Duke students rally against anti-Asian frat party

Promotions for the party included racist depictions of stereotyped Asian speech and a spoof of the late North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il.

Updated at 4:14 p.m. ET: Students at Duke University in Durham, N.C., gathered Wednesday to protest anti-Asian prejudice after a fraternity hosted a "racist rager" party last week replete with literature that lampooned Asian students.

More than 800 people signed up to attend the rally on a Facebook page published by the university's Asian American Alliance. The alliance later closed the page to public comment, saying national attention had made it an inappropriate forum "for a productive discussion of how to improve our campus."

"Something is deeply wrong with Duke. Something is deeply wrong with our community," a representative of the association said at the gathering Wednesday afternoon. "... This protest is about the destructive prejudice that must be uprooted from every corner of Duke to make this place an inclusive and safe place for all."

The rally was planned after Kappa Sigma fraternity — which was allowed to return to campus last year after having dissolved in 2002 amid a misconduct investigation — threw a theme party Friday at which attendees dressed up in stereotypical Asian costumes, the campus newspaper, The Chronicle, reported.

The event was promoted through flyers and email messages that included stereotyped Asian spellings like "herro" and "peopre" and images of the late North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il. It was promoted on Twitter with the hashtag #RacistRager.

The hashtag was quickly overtaken by tweets objecting to the party, like this one:

Twitter.com

"This is not just about Asians, one party or one frat," Ashley Tsai, a senior at the university, told the Chronicle. "This is a consistent thing happening. We want serious things to be done by the student body and the university so that this never happens again."

The Student Government and and the Asian Students Association planned an on-campus open discussion Wednesday night.

The fraternity's president apologized for the party, writing in an op-ed column:

Upon learning of the deeply damaging effects of our email to our fellow students, we should have completely canceled the aforementioned party. The Duke Community in which we exist is one that we see too often as divided, and while our actions have brought attention to and widened that divide, it is our sincere intention to work to contribute to a United Duke."

The paper quoted Vice President for Student Affairs Larry Moneta as saying no discipline was planned because it wouldn't resolve racial tensions on campus.

This kind of action has no place in higher education. The frat needs to be sent to a diversity class or two, not as punishment but enlightenment. Fine the Frat for punishment, suspend it of any standing for a period.

Shame on them for taking such actions. This is not the best example of what college life has to offer.

[ They ain't ! ] ; in Asia , there are many differing ' ethnic " groups , that practice racism against other asians [ etc. ] and murder ! So , just chill ! I fail to find the racism in a bunch of kids dressing up as Asian character's just believe that we have become a country who has forgotten how to have fun. We cant enjoy our self because we are too afraid of offending someone. What a bunch of fu-king crybabies we have become. So all you freaking bleeding heart Liberals have already labeled ,all of these Kappa Sig kids as a bunch of Raciest ,just because they had a party and dressed up as Asians? Wow how quickly you come to judge others, I guess that makes you feel better about yourselves. I'm SURE Gad I grew up in a different era , at least we were allowed to enjoy ourselves. And have fun.

Nothing to see here, just another Liberal university exposing its true racist side and then projects it on everyone else.

Thank God the Asians are standing up for themselves.

Now if we can just get the other minorities to realize how the Liberals/Progressives keep them oppressed and exploits them for their political gain and then discards them like a used napkin until the next election or created crisis we may actually be able to help them.

The hypocrisy of Liberalism is exposed again.

Gonzales: There is one question, Inspector Callahan: Why do they call you "Dirty Harry"?
De Georgio: Ah that's one thing about our Harry, doesn't play any favorites! Harry hates everybody: Limeys, Micks, Hebes, Fat Dagos, @!$%#s, Honkies, Chinks, you name it.
Gonzales: How does he feel about Mexicans?

Harry Callahan: Especially Spics.

Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical liberal minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end. -- Yeah, political correctness IS the thought police.

The Student Government and and the Asian Students Association planned an on-campus open discussion Wednesday night.

I would be willing to bet it would be declared racist if there was a White Student Association. Maybe if the other ethnic groups would forgo the "insert race here" Student Association type groups, racism would diminish a bit. But as long as there are groups like this that work to separate certain people from others, there will always be racism and resentment.

Asian people know as a whole that the majority of white people are not this ignorant and are not racist! Obama being president is proof of people looking past race. I would imagine that in a big school like Duke people could be very competetive and I would say that they get VERY jealous because Asian people as a whole are usually pretty smart! I think they feel threatened! You might see hundreds of negative comments on there but there are MILLIONS of people in this country that do NOT feel this way and you know that some of the idiots saying stupid things don't really mean it they just don't have brains when they are college age! Or, you could look at this for what it really is, an excuse by a fraternity to throw a party (surprise!!!)

The fact that there are some world leaders worthy of being made fun of by a bunch of fraternity guys is what is really scary.

I have no doubt that the majority of members of the fraternity are not anti-asian racists. No doubt the posters, etc. just got out of control. Undoubtedly what started out as making fun of the N. Korean dictator took on a truly offensive tone when all asians were depicted in a bad light.

Well, at least all of the people at Duke got a lesson in being PC.

Some of them probably had a good time doing it too.

When are you going to stop being threatened by everyone that is different from you and just live your life. Jesus christ, it's like you people go out of your way to find someone to hate, when it's probably yourself you hate the most. It's actually really sad. Every time you do or say something to indicate that you are racist you might as well be wearing a tee shirt that says I am an insecure, ignorant shell of a person, becasue that's what it makes you look like. Besides, racism is so played out, you might as well be running around calling people a Jive Turkey, because that's how stupid you sound.

@ Quaked one.. they call it comedy. It's ok to pick on any one white.

It's also ok to have the "Freedom of Speech", but not if someone else get's offended? Wait, then it's not Freedom, it's regulated....

Well, there is still the Private Property rights... well, unless they don't like it.

SOOOO my big question, where are these people when the universities and others have the cross dressing parties/dances... after all, someone likely is doing it to make fun of the homosexual community.

Then again, Al always wore plaid, must have been picking on the Lesbian Bulls in the crowd....

I love how things have changed over the years. You can say what you want, and all opinions are relative, until you say something that offends someone else.

Do they NOT see the huge door they are opening? Do they not see the can of worms they are letting loose? Just for those wondering what I am talking about, it will eventually become the monster. The only real natural course of events will be to completely censor speech to "approved" dialects.

90% of comedies will be out, 90% of music will be gone, Just about every magazine will be shuttered... Because they all utilize changes in culture to grow, especially the morphing of the language.

I like how easy it is for everyone to criticize prejudice towards Asians, but then in the same sentence blast all white southerners as being racist. It seems pretty hypocritical to call someone a racist while judging an entire group of people based on their skin type and where they are from. Saying all southerners are racist is just as ignorant as anything a racist could say.

Unfortunately Mindyabusiness you're missing vast swaths of history. You're idea that 'White' Europeans are the world's sole oppressors is ridiculous. Your ideology discounts hundreds of other cultures that were oppressors. We can start with enslavement. Enslavement of human beings was practiced by all the ancient civilizations of the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Africa. Native American tribes routinely enslaved their neighbors - The Navajo & Ute to the Paiute and Goshute. Aztecs are famous for their human sacrifices of slaves and war captives, but they definitely were the only ones. Islam as a religion has never had a problem with slavery. Muhammed the prophet had upwards of 30 of his own at any given moment. Islam rapidly expanded outwards from the middle-east to Africa, Europe, Asia, and India. A vast network of slave trading developed. The slave system required that slaves were delivered annually in conformity with treaties of submission by sovereigns who were tributaries of the caliph. This is just the slave trade. We could go on and on about other types of 'oppression' in Islam and the world over and then we could easily jump in to the histories of China, India, Persia, Egypt, Japan, etc etc... All the world has seen its fair share of bad people from every culture.

THE WRATH OF THE AWAKENED SAXON
              by Rudyard Kipling

It was not part of their blood,
It came to them very late,
With long arrears to make good,
When the Saxon began to hate.

              They were not easily moved,
They were icy -- willing to wait
Till every count should be proved,
Ere the Saxon began to hate.

Their voices were even and low.
Their eyes were level and straight.
There was neither sign nor show
When the Saxon began to hate.

It was not preached to the crowd.
It was not taught by the state.
              No man spoke it aloud
When the Saxon began to hate.

              It was not suddently bred.
              It will not swiftly abate.
              Through the chilled years ahead,
When Time shall count from the date
That the Saxon began to hate.

"This destiny does not tire, nor can it be broken, and its mantle of

These things mean different things indifferent places and under different circumstances. I definitely went to Asian-themed parties while in school in both the northeast and on the west coast. Nobody really minded and Asian students were involved. I think the context and the spirit in which it was organized matters a lot, and there may be more going on at Duke that'll get people's backs up.

Look, for very valid historical reasons, it is always considered inappropriate, virtually anywhere in the US, to mock African-Americans racially. It may or not be inappropriate to mock Whites or Asians, depending on how its done, who does it, the context and the location.. one has to use some situational common sense. It is, unfortunately, considered OK by many to mock Latinos or gays, even today. I can't tell you how many times I went to parties targeting Latinos, revolving around a "wetback" meme. It's pretty disgusting.

I look in the mirror every day, as close as my fat gut will allow, and smile at myself, and look at the missing teeth. Then I go to the fridge and take out the leftover squirrel stew from last night and heat it up for breakfast. Then I go outside and spray down the grass near the front porch, because I took a pee off the porch. Next, I cam back into the house to get some paper--pages ripped from the NRA magazine and took it to the one-holer in the back yard.I just look at the pictures, because I can not read past the 3rd grade level. I live alone, because no woman could understand why my big ego does not match the small size of my brain or the tiny size of my penis.

PS Note to Self: I am living the American Dream and spending very little of the cash under my mattress. Also, be sure to go to Wal Mart and get more ammo.

Imagine, in the year of 2013, this Fisher guy must really be hot knowing a President of this country is a man of color!!! Maybe Fisher is receiving email messages from aliens ---the kind coming from a galaxy far far away and they need coordinates to land.

Hmm "Alan Fischer" is that Jewish?

I really want to see Alan go off the deep end. I think there is a drone with your name on it Alan. It is hovering over your "clandestine bunker" better stay tight in there. No sense in allowing "Obummer" to have his drone take you out. Yeah, you are soooo important, aren't you? You massive mountain of a "man." Have you ever said NO to a donut? Gotta think about that sugar intake and your diabetes now. I saw your chart, and you ain't on track to be healthy dude. Your gout and hypertension, is off the charts. Your cholesterol, pffft, you are one run up the stairs from a stroke.

Oh that reminds me, can you get me something upstairs, hurry I need it fast.

Well said, Tad. Unfortunately, Alan Fischer has no idea what you mean - nor do many others. Someone needs to read to Alan a book about Olduvai Gorge. That would almost certainly finish off his miserable life.

I wonder if any of these "Frat" boys speak Mandarin, or Bahassa Indonesian, or Malay, or Japanese, Or Korean--I'm sure they can barely speak proper English and they make fun of others, what dolts and dunces. Like to remind the Boys, that Asians were civilized long before the Europeans even though about moving out of caves. What about an old fashioned costume party, all dolts welcome--just dress as you are.

Hey Skyparrot - you do REALIZE that we are talking about DUKE University right? Duke is tough to get into in the 1st place...even their atheletes are smarter than 75% of the rest of the college students...

let us remind you Skyparrot - DUKE - not NC University at Charlotte..lol....

Wow - now this situation is even worse, based on your stats. What I find the most interesting is that the article states there will be no disciplinary action taken as:

The paper quoted Vice President for Student Affairs Larry Moneta as saying no discipline was planned because it wouldn't resolve racial tensions on campus.

                            Wow again.

I can't believe people get offended so easily. Pretty soon they'll be shouting to ban Halloween... No more nuns, or cowboys, or beer girls... The problem is not THEM the problem is YOU. You are clearly ashamed of the 'stereotype' - we who embrace the 'stereotypes' of our culture live in relative peace...try it. So what if my people wore conical hats, or leather frilled pants, or a black tunic and cross, so what if they wore big sombreros, had pistols, or wore spurs, so what if they had lederhosen and drank lots of beer, or wear camo and have sunburned necks...so what...and you know if that is just a 'stereotype' and they didn't really do any of that...who the fu^% cares!! Life is too short. Grow up. Have fun.

                            Really? So "easily offended"?

Ok, so I could throw a Pollock party or a Kike party

or a Wop or Mick or Spick or go ahead and use any other

                            nasty name you want to.

Why would any sane person think a party to make fun of some other

people is just "Gown up fun"?

So what? you ask...look at that buffoon Alans comments child...hate kills.

What the fu&k difference does it make to me if a bunch of yahoos want to dress up in my cultures clothes, drink, and talk in my accent. I can get angry, pout, and stomp my feet like a 2 year old or get bitter and HATEFUL (remember hate kills) We who embrace the stereotypes of our culture and see them for what they are live in relative peace...try it. Life's much better on our side of the stream.

Lets face it, we as Americans love making fun of people and its just down right disrespectful! And we wonder why our children are bullying others at school? Our culture thrives on being nasty to others, it's such a shame. As "educated" adults, we are supposed to know better. Just goes to show that it doesn't matter if one goes to Duke or NC state, ignorance exists in every socio-economic class.

People have been doing that for centuries, mostly fundie Christian descendants of Puritans. You know, Halloween being a pagan holiday, and all. Funny how the other pagan holidays (Easter, Yule aka Christmas, etc.) don't bother them.

I had a Chinese foreign exchange student once for 6 months. Very well to do, too...he hated China: "They all look the same!" " Too crowded in Beijing!" " All have black hair!" Had NO interest in going back to China, and is still in the U.S. 20 years later, doing well. He told me that Chinese think EVERYBODY other than the Chinese are inferior, and that they will rule the world sooner or later (mostly later- they think long range) . It was a real eye-opener.

Somebody once told me " Words won't bother you unless you think they are true" ...good thing the frat boys didn't call the Asian students "doo-doo heads" - imagine the asian student body : We are all doo-doo heads!" OH, the anguish.....

But, everybody knows you can't parody anybody unless they are white. Then it's open season.

Personally, I'm quite impressed by the PhD credentials in chemistry because it's a very difficult field to begin with, regardless of a person's ethnic background. Kudos to anyone who puts in that time and effort - most of us don't have that drive.

And yes, people do tend to stereotype and it's not just based on ethnicity. Those who are viewed as being a "Nerd" get it the worse, I think. Frankly, I find all "nerds" to be fascinating people who love learning, and then turn that love into something productive that positively impacts our world. My god - did the stupid parade decide to make it's way onto the vine today? What's up with the non-stop comments against Asians? I try to be a lady in my responses, but there's no excuse for some of the things I'm reading here.

Look, the typical Asian stereotype is so 1980's. I know many Asians Americans who are like any other American- they do not have typical Asian accents but adopt the accent from where he or she was raised in the U.S. What I find amazing is that most of them can speak languages from their parents place of origin; how neat is that? When will we come to realize that we are a cosmopolitan society and we need each other? Come on people, stop the hate!

Spo de o de - actually, Matt has a job working as a top level scientist at a facility that requires a top level security clearance.

Really Robin, is this how a top level scientist spends his day working at the Inspector Gadget Laboratory? And exactly how top level is top level that permits access to the Newsvine where he could be considered a security risk. I think maybe Matt is right that he actually does work at the Golden Arches!

@Spo: Actually, I work at McDonald's, thank you very much, and if you could afford it, you'd eat there.

Spo - what's your excuse being on the vine? Is your life boring? Curious about things going on, events? In the mood to stay indoors for a bit, do a little reading and attempt discussions with others? What's your point with that question since you're here? And I am simply I woman who is in love. If you wish to call that a "support group," that's your choice. After my husband's death, I spent 7 1/2 years raising my daughter, trying my best not to feel lonely. And one day this incredible man entered my life and the grief was finally gone. I'm sure you have someone that you love as well, so I'm certain you can understand my defensiveness. It's only natural. I've spent way too much time on this. Regardless, I hope you have a good day.

That they asked people to dress in "Asian costume" is/was not the problem, it's that they intended it to be a racist event and promoted it by ridiculing some common mispronunciations. If you don't see that, you are apparently as doltish as these Duke failures.

Why is it so difficult for so many of you to accept that it is offensive to make fun of a group of people based on stereotypes? When using terms or labels that refer to a specific group to put someone down is what is so offensive. For example, saying "driving while asian" purports that all Asians don't know how to drive. There are probably just as many poor caucasian male drivers but we don't have derogatory terms related to being a white male. I could write a 100 item list of derogatory terms and not one will be related to being a white male. Having a term for a group that can be used as an insult is offensive; plain and simple.

I drive "the speed limit plus 5", which I suppose could be considered slow. I think it might be because Asian people value their lives more than arriving at a destination a few minutes faster. Or perhaps it's because we weigh the risk/benefits of getting $100+ ticket vs. three minutes earlier to the store. I don't know, I guess to some people it's worthwhile.

Stereotypes do come from somewhere. I'm not going to deny it.

The problem lies where a person assumes that because a stereotype exists, that it applies to *every* person of that race or ethnicity. And then some of them are just flat-out wrong. I don't care if people *think* I drive slow, and I smile and wave when passing them while they're being ticketed.

                                  1. Despite the earnest desires of the PC crowd, you have no right to not be offended.

                                  2. Stereotyping is taking the characteristics of a subset of a group and applying them to the entire group. Have you never done that?

The only reason that none pertaining to white males would make your top 100 list is only because you would refuse to include any. This is not the same as there being none. Surely you know some, such as cracker, honkey, peckerwood, gringo, or simply white devil. The problem that you have is that unlike other ethnic and racial groups, we are not offended by such insignificant drivel and tripe.

The frat, its President and VP all are missing the point completely. It is not the party or the racist email you sent out. It is the fact that you would even think of having a party like this that is the problem.

It is not about your actions, it is about your mindset.

And this from a frat that just returned to campus! I think we all know what needs to be done there and it starts with holding the door open and ends with a swift kick to the butt!

Bob, agree 100% that is classy. Money and Brains to get into Duke doesn't equal the ability to not act stupidly.

While I appreciate the response of the chapter president, it rings hollow. That fraternity has a local board of governers that helps out in chapter management. Additionally, the decision to theme a party generally is handled by a small group within the chapter organization. Summary: it took a whole lot of stupid to get that idea forward to become a theme party.

Hope their national gets involved and helps them to learn a bit more tolerance. I also hope that Duke takes another look at their disciplinary decision and comes up with a constructive way to help encourage tolerance and good decision making.

Maybe you should be a little more 'tolerant' of something so trivial. You'd clearly be one of those idiotic school officials suspending kids for playing 'hero' by themselves and blowing 'evil' up with an imaginary hand grenade.

me: You seem to spend a great deal of your time defending discrimination - the most common and obvious expression of an inferior self-image. How about we simply stop identifying each other by race and/or gender - simplifies life for those that need further simplification?

You do realize that calling someone idiotic doesn't in any way elevate your relative status?

Not saying I'm right, but couldn't they just be lampooning a dictator in a belittling manner, albeit racist? Maybe a reaction to that completely ridiculous North Korean propaganda film showing a young man dreaming of nuking NY City? Not saying it's right, exactly, just pointing out a possible reason. Of course, I still think the whole PC thing is a total cliche.

What is this world coming to when white people can't make fun of "less than white" people? When you are white, you have the never ending responsibility of looking down you nose at the other races as human subspecies.

Now does that sound fair? No it doesn't. It's not fair and it is not true. The racism white people endure is much more than any other race in the USA. Maybe white people are receiving pay back for what their ancestors did out of ignorance but I for one am getting tired of the racist abuse I suffer for being white.

Every race in the USA can celebrate their ethnicity openly and proud but if a group of white people celebrate theirs they are called Nazi's and haters. Does that sound fair? How about a "White history month" or a "Miss White America" or even a "White STARZ Channel? The list goes on and on with all the races in the USA that can promote their ethnicity and culture while white people sit quiet in fear of reprisal from the PC races that point the finger at them constantly.

Oh, you poor, poor, oppressed white man. I'm sure those poor Duke fratboys were pushed into this, they didn't want to, but those evil Asian people just wouldn't relent, and made them dress up and use fake accents.

It's definitely the fault of Asian people. I'm sick of it, always having to push my culture in your face... wait, I'm an American. I don't "celebrate" a culture. I don't go to "race rallies" or anything of that nature. Well crap, I guess I'd better join up, otherwise you won't have a straw man to burn anymore.

Come on PHD Matt, you seemed more intelligent in your other posts, the point he's making is that there is exclusionary selectivism by the Politically Correct crowd. Certain groups of people are allowed to discriminate and others are not. I don't know how you can disagree with this. Hell if a white man is discriminated against they call it 'reverse discrimination' - WTF?

Really? He's making a claim of racism against him because he's white. I don't see how a person can disagree with cultural pride, the difference is when it involves exclusion based on a particular race. What form of racism are you, or the original poster subject to?

I agree he's definitely being dramatic. But my point still stands. And perhaps he is experiencing abuse for being white...why is it ok to degrade and denounce his accusations of racism? Is it not possible for a White person to experience racism?

And its interesting that you can brush off BlackTV or Miss Black America with its complete lack of diversity as simply 'cultural pride'. Would a station called WhiteTV simply be 'cultural pride' as well?

me - minority populations are protected against discrimination for a reason. They do not have the numbers to counter actions that would keep them from enjoying the American dream like the rest of us. If whites become the minority, they can have equal protection, too. I find nothing wrong with minority groups expressing pride. I'm of Irish decent and I have no problems expressing pride with that. We all have things to be proud of, but to be honest, I'd feel downright stupid waving a sign of white pride. Why? Move on.

You are complaining because other groups of people have like a month or a few weeks dedicated to their culture? Get over it America is not the nation of the privileged white male. There are all kinds of people here.

And of course no one likes to talk about what happens in a Mancession, unless of course it is affecting a minoritiy. I'd like to think we are all Americans that live in this country and that no one is a minority.

Me - okay, think segregation as just one example. Do you really think blacks loved riding in the back of the bus or being given less opportunities because of the pigment of their skin? In the real world, where I live, there are still people who let a person's race/religion/whatever determine who gets a job or the way they are treated.

Spo - sorry to break the news, but we have minorities in this country. We have people who are treated as less for no other reason than their background - not their actions, not how hard they work, but how they are different.

Lee - that was kind assessment.

No kidding Robin, and some minorities will remain that way as long as they have something to gain politically and financially. Don't you find it ironic that poverty is still tied primarily to one particular group after everything has been done throughout the world to assist them. Maybe there should be a time limit on how long a group can call themselves a minority. After that they are just considered unmotivated and left to their own devices.

Robin...I think you missed the point...I DON"T think discrimination is ok towards ANYONE.

I also think it is NOT ok to 'cripple' an entire demographic by instilling in them a victim mentality and fostering the idea that they are owed something. As a 'victim' myself, I know very well the value of developing a sense of personal self worth and an understanding of ones own capabilities. This NEVER comes from people giving you stuff and pandering to you - making excuses for you and allowing you to act awful to others and take advantage of them because well 'you have been persecuted' or 'victimized' or 'damaged' by society or your upbringing.

Sure the 'help' I received made things seem easier in many ways, but it seriously stifled my progress towards real happiness and developing a sense of self empowerment. If I'd stayed in that mindset of taking what I felt I was owed for my pain and suffering I would never be happy. I'm not saying we shouldn't help people or feel compassion for the bad things that they have had to endure, we certainly should, what I'm saying is that the way we help and show that compassion needs to be constructive in that it helps develop a sense personal capability and worth.

Its very difficult to know when your help has become a hindrance, but I think that ignoring the fact that it has indeed become one can be extremely damaging especially when children are involved. They begin to develop that same I'm a victim attitude- always looking to reinforce ways that they are indeed a victim, so that now you are not only hurting one person you're hurting entire families. This 'you owe me something attitude' fosters deep resentment and anger and further divides society. This is NOT the way to unite a Country and more importantly it is NOT the way to help our children, our sisters, our brothers, our mothers, or our fathers, NOT the way to help anyone be HAPPIER - which is essentially what we all want.

A similar incident happened at William and Mary when I was a grad student in 1981, but in that case it was white males dressing as African American stereotypes. No action was taken then either, but one sure would hope attitudes would have changed in thirty years. These kids actually have no clue that their theme parties are racist, demeaning and insulting. "It's a joke," they claim, but it is a joke at which only they laugh. I've always said the term 'Political Correct' was a phrase invented by a priviledged white man who wanted to continue to make racist and sexist jokes with impunity. When others of us object to their (at best) insensitivity, they cry, "Don't be so politically correct!" It is not about being politically correct but about acting correctly. You certainly have the right to insult me and my culture but not with impunity. Expect a backlash.

Haha, fools! I'm glad I can make just about every racist joke in the book (no Eskimo in my blood line). There's a certain freedom in having a crazy mixed heritage. I don't get offended at race jokes, and you can't stop me from making them. Hey I tell a black joke? It's about me. When I tell an asian joke, it's about me. When I tell a white joke, it's about me. You can say, "but what about other people who get their feelings hurt?" I say, "Good comedy has grains of truth and the best comedy stings like crazy" As a black Chemist/ Electrical Engineer, the lazy stupid black jokes don't bother me or my family because we work and study hard. An Asian who's small and obsequious? doesn't bother me, because I'm ex military, weigh 200lbs and I like to fight. White guy who's anal retentive and no rhythm? Well as an engineer I guess I am a little stiff, but I can cut the rug!! Relax, the frat boys are idiots, and they certainly don't have a single drop of sensitivity in their bodies, but Freedom of speech is defended, even for the town jesters. The best thing you can do is laugh them to out the door. Don't take yourselves too seriously, relax. Idiots abound everywhere, and I and you are no different. If you think you are different, then you are also a fool.

I happen to be of mixed racial heritage myself...but I do take acception with mean-spirited racist humor, no matter the source. And ignoring ignorance/hatred is tantamount to promotion of it. It is like a weed that grows unabated in the beautiful garden of America. It has been particially stemmed by law and if brought to the light of day where ever and when ever it occurs, it will die a natural death with new generations. But it can not be watered with more hatred nor can its proliferation be stopped by turning a blind eye. I like the jokes. I like good comedy. But comedy based in hatred is not funny.

A lot of frat boys enjoy making trouble as this is training for when they get to be CEO's. They stir up trouble in college, when it "doesn't count, since they are just high spirited college boys" and so get to deal with some high powered administrators in the schools and so learn what it is like to kick the hornest's nest.

Once they learn how to BS their way through this: "We're so sorry, please forgive us, we'll never do it again", etc, etc. Now think about the billionaire bankers and what they are saying about driving the US into a giant recession: "WE're so sorry, please forgive us, we'll never do this again", etc, etc.

If you think I'm joking, think again. I always wondered why business majors were so often frat boys. Now I understand that all their "warfare" with other frats, plus within the frats was all practice for office politics once they started their administrative careers. Where I work, most of the administrators are not very bright, but they do know how to manage and hoard power, so that the worker bees have none and so have to kiss the butts of the not-so-bright administrators to get anything done. Our company at the manager level if just like some small fraturnity: if you're not in it, you're nothing! While they fight with each other, if any of the worker bees try to grab some power, the administrators join together in a show of force to put it down.

So, if you think I'm kidding about frat boys and why they raise so much hell and create so much trouble, then do your own research and see how many become administrators and how many actually do something that produces anything directly, like doctors, nurses, machinists, etc. Very few. Frat boys love to learn how to manipulate people since in business that skill that pays big bucks. And if they fail in business, why, they can use their slimy tactics and become...drum roll...politicians!! LOL

Obviously I'm not sterotyping all frat boys like this. There is just an inordinate number of them that do this and end up in administrative jobs.

Yes there are a lot of corporations that have upper echelons just like that. More manupulative skills than brains.

Nice out you gave yourselves at the end..."I'm not sterotyping all frat boys like this." -- when your entire long winded post was, drum roll dah da da da, a stereotype...brilliant.

So its OK for you to stereotype...but not them?

Amazing that kids from the generation raised with the most diversity feel this is fun or appropriate.

The apology could have been written by someone on Obama's staff. It's totally devoid of belief or credibility. Just spin.

I am very glad that my children attended a real university and not some cesspool of ignorance, racism, and general waste of their parent's money. Duke is definitely off our list.

I would never send a child to Duke on the basis that I like the Terps.

I don't think you can claim an entire school is a cesspool of racism, unless they're called "Klan University" or "White Power Institute of Technology." Then you have every right to do so... but for the most part... I'm pretty sure colleges encourage diversity, acceptance, and all the fine, considerate things we're all supposed to do, but fail miserably on from time to time.

Niki, I was afraid you'd quit, for a minute there. The harsh berating from Lars would be enough to get any job-holding taxpayer down. I was on the ten year plan, myself. OH, and I paid for it all by my ownsome. Not a dime of Obamanation handouts....amazing, ain't it.
