MRI machine snatches police officer's gun during burglary investigation at doctor's office

Police on Friday were investigating what they called a bizarre incident following an overnight burglary at a doctor's office in Carol Stream, Ill., outside Chicago.

An officer responding to the burglary walked into an MRI room at the office on the 600 block of East St. Charles Road Friday morning, the building's owner said. The MRI machine's magnetism pulled away the officer's gun, which became stuck in the machine.

Because there is no way to turn off the magnetism, the gun remained in place and no one was allowed inside the building.

Carol Stream police said no injuries were reported, and the MRI manufacturer was called to assist, the building owner said.

Police said the burglary also is under investigation.

Must have been a Democratic MRI machine the way it snatched that gun.

Obama approves.

Either way, it must be a government machine - nobody can figure out how to fix it.

Maybe we should drive one of these through the slums of Chicago and see what we pick up. Or maybe just place one on street corners and in front of the 7-11's

Just drive one of these through the drug-gang turf areas and it'd look like a porcupine in no time.

And when it yanks out grandma's hip replacement or pacemaker, or yanks some kid in a wheelchair out his window, that's just the cost of making America safer, right?

Yeah, helping people by forcefully taking their personal belongings and means for defending themselves. This machine is every liberal's wet dream.

I just heard on HLN the machine was de-powered, the gun was retrieved, and the machine was promptly arrested for gun theft.

What the unscientifically untrained do not realize is that a 15 Tesla MRI machine
can ERASE your credit cards and anything else that's magnetic from across the building.
15 Tesla is enough magnetic force to PULL the fillings out of your teeth if they
are made out of ferro-magnetic material.

There's a famous photo of a hospital cleaner who had his 100 lbs floor waxing machine
yanked right out of his hands FROM ACROSS THE ROOM and that machine being JAMMED
right into the MRI imaging chamber.

If you had a ferro-magnetic bracelet on your wrist, that MRI machine's magnetic field
could BREAK YOUR ARM if said bracelet was TIGHT on your wrist and that machine was on!

15 Tesla IS AN ENORMOUS amount of magnetic force. It could lift and could EASILY hold a 1000+ POUND WEIGHT!

So YEAH! Physics is the ULTIMATE LAW HERE! Mess with PHYSICS and IT will mess with YOU!

Henry,
Calm down. 15 Tesla medical imaging magnet in a Doctor's office? More like 1 - 3 Tesla. And that won't break your arm. It would erase your credit cards. It'll take a wrench, or a gun, away from you, if you get within a few feet of the magnet.
No way can you keep a 15 Tesla magnet for imaging humans, in a Doctor's office.
Magnets of that strength are not cleared for medical use.
"Unscientifically untrained"? What, ah...does that mean?
I'll have some of whatever Henry's smokin'.

1.5?

    #6.3 - Sat Feb 9, 2013 11:51 AM EST

Mea Culpa! 1.5 Tesla it is! NOT 15 Tesla!

And most doctors I know don't have an $800,000 MRI to $2.5 Mil FMRI
machines in their office...It's usually the BIG imaging Clinics and Hospitals
that have them. Actually 1.5 Tesla COULD break your arm as I recently
saw in a "Office Demo" of what happens to magnetic objects that
are attached to more solid items. That was QUITE the demonstration
as an OFFICE CHAIR at about 35 lbs went flying simply because
a large metallic band was attached. (Don't worry! A piece of heavy
plywood protected the imaging chamber!) The heavy plastic arm of
the chair snapped as it hit the plywood, so I don't see too much of a
leap to a human arm breaking as a large, unforgiving magnetized
    bracelet yanks it forward.

The next big breakthroughs in MRI imaging are the 3 and 5 Tesla
machines that DO NOT REQUIRE EXPENSIVE Liquid Helium cooling,
but rather simple and CHEAP Commercial-level Ammonia or
Thermo-Fluid Refrigeration which will bring the costs to less than
$150,000 which almost ANY clinic or private doctor could afford!

Why pay Siemens or GE $800,000 to $2.5 Million when a
$150,000 machine will do the trick!

15 and 30 Tesla machines are specialty Mag-Coil Systems used in
Fusion Energy Research and to demo the suspension in mid-air
of living Frogs and Guinea pigs for the media cameras!

THOSE could pull your fillings out from 25 meters away
and RIP the buttons off your jeans from 50 metres away!

Poor MSpielman, yes you can argue with the laws of Physics. Don't know that it'll do you much good, but argue you can.

An example is the theory that states that something can't travel faster than light. But I think that was pretty much put to rest with particles going faster at CERN during the search for Higgs Bosun. Now with that particular particle, really the smallest Gluon postulated, it can't be by itself since by definition and theory, there must be another gluon for it to stay in position, or multiple positions since something can be in multiple places. Or it could be in the 11th dimension, a postulated one since only 10 have been proven.

So yes, one can argue with the Laws of Physics. It just won't do you any good since they don't have a voice, unless you argue with yourself looking in a mirror.

Jakieboy.. How is your post relevant? You walk by a MAGNETIC RI device, your magnetic metals will be snatched from your possession. We know that iron or it's alloys and all other magnetic materials will be attracted to the magnet. There is usually a sign posted.

This is actually useful information. If you have a problem getting all guns away from people, just make a huge magnet over everywhere and grab the guns this way. Sort of an easy solution if you ask me. I just thought of it in like 20 seconds when I read this article. But I take no credit for it. My idea, but really I was inspired to think of it from the person that wrote the story and the cop that had his gun taken away by this machine. Another thing to do is this. Threaten the MRI machine with violence. If it and it's friends don't help make a giant gun taking device over everywhere they are in BIG trouble. I'm sure they will do it. MRI machine are really pretty stupid and fold when confronted. This was all pretty easy to solve for me.

Of course there are always copious signs posted at access doors and in MRI rooms warning about the danger of ferrous materials around MRI machines. So we will simply have to write this one off to yet another illiterate or arrogant cop who thought the laws of physics do not pertain to those with a badge.

I don't understand .... kill the power to the room or building.....those are electromagnets??

              Reply#13 - Sat Feb 9, 2013 1:33 AM EST

MRI magnets are superconducting magnets. The magnetic field will continue to exist as long as the coil is cold even in the absence of external power. They are cooled to extremely low temperatures with liquid helium so that the windings of the electromagnet that forms the solenoid are superconducting. In order to reduce the magnetic field the solenoid has to be 'quenched'. This process involves venting the coolant at which point the windings are no longer superconducting and become 'lossy' (have resistance). The energy stored in the magnetic field will be converted into heat which will cause even more rapid boiling of the liquid helium as it dissipates the thermal energy.

This is a very expensive undertaking as the MRI will have to be checked out by technicians, refilled with liquid helium and re-cooled to a superconducting state before it can be used again.

There are some good videos on youtube that show this. Just search 'MRI Quench'

At every MRI there is a sign warning not to bring ANY METAL OBJECTS into the MRI room -- for this specific reason. Of course, the cop probably considered himself immune from the laws of physics. They may not get the steel parts of the gun back, but it will be worth a laugh hearing the cop's explanation at the next squad debriefing! LOL

The MRI machine's magnetism pulled away the officer's gun

This can only happen if the MRI is on. Who leaves a hideously expensive MRI on all night? This is not like leaving your loptop on in the kitchen.
