

Once the camera and the news left they were all left to their own devices. Do us all a favor and stick your head back in the sand. Stick to the things you know, poor grammar, bad spelling and trying desperately to satisfy a woman in your 3 minutes allotted time.

Not everyone is on a hand out or wants one. Some desperately need help though! Wake up and grow up, I am sure if you try you could be a decent human being!

I don't know what gives you the idea FEMA funds are "free" monies. The bare basic minimum flood policy excluding contents will run you a minimum of $700 and that's in a 100 year flood plain.

Next FEMA funds for the vast majority after EVERY storm no matter where are used initially for the repair of federal and state infrastructure, not for personal claims.

Continuing, you can NOT collect funds from FEMA if the ONLY reason you're seeking help is because of your deductible or because your insurance policy excludes coverage.

So now we've cleared up some common misconceptions, what FEMA can do is assist those who are needy, have suffered, with LOW interest loans to repair what's theirs. It's NOT free money. Never has been and never will be.

Even after receiving the funds. the States end up having to co-pay a substantial sum of Federal Aid given to them in the way of FEMA funds: anywhere from 10% to 50% depending on the total scope of damage. total number of people impacted, residency numbers etc.

But feel free to continue to believe what you want.

Great post voter in LA. It's amazing how uneducated people are that come on here and post about FEMA. It is simply a knee jerk reaction in these times for people (stupid people) to automatically think SOMEONE is out to take their money... It's pathetic how the government and corporations have brainwashed everyone to turn against their neighbor in their time of need because of the almighty dollar. The love of money will be our final destruction in this rotting country. How much did any of you really even contribute to FEMA? A fraction of a penny chill the fu*k out and if you are that worried about money, you made some @!$%#ty choices yourself to complain about paying taxes...My boyfriend lives in New Jersey and I pray everytime i hear of a storm that he is ok . GM Creek Dog - seems our US weather forecasters are like Carnac the Magnificent (Old Johnny Carson Character!) Cookies are good, especially fresh baked!

Northeast prepares for Possible Blockbuster Storm?

Somehow I find it difficult to understand that the "European" Model forecast would be more accurate than the model used here in the US.

"The European model, which is the generally the best model we have, has continued to insist there is going to be this really big storm but the other models are not bullish on it at all," the Weather Channel's Carl Parker said.

I guess the Weather Channel still resorts to the "Weather Rock" forecast

                1. If the rock is wet, predict rain

2.If the rock is dry, predict sunny

3.If the rock is in Europe, predict that the European Model takes precedence! LOL

Weather Rock? I remember the Weather Board:

                1. If board is dry, nice weather

                2. If board is wet, rain

                3. If board is white, snow

                4. If board is moving, windy

                5. If board is gone, tornado

Thankful I have windows and a phone to call those I know who work 3rd shift and can tell me how the roads/weather really are!! If I depended on the weatherman/woman here in Michigan, I would have been in a lot of trouble and truant officer's would have been at my door.

I'm gonna go get me a rock and board and see how those compare lol ;)

According to Prof. Judith Curry (GA Tech), from her "Climate, Etc." blog, the Europeans are years ahead of the USA in forecasting models. Despite the billions being spent (and drizzled away, IMHO) on "global warming" research here in the USA, the more practical and politically neutral forecasting efforts are being relatively neglected.

That's the part that pains me. "The European model, which is the generally the best model we have"

The last time MSNBC had an article that was proofread people used the word "Blockbuster".

Ripley: The European model correctly predicted Sandy where the US model had it missing NY. The big storm that followed The European model was correct and again the US model was wrong. So I for one with be getting ready just in case.

Mousesj, I'm in your camp on this one. The Euro model is one of the most accurate models out there. It also tends to dial in early on monster storms. Absolutely correct with your point on Sandy. The Euro was dialed in on that forecast for at least four days BEFORE the US GFS converged with it. Same thing is happening here. Euro was dialed in on this two-foot snowfall forecast for the past three days while the US GFS is once again late to the game in terms of converging with Euro.

My take on it: consider the Euro model to be your early warning system. Make your plans based on Euro, and if things turn out to be less severe than what Euro initially forecast, call it a practice run for what you're going to do when big storms hit. Blowing off a Euro model forecast is potentially a life-threatening mistake, given its track record.

I was thinking the same thing and I was actually hoping for more than just a few inches, The ground can use the snow cover as the slow melt will replenish the aquifers and reservoirs as opposed to rain that generally just washes everything into the creeks, streams, rivers and bays.

                                Further evidence of global warming.

The north polar ice cap is melting.

Water currents' flows are north to south.

Colder water and therefore temperatures are now being experienced to the south.

Hence snow storms to the south of the cap.

                                Really rather simple.

                                .

Hey there Nothing New, Oh and by the way the ice caps aren't melting, they are relocating as the poles naturally change their locations. Notice we live on a magnetized core of liquid? Maybe you've realized by now that all of the land and all of the oceans float on top of that liquid? Get out of your dreamworld. Yes they know there is a huge problem with the use of Chlorine, how it destroys the Ozone layer and why the death of the Phyloplankton (this is a big word for you maybe you better do some research) caused by the Uvb rays reaching the oceans surface is causing the buildup of Co2 in the atmosphere (since thats what Phyloplankton eats) This is the reason why the Doomsday Clock was created and the reason why it ticks towards the 100 year limit that the scientists from the late 1920's placed in action after Adolph Hitler discovered this Chlorine that he used to kill millions of people with. Trust me.. we are working to stop the use of Chlorine by offering Hydrogen Peroxide solutions, but we have to get Spoiled people Like you to use it. Unfortunately we cannot stop the earth of liquid to stop moving the land we live on. Maybe you and that Idiot Biden can help solve that huh?.

Here, here Janine. Not a big deal. We have the snow blower gassed up and the all-wheel drive car stuffed with our ski equipment. Once work ends Friday, in the height of the storm, we'll head to Vermont and ski. The only effect snow will have besides making the trip longer, will be less traffic and a more fun drive.

Where do you ski in Vermont? I grew up in Ludlow. (Okemo MTN to some) I heard Killington will be giving away free lift tickets in SoHo this weekend.

We're longtime Killington pass holders and drive through Ludlow every weekend, but don't ski Okeme. We do golf Okemo Mountain CC. though.

There will be very little snow in the Boston area 2 inches tops. The meteorologists are always wrong.....always.

LoL, so much for that fixxed display of the groundhog day sighting where they drug the tamed groundhog from his pen, set him on the ground at their convenience and where they chose to place him at their own personal discression. What a humorous and totally manipulated culture we have become. Hope they get 3' so they can call it a catastrophe because it doesn't match the dream world they try to produce falsly to please the multitudes.

The weather forecasting model I built one night at a bar predicts it will be 80 degrees and sunny for the next 3 weeks throughout the entire world. (This model may need a bit of fine-tuning)

After the impact of "Albert" last October I take these things seriously, especially for us old folks. I was taught like the boy scouts "be prepared", test the generator so worst case at least we can run the furnace and the well pump, got plenty of food, fuel for the generator, good supply of medications and lots of dog biscuits. This is New England, I hope the ski folks & snow mobile folks have a super wonderful bonanza to enjoy, helps the working folks who need the jobs. And my nephew who works for a local municipality would love some overtime plowing snow. It really is pretty darn stuff.......
