I agree that the first lady is only going because it was someone who performed at the inauguration and the story has made national news. People die in Chicago everyday from gang violence but if the president and first lady didn't do something, some kind of appearance or statement of support for the family of the victim that died shortly after performing at such a high profile event to honor them it wouldn't look good. I'm sure they'll say they wish they could attend every funeral but that's an empty gesture really. The fact is that the country expects them to do something in this case and as a country we don't put so much attention towards the other person(s) who died that day in that same area or any other place in the country from similar circumstances. Do I believe the first lady or president really cares that much about this specific individual, they simply don't know her. They care about making public appearances where they are expected to and if it gives them a chance to further something they believe in then they will take that opportunity.

While I don't agree with the majority of the policies and beliefs that the president or his wife have expressed, they are doing exactly what is expected of them and I wouldn't fault them for this act more than I would fault another presidential couple for doing the same. If it turns into some big publicity stunt to further an agenda and detracts from the families time to mourn the loss of their loved one then I will condemn the heck out of such action but simply attendance is entirely expected given the circumstances.

There is a very good chance that if the shooter was a gang member that he obtained the gun without a background check. There is also a very high probability that some "law abiding citizen" bought the gun legally and sold it to the "thug." Due to the extremely weak gun laws promoted by NRA lobbying efforts, threats to politicians and participation in the political process, it is very, very easy for a gang member to buy a gun.

Straw sales are illegal, but the ATF has been neutered, largely due to pressure from the NRA. It is commonplace for people in places like Arizona to buy a dozen assault-type weapons at a time and never have to account for those weapons. The following week they buy another dozen ...... the beat goes on. Straw sales are happening and the ATF is underfunded. State laws are allowed to take precedence over federal law. The confirmation of the head of the ATF has been blocked by NRA-backed Congressional Republicans for the pas 7 years. Laws do not work if enforcement of those laws is blocked.

Did the parents of the victims at Sandy Hook start a Petition to have President Obama attend the funerals? Did they personally invite him to come? Did they make a public announcement that they wanted him to attend the funerals? The point I'm making is that this family DID, and for ANY President to not respond would be seen as insensitive. The President and the First Lady are both Chicagoans, so to ignore a request would have been very bad publicity. Why can't we be concerned over 4 dead American's defending our freedoms as well as a young girl just starting life. I never thought we had to choose one over the other. They all died in a horrible way and deserve to be honored.

I agree with you, I find it a great gesture that Michelle is going to the funeral, after the child did perform at the president inauguration, I just wish that the president and his wife were able to attend the funerals of all slain children, especially the babies. Tough choices have to be made. Maybe the president's wife is attending the funeral because as a mother she understands that a child is truly a special gift. People are using so much hatred without understanding the impact that it is having on america. If they only would take the time to notice, then maybe world would be a better place. I am a single white mom of 8 3 babies died, and my 8 year old is being tested for cancer because a mass was located in the mediastinum near the apex of the heart. I also had to earn my degree , last year I graduated with a BS in Biological Science now I am working on my masters online. Even though the cards I had been dealt have been horrible, I have had to learn how to overcome diversity. Instead of focusing on the bad, why can't people see this as the first lady attending as a mother and not as a diplomat. If a Navy SEAL had been killed the same week Obama bragged about "getting bin Laden" he might have found the time to attend their funeral, along with his official photographer and several hundred of his closest media friends.
