Police shoot man brandishing knife at Florida Atlantic University

NBC News

Police on the roof of a research building at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla., on Friday, Feb. 8.

Updated at 12:56 p.m. ET: Police shot and wounded a man Friday morning on the roof of a building at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla.

The victim, described as in his 20s, was in serious condition at Delray Medical Center, Boca Raton Police Chief Dan Alexander told reporters Friday afternoon. He said the man produced a knife when officers showed up to investigate a report that a homeless person was on the roof, "and shots were fired."

The shooting occurred on the roof of a building in Research Park, an enclave on the north end of the university's property. It isn't part of the main university grounds, and there was never a threat to students, faculty or staff, police told NBC News.

The campus wasn't evacuated or placed on lockdown, but people who work in the building where the shooting took place told NBC station WPTV of West Palm Beach that they weren't being allowed back in.

Michelle Acevedo and M. Alex Johnson of NBC News contributed to this report.

Clearly no one should believe this "conspiracy". No shooting occurred.

correct. It didn't happen at the university. As the HEADLINE reads. the P.D. didn't even feel the need to lock down the school.... But you read that right?

I wish the media would just stop reporting on shootings, stabbings, etc at schools. It just brings out the crazies who want their 15 minutes of fame...

Maybe the media could just give us a monthly tally of all the people killed with guns in the country, or even a state-by-state total. Their are too many copy-cat shooters.

Yep those damn gun Toting Police using Guns against a person with a knife because they couldn't use pepper spray, a Taiser, or anything else, because there are no non-lethal devices, to subdue a man with a knife.

Tell us again how Law Enforcement should be the only ones with guns because there the only ones responsible enough to have them...

Have you ever used pepper spray, David Noah? I did, against a man who pursued me and threw a full can of soda at my head at a bus stop. I sprayed him right in the face twice, and it still did not stop him. It will not stop those who are sufficiently agitated or mentally ill. If he had had a knife, I would have been dead; he had cornered me in the bus shelter at one point. I had to run against traffic into a video store (this was the 1990s) before he let up.

When I worked at city hall in my area I had to take trainings on mail bombs and how to defend ourselves from agitated complainers. Someone with a knife can cross 21 feet of distance before a cop can even draw his or her gun.

What proof do you have that pepper spray or a taiser was tried first and failed?

Because of your experience two decades ago, Police should immediately move straight to using a gun against a person and not bother to try non lethal methods first?

They must have been working in L.A. at some point. Shoot a homeless guy with a knife. Police shoot at a truck and hit two Asian ladies while delivering newspapers, while hunting for that Liberal cop killer. Police have too much power. I think they should ban their guns. Police can shoot anyone at any time,no problem. I have a so-called assault rifle that they want to ban. I have never shot anyone. Ban POLICE!!!!!

"At least one shot at Florida Atlantic University." The teaser headline made it sound like another mass shooting possible at a school...no, just police shooting a knife wielding nut off...or on, his meds. Way to push that agenda, MSNBC. Darn-it. I fell for the headline. There was no "shooting that matched with the headline," wasn't on campus proper grounds. How about this for a headline NBC? "Police shoot homeless man wielding a knife on roof top."

Okay, time to turn the page

      BREAKING NEWS !!!

In Tampa, Florida a teen was shot down and killed by a drone for having an ASSAULT BB GUN ! Barack Obama didn't want to wait for his authority to kill American citizens who were aiding AL QAEDA ! The teen was heard to have shouted ..."Ali Allah Aqhbar" before rapid fire pelting three pit bulls that were taking "major dumps" in his front yard !

Obama has promised a full investigation by no later than December, 2016 !The State Dept, however, is saying the "doggie dumps" were part of "spontaneous demonstrations" about a Lassie film they did not like.

Homeless VS Cop. Knife VS Gun. Why could they not taser him and cuff him? I guess it is easier for them to just shoot the guy. Seems to be the common philosophy of Law Enforcement now days. The guy was homeless and probably mentally Ill.

I'm talking about insurance. Let's say your name is Nancy Lanza. And you just love guns. You bring guns into your home. But your home is also occupied by a very dangerous person. The dangerous person grabs your guns, kills you, kills dozens of others, causes a national tragedy. Oops, that has to cost something.

Nancy Lanza needs to buy gun insurance before it is too late.

(hold on, message coming in ...)

Person in custody after shooting at Florida Atlantic University

Now, here's something a little more truthful indicating that the incident DID NOT occur at a school.

Boca Raton Police told NBC News that the shooting occurred in a business park on the north end of the university's property that isn't part of the main university grounds,

They will post anything they can and word it any way they can to sell "clicks". Makes little difference if it is slanted so far that it is hard to understand, that is just how they do business. Factual news with out bias is very hard to get, seems they all have a "political agenda" and that is all they care about. The name NEWS SOURCE is a joke.

@XD, I'm really not against gun ownership. Actually, I recently got my permit and am planning to purchase a Glock. I won't get into a heated debate about this because it's a matter of opinion, but I do believe that, human nature being what it is, people should not be packing heat in the streets. The effectiveness of screening is only as good as the clinician who conducts the evaluation and who can easily be deceived by a brilliant psychopath. We often hear about people who commit terrible crimes and those they knew telling reporters that they would have never thought them capable of such an act. I work in the field of Forensic Psychiatry/Psychology and have seen this firsthand all too often.

Troy: LMAO. I can only assume (no stats available) that the number of gun deaths resulting from, for example, road rage in states with the most liberal laws far exceeds the number of deaths resulting from people lacking expertise in the art of negotiation with a deranged gun-toting individual.

@jks1: Fortunately I never had to talk my way out of such a situation and hopefully will never need to do so. I have a hunting and target permit. The gun will remain in my house. I plan to use it only for target practice (I don't hunt). I will, however, keep you apprised.

                  HEADLINE......as of 11:44

Person in custody after shooting at Florida Atlantic University, police say

Evidently Not .....as "The NBC News Staff "goes on to say.......

Boca Raton Police told NBC News that the shooting occurred in a business park on the north end of the university's property that isn't part of the main university grounds, and that there was no threat to public safety.

SO basically you admit to lying and sensationalising the headline to support your own agenda ....RIGHT...???

Wanna bet the headline changes ? ...in 5..4...3..

It's a business park on the property of Florida Atlantic University, but with little to no connection to the university, faculty, students. It's about a half-mile distance between these buildings and the northernmost student parking lots. I went to that school. So, it is a factually correct headline, but let's not marginalize a shooting whether it occurs in a school, a battlefield, or anywhere in between. But hey, if you really want to get enraged over the media, rather than attempting to do anything about it, then you've already lost.

Would attempting to do something about it mean taking the guns away from the police who shot someone who was only armed with a knife?

The headline has been changed to state "Police shoot man", but before that it said exactly what Scooter posted and made it sound like another lunatic shot someone at a school. That is the sensationalistic issue they are talking about, as if you read most of the early comments they are immediately calling for the ban of guns again.

Speaking to the facts, the research park is indeed part of the University. It is nearby, just not in the center of the main campus. However, it is still part of the university and has researchers from the university working there.

Yet posed no threat to students, teachers or anyone else in the area. Notice the 'article' says no shut down of classes, etc.

The police could have used s stun gun instead of shooting this young man.

apparently it was a semi-automatic knife that shoots out 75 little knives per minute or something. Ban knives and blame the NCA (National Cutlery Association).

Don't you just love the Journalistic integrity?

The link on the main page indicates at least one person shot, suggesting that more than one person was shot, another mass shooting.

At least one shot at Florida Atlantic University

But when you read the article it clearly indicates that ONLY one person was shot. And now that the story is updated it turns out it was the Police that shot a homeless person with a knife on the roof.

Police shot and wounded a man Friday morning on the roof of a building at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla.

The victim, described as in his 20s, was in serious condition at Delray Medical Center, Boca Raton Police Chief Dan Alexander told reporters Friday afternoon. He said the man produced a knife when officers showed up to investigate a report that a homeless person was on the roof, "and shots were fired."

Tell us again how we can trust the Police to be the only ones with guns...

They couldn't have pepper sprayed him, used a taiser, or the many other non-lethal devices law enforcement has at their disposal?

Maybe they thought the ex-LAPD officer made his way to Florida.

I know a lot of LEO's and even they are concerned about some of the people in uniform today. But that's what happens when the standards get lowered.

Why is it that in videos of police dealing with drunks and mentally ill, those from foreign countries often show the police tackling the subject, subduing him, and removing him from dangerous locations such as rooftops, but in the US the police seem to go to use of their guns first. I suppose the possibility of getting their uniforms dirty is considered life-threatening here.

The Brits maybe doing that. Back in 2005 there were a bunch of Dr.s calling for a ban on kitchen knives. Why? Because so many people were being stabbed and killed by knives. And to quote them.

'There was no reason for long pointed knives to be publicly available at all.'

                              http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/4581871.stm

Kinda sounds familiar doesn't it? Just replace 'long pointed knives' with 'Assault Weapons'.

The Problem with NBC and Main Stream Media is they are so Desperate to push Obama's and the Lefts agenda that they will post any story about a shooting as fast as they can without knowing any facts.

Now that the facts are out, and it turns out that it was the police that shot a man with a knife, do you think maybe they are a little embarrased?

"There was never a threat to students, faculty or staff, police told NBC News."... So a police officer confronted the man on the roof. He brandished a knife... Then rather than holding back and seeking a peaceful solution the officer(s) decided to shoot. I'm hoping we are missing some facts; otherwise, we need to train our police officers better.

Are you people serious? If a policeman yells at somebody to put the gun down a dozen times and the guy won't put the gun down, why should the police risk their lives and run up to the crazy person and physically disarm him? Some of these people are on drugs that make them crazy or super strong. If your son was a police officer, would you want him to wrestle with a man with a knife once or twice a week? We definitely need more mental heal treatment in this country, but we don't need people who know nothing about it to constantly be telling the police how to do their jobs. If you pick up a weapon, you had better be prepared to face the consequences. This article is stupid to claim this happened on a college campus, but these incidents happen on a daily basis. If you were the man with the gun, then it would be for you to decide. When someone with a gun tells you to put your knife down, do it. Being deaf is an excuse, but there's always some armchair expert willing to explain how it should have been handled. Why don't you keep your expert opinions to your own field. Most of you would have been behind the cop yelling "shoot, shoot."

Sandy.... there are MANY alternatives to shooting a person with a knife. Pepper spray and/or tasers come to immediately to mind.

However, as I wasn't there, I can't comment on the exact circumstances surrounding this particular incident.

I CAN fault MSNBC for sensationalizing it. I will give them a little credit for at least changing the original "headline" to what is displayed now. When FIRST posted it simply read "Person in custody after shooting at Florida Atlantic University"

So, the gun toting police shoot a man off a ROOF! Really! A knife is dangerous long distance? Even if you have a knife and throw it at an officer, it would bounce off of his vest. I thought that you had to be really close to injure someone with a knife. I don't like the idea of anyone getting shot, but having been an object of police brutality myself, I really don't want them to be the only ones with guns.

A police officer runs into someone he doesn't know brandishing a knife... Most officers don't even wear vests. Usually just a small plate to protect vital organ. That "victim" pulled out a potentially lethal killing device from yes a distance as far as anyone could know and close up (people have been killed by sharp poking devices a lot longer than guns), the officer responded in a way to protect other people in the area and his/her own life, and last checked, the officer intentionally didn't end that homeless person's life. I wouldn't run up and try to pepperspray a person with a knife, i wouldnt try to tackle someone with a knife, and who knows what would have happened with that knife if the victim was tazed.

This is more media fake news and lies. Media, why be so obvious about glorifying school shootings that you do fake news on a fake story?. How many of the nuts get their incentive from media hype??? Responsible media? That will never happen. Now media, tell us again how wonderful the world will be if you take all guns away from responsible people....
