The search for Christopher Dorner, the ex-LAPD officer accused in a string of revenge murders entered its third day Saturday, authorities said, exactly four years after his dismissal from the LAPD. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.
Updated at 8:42 p.m. ET: The search for Christopher Dorner, the ex-LAPD officer accused in a string of revenge murders entered its third day Saturday in the snowy mountains of San Bernardino, Calif., authorities said, exactly four years after his dismissal from the LAPD.
Police say they believe Dorner is on a mission to execute former LAPD colleagues and superiors and their families to avenge his 2009 firing. They believe he murdered a retired captain’s daughter and her fiancé in Irvine, Calif., on Sunday, then killed one cop and wounded two others in shootings Thursday.
In an interview with San Francisco's KCBS, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said Saturday that the department would re-examine the details that led to Dorner's dismissal.
Police spokesman Cmdr. Andrew Smith said the decision was made to ensure the public the LAPD is "fair and transparent" on Dorner's firing.
Dorner accused his training officer in August 2007 of kicking a mentally ill man during an arrest in San Pedro. An internal affairs investigation into his accusations concluded that the training officer had not kicked the mentally ill man and that Dorner's statements were false. He was later notified that he would be fired for making false statements.
Dorner's former boss and L.A. police chief from 2002 to 2009, William Bratton, said earlier that Saturday marked an important date in Dorner's history.
"Four years ago he received his discharge papers, if you will, his dismissal papers on Feb. 9, 2009," Bratton said. "A day of significance certainly in his mind that inasmuch as his grievances all seem to center on his dismissal."
A joint task force was established to continue the search for Dorner. The task force includes the Irvine Police Department, Riverside Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Marshall Service, Los Angeles Police Department and other allied agencies.
Los Angeles police deputies continued the manhunt at daybreak after relentless snowfall Friday evening forced them to suspend the search.
Los Angeles Police Chief William Braton, who was once the boss of Christopher Dorner, said Dorner is an "injustice collector" who finally reached a tipping point.
Bratton said it was clear to him that the triggering event in Dorner's life was his dismissal from the LAPD and said it was doubtful that he would give up and turn himself into police.
"He collects injustices and he never lets them go, and evidently they finally reached a tipping point that led to the series of violent acts the last several days," Bratton said. "The last thing that he would want would be to be arrested by the LAPD and do a perp walk. That would be the last injustice, the most significant one."
SWAT teams in camouflage began scouring the mountains Thursday after they found Dorner's burned-out Nissan near a ski resort in Big Bear Lake, about two hours from Los Angeles.
"It's extremely dangerous," San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon said at a news conference Friday, after more than 100 law enforcement officials scoured an 8-square-mile area using police dogs, snowmobiles and armored cars with chains to help navigate the terrain.
Sheriff's officials said the search would continue until Dorner was located or evidence was found indicating he was no longer in the Big Bear area, NBCLosAngeles.com reported.

With gun drawn, two California Highway Patrol officers check the cargo of a truck leaving the Big Bear Lake area during a manhunt for Christopher Dorner who is suspected of the killing three people.
Police said they believe Dorner was acting on an online manifesto in which he baited authorities.
"Any threat assessments you generate will be useless," it read. "I have the strength and benefits of being unpredictable, unconventional, and unforgiving."
McMahon acknowledged that the hunt for a man who is effectively hunting them could be nerve-wracking.
"This business is not always safe," he said. "But this is what we train for."
Meanwhile, an attorney for two women who were shot by police during the search for Dorner said that the women met Saturday with Beck, who apologized.
Emma Hernandez, 71, was with her daughter Margie Carranza, 47, delivering newspapers in Torrance early Thursday when police opened fire on their truck. Hernandez was hit twice in her back and Carranza was injured by flying glass.
Attorney Glen Jonas said that the family appreciated the apology. Police said Beck was making arrangements to replace the women's truck.

I am sorry but the LAPD has never been transparent. I had a cousin that worked as a LAPD cop for years and he refused to even acknowledge that he worked for them because of the problems they have being non-transparent, judgemental without cause. He just went in and did his job everyday and didnt say nothing. I think he was ashamed when he finally left them because of the good ole boy program that has existed with the LAPD. Take it from someone who knows
I would hazard a guess and say the fact that authorities have at least twice opened fire on innocent people with no warning (by all acounts save for those doing the shooting) with at least 3 other incidents now rumored on few sites, probably has more to do with the suspects hesitance to turn himself in than anything else, authorities have made it very clear they intend to murder this man, they do not want this to go to trial.
It may be a good idea to alert the authority on the both side of the border, either north or south, and alert other states. Follow up his financial condition, such as bank card or credit card, follow up his friends, and get a seach warrant to his home.
He may change his physical appearance, such as hair. However, his finance will be the important part to monitor.
If they are going to re investigate his allegations, then someone other than the LAPD should do it.
Finding him right now is more important than any investigation right now, for he is a very dangerous person.
Isn't it a bit too late to re-investigate the old case? This guy has already killed 3 people. Even if he would be exonerated (just from how he behaved all this time, my gut feeling is that there's a good chance that he would be if the re-investigation is legit), what good would it do for him? His future is already destroyed.
That's why it's hard to really tell who are the good guys and who are the bad ones. The NRA's idea of giving "good guys" more guns to fight "bad guys" is just plain crazy.

Regarding CF# 07-004281
...From 2/05 to 1/09 I saw some of the most vile things humans can inflict on others as a police officer in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, it wasn’t in the streets of LA. It was in the confounds of LAPD police stations and shops (cruisers). The enemy combatants in LA are not the citizens and suspects, it’s the police officers....
...Chief Beck, this is when you need to have that come to Jesus talk with Sgt. Teresa Evans and everyone else who was involved in the conspiracy to have me terminated for doing the right thing. you also need to speak with her attorney, Rico, and his conversation with the BOR members and her confession of guilt in kicking Mr. Gettler. I’ll be waiting for a PUBLIC response at a press conference. When the truth comes out, the killing stops....
...The attacks will stop when the department states the truth about my innocence, PUBLICLY!!! I will not accept any type of currency/goods in exchange for the attacks to stop, nor do i want it. I want my name back, period....
...Those of you who “go along to get along” have no backbone and destroy the foundation of courage. You are the enablers of those who are guilty of misconduct. You are just as guilty as those who break the code of ethics and oath you swore.
Citizens/non-combatants, do not render medical aid to downed officers/enemy combatants. They would not do the same for you. They will let you bleed out just so they can brag to other officers that they had a 187 caper the other day and can’t wait to accrue the overtime in future court subpoenas. As they always say, “that’s the paramedics job…not mine”. Let the balance of loss of life take place. Sometimes a reset needs to occur.
It is endless the amount of times per week officers arrest an individual, label him a suspect-arrestee-defendant and then before arraignment or trial realize that he is innocent based on evidence. You know what they say when they realize an innocent man just had his life turned upside down?. “I guess he should have stayed at home that day he was discovered walking down the street and matching the suspects description. Oh well, he appeared to be a dirtbag anyways”. Meanwhile the falsely accused is left to pick up his life, get a new, family, friends, and sense of self worth.
Don’t honor these fallen officers/dirtbags. When your family members die, they just see you as extra overtime at a crime scene and at a perimeter. Why would you value their lives when they clearly don’t value yours or your family members lives? I’ve heard many officers who state they see dead victims as ATV’s, Waverunners, RV’s and new clothes for their kids. Why would you shed a tear for them when they in return crack a smile for your loss because of the impending extra money they will receive in their next paycheck for sitting at your loved ones crime scene of 6 hours because of the overtime they will accrue. They take photos of your loved ones recently deceased bodies with their cellphones and play a game of who has the most graphic dead body of the night with officers from other divisions. This isn’t just the 20 something year old officers, this is the 50 year old officers with significant time on the job as well who participate....
...How do you know when a police officer is lying??? When he begins his sentence with, “based on my experience and training”....
...As you get older, you will see the evidence that your parent was a tyrant who loss their ethos and instead followed the path of moral corruptness. They conspired to hide and suppress the truth of misconduct on others behalf’s....

We back Rambo. We just dont have the guts to join him. Dorner speaks for alot of people, and not only LAPD but, he speaks against the entire legal system. From the deputies all the way to the attorneys it is one great big Kiss-Ass "Click".
Most citizens think the law is so perfect. Hopefully they'll question their local law.
I hope the law gets whats comin to them. If not from Dorner, from hell.
This morning (2/8/13) on radio the LA district attorny was commenting about Mr. Dorner. It was unbeleivable the words coming out of her mouth about he will be killed, he wont make it out, etc..etc..
She sounded so blood thirsty. I thought to myself is that how the law is? Arent they supposed to arrest him, or try to if able, and bring him before a court? The way she made it sound as if everyone wants him dead, and they wont give him a rightful arrest.
And then the way LA cops shoot at civilians. How does a trained police officer mistake a bald black man for two women? It shows me the police do not even take the time to identify their target, they just shoot at anyone. Poor policing just shows that Mr. Dorner may be telling some truths about the corrupt legal system.
What are they afraid of with looking into Mr Dorners allegations, and finding out if any truths? Unless it is true. I think the law is desperate to kill the guy so he cant speak in his defense to reveal the corruption in law enforcement.
Law enforcement want him dead not because he is a public threat but, because he is a threat to Law enforcement in exposing their corruptness. Mr. Dorner just wants his side heard, and then lets all be the judge after the facts are heard. Law Enforcement just wants him dead to shut him up. Mr. Dorner is no threat to the public as he said his targets are Law Enforcement. But, law enforcement will target anyone including the public. Yet the law wants you to believe he must be killed to protect the public.
Let him come in alive so we can hear his story. Otherwise, it is outright murder from law enforcement, and it is not justified.
Law enforcement is a standing army wanting all citizens dis-armed so they have un-opposed control of the people. Slavery.
The other thing is to follow up the suspect's mother's and sister's credit card or bank card, if they have any, and follow up the activities of the financial condition. The suspect must either have cash or bank cards to refill the gas tank of his car or to buy food or to pay lounging or other misc. costs.
He moe than likely burnt his pickup to throw them off more than likely had another auto mobile there for his get away he has every thing planed out so he would have more than one auto mobile
One news source quoted former LAPD chief Bratton saying the truck got stuck in the mud; maybe Dorner just had to go to Plan B and hoof it/steal a car or go to ground...
Most interesting posts here,a majority seem to bent on bashing the police and United States in general. If they are so afraid of the police 1) don't call on they when you are in trouble, 2) if in fact you believe this country is so bad/evil move to somewhere that you feel safer, 3) for all the scripture quotes, I did not see any reference to Mark 12:28-31, nor Mathew 7:1-5,just an over site I'm sure. The divisiveness within the United States is frightening to say the least, makes one believe more and more Presidents warning "a nation divided can not stand". Wonder how much longer we have?
Roger 2468: Excellent post. I would say that pretty much sums it up. I think there is a lot of criminals commenting here tonight that have an axe to grind with the LAPD. There is mistakes made and corruption within all professions. They all must think they are perfect or just obsessed with negative thoughts.
"LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said Saturday that the department would re-examine the details that led to Dorner's dismissal. Police spokesman Cmdr. Andrew Smith said the decision was made to ensure the public the LAPD is fair and transparent."
Aah, Charlie, just how stupid do you think "the public" is? Internal investigations of misconduct are not convincing in the least, but only increase the public's distrust. Your shoot first and ask questions later behavior convinces me that you have something to cover up. Obviously, you are willing to kill innocents to CYA. My bets are on Dorner. He knows how you will try to catch him and he now has nothing to lose in addition to his training and smarts. I won't be surprised if Dorner blows you away.
Well the guy has had 4 years to figure out how he was going to do all this.
He has training and a lot of information on how these other guys think and work.
They seem more scared of him by the look of things.
It looks like this guy is going to be taken down even if he was going too hand himself in.
He will most likely shoot himself or if he really knows what hes doing perhaps get another target he wants.
Time is ticking.........I wonder what this guy really knows in the way they are going off trying to shoot first asked questions later, seems like something might smell in this sudden revenge like story.
JMPO
I've read his full manifesto. Why didn't he find someone to help him with his case? Before going on the war path? He was not a perfect cop by any means. Claiming he had an accidental discharge makes him no better than those he condemns. If he was such a true blue by the book guy he would of resigned after the accidental discharge.
His rants points towards someone with a severe persecution complex, while many of his allegations are likely truthful, the rest of the manifesto is just plain crazy. The complete refusal to acknowledge his family is troubling. He gave more time to total strangers and irrelevant subject matter. How did his behavior and makeup fall through the cracks? I have a hard time believing his behavioral problems are just due to his lost of a job. I suspect beginning with the fact he mentions nothing of his father. He most likely had no male model in his early years. He grew up detached from reality. The world just does not operate the way he believes it does. How did the LAPD hire him to begin with? He does not fit their mold.
His truck broke in the Big Bear area. He left two AR15 style rifles in the Truck. Kinda doubt he was planning on breaking down. Most likely did not have the equipment or desire to go out in the country side during a snowstorm. I believe once the whether clears, they'll find his body. Either he'll of died from suicide or exposure. The reality is he killed two innocent people who had nothing to do with his manifesto other than being the daughter of the ex lapd lawyer representing him. Then he killed a cop by ambush. I suspect he has lost the wind in his sails. He fantasied about this for possibly years. The reality was he accomplished little. He is out of time, food, money and resources. Most likely being chewed on by coyotes, crows, rats and bugs as a corpse in the Big Bear area.
The LAPD has serious issues. The best thing would be to break it up. Time to breakup LA period. The City is too big to be governed competently by a City council made up of mostly brain dead wannabe politicians. The Mayors post is a soul sucking waste of money and effort.
My condolences to ALL the families effected by this mad mans rampage.
I would be hesitant to assume Dorner wrote a manifesto. Too many versions of it exist, and I would be shocked if the LAPD did not have a "discrediting machine" just waiting to be used.
If you don't trust the LAPD, and if that's a rational position, then it's not a rational position to assume what they tell you is true.
He may not have killed anyone. Personally, I would wait for evidence. Is the manifesto in his handwriting? Is it real ink? etc
Interesting observations. I hadn't heard there were rifles left in the truck; supports the idea that he didn't plan to get stuck in the mud and had to go to Plan B, lesser armed and probably not equipped for 20 degree weather. I agree they'll likely find him when the snow melts.
LiitleI56,
Judging by the way you are tearing Doner down it sounds like you have a bone to pick with him. Are you the female cop Doner accused of kicking the mentally disturbed man in the face while Doner was holding him down ? You disclosed your bias when you said Doner does not fit the mold of an LAPD officer. Did you really mean he was TOO committed to his conscience to be a LAPD cop ?
LiitleI56,
I agree with you that the LAPD, LA and entire state of California should be split up, there should not be one state populated enough to represent the eighth largest economy in the world.
While I know we most likely will never know the whole truth behind Doner's firing and being dismissed by the Navy reserve, nothing will justify him killing people.
At this point, this guy does not need to commit another violent act. All he has to do is hide out somewhere and every so often release a video or a "communique"...and yet another "high alert" will follow. It worked for Osama bin Laden for years.
I do not in any way condone this man's actions, but if they lead to light being shed on the long tradition of a corrupt LAPD....perhaps something good will come of it.
If all this chaos leads to reducing the rampant police brutality of the LAPD, it WILL be
worth lives; even innocent lives. How many innocent people get beaten to death, or
framed and wrongly incarcerated and raped in prison, or forced to accept plea deals because
of LAPD corruption.
Finally someone with all the answers! I can't believe how many people don't respect law enforcement officers. They represent your community.
You obviously don't know the LAPD. I wouldn't want that Department to represent the city any more than the cholos/gangsters. A real embarrassment they have been for a police dept.
Thanks for the analysis, LiitleI56. But my guess is Dorner is a lot smarter than you figure. I'm thinking he has split SoCal and going to hole up out of reach somewhere (a Reno casino?) and then return for more revenge murders when they relax a bit back in L.A. I think of Arnie's, "I'll be back."
Hey Takenaka. I respect cops cause they have to deal with the public and we are a bunch of a**holes. But then cops are people, too, which means they are a bunch of a**holes as well. Like people in general, some are better than others. To put any authority figure on a pedestal means someone is going to topple the statue.
Now we see why the 2ND Amendment is so crucial, the right to bear arms to protect oneself from bad guys and rouge cops. Cops can't be everywhere so there are times when one must protect his family and property.
This sounds like a thing from a movie.
Like they say "enemies domestic and foreign"
What is up with the LAPD? Sounds like a bunch of corrupt scared police from some of the comments I have read and news articles everywhere on the internet.
They truly are corrupt, that is for sure, if you don't think so it's because you don't know them or are lying through your teeth.
Big Bear lake is nowhere near the jurisdiction of the LAPD, so why are they even a part of the search, to make sure Doner is not captured alive ?.....We really need to hear Doner's side of the story which has been suppressed up until now.
I have been falsely accused and it is the most helpless and horrible feeling in the world. You can't do anything about it and it can eat away at you. I think this would be especially hard for a guy and particularly someone in law enforcement or the military. Add that to his mental state back then and now and there is a tragedy waiting to happen, and in this case it did. It is unfortunate that the LAPD just now decides to reopen this guy's case and look at it again. it should be done by someone outside of the LAPD, even outside of California. I actually believe the guy's claims about the perp's co-cop kicking someone in the head. And I hope the two women who were shot sue the heck out of the LAPD and anyone else they can think of in California. That was the worse example of bad policing I have heard about in some time. Total loss of control.
One former officer had to go to this degree to make people really LOOK at the corruption of the LAPD. Sad, just SAD! Blue line, curtain, cloak, door.....the corruption needs to stop so the GOOD cops don't keep getting hung out to dry and lose their lives and minds....
Dorner has already won.
1 - Millions of dollars in lawsuits from injured citizens at the hands of incompetent policemen
2 - Millions of dollars in overtime pay looking for a suspect who has already fled the State.
3 - Time and money lost in manpower, fuel and equipment usage, and resources
4 - Time reinvestigating the case which will disclose wrongdoing by the LAPD. Hint. whistle blowers aren't supposed to be retaliated against.
5 - Money spent protecting people on the hit list.
6- And if this goes to trial, millions of tax payers' dollars.
7- A police force scared -s h i t l e s s-
Something's wrong.
Policemen aren't supposed to -p i s s- on themselves when threatened, scared so -s h i t l e s s- that they shoot innocent people.
This just doesn't happen in the movies. Where is Clint Eastwood when you need him?
Hmmm...
Possibly at home.. talking to an empty chair...
A better question "where was Obama during Benghazi?". Obviously in that empty chair. Go get your scissors, there's no good ending here. Once this "monkey Rambo" is killed and The Amateur King's whereabouts on 9-11-12 become known, there will be racial riots. Only this time, it might not be confined to LA.
L.A. P.D. has already mistakenly shot a 71 year old lady and her daughter in their reckless search for Dorner.
The Feds need to remove the L.A. P.D. from this case and take over. They are too emotionally involved to act responsibly and need to stand down. This prior service Military officer needs to be brought in peacefully before more people get needlessly killed. I strongly feel that there is more to this story then the L.A. P.D. is telling everyone. He should have his day in court. If he is guilty, hammer him, if not take the appropriate action.
The Feds? I'd trust Andy Taylor over Holder's Gangster Squad any day.
Anybody but the L.A. P.D. is the point. They just shot a 71 year old lady and her daughter in their zeal to kill this guy for goodness sakes. What If that was your Mom?
They are too ginned up and need to be removed from this case.
If you want a measure of just how useless US police forces are, do a
Google search for "UNTESTED RAPE KITS". The pursuit of criminals with real
victims such as rapists has been largely abandoned.
The only crimes our police really take seriously are drugs and traffic.
It is pointless to call the police if you are an actual victim.
The War-on-Drugs is the main cause of this.
this guy is crazy, but i believe what set him over the edge years ago is worth investigating.
Dorner is NOT crazy. His condition is referred to as righteous anger.
There's nothing righteous about going back to your place of employment and killing your former colleagues and their children. Such a disproportionate response is a sign of mental illness.
Madone:
The "collegues" he shot were sociopaths and we do not know the reasons he shot his colleagues family.
For all we know they might have been as "deserving" as his other victims.
I have far more sympathy for those who routinely die from LAPD street justice brutality than the families
of vicious thugs who should know they are potential targets from the numerous victims of such brutality.
This society has a habit of chewing people up and just spitting them into the gutter. If the LAPD did this to Dorner, they need to clean house. He may be going about it all wrong but there may be a valid point behind it. Creating an enemy with nothing to lose is a seriously stupid act. Bullying never stops until the bully gets hurt. He is asking for the truth and if he was brutalized by the system, he might just stop if it was to come out. Wouldn't that be easier and safer? Whether totally by mental illness or partially because of the system, he got kicked to the curb in a way that has set him off and that is at least partly the fault of an uncaring system. You reap what you sow.
If you back a dog into a corner it will fight back. It's not just police. This kind of crap happens in work places every day and it just keeps getting worse. You push people to the breaking point and this kind of crap happens, especially when they lose their livelihood and their name is smeared beyond repair.
Remember, these are Officers turning against each other when it sounds like this guy who just happens to be a prior service Military Officer Commissioned by Congress tried to stand up for one of his own, his career was wrecked. This is what he was trained to do, stand up for his fellow officers when he sees a wrong being committed.
Dorner is NOT mentally ill. His condition is referred to as righteous anger.
There's nothing righteous about going back to your place of employment and killing your former colleagues and their children. Such a disproportionate response is a sign of mental illness.
I consider it righteous when corruption is systemic. You must cut out a cancer.
