Knowing full well that he broke the law and would likely face prosecution, he still insisted upon running for reelection, only to have to turn around and resign after the election. All of which was a fraud upon the voters and a waste of tax payer monies. His sentence should include having to pay the cost of running the replacement election and prison for a few years (5-10). Mike in Delray - I am, in no way, defending JJ Jr or his father, as I think they're both scumbags of the nth degree. However, one symptom of someone suffering from a manic episode of bipolar disorder is reckless spending of money, in the thought that they're doing an overall good for humanity. My wife recently spent time in the hospital after a manic episode, and we had one such instance (which, thankfully, I was able to stop before the charge was processed). Trust me, I wouldn't wish this mental illness on my worst enemy... it affects both those suffering from it and their loved ones as well.

Chip, I agree with much of what you said...that money in politics is the overriding means of (criminal) influence, regardless of one's party affiliation. However, I must disagree with your contention that neither party can be justifiably labeled more criminal, or more likely to engage in criminal activity, than the other. I firmly believe that Republicans, at least in the past 40-50 years, have demonstrated conclusively that they are far more likely to engage in criminal activity, especially when money is involved, based on a number of factors, not the least of which is the number of bribery charges and/or influence peddling cases brought against Republicans vs Democrats. I'm not suggesting that they should be treated differently when it comes to the consequences meted out, but I am suggesting that one party is more corrupt than the other, and I confess to being one of those internet stat seekers to support my conclusions. I realize that if one looks hard enough, and is selective enough, they can find stats to support virtually any conclusion. But I also believe that the truth, or something approaching the truth, is out there and worth looking for. I refuse to believe that researching a particular subject online is an exercise in futility because you have to weed through a whole lot of crap, as long as you're intelligently discerning enough to decide what's reasonably accurate vs very questionable. In the end, we all have to believe SOMETHING, and whether or not it approaches the truth depends on one's ability to set aside pre-conceived notions, and base conclusions on what we have determined to be reliable sources. Of course there's a certain amount of bias in ALL information, it's just choosing that which has the least amount of bias.

Politicians are all crooks. The problem is it's only a crime if they determine it's for personal gain and they don't consider pushing federal dollars to big campaign contributors personal gain. Spending 40K of contributors money on himself at least doesn't cost us where as a billion dollar federal contract awarded to a major contributor does. Not excusing him, he should get jail time but our laws need to be changed. Congressmen should be like judges and excuse themselves from voting on or trying to influence any vote that affects any major contributor.

I have read a lot of the posts above and something really stands out.

How can someone be re-elected when they were a virtual no show for over half the term? Also what does this say about the mentality of those who voted him back into Congress while knowing he is was under federal investigation?

I am saying we the people have a responsibility to vote the those out that are a plague on our nation Republican or Democrat.

Otto Kerner — Governor from 1961-1968. Resigned to become judge, then was convicted of bribery related to his tenure as governor. Sentenced to three years in prison.

William G. Stratton — Governor from 1953-1961. Indicted after leaving office on income-tax evasion charges but was acquitted.

Lennington Small — Governor from 1921-1929. Indicted while in office on embezzlement charges but was acquitted.

Joel Matteson — Governor from 1853-1857. After leaving office, a Sangamon County court ruled that he owed the state more than $253,000 in connection with a scheme to pay government contractors. His property was sold at auction.

Secretary of State Paul Powell — Roughly $800,000 was found stuffed in shoe boxes Powell's home after he died in 1970.

Auditor Orville Hodge — Pleaded guilty in the 1950s to embezzling more than $1.5 million from the state while in office. He used the money to buy two planes, four automobiles and homes in Illinois and Florida.

Attorney General William Scott — Convicted of tax fraud and spent a year in prison in the 1980s. Was Illinois attorney general from 1969-80.

Then they also elect Bobby Rush former Black Panther gang member although not convicted of anything since being in office that I know of: He has a rap sheat.

Rush's own apartment was raided in December 1969, where police discovered an unregistered pistol, rifle, shotgun, pistol ammunition, training manuals on explosives, booby traps, an assortment of communist literature, and a small amount of marijuana. Rush was imprisoned for six months in 1972 on a weapons charge, after carrying a pistol into a police station.

It only looks like it is mostly republicans because when a republican is involved in illegal activity it is constantly in the news and "republican" is almost always mentioned in the articles. Since Bush and his criminal administration had trashed the economy with unfunded wars and corporate bailouts, they needed to get behind an issue that they could blame on Obama, an issue that was of little consequence at the time, but they could use it to distract people from truly important issues, and that issue was the deficit. Baggers came out of the woodwork to hammer Obama on the deficit, an issue that most weren't even aware of, but they glommed onto it since there was really nothing else of any consequence they could blame on Obama, so they made it their mission to say whatever they had to to convince, or bamboozle, the electorate that the deficit was THE most important issue, and Obama couldn't be trusted to reduce the deficit. So they proceeded to make a lot of noise about the deficit, as well as the birther nonsense, then after he was elected, the baggers in the senate made it their mission to block every initiative Obama tried to pass with the filibuster, requiring 60 votes, rather than the usual majority, to pass virtually anything. They filibustered more bills than any other senate in history, simply to obstruct anything and everything Obama tried to pass, so in the 2012 election they could hammer Obama on how little he accomplished during his term. They simply couldn't stand the thought of a black President actually helping the country by passing bills that he initiated. They decided it was more important to do whatever was necessary to keep the black President from winning a 2nd term, rather than help the American people. If that isn't racist, I don't know what is Jim. Why would it be constitutional when Reagan did it but not when Obama did? Obama increased border agents well above any time in history and far more than Bush. Suing Arizona wouldn't get past the the lowest court levels if unconstitutional and wouldn't be successful unless they were violating federal law. Try again.

In four years o'bummer has only been able to drive it up to $16.4T (a mere 65% increase). And he is politically daring the republicans to try and take his check signing red-inked pen away from him.
