Police on the roof of a research building at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla., on Friday, Feb. 8.

Updated at 12:56 p.m. ET: Police shot and wounded a man Friday morning on the roof of a building at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla.

The victim, described as in his 20s, was in serious condition at Delray Medical Center, Boca Raton Police Chief Dan Alexander told reporters Friday afternoon. He said the man produced a knife when officers showed up to investigate a report that a homeless person was on the roof, "and shots were fired."

The shooting occurred on the roof of a building in Research Park, an enclave on the north end of the university's property. It isn't part of the main university grounds, and there was never a threat to students, faculty or staff, police told NBC News.

The campus wasn't evacuated or placed on lockdown, but people who work in the building where the shooting took place told NBC station WPTV of West Palm Beach that they weren't being allowed back in.

Michelle Acevedo and M. Alex Johnson of NBC News contributed to this report.

Nice headline MSN NBC; use the words "shooting" and "college" in the same sentence to try and stir up everyone'e emotions. How low can you go ?

They could have found a better way to stop what could be a student who isn't thinking clearly for whatever reason armed with a knife on a college campus. It was only a knife.

Why did they shoot this guy? They could of used some form of non lethal force to subdue him.

What is wrong with these cops? I guess killing the homeless is one way of getting them off the streets.

Maybe we could do that with illegals and gangsters. That would free up a lot of resources.

I just hafta' laff . All these comments / opinions & hate for a story about a relatively simply law enforcement issue. I mean jeesh ! If everybody get's soo high strung over this what would happen if there was a REAL incident ? The guy was contained, taken to a hospital & treated, but somehow ??? This was a plot or plan to subvert our system of justice & economy because he was homeless & unfortunate BUT he had a knife. I must sympathize, emote and blame someone somehow. OBW... it was all Obama's & Eric Holder's fault ! Got it.

I am sure the police shot him because it was an "Assault Knife" that looked like a "Military Knife"!

First we need to excerise our "right to free speech"

Second we need to exceise our "right to bear arms"

Third we need to protect "we the people" from govenment agencies over stepping american laws and peoples rights
