National fraternity suspends Duke chapter behind anti-Asian 'racist rager' party

The Kappa Sigma fraternity at Duke University has stirred up controversy with a party called "Asia Prime," sparking protests by outraged students. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports from Durham, N.C.

Updated at 6:33 p.m. ET: The Duke University fraternity that threw a "racist rager" party last week featuring racial stereotypes of Asians has been suspended by its national headquarters.

The national office of Kappa Sigma said in a statement Wednesday that it was investigating last Friday's party for possible conduct unbecoming a chapter. It told its chapter in Durham, N.C., to shut down all activities pending completion of the investigation and a decision on punishment.

In a message to Kappa Sigma members nationwide, Christian Nascimento, the fraternity's "worthy grand master," wrote Thursday:

The Kappa Sigma Fraternity is a diverse group of men, with members from all walks of life. We celebrate this diversity, as it is one of the things that makes our Order so strong. The actions taken in association with the event in question are inconsistent with our values. I personally condemn that type of behavior.

An estimated 250 to 300 people gathered on campus Wednesday to protest the party, which was promoted through fliers and email messages that included stereotyped Asian spellings like "herro" and "peopre" and cartoonish images of the late North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il. It was promoted on Twitter with the hashtag #RacistRager.

Katherine Zhang, a senior and co-president of Duke's Asian American Alliance, read a statement at the rally declaring, "When you wrote, 'Herro Duke,' you were not just mocking an accent. You were mocking an immigrant's struggle to make it in this nation."

The fraternity declined NBC News' request for comment, but at a campus forum Wednesday night, its president, Luke Keohane, said, "Our actions were inexcusable," according to a report in the campus paper, The Chronicle.

The party threw the Duke University campus into turmoil. Jonathan Carlson of NBC station WNCN reports.

"We're not here because we want to defend ourselves," he said. "We're here because we want to learn."

It's not the first time the Duke chapter has been in trouble. It returned to campus only last year after having been dissolved in 2002 amid a misconduct investigation.

While the national fraternity has already suspended the Duke chapter, the university itself is holding off on any action.

"At the moment, we're not aware of any overt violations," Larry Moneta, Duke's vice president for student affairs, told NBC News. "Acting boorish and foolish is not in and of itself a violation."

As an ex-Kappa Sigma member (not from Duke) my first thought when I read this article was that I am glad I am an "ex".

You should still be ashamed of Duke though, yesterday the administrators showed their true colors by saying they wouldn't punish any students. But after the story gained momentum in the media, they all of a sudden feel differently.

NC universities will be technical schools if the current NC RepubliCon legislature has anything to do with it! They are trying to ditch a well-rounded 4-year education for job placement via technical training. This is in the state universities rather than community colleges that they are trying this. NC is now trying to take over Mississippi's #50 placement.

I think these crude insults actually are a reflection of fear.

These pampered, unproductive frat boys must instinctively understand that their privileged world is coming to an end and it is the Asians who will take over, and quite soon. As they have no other use, each Kappa Sig will be hitched between the poles of a rickshaw to spend his life serving the very people whose speech he presumes to mock today.

Asians are an easy race to pick on. Some whites have a need to pick on a race. These same people cannot say ni**er or sp*ck without the fear of getting their butts kicked. So they found a race they think are physically inept. Why do they not have a racist muslim, racist african or racist hispanic party? Those guys above can represent the republican party all day. The republican party is collapsing with these attitudes even if it is a Democrat pretending to be republican.... actually our race is collapsing on it own stupidity

And there is something wrong with making fun of the dictator of North Korea, who has at least 50,000 people locked up and living in a concentration camp and who threatens America with nuclear weapons?

Unbelievable, apparently the politically correct inmates of the asylum have taken over and are now running Duke University. At least, it will forewarn anyone with commonsense where not to go to school.

It was a party; not a world changing event. In case no one has noticed, there are actually real causes worth getting worked up about - like the ineptitude of our government from top to bottom to solve real problems like the economy - that need our attention, not BS filler like this.

The Asian woman going to Duke who said that the fraternity was ..."mocking the struggles of immigrants.' or words to that effect, must have grown up in a very soft, intellectually and politically correct environment - divorced entirely from the struggle that real immigrants coming to America face. Reminds me of children you see mouthing the political views of their parents with neither thought nor true understanding of the slightest degree of the underpinnings of their statements nor actual comprehension, but doing it so mommy and daddy will be proud of them.

I have six young friends – ages 22 through 30 - all of whom are real immigrants. Young men - 3 of whom are seeking and ultimately will be granted God willing political asylum from the God forsaken African nations they have escaped from; and 3 who came here after winning the Green card lottery in their home country.

They view America as it truly is; the land of opportunity and freedom it always has been for immigrants and people the world over seeking both freedom and economic opportunity and the chance to live their lives as they see fit - not as some despot or a regrettably backward country that operates on a less than enlightened and modern day paradigm dictates and/or tacitly insists they must.

Unfortunately, most of the rhetoric being bandied around now – just like this inane comment by the young woman – is being mouthed by people who think, rather than know, what they are talking about.

But then, when you must consider the ivory towered, university environment form which this broo ha ha has originated, it should not be that surprising.

Throughout its history America has been tough, agreed, on immigrants, but no more and probably actually less in many respects than other countries of the same time periods in question that do not even today offer the same opportunities to rise within their social and economic structures as does America, where you truly can become whatever you set your mind to becoming – even President. (If the ONLY thing, and it is in my opinion one the few actually, good thing that has come out of Obama being elected proved is that there are no longer any excuses that hold water for those who would hide behind the, “Well I can’t ahead because I’m black, or Asian or whatever ….”)

How we deal with adversity is what defines us and to the degree that we allow our minds to take seriously the type of fluff B.S. Duke is playing to with its ultra-sensitive, politically correct approach we will be less able to deal with the real world and walk into an Alice in Wonderland world of un-reality.

But then, all you need to do is reflect back to how Duke, the press and the prosecutor (who was later disbarred I think for gross negligence) handled the accusation by the lying, black woman (whose story changed more often than the wind's direction) to recall how the University condemned and essentially had convicted he players. After all, it is a given that young, white men would automatically harbor the desire to rape a pure as the driven snow black woman isn't it? Of course, it did play into perfect the desire of Duke and those who supported the "lynch ém first" find out the truth later attitude.

We live in a day and age where you have newspapers – where bias is rampant – like the New York Times and Washington Pravda – where the editorial slant invariably is looking for with fervent desire to side with the fools of the world who want a “ cause célèbre” to use to point out how racist America is and still support and need to posit excuses why debilitating programs like like Affirmative Action (aka – Allow those who aren’t qualified and who don’t have the smarts to get their on their own to be allowed to assume jobs they aren’t as well qualified to assume) are needed.

In the end the truth will win out, and these Alice in Wonderland perceptions will be seen for what they are – empty headed, albeit probably well intentioned, but hair brained and lacking in a foundation of reality.

People need to take a step back, the punishment was apt.

Those of you here that are so quick to ax Duke University without knowing all the facts are most unwise. Remember when the Duke soccer team was condemned without a trial when a woman cried she was raped by soccer team members? The Durham DA without facts tried and sentenced those Duke students. Turned out the woman had lied and the DA was terminated. The woman was later convicted of a serious crime and went to prison. Those Duke students were dragged through the mud because of lies. Further, some of you are very quick to call southerners racist. I saw more racism up north than I have ever seen down south. Further a majority of Duke students are not southern. Most of you believe everything the liberal media airs. I have always found it rather startling that racism is always thought of as white against black. Racism is found throughout the world and perhaps there is a higher percentage of black against white racism that the reverse. I would venture to state that none, not one of you would turn down a Duke University degree. I wouldn't and I have a degree from UNC. Duke University is an outstanding university and will withstand all that you want to throw its way.

Duke University is a fantastic private school whose tuition rates are probably $100K-$120K per year by now. I doubt most of you on THIS board could even get into Duke if you applied!! Duke is not a North Carolina school per se... it is a private school and very few North Carolinians could afford to go there. In fact, the Asian population is very prominent at Duke as they are full-paying, no scholarship, no student-loan students if they are truly foreign students and not Americans. They must compete to get into this university and they didn't get there without the grades and exceptional academic background. They are OBVIOUSLY smarter than the frat boys that threw this bigoted party!

I am completely disgusted with the university's response to this situation. I am glad to see the national fraternity took it more seriously than the school did. Until the people stand up to racism and bigotry and let it be known that it will not be tolerated, this country will continue to implode from within as it seems to be doing now. And you wonder why this country's moral fiber seems to be deteriorating at a rapid pace. Nobody seems to have any respect for anyone anymore... not even themselves.

Big deal they(Asians) pay their own way with foreign money and whether or not anyone on this board can afford it or not really shows what a Hypocrite you are. Your special if you can pay your own way and of course all you others are using student loans and have to go to inferior colleges, so in effect you're not as smart. Yet you call them bigots, huh Skippy.

          #3.13 - Fri Feb 8, 2013 12:15 AM EST

No, SKIPPY, you're the not-so-smart bigot. There are lots of private colleges and universities that MOST of us cannot afford, myself included. But Duke enjoys a wonderful academic reputation and if you don't have the money or don't have the ability to get the money, you simply do not get in there. The tuition costs the same to the Asians that it costs the Americans to go to school there. My point was these kids are paying equally to go there. My other point was most of the idiots on this board could not POSSIBLY get into Duke... I can tell that from their writings and ignorant rants!

Duke does enjoy a wonderful reputation as a diverse university who accepts a diverse population of students... they go out of their way to HAVE a diverse student body because it adds to the rich cultural environment Duke provides. And for them to allow a fraternity to have a party that denigrades a particular population of foreign students is just WRONG! Duke sends representatives to international schools all over the globe to recruit students with the best academic backgrounds to come to their "diverse" university. They should darned well stand up for these kids they have in fact "recruited" when an on-campus fraternity decides to hold an obviously bigoted party that makes fun of a large group of the students attending that very university.

And to lump all North Carolinians as ignorant rednecks is just as bigoted as this party was. I have lived in other parts of the U.S. and the world and ignorance is bliss just about everywhere you go! If you call what these kids did just "having fun" and the Asians they insulted "pompous jerks", then I think you are the bigot Skippy!

You realize that they are helping your economy right??

I am asian and i hope all the rich asians stop going over there and stop supporting your crappy economy. then you all can cry more about how bad your economy is. wow talk about being ungrateful!!!

They are not coming to America for the sole reason of "helping the economy out". They are coming for personal gain of the education system, which is by far superior here than in their own countries. That is quite the ignorant comment. If you would like to see ungrateful you should see the abundance of asian students who refuse to assimilate into the university as normal students and instead show a complete disrespect for the institution by lying, cheating and failing to come to class. I couldn't figure out if most of the international students were there to study or if they were just there for a vacation.

You know not for nothing, I came to US when I was 4. I went to college here, I've had a job since 15. I've paid my taxes, I'm a citizen and claim myself to be American. Not some hyphenated crap that I see used everywhere. Now are there people that of Asian background that come here, take advantage of the system and not assimilate into society? Sure of course. But so does every minority. To say that only Asians cheat is ridiculous statement. Secondly to say that all asians in america are immigrants who don't hold loyalty to the country is also ridiculous. People like you ridicule the "home country aka China" and say we come here just to take advantage. I haven't, and just about all of my friends haven't. We are citizens, pay our taxes, make a lot of money, are heavily educated and successful. We vote, keep to ourselves, assimilated into the society especially rules of common courtesy. We hold high paying jobs, hold degrees beyond bachelors, and are the most successful and wealthiest minority group in this country. We also give to charity, we don't use violence as a means to get any messages across and generally love this country as much or more than our "home country aka the evil communist regime of china".

Remember that for every "one" of THOSE asians you see, there are two more who are just Americans, that happened to have an ethnic background as Chinese.

Setting aside the racism thing, how about the flagrant debauchery? So.. parents are paying $56,000 a year so that their daughters can prance around nekkid, obviously stoned.. on facebook, for all the world to see?

Actually, I think North Carolina has decent schools and is one of the more progressive states in these things. It's kind of a breath of fresh air in the South, if I recall correctly. I've always enjoyed visiting the Raleigh-Durham/RTP area and Charlotte too.. can't say the same of South Carolina..

I wouldn't blame any of this on NC. Duke seems to have some issues.. but it's students really do come from all over the region and the US. I don't think it necessarily reflects on the either NC or its part of the state. UNC, nearby, is a very progressive school in many respects. There are also some very good and ideologically balanced liberal arts colleges from that area. Isn't Davidson College around there somewhere?

As the grandmother of two little boys whose mother is an American of Philippino heritage, I just could not believe what I was reading. I lived through this type of stuff as a child - green eyed, redheaded but with an Italian last name. I saw relatives and friends who were stereotypical looking Italians, Spaniards and Greeks get called all sorts of nasty terms and looked down on. Must be jealous.

And they should be punished, as what they did reflects negatively on the university that granted them a charter. But violation of university rules, while it can be serious, hardly rises to the level of criminality. Suspend the charter for a while, close the house down for now, and that's enough. Frat boys acting out of drunken immaturity -- who knew? What a shock.

Jesse Helms? He tried to be as cantankerous as possible in his policy work, but reportedly he was a nice guy in real life. I had to meet with him for lobbying stuff for my company a few times in DC.. and met with him in the presence of African-American colleagues. He was always very courteous.. not the slightest bit of condescension. He was always a gentleman in person, however neanderthal some of his policy views were. He also believed firmly in the democratic process... more so than many on either side of the aisle. I'm a Dem, but while he lived, I was actually kind of a fan of his.

People nowadays throw the word racist around like a bag of chips. The nationwide chapter said they celebrate diversity. Fine. This week a lot was made of NJ Gov Chris Christie's weight. If the fraternity decided to have a "fat party" with among other things, making fun of Christie, would such a big deal be made? I mean it is offensive to overweight people isn't it? Or would it be just laughed off as some having a good time. Who makes the rules on whats racist or offensive. Are whites ever the victim of racism?

There are only rules for the white population against other races. Other races cane say or do anything against the whites and its their right. HHHHMMMMMMMMMMM Bet you're not white are you? Whites have a sense of humor and don't care if some frat makes fun of us. You ever watch TV shows that make fun of the white race? Bet your laughing your A$$ of and never think "wow this program is racist" Thats because the white population actually finds humor in the things we do unlike most of the other races. So take your pompous attitude and and put it where the sun doesn't shine.

The most interesting thing about the comments here is that, although you see the words "racist" and "bigot" sprinkled here and there, they are not gushing and over flowing in the posts that you see when another minority group gets "offended". (also there is usually 10X the number of comments). Just a fairly civil back and forth here as opposed to a "you racist, bigoted, southern, white trash, inbred, KKK loving, trailer park crackers". Interesting.

If they planned a trailer park white trash redneck theme maybe no one would complain.

Ok, right, because there are none of those people attending that school.

Memo to frats: plan parties that mock those who are not present in your politically correct school culture. Extraterrestrial aliens, maybe.

This whole deal is a non-issue.

And actually you have to admit, Kim Jong Un and his forebears are pretty damn funny characters.

These pathetic goobers at Duke were acting out their feelings of Asians as the yellow menace. If you don't see that, you're as farking dumbas they are. Maybe not full whitetrash stupid, but pretty damn close.

They should be barred from ever voting for a liberal Democrat. If they insist on voting for Hillary in 2016, they could always argue, "What difference, at this point, does it make?"

Racism is wrong. Its no different than bullying, also at epidemic levels. Kids should be getting sensitivity training all through school.

Parents teaching their kids racist or bullying behavior, should lose their children. Its child abuse to teach hate.

This whole situation is a bunch of BULLSH!T blown out of shape by the media(Today Show). There are different clubs all over colleges that supposedly allow all races but if you're not of their race you might as well go into an empty room alone. No one will even acknowledge you or even speak to you, and believe it or not the rudest students on campus are the Asian population. I think this country is too PC and should stop whining and sniveling about everything being racist.

I belong to one of the minorities and really don't care if some person pokes fun of my race because its not really important nor is it worthy of the media to report on it just to make a name for themselves. I should have know it was reported by the Today Show, they are famous for putting garbage on their crappy program.

Racism isn't innate. It is TAUGHT.

My kids grow up with the understanding that there are PLENTY of reasons to dislike certain people. the color of their skin... their ethnicity... their religious background are NOT among them.

                                                Hate someone who's abusive.
                                                Hate someone who's a bully.
                                                hate someone who is corrupt.
Hate someone who is themselves, a racist.
Hate someone who uses & manipulates people.
Hate someone who is a thief. Or just...

Hate someone who is an a-hole.

All of these dispicable traits can be found in humand beings of EVERY race, color and social background. I know, personally, individuals that have EVERY one those characteristics.

Being afraid of people that look different is, to some extent, a biological survival mechanism. Racism is definitely mostly learned, though.
