Porn star teaches sex seminar at the University of Illinois

A University of Illinois residence hall reportedly brought in a former porn star to educate student residents in a week-long sex education seminar.

The program, which began Feb. 3, featured former porn star Annie Sprinkle and ended Thursday with an "orgasm workshop," according to a blog post by campusreform.org.

The program, hosted by resident community Unit One, included speeches by Sprinkle about life as a porn star, a presentation on "Eco-sexology," a free sidewalk sex Clinic, and a screening of "Annie Sprinkle's Amazing World of Orgasm."

The week reportedly involved hands-on, but not nude, participation from University of Illinois students and was funded with student fees paid by residents of the community, the blog reported.

Sprinkle, an internationally known artist, visits colleges around the country to teach sex education and her work is frequently used in educational programs and equal rights campaigns.

This seminar is not the first time she has presented at the university, as she spoke at the school nearly two years ago. But as she expanded her sex talks to the campus' Allen Hall at the end of the week, community members and students had mixed reactions to the racy films and clips, the Daily Illini reported.

gbgentleman, student fee charges were included in my tuition. They had to be paid regardless of my participation in any social activities on campus. So Yankee Boy might be right. When our tuition increased, I noticed an upcharge in the mandatory student fees. Bummer.

Yeah, tuition and student fees might have increased, but I think what gbgentleman was trying to point out was that hiring her was not a major reason for the increase. Tuition increases every year at most major universities.

" The world, it is a changin' " When I was at University, my primary focus was on finding innovative ways to avoid detection so that I could smuggle extra tacos and sandwiches from the dining hall back to my dorm room (for those late night study session 'munchies').

I can't help but wonder how a week-long sex seminar, conducted in my dorm by "Little Oral Annie" herself, might have modified my habitually tenuous and distracted study habits, and made me a much more focused and attentive student?

Tuition would have gone up regardless if they would have hired this person or not. Besides, just because you pay tuition, doesn't mean you get to dictate the content of the courses. When I was in college there were plenty of courses that I thought were not worth being taught or that I disagreed with, but that didn't mean that I had a legitimate gripe about my tuition and student service fees. I have no problem with this course being taught on a college campus as part of this particular curriculum.

The only bad word in any American school is "Jesus."

It is a public university open to people of all faiths and religions. Why should Jesus be taught?

You have your religion. Others have theirs. There is no reason to subject other people to a religion or deity in which they do not believe in. It is beyond my understanding why some Christians always try to do just that.

Cant blame them, the Judeo Christian History was a big part of our history of our fathers who came here. There was no muslims, hindu, bhudda discussions.. Christian God was our focus, and we looked up to him as our stepping stone, our absolute authority on morality. Take that away and now you get a huge diverse society who is in constant clashing with one another, and this whole political correctness garbage. No wonder america is falling apart. Now look at this trash were teaching in shcools.. Porn star classes ? Society is really degrading.

@Gbgentleman:

That may be so, but it doesn't say that just students who were attending were paying.

And it's hosted by reslife, which is generally supported in part by tuition.

Too true Marmaduke. If this was something not funded by mandatory fees then why would it be our concern? Those students own their own bodies, and so if they want to pay out of their own pocket to attend a sex seminar they should be free to do so. They should not be regaled for uplifting our culture though.

I think this is just one more sign, among literally millions of other signs, that our society continues to degrade and devolve, where licentiousness replaces liberty, and the freedom to figuratively pee in the community punchbowl is now seen as a high form of citizenship. If by college age these students aren't already aware of how to put on a condom, or how to give or get fellatio, then wouldn't it make more sense for the people who support this garbage to go and find their previous elementary and secondary school teachers who've failed in that task and, well, pecker slap them?

Liberal arts education is anything but.

Did you read the article? This. Is. Not. A. Class! It is a week-long seminar on sex-education! You know what a seminar is right? [Seminar: "any group or meeting for holding discussions or exchanging information" freedictionary.com]

Society is really degrading.

Really? So a seminar in sex-education is the mark of a degrading society? What about a seminar in yoga? or healthy lifestyles seminar? Are those the signs of a degrading society too?

Christian God was our focus

Why don't you go back in time and tell that to the slaves, women and native Americans.

The Company.....Actually Timothy1Mil makes a very valid point. We can't teach religion as an alternative way of living but we can certainly teachabout all the things that religion may dis-approve of or disagree with. Schools to day actually teach gay lifestyle as OK and "normal" when in the eyes of anyone who truely lives a christian lifestyle for example disagrees. I undrstand our President and vice President have both made pro gay comments. They are either lying to us , lying to themselves or lying to the church when they go there.

For our schools, high schools and colleges to teach these alternatives but not teach religion as one of those alternative is wrong. I am not saying we should have bible study classes or prayer time but calsses that teach what the majority still beleives and that is the christian lifestyle. We can teach pornography and homosexuality and evolutionism and other ways of thinking but we can't teach that many people have a faith based lifestyle too.

I have no problem with schools teaching about Jesus as long as it is under a fictional use similar to Peter Pan or the Easter Bunny. The bible has never been confirmed to be fact so therefor it is fiction. If you want to have a seminar on the bible in this context, then by all means go ahead, but don't tell me to teach it to my children as a fact based literature. I alone decide what fiction I want my children to believe in until they are old enough to make their own decisions.

but calsses that teach what the majority still beleives and that is the christian lifestyle.

Why? Why should I or anyone be "forced" to learn about the christian lifestyle just because the majority believes it?

Go to a parochial school if you want to learn about christian lifestyle. It is not the job of teachers to teach students what faith is acceptable.

Christians always complain about people forcing their lifestyle on them. But look at your post. Look at what you are advocating. You want to force people, who may not believe in your faith, to learn about it. To accept it. Sounds awfully lot like a religion in the middle east, doesn't it.

Schools to day actually teach gay lifestyle as OK and "normal"

It is not a schools job to teach morality, or what lifestyle is right or wrong. If you think being gay is immoral, fine. Not everyone agrees. Schools do not promote any lifestyle. They treat all students equally, gay or straight. As they should.

To prohibit this part of our history is public schools is wrong. In fact we should teach a class of religion which reaches out to ALL forms of recognized religion and atheism. The problem with that of course in your view is most if not all would not condone homosexuality except the athiest and therefore not be good for the gay movement. If we are to teach our children to be open minded then we must give them all sides of an issue not simply the liberal view.

I thought I was very clear. The bible is listed in the fiction section of the library for a reason and yes I compared Jesus to a Peter pan, because Peter Pan had fictional powers too. Should I have used Santa Clause, because evidently he was a real person at one time too that later was bestowed with mystical powers.

The left-wing academia pigs are suppose to teach the future generations of this twisted nation how to be productive and responsible in society. Not how to have freakin' orgies. So get you damn head out of the toilet for once! Everyone of these idiots who approved of this sick class should be fired, tenure or no tenure. If this was a public university and my kid attended that class, it would be the last day at that university. This is what good old fashion values has been taught to our children by the most liberal and sickess f$#ks in education. A damn class on porno, you got to be freaking kidding!

      #1.42 - Mon Feb 11, 2013 3:50 AM EST

These "children" you're referring to are ADULTS. They are deemed, by society, old enough to make their own decisions. Therefore it's the CHOICE of the INDIVIDUAL to attend such a seminar. This is not a mandatory activity and a degree isn't dependant on having attended any seminar. What I find sad is that you'd deprive your "child" of an education for attending something so inconsequential as this. I hope your child/children don't ever find out that they were a product of *gasp* intercourse!

What I find pathetic is that you would see this crap as acceptable for them to learn! What you would call "education" is a freaking joke. And I do not give a damn if it is a seminar or not. This is how we produce the "You owe me" generation, by teaching degenerate useless crap to kids, 18 yrs old and up! How about encouraging them to attend a seminar that will teach them to be a better or more productive person, such as an innovator or leader in the field of engineering or sciences, instead of learning sex from a slut who prostituted herself as means to give head in life [sic] and not get a head in life?

You go from porno to gayness to describe morality in a classroom.

I suggest you re-read my posts. Preferably with a dictionary in hand because you clearly have no idea what I was getting at. I never claimed that porn should be used to teach morality. How dare you accuse me of such. My point is that morality should not be taught. Your morality, my morality, the neighbor down the streets morality are all different by various degrees.

In order to teach morality, You have to set a precedent-which morality is right? Is yours? Is mine? There is no way to know. I don't want my kids learning your morality, because frankly, I think yours is wrong. And you think mine is wrong. See the issue here?

          #1.45 - Tue Feb 12, 2013 12:12 AM EST

Nature tells us that being gay is wrong. If everyone "chose to be gay the human race would be gone . Not is 200 years or 2000 but in less than 100 years man would be extinct. Just the facts. We have to reproduce to survive plain and simple. The truth is called hate by those who won't see the truth but it still remains the truth. I am not taling morality. I have never suggested that gays are bad people. But I will always stand on my positon that the gay lifestyle is not in our best intrest as a race or as a country.

I suggested an experiment a while back and got no reponse. I suggested we confine 100 straight couples so they can not gather with anyone other than each other and thier children. We do the same with 100 gay couples. In 80 years we tally the results. If ANY offspring are produced by a gay couple I will conceed . I believe that the gay group will be long since gone since they have a 20 year shorter life expectancy.

If everyone "chose to be gay the human race would be gone

Wow. You truly do not understand.

People do not choose to be gay. That's not how it works. Your sexual preference is not a choice. How is that not common knowledge by now?

There is compelling research that shows that being gay is a genetic anomaly that occurs. Do you choose to have cancer? Of course not. But genetic defects will cause it to happen. Same thing with homosexuality.

Nature tells us that being gay is wrong.

Nature does not tell us anything. Homosexuality regularly occurs in nature. There are animals that are homosexual.

We have to reproduce to survive

There are couples that choose not have kids. There are couples that can't have kids. Does this make their marriage immoral as well? What's the difference between an infertile couple and a gay couple? The idea that marriage is about producing offspring is an ancient way of thinking. The human race is over-populated anyway. Marriage should be about a couple sharing their happiness.

sillyshrinks, This woman doesn't know her a$$ from a hole in the ground, otherwise she wouldn't treat it as such for the world to see! I agree with you totally, what they ought to teach these kids is a course on "Credit"! How to play the game called reality with a bank, and what would be the repercussions. Borrowing more than you can pay back,or if it sounds to good to be true, you better believe it is! The common sense things the fortunate kids heard from their parents and now from their Professor's if they didn't. So they do not blame the Bank for their top heavy mortgages and a trip to bankruptcy court. Teach them common sense so they don't have to find out the hard way. Like the kids at other University's who are already finding out about sex in the dorm's and Frat Houses of America! What would be more important? A class to give your child financial freedom or how to properly get yourself off from a whore?

              To both of the above:

sillyshrinks: Do you take yourself seriously? Because I can't. Work on your spelling, grammar, using full sentences, etc, read the rest of this comment (if you can), and then, if you can actually come up with a well-educated response, as opposed to what you spat out above, try again.

fenderbluesjr: It is those who are not sexually educated that often end up with the unexpected pregnancies, and judging by their said lack of education, despite the abundance of educational resources in our world today, they will most likely play the system and suck out as many of our tax dollars as they can to support their iPhones and other ridiculously unnecessary goods. So, either pay for the education (which you, as well, really need to invest in), or pay for someone else's lack of responsibility. Your call.

But personally, I am sick and tired of seeing parents in the checkout line, baby in arm, iPhone in hand, and Bluetooth in ear, paying with food stamps. That's OUR hard-earned money that SHOULD be helping those who really need it, and helping me get through college so I can go out and make a difference in the world. But no, you're right. We should be content with uneducated being sexually uninformed and instead let our tax dollars pay for their ridiculous lifestyle afterward.

I do attend the University of Illinois (Computer Science (yeah, the Engineering kind)), and Annie also visited one of our gen-ed classes during her stay to give a guest lecture. Her story was actually incredibly interesting, and the fact that she has lived her entire life doing what she wants to do, regardless of what the uneducated part of our society might think or say, is something that we can all learn from.

              Read a book.

cvm23: I totally agree with you on people with babies in their arms, paying for groceries with food stamps and I'd also add in line at welfare offices seeking aid, and next thing you know they have iphones, ipads, and even better they drive a nearly new car. I just have to wonder where does that money come from? I am a Democrat but I sure don't approve of people milking the system, and country like that. Yeah, I know there is an employment problem but I suspect these people never sought employment in the first place.

That is one of the damn problems with LIBERALISM. College is NOT for having fun, it`s for learning. Just like prison is supposed to be a place of punishment and misery, not working out, watching TV and having cake for lunch, but that`s what it is, again, thanks to Liberalism.

More is know about Jesus than George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, or Obama. People were willing to be tortured and murdered because they refused to deny what they knew to be true, that Jesus Christ had in fact been raised from the dead. Those who had abandoned him or denied knowing Him were transformed into people who were willing to die to share the hope they have in Jesus.

Jesus taught and lived a life where He put others before Himself. Christians are encouraged to do the same. Christianity is about believing and trusting God to do what we can't do; get ourselves right with a Holy, Just, and Righteous Creator. We all have sinned; we were all born with a sin nature that leads us to sin and rebel against a Holy and Righteous God.

Religion teaches man can get right with God through his own efforts. Atheists believe that there is no God and we all came about by a accident and from nothing. Christianity teaches us that God, Himself, made us right through Jesus Christ; that Jesus died for our sins and made us acceptable before God. There is no hate in Jesus or His teachings.

Yes, Christians are not sinless as our Savior. Yes, Christians have made a lot of mistakes throughout history, but it is not about us, but about our perfect, sinless, and Holy Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. Don't look at us Christians, because you will find a flawed ad sinful, but redeemed follower of Christ. Look upon the One, who Created you and died for your sins in order to make you Holy and acceptable before a Holy, Just, and Righteous God!

Mike, Christians if they are true to their faith, have every reason not to be sinful; Don't give me these " God is good but we are bad" type of theories; A born again CHRISTIAN does not lead a sinful life. Christ came into the world to save sinners just like a Doctor is available to cure a patient. Let's not make excuses for sin; Either you're a Christian or you're not. That's the problem! Too many people claim to be Christians, but their works tell a different story. You, as a Christian, are a light to the World; You, as a Wanna-be-but-cannot-be Christian, is phony, hypocritical, and reprobate. Jesus came to save you from your sins, not keep you content in your sins-Go figure! If we don't understand the whole concept of Salvation, how can we ever be free from sin? Don't be ignorant! Don't be deceived! Antichrists will tell you that you can lead a double life- but that's a LIE! How can you say that Christ has redeemed you when you're sticking to a flawed ad sinful life? Get a grip, Man Child! Get the word on good ground-then you will flourish. Wayside, Stony Ground, and Thorny Hearts can't receive the Goodness of God. If we want to be the Christian that the Word of God speaks of, We've got to submit to God fully and deny our self. God is not impressed with our lip service; God knows the Heart. And if your heart isn't in it, you're doing nothing but wasting your time. All of this will reveal the children of God from the children of the Devil. Christians must put sin in the "past tense" Mike. And it must stay in the "past tense" if we are to abide in Christ.

put a fork in it, not only were the gospel written 2nd and 3rd hand but Constantine and his group picked and chose what they wanted to be placed in the Bible. Every book about Jesus at the time were not placed in the Bible and more scriptures have since been uncovered.

Elder, perhaps that is the reason some people have left Christianity; when you say a Christian is expected to be just as perfect as Jesus was. I am a Christian, but I will willingly admit I've sinned (many times). I know that God will forgive me, just as Jesus forgave the criminal on the Cross that asked for it. Remember what Jesus told him, today you will be with me in Heaven.

Ginger, I agree. Americans can't even find the United States on a map!! We are ranked 25th in math & science of 34 nations one study says. Employers say college graduates lack basic skills and critical thinking when joining the workforce. With these sad figures, it would seem the students should spend every available moment studying something useful.

For my postgraduate studies abroad, I have been literally begging for funds. If I had known the Unit One had money to burn, I would have contacted the University!! Dayum!!

                            Chill out.

This is a week long seminar, not an actual class. It is designed to teach students how to make sex fun, but also make it safe. Students are having sex anyway, might as well make a small investment so they can learn to do it in a way that minimizes risk while maximizing enjoyment.

To suggest that hosting this seminar is correlated to the falling educational standards is nothing short of absurd.

I think the word you were looking for is "GALL", as in gall bladder. Unfortunately, this crap is the norm taught in almost every public college and university. This is what a tenure professor teaches our children, how to be a damn loser and expect handouts from your government. Why, because the government owes you a free living! This is what you get from a bunch of dope smoking atheist drop-outs from the Sixties teaching your kids. And they expect a new pay raise every year to teach them more crap that is absolutely useless. I remember my college professor who taught Constitutional History. He was a POS from CAL Berkley. You couldn't get more radical and anti-American than this POS! Most of the class was about how the "Man" lied to you about the Constitution. The Bill of Rights where for the white privileged class. I was surprised that after each class, I didn't go outside and puke.

Straight porn does not include condoms, typically, so I'm not sure a porn star is the best expert. There's also a lot of disease in the porn community because of it but they hide behind patient confidentiality.

You guys should do a lttle research on the subject. Ms. Sprinkle's seminars are more about female empowerment and self-realization, then general sex ed. Her goal is is to help women learn to enjoy sex and achieve a normal orgasm.

And Larry, yes, most college students really need some for of sex education, since most school programs are of the "don't" variety, with no real education in them and they certainly are not getting them at home. Most get their idea of college from the frat-boy-movies that college life is all about hooking up and having sex as often as possible with a many people as possible. It was that way decades ago when I went to a fairly conservative university, and it pretty much is still that way. A seminar with a frank discussion about the perils and pitfalls of sex, along with it's positive aspects presented in an environment that's not constricted by the prudes of society is exactly what is needed by America's new adults, which is what college kids are; adults that are fully, legally capable of making their own decisions.

Female empowerment comes from saying NO 100% of the time! I am female and in my middle twenties and was home-schooled K-12 before attending university online. I do not wish to EVER do that because it is disgusting. I would NEVER enjoy it and am proud of that fact. I received a well-rounded academic background from home-schooling, contrary to the belief that all home-schooled students are from illiterate backwater counties and that home-schooling is cover for Sunday school. As a "disclaimer," I did receive a comprehensive moral education, MINUS sex ed, which is useless to me anyway because I have no intent of doing such things. My parents never had to worry about me dating, because only bad people have sex. School is for learning, not for socializing or screwing. Sex is disgusting and obsolete, since procreation can be achieved through scientific means and there is no longer a necessity to perform the act. To do so purely for its own sake means there is something wrong with you. There is nothing to be enjoyed about it, and if you do enjoy it then you must be a psychotic pervert. And someone who I don't want to associate with or have my tax dollars going to support.

If it takes that to hold your attention, you probably shouldn't be in college.

Home-schooling is sufficient for those. But unless you expect parents or regular teachers to show and tell the kids about sexual activity, this seminar doesn't sound like a bad idea.

Reading, writing and arithmetic? You want college kids to be studying GRADE SCHOOL subjects? At what point do your children become adults able to handle adult subjects?

I don't think you should ever criticize our educational system again if your expectation is for colleges to be teaching "the 3 Rs". THAT'LL really get us some doctors, physicists and other professional people! NOT! If, as a parent, you're turning out 22 yr old children then you've failed your family, community, state and nation. Reading, writing and arithmetic indeed! Jeez.... Its YOUR kind of thinking that has us placed way down the list when being compared.

Unless you are a scholarship athlete, you have to be able to prove you can read, write, and do basic math before they let you into any institution of higher learning (except maybe that community college you went to).

There is no such thing as safe sex. All sex causes disease, and it's obsolete for procreative purposes. You don't need to have sex to make a baby anymore thanks to the development of IVF and genetic cloning procedures that are being studied as we speak in foreign countries while we're studying sociology of Hustler. It's great how you can pass judgment on somebody you don't even know. Did your god teach you how to do that?
