Clobbered by record-setting blizzard, Northeast begins to dig out

NBC's Ron Mott reports that cleanup is slowly underway from the Blizzard of 2013 is underway in the Northeast.

Updated at 4:30 p.m. ET: A gusting winter storm buried parts of the Northeast under 3 feet of snow and left millions of people with little to do Sunday but wait — for lights to come on, flights to resume and packed-in cars to be freed.

Transportation systems slowly flickered back. New York airports reopened on limited schedules, and around 11 p.m. Saturday night Boston’s Logan International Airport welcomed in its first flight since the storm hit. All major airports are operational again, but many in the affected area are still experiencing delays and cancellations.

Still, for the most part, the country’s most populous region came to a standstill for a day. Elected officials pleaded with people to stay inside, even after the snow stopped, to let emergency crews and snowplows do their work.

Full coverage from The Weather Channel

“This is going to go on for a number of days,” Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy said. “This will not all be done today.”

Gov. Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island warned that while it was no longer snowing, the danger hadn't ended.

"People need to take this storm seriously, even after it's over. If you have any kind of heart condition, be careful with the shoveling," The Associated Press quoted him as saying.

The storm was blamed for at least 10 deaths, including a child poisoned by carbon monoxide and an 81-year-old Connecticut woman who was clearing snow with a blower who was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver.

At 4:00 p.m. ET Sunday, 290,726 homes and businesses were without power in New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut, down from a total of about 650,000. Some schools in the region said that they would be closed on Monday, according to the AP.

NBC's Ron Allen joins Lester Holt with the latest from Connecticut, a state that had some of the highest snow totals.

And along the coast, including among people battered by Superstorm Sandy less than four months ago, flooding was a concern. The snowstorm announced itself with hurricane-force winds and churned up offshore waters.

When the snow finally stopped Saturday afternoon, cities and towns reported eye-popping snow totals — 40 inches in Hampden, Conn., 38 inches in Milford, Conn., and 34 inches in New Haven. Portland, Maine, got almost 32 inches, breaking its record.

Boston reported a hair under 25 inches, placing the storm in that city’s five-worst on record. Concord, N.H., reported 2 feet. Central Park in New York — by afternoon a sledder’s paradise — reported 11.4 inches.

The National Weather Service recorded peak wind gusts of 83 mph in Cuttyhunk, Mass., the strength of a Category 1 hurricane. There were gusts of 72 mph in Westport, Conn., and 76 mph in East Boston.

On the Long Island Expressway, which looked more like a moonscape than a busy thoroughfare, 60 to 100 cars were stuck in the snow, and police officers worked through the night to free people from cars and get them to safety.

Richard Ebbrecht, a chiropractor, told the AP that he left his office in Brooklyn at 3 p.m. Friday and got stuck six or seven times on the expressway and other roads.

“We were all helping each other, shoveling, pushing,” he said.

He gave up and settled in for the night just two miles from home. At 8 a.m., he walked the rest of the way.

“I could run my car and keep the heat on and listen to the radio a little bit,” he told the AP. “It was very icy under my car. That’s why my car is still there.”

Among the 10 deaths blamed on the storm was an 11-year-old boy in Boston who was overcome by carbon monoxide while keeping warm in the car.

NBC's Ron Mott joins Lester Holt with an updates on the blizzard's aftermath in Rhode Island.

The boy had been helping his father shovel out the car and got cold. The father started the engine, and the boy got inside, a Boston fire spokesman told the AP. But the car’s exhaust pipe was covered by a snowbank.

In a separate incident, also in Boston, a 20-year-old man was found dead in his car. He was also overcome by carbon monoxide fumes.

In Auburn, N.H., a man was killed after losing control of his car and hitting a tree. He was found dead in his car by local authorities.

In Prospect, Conn., an 81-year-old woman was using a snowblower when a driver struck and killed her and fled the scene, Malloy said. In Danbury, a man slipped on a porch and was found dead Saturday morning, the mayor told NBC Connecticut.

A 53-year-old man in Bridgeport, Conn., was found dead under snow at his house, possibly from hypothermia or a cardiac arrest, authorities said. A 55-year-old New Milford man died after he suffered a heart attack while plowing. A Shelton man, 49, died while digging out his truck.

A man in Livingston County, N.Y., was plowing his driveway with a tractor Friday night when the tractor went off the edge of the road and fell on top of him.

And in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., an 18-year-old woman lost control of her car in the snow and struck Muril M. Hancock, 74, who was walking near the shoulder, police said Friday. Hancock died at the hospital.

On the Long Island Expressway, dozens of cars were stuck in the snow, and police officers worked through the night to free people from cars and get them to safety. NBC's Anne Thompson reports.

In New York, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Saturday morning that 2,200 pieces of equipment were on the streets, salting and plowing. He said that all the primary streets in the city had been plowed.

“I think it’s fair to say that we were very lucky,” he said. “Looks like we dodged a bullet.”

He said the city had offered help to other places hit harder by the storm.

In Massachusetts, Gov. Deval Patrick had ordered all cars off the roads but announced Saturday afternoon that he was lifting the ban for Interstate 91 and the slice of the state to the west.

Connecticut had a similar ban in place, but Malloy could not say when it might be lifted. He said Saturday afternoon that he expected it to remain in place at least for the rest of the day.

Transportation systems slowly flickered back to life Saturday, but for the most part, the country's most populous region came to a standstill for a day. NBC's Rehema Ellis reports.

The winter storm was fueled by two weather systems — a so-called clipper pattern that swept across the Midwest and a band of rain that churned up from the South. They clashed explosively over the Northeast on Friday.

The storm arrived in earnest Friday night. The governors of New York, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island all declared states of emergency.

More than 800 National Guard soldiers and airmen were activated in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York to provide roadway support, emergency transportation and back-up for first responders, the Department of Defense said.

I wish it snowed in Florida. Being from Philly, I miss the snow. I miss the rolling hills. I miss the change in seasons. There is nothing festive about palm trees and Christmas. I miss cheesesteaks. I miss English. I wish it snowed in Florida.

What does it take to convince our rat race species to QUIT driving during serious weather events? Unless you're in labor for childbirth or having a heart attack STAY AT HOME. Sheesh.

I almost think people ought to be ticketed for driving, then getting stuck, then abandoning their car to block the road from being cleared. Blocking emergency vehicles needs to carry a serious penalty.

Depends which part. I lived in Florida and New York and moved back to Philly after the ghetto and sick things I saw there. Not saying that it's all bad, but for what I spent in the places I lived, I moved back to Philly and got a nice house in a great neighborhood in Philadelphia.

With experience of 42 years, I have learned that usually the National Weather Service gets it wrong about 90% of the time.

They nailed it this time, which, statistically, should be classified as luck.

I am just glad that drought-stricken areas of this region received some much-needed moisture.

As an addition, were the Party of No not petulant toddlers, we would resurrect the infrastructure of this county by, in part, buring our power lines....like they do in more civilzed Europe.

When the blizzard of 1978 hit southwestern oh, the National Guard was called to plow out secondary highways, county, and township roads. There were cars completely covered in snowdrifts and the Guardsmen plowed right through. Too damn bad if you were silly enough to be in such weather.

The great thing about rural living is, you learn to adapt and settle in. Neighbors helped each other- farmers used tractors with commercial-sized snow blowers, going around the neighborhood, opening driveways and charging nothing. People with snowmobiles run into town to pick up medication, baby formula, kerosene for heaters, again- no charge.

In emergencies, call 911. you will not get anywhere faster jumping in your vehicle in such conditions and keep enough supplies to last a week or so. When all else fails, adapt.

Postive thoughts in your direction, buddy. There are "adjustments" where ever we choose to go. Seems like we are losing "seasonal" changes all around; but I don't want to stir the global warming folks into a lather, just making an observation. Hang in there...maybe think about what you don't have to deal with in Philly.

Best wishes to our Northern families during this weather event. "Be careful, mom!"

Hope, you are correct. People are just too stupid when it comes to weather. They think, I can drive in this,no problem. Then when they get into an accident,it's the weathers fault. People also never seem to learn that if it starts snowing before it's time to go to work, stay home. If it starts snowing before you leave work, leave early so you can get home safely. SLOW down, take your time arrive alive.

Its hard to dig out from 30 inches of snow, you just can't fling it away in like most occasions, you generally have to lift it up past your shoulders, back breaking to say the least. Even with a good snow blower you'll still be shoveling. There were times when i could only see the peak of my roof top.

Farewell and good luck Easterners, Minnesota talking..

Honest J,

What the hell did you expect in Florida? It's overrun with illegals that refuse to speak English, and you don't have to be Einstein to know they don't get much snow down there.

Better bet for you is to move to north Georgia or South Carolina where we have the best of both worlds. We still have a definite change in seasons plus a little snow once or twice a year. Just enough snow to freak out the locals. It's hilarious.

I've been around longer than 42 years, and I have to disagree. At least in recent years, 90% of the time I find the weather predictions to be spot on with regard to temperature, sunshine and precipitation, even in forecasts extending out several days.

Yes, they are going to miss one; the weather is simply not that predictable. But wrong 90% of the time? No way.

when I was growing up I experienced these things and they still exist today in the right parts of the country. But one of the things my father taught me was weather comes in a 40 year cycle every 40 years we get the same effects like the storms of 78 with some exceptions. So in the winter of 17/18 guess what we are in store for.

I live in Northeast Ohio, and remember the blizzard of '78; was young, but old enough to remember all I did along with my friends, how we (family) mostly hunkered in for a while.... being that age, I didn't know of roof collapsing, my father still fighting traffic for work until unpassable; I just enjoyed the tar out of it!

Now, I wouldn't relish a repeat but do have to say that some is my fault. Like many, until a few bad snows this winter, I NEVER had 3 or 5 days of supplies, a kerosene heater much less kerosene, etc... . I became 'one of those' for some time, being used to at least walking to stores for what's needed, thinking they couldn't shut down, the power would be reliable (as nothing had happened in years, at least in my area, for it to go down for more than a half day).

Became soft. Now, thinking back to my younger days when winter WAS winter, snow on Halloween and Thanksgiving, seeing grass was a rarity until the end of March.... I've started respecting the weather, the season, and realizing this IS what happens in Northeast Ohio.

Granted, one hell of an intense storm over these Easterly states, but have to be on the same page as Kim; common sense, be prepared, and enjoy some of the best parts of being hunkered in. There's a lot to be said for those times, memories to be made, and for some of us, a much needed 'break'.

Having said that, however, the other side of the coin; sincere wishes for the best for those more or less stranded, having lost power and dealing with this intensity of weather following Sandy. I take no pleasure in romanticizing others losses or desparity.

I remember a snow storm of 13 inches in March in Mississippi years ago when I was a kid. We had NO PLOWS and NO SALT. All we had were four-wheel drive vehicles. I also remember ice storms that knocked out power for a week or so when we would have to cook food on the open fire of the fireplace and all sleep in the den to keep from freezing to death. In some ways it was an adventure, but it was also a huge inconvenience. We've always had these big storms-I think people just forget about them.

My thoughts are with those in the Northeast who are without power and are no doubt cold and experiencing the same sort of things we did-though they are probably even colder. Hopefully their power will not be out as long as ours was at times and their lives will soon be back to some semblance of normalcy. I really feel for those who are still suffering the effects of Hurricane Sandy-one blow on top of another has to be hard, but I pray this may increase their strength and resilience and they may draw together as families and communities to help each other.

The Great Blizzard of 1947 was a record-breaking snowfall that began on Christmas without prediction and brought the northeastern United States to a standstill. The snowstorm was described as the worst blizzard after 1888.[1] The storm was not accompanied by high winds, but the snow fell silently and steadily. By the time it stopped on December 26, measurement of the snowfall reached 26.4 inches (67.1 cm) in Central Park in Manhattan.[2] Meteorological records indicate that warm moisture arising from the Gulf Stream fed the storm's energy when it encountered its cold air and greatly increased the precipitation. Automobiles and buses were stranded in the streets,[3][4] subway service was halted, and parked vehicles initially buried by the snowfall were blocked further by packed mounds created by snow plows once they were able to begin operation. Once trains resumed running, they ran twelve hours late. Seventy-seven deaths are attributed to the blizzard.

Drifts exceeded ten feet and finding places to place snow from plowing became problematic, creating snow piles that exceeded twelve feet. In Manhattan some of the snow was dumped into the sewers, where it melted in the warm waste water flowing to the rivers. When possible it was dumped directly into the Hudson River and the East River. Most suburban areas did not have such nearby alternatives to stacking the snow up. Low temperatures that winter led to the snowfall remaining on the ground until March of the next year.

Communities in New Jersey among the Watchung Mountains and beyond, received the same or greater snowfall depths that created similar problems, which became threatening because trucks that carried coal to heat the majority of homes could not be dispatched to replenish diminishing supplies. Food supplies ran low and resourcefulness in moving people to alternative shelter and distribution of supplies became essential. Communities with central gas connections for heating provided havens for those who could reach those homes and facilities. Although many homes in the region had fireplaces, few had generous supplies of wood because fireplaces only were used occasionally.

Connecticut[5] and upstate New York were affected as well as most of the Mid-Atlantic region.

With no weather reports generated from stations along its path, the storm was not predicted and it advanced over land from the Atlantic Ocean in a pattern that is the opposite of most snowstorms for the area.[6]

This snowstorm arrived without advance warning because weather patterns for the northeastern United States generally flow from the west to the east following the prevailing winds. Numerous weather stations along that typical path provide reports that are used for predictions in advance of storms moving eastward. There are no weather stations in the Atlantic Ocean. This storm progressed westward and affected the Great Plains shortly afterward, but the effect of moisture from the Gulf Stream feeding the volume of snow lessened as the distance from the warm water flow increased.

    THAT, was a snowstorm!!!

Listen folks, the last 40 years of being raise in the Northeast (NH), getting snow is what happens in the winter time. The same goes for the state of New Jersey where people still do not get it. I spent 18 year in NH, 4 years on Martha's Vineyard (MA)...snow was inevitable when the fall, winter and even early spring months hit. I remember growing up having to design Halloween costumes over snowsuits or wearing boots and cute little furry coats with hand muffs for Easter in April. Once in a while, such as May 1 of 1987 it would snow in May. I recall a Labor Day weekend in Maine, about 2 feet of snow one day then walking along the beach in 80 degree weather in a bathing suit watching the snow melt. In NH and on Martha's Vineyard there is no such thing as putting away the winter clothes for the summer time. Having a fourth of July pool party in the afternoon then going to watch the fireworks with a blanket in tow while wearing jeans or sweatpants and a jacket.

Here in NJ...one year it can be a snowy winter between December and March!! Having lived here for the last 17 years, I recall one April where it was freezing cold in the 20s and teens followed by a week of 100 degree (no humidity) temperatures before it became more seasonal temps. Snow is not new in this state. A friend showed me pictures growing up. Looks like they got plenty of snow back in the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. So what is everyone complaining about around here when disaster or Mother Nature takes over?

It is all about convenience here in New York City and New Jersey. There is little to hint about being rural. Convenience is everywhere. Even small towns have convenience stores all around. Not in NH. If you lived in a rural town...the nearest convenience store is a drive away to the next town over or two. if people are inconvenienced in the aftermath of a storm or natural disaster, they blame officials for not giving them enough warning. And when people fail to heed those warnings they expect people to risk their own lives to rescue them from their stupidity. When a disaster or big storm is overly predicated people are quick to blame officials for pushing up the hype so stores can make money.

Better safe than sorry, is a saying that stands for something. Stupidity is a poor excuse for not being prepared in the first place. Why wait until someone tells you what is coming, when you can be prepared and save the hassle of running around? I am always prepared. I always have bottled water available. It is one of the many staples I do not allow to run low. I keep a water-proof storage bag with clothes, blanket, jacket, towel and other accessories specifically for any type of emergency. I have an identical one in the trunk of my car. I keep candles, mechanical lighter, flashlight, batteries and plenty of canned food and other nonperishables in stock. Aside from storing enough for myself, I made sure I have enough for another person because not everyone is thinks, "Better safe than sorry".

Common sense is not so common anymore!! People need to move away from the convenience of things and stop relying on them like life-essentials when those things are meaningless when you are prepared for anything. God does not do it to anyone, we do it to ourselves!! This is not a political thing...it is about self-absorbed stupidity of "me me me...what about ME"!

Good Morning..Pardon my ignorance I live in Australia and had to go to England to see snow. Thought it was absolutely brilliant but I am sure the novelty would wear off. But, what happens when all this snow melts??? Does this mean you will now cop floods as well or does it somehow find its way to rivers and creeks etc.? I am just interested to know as we see houses and cars buried etc over here but never when it all starts to melt...Good luck and stay safe where ever you are....

Hi shona1! I am not familiar with the northeast but in west Texas and eastern new mexico it is not as simple as melting and soaking or draining. Oh no, what happens is that it melts to a slush, gets rutted by traffic then refreezes during the night.

No fun riding a motorcycle as I did, I would pick a rut going my direction, ride with my feet skidding on the ice. When I would need to change directions, I would pick the front wheel up and drag it to a rut going in a new direction.

When it began to seriously thaw, it would make a slippery mush.

Still, if it's wet, we'll take it, much like I imagine, you would. I had a friend who immigrated to Australia around 1970, who said that it was very similar to Texas. He didn't stay long, he told me that they changed the laws so that he could no longer make a living by ranching.

I'm with you, Honest. I've grown up with snowy winters and, even though I live in the same area, the last few winters haven't given us much. This winter has been good as far as snow goes. We still have snow from last month sitting under snow from last week, and we got a bit more yesterday and today. Didn't care for the ice storm a few weeks ago, nor the freezing temps that lasted two weeks, but the snow totally makes up for it.

Given a choice of weather in Florida, or North East, Hurricane or Snow Blizzard, honestly what whould you rather have. New Jersey experienced both within 4 1/2 months.

A gusting winter storm buried parts of the Northeast under 3 feet of snow and left millions of people with little to do Saturday but wait — for lights to come on, flights to resume and packed-in cars to be freed.

Oh REALLY? Little to do but WAIT??? How about sitting by candle light reading a great book? Playing cards with your kids? How about checking on your elderly neighbor and inviting him/her to your house for a visit to wait out the storm.

I hope we all read this opening volley of a story with the same feelings. If media feeds us this sort of psychology are we buying it? Really?

I think it's a sad symptom of our society. Now why don't they open with something like this:

A gusting winter storm buried parts of the Northeast under 3 feet of snow and left millions of people with little to do time to relax on Saturday but wait enjoying the peace and quiet with friends and family as the storm passed through the area — for lights to come on, flights to resume and packed-in cars to be freed.

I agree with Hope, why are people idiots and go out trying to drive in weather conditions like that? I saw news video of abandoned vehicles, mostly passenger cars, which couldn't make it through 10 inches, let alone 20+. Even more amazing, quite a few of these people abandoned their vehicles with the headlights and emergency flashers still on, what did they think they were going to come back to when the snow stopped?

My Ford pickup has a 4-wheel drive option, and it really makes a difference in snow over standard rear wheel or even front wheel drive, but I still wouldn't attempt to drive in conditions like that. It doesn't do you much good to have 4-wheel drive when there are 12-15 vehicles turned all different directions and blocking the road in front of you, you can't go over or around them. Heavy snow, no problem: Stay home, make some popcorn, pour yourself a drink, and grab a good book or put on a good movie, and enjoy some guilt free, lazy R&R.

Dman, I agree, the weather people around here are pretty good at calling things, snow storms or thunderstorms. Meteorology has improved considerably over the past 20-39 years.

What does it take to convince our rat race species to QUIT driving during serious weather events?

Option B is to learn to drive and not judge everyone else because you are afraid.

Part of learning to drive is knowing when NOT to drive, it isn't a matter of being afraid, but of being intelligent and exercising good, common sense, when you see all the abandoned vehicles, that should be obvious, they weren't designed to function in weather conditions like that.

wilsonarden......we're happy for you......now go away.

Wow, the skies falling, no it's only snow. So this it what those hardy folks in the northeast have been reduced to. Three, at the most, of snow and everything comes to a halt. Why is this only news in Nanny central areas? I could see it, if it were to happen to say, L.A., Brownsville or Tampa, but it's the northeast. Heavy snow is nothing new.

Funny how it's not national news headlines for days when it's Montana, Wyoming, Colorado or any place else, funny how that works, isn't it? As for not driving in snow, as has been suggested by some, In placed other than major cities, life must go on during in climate weather. We have to get out, the animals need to be fed, the farms need to continue running. Not everywhere has mass transit trains, buses and trolleys.

Every heard of snowmobiles, snow cats and other personal transport vehicles designed to operate in heavy snow? They do make them and given the northeast has a history of heavy snow, why do so many not have one? Why do you not have back up generators? They make them that run on gas, natural gas, propane, diesel so why not have one? It costs nothing when not in use and when needed it's cheap. Why would you not have a house without a dual fuel furnace? Why not keep three to six months worth of food and personal items on hand? Sounds like over dependence on systems that can and do fail. How about some preparedness? Oh that's right, people who prepare for things are extremists in your view. Your opinion, but, we are warm, have lights, food, a means to cook it and can get around on our own no matter what the weather hands out. Perhaps you could consider this before the next major storm, and it will happen again. People out here in fly over land know winter weather can be harsh, so we act accordingly. Being prepared for it makes a huge difference.

But, I guess if the people in the region became prepared to deal with the weather it wouldn't make national news. All the suffering, all the drama, all a non-issue if people would just prepare for it. On the other hand, if you expect government to provide everything and ride to the rescue, which it can't do, you will continue to suffer when the weather turns bad. Your choice I suppose. But then, common sense seems anything but common these days.

FLORIDA ? A columnist named Dave Barry recently moved to Miami...he tells everyone there, that he comes from the USA.....

Seriously, he says that he has had to visit Miami many times over the years, and hat he is offended when he checks in to hotels in Miami, because they all greet him and speak to him first in Spanish.....

I live in Boston, and we're moving to Maui, an island in Hawaii, this year. We have owned a 2br condo, right on the ocean for 27 years, time to retire...wife needs the warmth,it does get very cold in Boston, about 10 days each Winter....but me ? I don't know if I can handle 365 days of sun and warm temperatures...sounds abnormal...we stayed there for 3 months to see what it was like...got to be same old, same old......

In Massachusetts, as we come out of winter and put away our ice skates and skis,we tap our Sugar Maple Trees for sap to make pure maple syrup,we get a treat as the migratory birds return ( over 1000 species), then the 1st breath of Spring, buds on the trees,Hyacinths,Daffodils and Tulips arise.....later it's into Summer...lobsters,Cape Cod,the Mountains of Vermont,Maine Coast, western Massachusetts rolling hills..great old American history....Revolutionary War re-enactments, fire works, concerts on the banks of the Charles River. The Boston Marathon, 1st in the nation (1897)...and the "running of the Freshman" as students return to Boston...Greater Boston has MORE than 100 colleges and universities....more than any other place on Earth...and these kids liven up the town, median age here is just 27 as a result...

And Boston is a safe and clean city, with symphonic orchestras, museums, boating etc....there are 33 islands in Boston Harbor alone, many of which you can camp out on....

In the Fall, the air turns crisp at night, and the sky takes on a dark, beautiful blue hue...the leaves begin to turn, thousands of tourists from all over the World come to witness our Autumn, which only exists elsewhere in the Northern islands of Japan...I know,I know, some parts of the USA enjoy the turning of some trees, but that is unlike the Fall in New England,as we have a vast array of tree species...

Then, the annual Head of the Charles Regatta...largest rowing regatta in the World,9000 rowers, best of the best, from all over Earth, in 8 person shells, 4's,2's and singles............

Wow,,,,I really don't want to leave here....even for Maui....what am I doing ? Doing something BIG, for love.

Morning stonepipe2 nice to see you this early.

On a more somber note, how sad lives have already been lost. This storm has been worse then the weather man predicted. I really hope people stay indoors, off the roads and are taking every precaution they can. I can recall from my youth, such storms like this, and worse. One that almost took my life. So I pray people are using common sense and took steps before hand so they could ride this one out.

With the chance of flooding in some parts of the northeast, I have no doubts some folks must just be feeling anxious as they watch the coastal waters and winds. How awful to have survived Sandy, only to now be facing the possibility of more flooding!

Mother nature sure knows how to keep man humble. Weeding out the unlucky, elderly, foolish and careless. At times all one can say is, "There but for the grace of God, go I." Or if you don't believe in God, just," Dang, I could have made that same error. It just wasn't my time.?

CNN.com was running an article at the bottom right of their home page about Stuart Appleby leading a golf tournament in 2007 . 6 years later it was still there. I sent them emails on 3 occasions and they did finally take it down.

I'm always amazed at the idiots who get caught in these storms. The whole world has been talking about the problems that are coming & these people miss it all, blocking highways, interfering with cleanup & rescue, wind up being rescued & cost the community money and sometimes the lives of rescuers. The standard procedure should be put the unnecessarily rescued in jail for causing a public danger. Let them pay the cost of their stupidity.

closed to "non essential" traffic means if you don't need to be in the area(don't live there), or aren't there to perform a vital service(power/snow removal/emergency services), then you don't get to pass thru.

When there is a snow storm in the midwest it's not a big deal it's just snow! Things slow down for a few days then back to normal. We had 10" here in south east WI the other day and never misted a lick!

It's all about the money. A big media blitz by the east-coast liberals means they're now allowed to demand Obama and Washington fork-up large amounts of taxpayer money. Don't you know, the east-coasters are the privileged and chosen in our society. The rest of us just live to serve and humor them.

My thoughts and prayers are for all of you suffering in the Northeast. For those who live in flood prone areas and have just recovered from Sandy I am sorry. That said when the flood comes this time please take the money and move somewhere safer and allow the flood plane to be just that. No sense in continuing to fight the elements. If you believe in Global Warming you are just about to experience more. If you believe the Earth is becoming like a "worn out garment" from the Bible you are about to experience more. Take the opportunity to escape and make a better life for you and your family. If you are living in an Urban area you might want to become more rural where folks take care of each other and know how to survive the weather.

"Monkey", you DO think like one. Are you just being sarcastic, or did you REALly just imply that we shouldn't give as much of a sh*t about people in ALL states because Wall Street and some overpriced stone carvings dedicated to important people aren't there? (H*ll, well, actually, Rushmore's in S. Dakota) So, according to your Special Ed logic, the more populated an area, the more newsworthy. If 90 people die in a blizzard in Nebraska or Iowa next week, it probably wouldn't be as important as this little, random storm (actually been a huge blizzard with 4 or 5 foot drifts in DC area the last 2 years, so don't know why they're acting like this is "out of the ordinary") because the Northeastern, overpopulated sh*thole being "more important" and NINE folks dying? (Haven't seen any description of causes of death, yet, so won't make any specualation on why they passed) Go back to sleep, you coose.

Both are obviously important, but a storm in New York and Boston is not unimportant, as the original post alluded.

The Libs and Gore changed the term from global warming to climate change, that way then can say all weather events are caused by man. If it is Cold ,Warm, Hot, Snow, No Snow, Sunny, Cloudy, Rain, No Rain, . Droughts,Tornadoes, Hurricaines or Blizards they will all be blamed on man made climate change. Mother nature is laughing her ass off at them, she has controlled the earth for billions of years and will continue to be in charge!

But you better hurry. Those groups have already spent billions to understand the problems and already have massive amounts of resources re-allocated to combat coastal and polar threats.

Yeah, if I had a struggling cable TV station and someone from Qatar with a boatload of money offered me $100 million for it, I'd definitely have to think about it for awhile.

Although I understand the sentiment, in 1978 we actually were stuck inside for nearly a week, due to the travel ban while they dug out the highways. This time the governor stopped travel early and avoided that mess - but of course, people whined about that here too.

IMTD is only partially correct. yes, Gore just sold to Al Jazeera. and yes, it's still global warming. My husband is an environmental physicist for a huge global corp and the scientists are unanimous that it's been happening (scientists who are physicists, biologists, chemists, agronomists...) and we're at the edge of too late to do stop it. These are mainly repuplican scientists although my partner is as progressive as they come. This is not related to gun control but banning assault weapons and 30 round "clips" is a good idea.

Can't fix stupid for all those drivers that got stuck in their cars. They warned people for days the storm was coming and why would anyone get caught out in that much snow? I guess they could add a law to fine people for such stupidity as to block the roads so that snowplows and emergency vehicles cannot get through. A huge fine of $1000 might keep some of these people off the road if they had to be helped out or car towed out of the way. And major storm in the midwest, no thanks, I just watch all the drama in other states on my TV and laptop news. It rained here again on Thursday, so the ground is getting its moisture it desperately needs. This is the second year in a row I haven't had to use my snowblower that is taking up dead space in my garage. Very unusual to get no more than an inch of snow at a time here in central IL and the coldest it has been is a few overnights in the single digits. The weather patterns have definitely changed over the years and it is from global warming no matter what those people say that don't believe in scientific data. If your in the east and this storm, just sit tight, it is only snow people, guess what you will survive it!

For one thing "Mom in Illinois", yes, there are many stupid people who fail to recognize a real weather threat. However, there are also a lot of people who have to be at work like police, fire, medical personnel, etc. And others who just cannot afford to lose any time at work. There does also seem to be a developing pattern of "storms of the century" on a more regular basis, which is what many of those who study this sort of thing have stated. Climate change/Global Warming scientists have shown that it is not simply a change of weather, but also of how more severe storms will come into existence. Here in the NW USA, I have a 2001 vehicle, and only once in all those years have I had to put on snow tires. The last bad snow we had here was in 94, and many employers were warned to let people go home early, but most didn't allow it. My employer said anyone leaving early would not need to come back as they would be let go. The result was that a lot of people stayed at work and by the time 4:00PM came around, the roads were already clogged and closed down by stranded/stuck vehicles.

Well most people that are 20-50 don't stay home much doing nothing so to seem we go outside about just as often and have the same variables at play. 7 billion people plus 1 billion unaccounted for, there is bounds in a massive ant hill for a few to pass during the construction of the establishment.

How many replicas does it take to sustain 8 billion on a rolling time factor?

It's always so easy for a governor or a mayor or somebody with a title to tell everybody to stay off the roads, stay home. How about if you work at a hospital, which is open 24/7, and you have an administrator who will write you up if you don't make it into work due to weather? My job has been threatened by my supervisor because I couldn't make it to work due to a blizzard, and in front of my house a state snowplow was stuck in a 3 foot drift. If the county issues a tow ban and you go off the road, you're gonna sit there. Catch 22, damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Well the governor put a travel ban for everybody except essential people. And folks like those who work in hospitals were able to get a ride in a hum-vee from the national guard.

No wonder I watch foreign news networks, they run circles around these unbias American news networks

I just looked at the radar, and the storm in the midwest is nowhere near the size or strength of the blizzard in the Northeast - not to mention the fact that the blizzard impacts over 50 million people and almost a third of the national GDP. The storm over the midwest could sit there for a week and not have the same degree of impact.

Ive seen plenty of coverage from the weather channel regarding that Midwest storm and it was assigned a name. Northeast winter storms usually intensify faster and produce stronger winds than Midwest winter storms because Northeast storms have this thing called the ocean to feed off of. Plus the Northeast has a megalopolis.

What the heck was an inexperienced 18 year old doing that was so important for her to be out in dangerous driving conditions and the to wind up killing someones dad or grandfather or brother?????????????? Yah, I say give those idiots tickets, tow their vehicles, and make them pay, only way to teach them a lesson. Then maybe future weather occurances will keep more people off the streets. You all live in an area prone to these types of storms so you ought to know better. HEED THE EXPERTS WARNINGS FOR YOUR SAFTY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS. I live in the mountains at 8,500 feet and when they tell me a weather event is coming, I make sure that I have all the necessary food, gas, wood for the fireplace, my generator is operational and my four-wheel drive vehicle is ready in case of an emergency. PREPARE AND BE SENSIBLE. Always remember though, you can trust my friend Winkie there in the Whitehouse to watch your back. What about all those who work in situations where it is not possible to "shut down", go/stay home? The police, fire, emergency, medical institutions, etc.? Can they just close down and stay home? And naturally you have to throw in something about Obama didn't you? As if there was/is anything he could do about the weather and the resulting conditions.

Coast anyway) storm was coming, possible snow dumps of ft, not inches. Guess what, stupid decides they have to be out driving.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with being prepared. I built a little substation with batteries and dc/ac converters to run TV,Lights etc. but next step is to build one just for my furnace( I recommend a trained profetional to help with the wiring switchout) ...Frigid cold can be worst enemy...I do have a sense of humor and laugh at some of the jokes ( like the political ones ) but there are 100s of 1000s of people that lost power and more to come which is very serious. Good luck to you all out there. Stay warm...

You are right. I keep putting off getting a legit back-up generator. The larger units always seem to run off of natural gas, which is not in my neighborhood. I need a generator that can tap off of my oil tank. Losing power in cold weather is not fun.

This storm really hit where i lived hard, and how many people are going to risk losing their job in the middle of a recession?

Its easy to say we should have been prepared. If you live in this area (I am from Milford, Connecticut, one of the hardesf hit with 38 inches) you would know that our weather forecasters tend to either waffle or over predict. Yes we got complacent, but considering that the last time we got hit anything like this was 1978 its easy to see why. Our normal snowfall over the course of a season is only about 12 - 18 inches. I prepared on the same level I did for the storm of 78, and I was still under prepared. Some of the problems i have encountered were my fault, some weren't.

Am I tired of being stuck? You bet. But in this day and age of social media I fail to understand why our elected officials are not keeping citizens more informed on the progress being made. I can deal with anything if I know what to expect.
