The search for Christopher Dorner, the ex-LAPD officer accused in a string of revenge murders entered its third day Saturday, authorities said, exactly four years after his dismissal from the LAPD. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.
Updated at 8:42 p.m. ET: The search for Christopher Dorner, the ex-LAPD officer accused in a string of revenge murders entered its third day Saturday in the snowy mountains of San Bernardino, Calif., authorities said, exactly four years after his dismissal from the LAPD.
Police say they believe Dorner is on a mission to execute former LAPD colleagues and superiors and their families to avenge his 2009 firing. They believe he murdered a retired captain’s daughter and her fiancé in Irvine, Calif., on Sunday, then killed one cop and wounded two others in shootings Thursday.
In an interview with San Francisco's KCBS, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said Saturday that the department would re-examine the details that led to Dorner's dismissal.
Police spokesman Cmdr. Andrew Smith said the decision was made to ensure the public the LAPD is "fair and transparent" on Dorner's firing.
Dorner accused his training officer in August 2007 of kicking a mentally ill man during an arrest in San Pedro. An internal affairs investigation into his accusations concluded that the training officer had not kicked the mentally ill man and that Dorner's statements were false. He was later notified that he would be fired for making false statements.
Dorner's former boss and L.A. police chief from 2002 to 2009, William Bratton, said earlier that Saturday marked an important date in Dorner's history.
"Four years ago he received his discharge papers, if you will, his dismissal papers on Feb. 9, 2009," Bratton said. "A day of significance certainly in his mind that inasmuch as his grievances all seem to center on his dismissal."
A joint task force was established to continue the search for Dorner. The task force includes the Irvine Police Department, Riverside Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Marshall Service, Los Angeles Police Department and other allied agencies.
Los Angeles police deputies continued the manhunt at daybreak after relentless snowfall Friday evening forced them to suspend the search.
Los Angeles Police Chief William Braton, who was once the boss of Christopher Dorner, said Dorner is an "injustice collector" who finally reached a tipping point.
Bratton said it was clear to him that the triggering event in Dorner's life was his dismissal from the LAPD and said it was doubtful that he would give up and turn himself into police.
"He collects injustices and he never lets them go, and evidently they finally reached a tipping point that led to the series of violent acts the last several days," Bratton said. "The last thing that he would want would be to be arrested by the LAPD and do a perp walk. That would be the last injustice, the most significant one."
SWAT teams in camouflage began scouring the mountains Thursday after they found Dorner's burned-out Nissan near a ski resort in Big Bear Lake, about two hours from Los Angeles.
"It's extremely dangerous," San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon said at a news conference Friday, after more than 100 law enforcement officials scoured an 8-square-mile area using police dogs, snowmobiles and armored cars with chains to help navigate the terrain.
Sheriff's officials said the search would continue until Dorner was located or evidence was found indicating he was no longer in the Big Bear area, NBCLosAngeles.com reported.

With gun drawn, two California Highway Patrol officers check the cargo of a truck leaving the Big Bear Lake area during a manhunt for Christopher Dorner who is suspected of the killing three people.
Police said they believe Dorner was acting on an online manifesto in which he baited authorities.
"Any threat assessments you generate will be useless," it read. "I have the strength and benefits of being unpredictable, unconventional, and unforgiving."
McMahon acknowledged that the hunt for a man who is effectively hunting them could be nerve-wracking.
"This business is not always safe," he said. "But this is what we train for."
Meanwhile, an attorney for two women who were shot by police during the search for Dorner said that the women met Saturday with Beck, who apologized.
Emma Hernandez, 71, was with her daughter Margie Carranza, 47, delivering newspapers in Torrance early Thursday when police opened fire on their truck. Hernandez was hit twice in her back and Carranza was injured by flying glass.
Attorney Glen Jonas said that the family appreciated the apology. Police said Beck was making arrangements to replace the women's truck.

We actually had a light dusting of snow here in the desert by Tucson this morning.
FruVegge, I used to live in tucson, an herpa st. and then moved to another location which I don't remember, I know live in, IL.
fruVegge, why is it sad that he is watching tv and the news about all of this.
All the mistakes being made is probably one of the things he's trying to prove.
I mean that cop is paranoid, he is driving a pick up truck not a truck. And that cop has watched to many movies, he needs a vacacion, a long vacation before he shoots an innocent bystandard and furthermore it show he is an unresponsible gun owner, I think he should take lessons on the proper methods of utilizing the hand gun. Droner did say, he is after the people behind his firing, not every person in conus.
What they should do is put the families of the officers on the list in a safe place or at least offer it to them until they catch or kill Mr. Dorner. The downfall to that is it may be awhile.
LA cops are as dirty as they come. If they have nothing to hide, why are they opening fire on a truck that resembles his without asking questions? This man is dangerous, but I think the boys in blue from LA are more dangerous. Killing family members is disguting, and show he is desperate, but I don't think any of us will EVER know the truth behind his actions. I believe the LAPD doesn't want him found alive. Reminds me of the movie "The Gauntlet". Everyone out to get someone the media has deemed evil, but Dormer is most likely much less evil than the cops who are trying to silence him.
That's basically my take on this. People who blindly believe law enforcement agencies have our best interests at heart are incredibly naive and living in a dream world. The good people in these agencies are the exception to the rule, and even then peer pressure keeps them in line with the rest.
tsup8, do you honestly think that someone who murders, in cold blood, three innocent people is the GOOD GUY?!?! There is nothing they could possibly have done to him to justify murdering three innocent people to make a point. Although I don't think it is admirable to shoot the wrong vehicle, what the police are doing is trying to prevent the cold blooded murder of additional innocent people whose only 'crime' is being related to someone. For that matter, two of the three murder victims to date were not even related. One was a police officer who was trying to prevent the murder of a family member, and another was the fiance of the daughter of the guy's lawyer. He hadn't even actually married into the family yet. So how unrelated does a person have to get to not be on this guy's hit list?
oh, i so agree with you. it is like the gauntlet! as i said earlier he makes some valid points in his manifesto.
killing innocent ppl to keep innocent ppl from being killed, what a quandary, i think this guy is dangerous and really needs to be caught quickly, b4 he can harm anyone else, but in his mind the police force have already killed everyone and everything he holds dear. I think they got rid of him to keep a lawsuit away, and to protect one of thier own (another rotten cop) but i guess this time they picked the wrong guy , a major time bomb, to mess with.
Hopefully he dies before trial.
But we NEED cops. Who else would hand out speeding tickets to honest, hard-working citizens?!
What would we do without them to protect us from ourselves?
Do you honestly want anarchy? I don't think it would be a very pretty picture. What we have now is not perfect, but anarchy would be a bloodbath. People rant and rave about the police, and I don't like getting a ticket anymore than the next person does, but I'm sure glad the police are there. You might try imagining what this country would be like with no law enforcement, and then I think you might be singing a slightly different tune. Unless, of course, you are one of the thugs. Then you might like not having law enforcement curtailing your activities.
Anarchy is a bit of a stretch Heather, don't you think?
As long as they are going after those thugs and not ticketing innocent civilians I am fine with the police. It's the pretense that they give out tickets for our "safety" that bugs me, they arbitrarily give out tickets as an extra way to tax the people, not to protect them. If there weren't so many BS things that the police can legally do which harm the people they are supposedly protecting, I wouldn't have a problem with them. People are naive to think our law enforcement officials are totally benign. I acknowledge that it is the legislative branch of our government that makes these laws, but "I was just following orders" is never an acceptable excuse. What's right is not always legal and what's legal is not always right. The police are more malignant than they are benevolent. Many of the practices the police adhere to, end up creating the thugs that are then let out on the street to go after law abiding citizens like you (I assume) and I.
Ticket , shmicket, they do a lot worse than that, what's really ironic here is that the cops creed is that a man in blue can't go against the men in blue even if all those men are wrong, so he goes nuts and does the one thing he's accused them of doing, he does wrong!
Too bad they don't go through all this when a regular citizen is murdered. They wonder why people think they're selfish scum...
"Regular citizens" were murdered. Two of them. A young, engaged couple, who had the misfortune to be the daughter and future son-in-law of the fellow who had the misfortune of defending the murderer four years earlier. The dead officer was killed while trying to prevent the murder or additional "regular citizens". The cops are all over this case because there are many, many lives on the line, most of them "regular citizens" related to people in the killer's past. The police are risking their lives trying to stop a murderous thug from killing additional "regular citizens". I think they deserve more credit and respect than I'm seeing on most comments.
I don't want anarchy, Heather, unless it's in the police force and courts, then a major weeding out would be nice, you know to where most ppl aren't afraid to call the police or as afraid of the police as they are the criminals. I've seen bad cops first hand and as soon as i asked for the superiors name, days after i was followed down a road all the way outside the city limits and they drove back and forth in front of my home, needless to say i never called thier superior, i just let the whole thing drop. I don't have much time left on this earth and i know this, but now i wished i hadn't been such a chicken. No, we need the police, we just don't need criminals for police!
SOUTH?,I would have guessed NORTH,like Canada.
Imagine if this guy swore to kill civilians, shouldn't people have the right to defend themselves as much as the police? Look at the firepower the police have, are they limited to ten rounds?
Don't worry, you should be able to take this guy out with a musket like the founders used! Hahahah
Stupid liberal anti gun morons!
Too much truth in your post.
10 rounds times 100 determined civilians = 1,000 rounds !!
Who said I wasn't listening in math class . . .
Anyone who is anti-gun is a moron, and it probably isn't just liberals.
Tis better to have one and not need it, than to need one and not have it.
I was always againsts that invisibleswordsman, that is why I would not be allowed to be a cop because I would contradict their ideals. If you don't fit in with their ideals you would be out of the group, don't get me wrong, groups are good if they have the right intention but if they have the wrong intention look out its a masacre and this is incident is a good example of it.
I SAY WE HAVE A Christopher Dorner day . . . call it open season for anyone with a gun, guts, and determination to catch this killer.
Support Your Local Police . . . Vigilantes Unite . . . lets PROUDLY display those new AR15'S join the police in the man hunt for the killer !!
We can't help. Thanks to the police advice to Biden, we've all had to hide our weapons from the coming confiscations. These pigs are on their own.
If you don't want to get shot by the police just stand behind the perp.
Guns don't kill people only cops do. Lol!
what a interesting story. Another example of how truth is so unclear in this country.
With the media today serving their corporate masters, we never quite get the whole (or even partial) truth about anything. If possible, you have to do investigative reporting on your own.
This guy really touts himself in this manifesto.
Pride goeth before a fall.
Looks like the police might be a little scared of this guy!
"The problem with the situation is it looked like the police had the goal of administering street justice and in so doing, didn't take the time to notice that these two older, small Latina women don't look like a large black man," Jonas said.
Dorner is black, 6 feet tall and weighs 270 pounds.
First of all I have no love for lawyers. Most are parasites lodging trivial lawsuits in pursuit of immense payouts such as the Subway debacle. This given. it is my sincere desire that the two women that were shot without any warning or provocation get the meanest, greedist lawer that ever lived and that they totally bankrupt Los Angeles.
The police that made the bad shoot should be imprisoned for reckless endangerment with the intent to do bodily harm and be placed in cells with Bubba and his ilk. They have no more place in society than drug dealers or serial killers.
I saw that they found the subject vehicle burned out. At least the informed members of the constabulary may not be shooting at every blue mid sized pickup on the roadway, but have pity on anyone driving one that encounters a member of the police that hasn't gotten the word. Also, a word of caution to any recovery truck driver, be careful when hauling any burned out vehicle. You may be a target.
Clearly the police made a mistake shooting those women, but by reading the comments about how they are dirty, I have one question: If you were being hunted down by a well trained psycho, or your family members were, how many of you would wait for him to make the first shot? My guess is not many.
Also those women I believe had a truck that was very similar to his, and had their lights off at night. Not very smart.
yep they were probably warming thier truck up so no need to turn the lights on yet, and damned fools had the stupidity and nerve of having a truck that looks like a mass murderer, so hell lets blow them up!
Too bad you can't prove that. But I love the assumptions, because that was what the police were going off of as well. Resulted in a fail for everyone.
yeah, but everyone loses , when cops just go off on an ASSumtion. They're supposed to be trained better than that.
Why don't all you gun freaks just have a big shoot out and get it over with. You freaks are so fearful about your guns and bullets you sleep with them at night. Just let Glenn Beck, Rush and Fox News continue to eat your minds.
Why don't you anti gun freaks move to a country that doesn't have a 2nd amendment! Then we all can be happy!
If you want to have a shoot out why don't you go find this guy and throw some tofu at him!
A lot of truth in your words MEDIA CHECK as there will one day be a shoot out as the Patriots of this nation will take it to the streets . . . what do you plan to do on that day???
I don't own a gun, but I would like to be a gun owner one day, and when I do I will be a responsible owner. That is if the anti-gun folks haven't thrown away all of our rights by then in the name of "security".
People are naive if they think the police will always be there to protect them. This pleasant civilized society is on a collision course with reality when we run out of resources, it will not be pretty when that happens and we'll see just how civilized we really are. God help us when that time comes.
Because all of us 'gunfreaks' as you call us are good people that don't want to harm innocent ppl, we just don't want to be killed in our homes or our sleep! Watch the I.D. channel and see how many young ,and old, good ppl have died at the hands of a monster, and that gun may be the only hope they have. It might be sad that this world has come to this but it has. I live in a small town and when i was a kid , no one locked the doors , there was no need, now we lock our doors and if the dog outside barks we grab our gun and make sure if there is a person outside wishing us harm, we pray they see the gun and get the hell away, because most of us don't want to hurt anyone if we can avoid it.
hey Dorner ,after you finish cleaning up the LAPD pigsty of dirty cops ,come to NY and clean up the NYPD ,william Braton left it ripe full of corrupt cops & political cronies too when he was comish over there too , don't kill the innocent victims though ,leave that for the dirty cops ! just cap them
Wow, the technical term what you two represent is freedom fighters, right?
JJ-289110
No, that would be ignorance fighters!
I agree with esmithers, for all those thousands of examples of bravery thier's thousand of examples of crooked cops too, i think they should be more than just fired, they should do jail time. thousand of regular people show feats of bravery every day, but let one civilian shoot innocent ppl because they were in a vehicle that looked like one belonging to a person chasing them or trying to kill them and they would be locked up faster than you can say freeze!
sorry, wrong person.
I had to pull myself away from the story being told. Does this guy have stuff on other cops and they want to get rid of him so he can't tell his story? What led up to this behavior. Then I was falling for the fact that various people have been murdered and did anyone see this man shoot them? They keep reporting things like these are facts when in fact they are assumptions and should be stated that way. The fact that those women were shot without asking them to surrender tells me that justice is not longer served in the country if you piss someone off, so who is the one that has to follow rules anymore? Why do you think cops and soldiers keep turning rogue? There's something gut wrong with our country and the people running it. They all need to find Jesus and that is a plain simple fact. Our military and police are being trained to shoot to kill regardless if you are an innocent bystander or not. You can't even pick sides anymore with this kind of behavior.
Confusion ~ Distraction ~ repeat over n over ~
Now Charlie Sheen is in the act! Who else that would fit the perfect part in attempts to lure a physco to "Have a talk to figure this thing out" lol!
Ya never know! he might just call! but it ain't gonna be about figuring things out! He'll probably ask charlie for some survival items like : a hot chic to warm him, a get away car, some coke to keep him going, etc, etc.
We'll wait n see,
Run Forest Run! to where??? not many places I can think of... Can you?????? Bing~Bang~Boom!
We are missing the point here. Does anyone REALLY think a manhunt of this size would be happening if he just killed some old lady, or robbed a store? HECK NO! He killed a cop, and a cops family so all of a sudden one of the largest manhunts is on!
Give me a break, our police force is a joke, and all they care about is themselves. I'm not condoning what this guy is doing, but if you think he's a "madman" you're sadly mistaken too. I believe him, i believe this highly decorated military man and officer gave up his partner for being excessivly violent. I also believe that because he did that he was removed from the force.
Let's look back at the gangster days. Gangsters had a lot of power, but it was police that were on the take that allowed them to continue. Who really polices the police? Our government? HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAH Obama has the unions so far up his rear he doesn't have time to worry about anything else other then to how to get himself more power.
Our government is corrupt, our police that protect and serve only do so when its in their interest, and our heads up state are run by unions (understand i'm speaking in generalizations and it does not apply to all).
Again, I don't condone what he is doing and I hope that somehow he changes his heart and turns himself in, but I do understand that a person of this personality type would feel so desparate and think there is nothing else to do.
Please turn yourself in, and to the press I hope there's at least one person out there that truly investigates what he is saying and digs deep enough to find the truth. This will probably happen after he dies, but I hope it at least happens.
I mostly agree with what you're saying here. This won't end well at all, and I seriously doubt that the authorities will ever do an investigation, they will continue to demonize this guy and sweep all of the indiscretions of the LA police department under the rug. I don't condone the civilian deaths, but I can't say I think this ex-cop is the big bad guy here. When given no recourse the only thing for this guy to do is to do something irrational, I just hope no more innocent people are hurt in the process.
Unfortunatlyf for them, the police have picked a fight with a formidable character. Maybe they should be looking in Tora Bora. I do not condone killing innocents, but police dont fall into that category.I sincerrily hope the boys in blue take a lesson from this. Next we are gonna here he used an assault rifle.
If you cannot do the job alone; do what you need to due with literally the Calvary.
That man needs to be found yesterday.
Your state is scaring the **** out of me. Let us hope he doesn't have a numeric count of how authority related individuals he will kill and then proceed East.
