Youtube video shows damage to power lines and buildings in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, as a series of storms bring severe weather to Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. Msnbc's Milissa Rehberger reports.
Updated at 3:37 a.m. ET: TUPELO, Miss. - A swarm of tornadoes tore through several counties in southern Mississippi and Alabama on Sunday, injuring at least 10 people and ripping apart hundreds of homes and other buildings, including parts of the University of Southern Mississippi, authorities said.
The Forrest County seat of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and the adjacent town of Petal, both about 100 miles southeast of Jackson, the state capital, bore the brunt of storms that struck less than an hour before dark.
The tornado that plowed through the Hattiesburg area was believed to have reached three-quarters of a mile in diameter at times, said Anna Weber, a National Weather Service meteorologist.
The weather service counted three separate twisters in south-central Mississippi on Sunday evening, Weber said.
In neighboring southwestern Alabama, authorities reported a flurry of seven tornadoes across three counties, including one that damaged 46 homes in Clark County, Weather Service meteorologist Keith Williams said.
About 100 houses or more were damaged or destroyed in Petal, Mississippi, alone, and several businesses were hard hit there as well, including a hardware store reduced to rubble, Mayor Hal Marx told Reuters.
'Shaken up and in shock'
He said a number of residents suffered minor injuries but no one was reported seriously hurt. "Mostly people are just shaken up and in shock," he said.
Jeff Rent, a spokesman for the state Emergency Management Agency, said he had reports of at least 10 people injured throughout four stricken Mississippi counties, including eight who were taken to hospitals in Marion County.

Emergency management officials said no firm estimates of property losses were immediately available. Power outages were widespread.
Emergency management spokesman Greg Flynn said a search-and-rescue team from the nearby town of McComb was being called in to help look through debris for anyone who might be trapped.
On the Hattiesburg campus of the University of Southern Mississippi, alma mater of retired National Football League star quarterback Brett Favre, the storm damaged several buildings, including a performing arts center and an alumni house, the university said in a statement.

The twister also heavily damaged a high school stadium complex and blew a truck onto the school's baseball diamond, officials said.
Kris Walters, 40, a Baptist minister for the USM campus, said he and two of his children took shelter in a closet with a mattress on top of them until the storm passed, adding that his house escaped serious damage.
"I have lived here 40 years, and this is the first tornado I have ever seen like this," he told Reuters.
Video footage showed what appeared to be a large, gray tornado, filmed from a distance, churning through town as a cloud of debris swirled around it.
Rent, the state emergency management spokesman, said Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant had declared a state of emergency in four Mississippi counties - Forrest, Lamar, Marion and Lawrence - and other areas hit by the storms.
The Hattiesburg area also suffered heavy property damage from Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

I hope the injury assessments remain positive.
There is nothing worse than mother natures wrath. Always seems unfair.
I thought it was a seasonal thing..I have reversed my thinking that we can have a tornado anytime, anywhere, maybe combined with a snow storm ? We haven't seen that yet.
The damage was bad to the campus, and the homes that were hit, but luckily there were no deaths reported. I work in Hattiesburg, across the street from USM, but live an hour and a half away, and we also got hit with a tornado. Our cable had gone out an hour prior to the storms (and just now came back on), so I wasn't even aware of them until a message came on my phone. I opened my door after one of my co-workers alerted me by phone message to get in the closet "NOW". I heard the "roaring" sound everyone talks about, and when I did, I immediately grabbed the girls and into the closet...nope...water was coming in from somewhere. I guess we have a leak in the roof, ugh!.....so into one of the bathrooms. We were spared, but a house down the street from us was hit by that particular tornado.
Shock and fright are good words for when something like this happens. You hear about it all the time, but you never realize what it's capable of, until it's in YOUR area...and we call this tornado alley anyway. Last week I was seriously thinking of moving....to Hattiesburg. It would be closer to work and we would be out of the rural tornado bowling alley. I guess I'll need to rethink my strategy! lol
Now come on all you people who will ridicule my Conway Twitter name (which is just a play on words), especially because I'm in Mississippi! LOL Be gentle, will ya!
I'm actually transplanted from a big city, but won't say where because then you'll really whallop me a about THAT state! LOLOL
Have a good day all! :)
Anyone who lives in a tornado zone should have a storm cellar.
So glad there were no deaths and the damage to USM was no worse. I believe they had just finished working on the Alumni house. Again, so glad there were no deaths, and yes....the south really doesn't have a "Tornado Season", we can have them year round if the conditions are right. Bless all who have been affected by weather recently. Preparation is the best thing (though unfortunately tornadoes don't allow for much).
They're generally are but some the worst ones have occurred in Jan.
It would be nice if all homes already had them at the time of purchase. Cost of living keeps people from buying them.
johnww1,
Part of the reason that many homes in "Tornado Alley" don't have storm shelters is because the water table is not that deep in many places. This effectively means that you only have to go a few feet down and you'll have water seeping into your shelter. Top that off with the added expense of building the shelter in the first place and you'll understand why there are so few of them around.
I' have never seen a snowrnado..
Where's the whining and crying? Oh, that's right this isn't the NE.
True, but then the red states bring negative press upon them selfs anyway. Nothing new about that.
I didn't realize tornado season had started. Hope no one got seriously hurt, and not a whole lot of damage. Wonder how the low informed base will be yelling for FEMA, when they claim the govt is broke for helping in other places.
Another clown act of the GOP circus coming soon.
Tornado season doesn't really end in Mississippi. The weather patterns allow for them year-round.
Really, Michelle-398227? Well, scratch THAT off my list of go-to places to escape WI's winters!
Just once, compassion and concern would be nice, without bitterness, criticism and sarcasm from some corners. All states encompass our fellow Americans.
To Hattiesberg, our hopes for your safety.
The red states such as Mississippi keep the national politics from being skewed Sally. Some people in Oregon want to give undocumented immigrants in-state tuition. The left often has passionate over-reactions to simple situations and crises both.
I'd suggest growing up, and stop being the mirror image of the bible thumpers in the south. Far to the left with a weak mind but a strong mouth.
Brought to you by a Mississippi genius, and no, not a self-proclaimed genius.
Well hibbidyhooblah as far as that goes if you have to broadcast your "genuis" status it's a pretty safe bet it's a Self Proclaimed status award anyway. As far as your comments about "the left" and such... I've yet to see anyone that's leaning heavily toward either side that didn't slam the other side for being morons or worse and you've safely put yourself into that crowd. Real Geniuses and Intelligent people look to ALL sides for their information and make rational choices based on balancing that information by tossing out the garbage of BOTH extremes and then sorting the rest to figure out where the truth really lies. As far as that goes IF I have to be accused of leaning one way or the other I'd rather be accused of aligning with the Compassionate LIBERALS than with the selfish (and self righteous) Conservatives.
hibbidyhooblah
Is that the same in state free tuition that Texas Gov Perry gave the illegals?
http://teapartyhandbook.blogspot.com/2011/09/perry-rewards-illegals-with-free.html
Must have hit a nerve with my comment, right hibbidyhooblah? Why mention Oregon, I don't live there, but yes, Oregon is part of the Pacific Northwest.
Plus I'm not a mirrored image of the Bible thumpers, nor have I ever claimed to be a lib or a teabagger. I just call it like I see it, and what I said is the truth. And as for politics, how many anti-abortion bills have passed in that state in the last 4 years?
Nothing much on any jobs, but plenty of abortion. The GOP ran on a platform of jobs, not abortion. But then again, they LIED before when they said Obama would be a one term President. Guess the GOP can't help themselves from LYING and LOSING.
Saying Obama would be a one-term President wasn't a lie...they were just wrong.
What is it with you and the abortion thing in a state that you evidently don't live in? Are you for or against abortion? Just curious... But I fail to see how what one state votes on for their citizens affects you. I don't mind how your state votes on issues that affect only your state...
And I hope you hold your breath while waiting for the "low informed base" to yell for FEMA, and that impending "clown act of the GOP circus coming soon".
Really, SallyAnn, you just sound so low informed and redneck!
Michelle is actually very correct about her statement! I have never lived in a place I was so afraid to be in until I came here! I've never seen so many tornados or had to jump in the bathtub with a mattress so many times in all my life! It seems the storms hardly ever stop!
I honestly wouldn't recommend this place to even my worst enemy! lol
To see a "classy remark", look no further than # 2.4 ! Thank you Ro Mar for NOT turning a sad weather event into a political circle jerk of asinine statements !!
To see an "assy" remark, look no further than #2.1 and note the vile rhetoric that flows out, and the weak attempt at political bashing and self-laudation !!!
It is a bad weather event people .... doesn't have a DAMN thing to do with politics.
Maybe, you can't tell the difference between everyday speech and "whining and crying" in Dixie because you folks always talk like that.
Hattiesburg, are you and the family ok Brett??? Go PACK!!!
Nice call Forest Roamer, with the massive snow storm on the East coast setting new records, which has already claimed lives, including an 11 year old boy now, let's hope people were able to take cover and no one was injured or killed with this mother nature's latest event.
One doesn't think of tornadoes this time of year.Believing them to happen more likely in the summer or fall, more often in tornado alley, and there is a "season" for such. But they can happen any month, day and night. Especially in the South. Yet they have even been seen in the Rocky mountains. So no place is immune from them.
cunical-(Where's the whining and crying?)
Judging from your previous comments, when did you decide being a troll was your only talent?
SallyAnn-4595694-(True, but then the red states bring negative press upon them selfs anyway. Nothing new about that.)
How absolutely pathetic. You take a natural disaster producing event and turn it into a political agenda statement. How awful! What kind of human being uses a potential deadly situation for others, when they can't even bring themselves to first acknowledge that someone may have been injured or killed, ahead of their willingness to push ideologys in politics.
Probably the same type of person that has received that crap from the red state people, meaning the GOP. If you can dish it out, be prepared to have it served to you also.
And if you would read my whole original comment, you would see where I DID mention that I hoped no one was hurt or killed.
But like a typical GOPer, reading comprehesion is not a great skill the low informed base person has. Wonder why that is, too lazy to get off the couch and receive a good education?
Windancer. SallyAnn is correct in her statements about Red States. The Red States had better not ask for any help from the Federal Government. The Republiturd Party says that the Federal Government should not help ANYONE after a Disaster. The Republiturds want to keep everything for the Rich and the Super Rich. I dont understand how anyone but the rich could possibly be a Republiturd.
SallyAnn-4595694, Please don't criticize the reading comprehension of others lest we critique your writing skills.
True, but then the red states bring negative press upon them selfs anyway. Nothing new about that.
The correct word is themselves. And there's nothing new about that either.
Did SallyAnn forget her meds this morning or is she always that self-righteous, haughty, arrogant and condescending ?
The funny thing about extremist liberals is they seem infected with this self-appointed superiority complex ! Then they go and make ridiculous statements in an obvious attempt to prove they are only jerks !
Perhaps SallyAnn could explain the bad weather that New Jersey ????
The funny thing about extremist liberals AND conservatives is that they all seem infected with this self-appointed superiority complex! Why single out only the liberals? I've seen some doozies on the right as well. I haven't counted them, but they seem to be out there in about equal numbers. You expecting something else from Newsvine, lol?
You call that a tornado??? Here in the midwest that would be a dust devil!
There's no humor in your comment as major damage has occurred.
Why don't you move to the Northeast as you seem well prepared for these disasters and maybe could help others.
Just saying I was on campus when this hit... It was huge and for us "Mississipians" to have a tornado to hit is a big deal. At least with hurricanes you can plan... this was not planned. No pun intended but anything of this nature is not to be joked about.
Shay,
I'm glad you are safe and hope your fellow students all fare as well.
Excuse me, that tornado was over a mile wide and had a damage path that hit 5 counties in Mississippi and few in Alabama before it was done. It hit my brothers home in 1 county, took out my aunt's business in the next county (near USM), leveled my sis in laws mother's home 20 miles from there, and missed my parent's house 2 counties over from there. It picked up stores and put them in streets, damaged several schools, and the National Guard was sent in for search and rescue since people were trapped in stores and in homes. It may look small on that screen, but it was a monster. And to whomever said something about them screaming for FEMA to help and blame the government when things dont go their way.....Mississippians dont stoop that low. They get out there and clean up the mess, with or without help. I am a resident of Florida, but I will always PROUDLY say I am from Mississippi. So as a good southern raised girl, Ill just say "Well just God bless yall's ignorant little hearts."
jeez lissad, sounds like it had it out for ur family.
No thankfully no one was hurt. I just happen to have close family scattered through the damage path. There are some videos that better show just a bit of the distruction this thing did. I just take offense to those that put MS down, belittle anything that happens that is worthy enough to be shown on worldwide news, and then those that lump MS people in the "Katrina sob story" bunch. I was still living in MS during Katrina and it was horrible, but it has mostly bounced back and they did it by working together. They didnt place blame because nature is unpredictable and it can be a real *****......as seen yesterday.
I feel quite sure the City of Tuscaloosa and the University of Alabama will understand your fears and will send Southern Miss their prayers !
The devastation that occurred in that college town took the lives of 4 students, and before the day was done, the death count in the State of Alabama alone was over 200 !
Now, I will sit back and what to see what degree of venom will flow from the leftists, the agnostics, and the self-declared smarter than thou geniuses that delude themselves into believing they are the only ones having an education !
Unfortunately, as the climate changes we can expect more extreme weather events: tornadoes in Winter, super blizzards, super hurricanes, etc. Get used to it, this is the new normal.
Okie Joe. There is no such thing as Climate Change, ask any Republiturd.
Actually, tornadoes in the winter in the south aren't that unusual, especially in February. When the Gulf Stream brings the cold air from the north far enough to the south to meet the warmer air from the Gulf, tornadoes are common. November has a lot of storms, as well. Seasonal changes...
Okie-joe, yet another low information poster. The climate change liars don't believe in science Butterbean, they just like to make noise and induce fear.
I lived in Hattiesburg a good portion of my life. There are a lot of good, hard-working, law-abiding, patriots that live there. It's remarks such as what SallyAnn-4595694 says that makes me believe that there is nothing we, as Mississippians, can do to earn a little respect in this country. We didn't even earn recognition of the level of damage that hit after Katrina. Most of the recognition went to New Orleans, and all we got was being called the "Landmass between Louisiana and Alabama." To add insult to injury, we had to use FEMA - incompetent bunch of A-holes - if we were to get some type of relief from Katrina.
So, now that the shoe is on the other foot, how does it feel to get hit by Sandy and all that snow? The Christian thing to do is to forgive others that have trespassed against us, but we will never forget how people treated us before and after Katrina. We have learned to take what mother nature throws at us and keep on rolling. The best of us will go on to meet there maker, and the strongest of us will continue to rebuild for a better future. Keep throwing your pathetic remarks our way, and see how much we ignore you as the piece of trash you are. Good night to all, and God bless you - B****.
To be fair to some here getting a lil crabby they did get the "well its god punishing them" comments and fight for aid when it came to nj and ny. personally i would not wish sever weather on anyone but some do still feel snubbed.
Unbelievable! All kinds of aid, muscle power, the National Guard, and volunteers flocked down south to help after Katrina. We as a nation help each other in times of crisis. There is no one area that handles natural disasters better than others. We all live in high risk areas; whether it be forest fires, mudslides, hurricanes, tornadoes and snowstorms, we all get hit, and survive. I can't believe the political "mudslinging" that goes on. We are all responsible for ourselves first, and each other. Keep up the good work Americans, in showing kindness and generosity! I'm proud to be an American! My prayers go out to you guys down south, and to my fellow New England states here in the North East who have a long haul ahead. Everyone wants the government to do something immediately, and unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. Rome wasn't built in a day. Katrina survivors know it is taking a long time to rebuild, and so will Sandy survivors. The governement isn't going to make everything better, nor should we expect it to.
Please end global scamming Bolsheviks roofs may collapse from all the snow. By the way debt of trillions and trillions create wealth for corrupted idiot socialist. Good day you scumbag liberals.
Davidlotsanumbers--tragic consequence of combining Adderall, alcohol, and a computer keyboard...
Prayers are with the folks of Hattiesburg, MS tonight, and I hope they are safe.
I wish folks would leave politics out of disasters, and just wish their fellow Americans the best. :/
Thank you, nice post. Sally get over yourself already. If you have never lived in the south, maybe someday you should. I bet you would never leave either.
Whether north, south, east, or west, let's not snipe. I'm sorry for all the losses and hearts broken, north and south. I've lived in both, nearly killed in Maryland in the snow and ice, and seen what tornadoes do in the south, and it isn't pretty, may those injured and t hose passed heal and rest in peace. I will say that we should all know by now that global warming is a fact and there are humans across the globe who should hang their heads at what we are seeing - innocent animals losing their habitat and now the humans (including innocent human children with pulmonary disease) are suffering alongside them. Surely those who did not care have made Our Lord so angry.
Nice post but global warming has not been proven to be a "FACT". There is a lot of evidence supporting this THEORY, there is also evidence going the other direction !
Proving "causality" is something that will likely never go beyond hypothesis.
Jim,
Please read on what a "theory" is. How it's different from a "hypothesis", and what "facts" do for a "theory".
By the way, Newton's "laws" (including classical gravity) are just imprecise theories, approximations of more precise theories. There are conditions when they don't hold true. But in everyday applications they are true.
You know some teabagger wants to say it, so I'll do the Tealibanis a favor and post it for them--
"Ban tornadoes!!!1!!1!"
There, my good deed for the day... /sarc
Way of life. Usm will be fine.
Hopefully everyone got through this unharmed.
My prayers go out to all those effected by the tornado in Hattiesburg and the surrounding areas. I hope the injuries are minor, the death toll remains zero, and that recovery is quick to come.
Thant being said, would like to address comments made by S Chappell, SallyAnn, and Winddancersong above:
S Chappell: " It's remarks such as what SallyAnn-4595694 says that makes me believe that there is nothing we, as Mississippians, can do to earn a little respect in this country"
I am sorry you feel that there is nothing you can do to earn the respect of the rest of the country. Perhaps, if you would get rid onf the right wingnut job politicians, remember that everyone doesnt believe in the same god(or any god) as you do, Stop trying to impose your religious dogma on the rest of the nation, respect ALL your citizens, reguardless of race, creed, color, national origin or sexual orientation, and quit whining about the federal spending when it is you folks in Mississippi who take the most and give the least. That might put you on a pathway to achieve your goal.
Sallyann: "Wonder how the low informed base will be yelling for FEMA, when they claim the govt is broke for helping in other places."
I too, wonder. S Chappell brings up Katrina and the poor response by FEMA. He/she would do well to remember that Katrina was a disaster under the watch ot GOP President GW Bush, and that his political appointee, "Heckuva a job Brownie" had no idea how to actually manage such an event. The current administration has completely overhauled FEMA and actually has an administrator that understands how to deal with the human tragedy and physical disasters.
Also, he/she would do well to look back just a few weeks and see that NONE of his/her representatives voted to suuply aide to Superstorm Sandy victims... because "It costs too much" Well, maybe it costs too much to re-build Mississippi every other year too?
Winddancersong: See remarks above. We are one nation out of many individuals. I believe that comments by SallyAnn and from me also are because of how the idealogues of the Bible Belt and the rest of the financial conservatives usually bellow about how it is "God's Will" that these things happen, or that God is punnishing us for straying, Or from the fiscal conservatives, "we're broke, we cant help" but when something happens in THEIR district.. they are very quick to ask for aid. AND the re-occurrance of events in that area is much greater than say West Coast earthquakes or Northeast Superstorms.
I dont wish ill on anyone in America, but I do wish that folks from Mississippi and the rest of the Bible Belt South would understand that we are all in this together and that we need to help our neighbor, no matter what their color, background, sexual orientation, religion, or financial staus might be. They just havent seemed to have learned that lesson yet.
You seem to view Mississippi as just a stereotype.
You seem to view Mississippi as nothing but a stereotype. You shouldn't view millions of people as nothing more than some superficial characteristic.
How's this for documentation:
http://www.businessweek.com/news/2012-03-12/mississippi-whites-not-used-to-help-back-republican-aid-cutters
EMDF
My main point is that you seem to think that all Mississipians are racists (40% of Mississippians are black, in case you didn't know). You seem to dislike a large population of people based upon their geographical origin, yet you're condemning Mississipians for (allegedly) disliking a large group of people based upon their geographical origin (Africa).
I'm not sure how to explain my point any clearer to you. I'd like to hear your explanation about how your dislike of Mississippians is any different than a racists dislike of 'Africans'.
I know its tough not to be bitter and we did get those god's will comments. But it was not everyone in the south that acted like that. And even for the ones that did would you really want to stoop to their level.
EMDF9A, you are unfortunately misguided my brother. You see, it is not the Southern states or the Republican politics that lack respect. Its actually those from the Liberal states and their politics that are a shame. Most all big cities are hell holes to walk in and almost all are run by Liberals.
Furthermore, it humors me even more that so many from these so-called respectful states such as California feel that they are above all and love standing on their own pedestal and yell about what the so called disrespectful and racist Southeners are doing but yet ignore what is going on in their own backyard. Remind me again, when was the last time you saw a Rodney King incident or now this crazy Christopher Dorner guy going crazy because of racist acts against him? And to top it all off, the majority of blacks reside in the south.
you two should get together two pea in a pod. Both so blinded by hate for the other side and think yours is perfect.
Wow, and all I keep hearing is pot meet kettle.
pol-540313, I think god was angry that somebody raised the confederate flag at the capitol.
We are thinking of changing to the Muslim flag in respect of the fraud in the White House.
Hope everyone is safe. Mississippi, think twice about sadistic, racist pranks like, (Hanging the Confederate Flag on the Supreme Court building accidently) because you think it's funny? Looks like the joke is on you.
What the hell does the flag in Jackson have to do with a tornado at USM? Geez, take your meds and go to bed.
If only you knew that one individual's idiotic foolishness can lead to the destruction of an entire community. Read the WORD! If you are wise enough to even understand what the WORD is!
WoW! What a shame that so many of my fellow Americans spew such trash about a different part of the country than where they live. I've been blessed to live in the North, South, East, and West and have met many fine people in each area of the USA. Show a little compassion for this tragedy and the people whose lives it has affected. After all, we are all little threads that make up the great tapestry of the United States. Be proud to be an American and act like it.
We could investigate the root causes of this and they all seem to stem from something plausible to some doom's day scenario. Let's see, God could have done it. Maybe he wanted to tell those people to go to Church. And if they already going to Church, then it's a test of faith. Check. Note: You cannot sue God in a court of law.
It might have been caused by global warming causing water to rise, changing weather patterns, putting more humidity in the air, thus "those pathetic humans did it to themselves!" Note: I'm not to blame for the extra Co2 in the atmosphere - I blame those pesky volcanoes in Siberia. They're the ones to blame for this!
Finally, we can just call it regular, normal, snafu. Situation normal: all @!$%#ed up.
The News loves to report snafu because we love to get all excited over nothing.
Of course, I sympathize for all you poor people caught in this damn thing. x(
Storms and bad weather are destroying communities around this country almost as bad as our politics. How are we going to survive?
The tornado forced them to take time out of their studying Creationism 101 and Science: Child of man or Satan?
Hope all are safe and those idiots in Washington don't screw around with your aid too!
Isn't it early in the season for tornadoes?
@save the environment: It may be just a little bit early, but the tornado season starts in February. This is actually one of the most dangerous times, with the cold air still moving in from the north meeting the warmer air from the Gulf.
I haven't seen any weather reports to see if this same system is moving up to NE, but definitely hope not...those poor people have suffered much, as have the people in Mississippi and across the south and in every other state.
@all the others who posted snarky, sarcastic or holier-than-thou comments: Regardless of political or religious beliefs, regardless of race, creed, color or sexual orientation, regardless of geographical locations - above or below the Mason-Dixon Line - we are all just people, we have the same needs, we have the same feelings and we all bleed red. We each are born naked and blind and each will leave this earth alone...each and every one of us. No one person is better than anyone else, regardless of how much you think of yourself. We should have compassion for those who are in need and in danger. Sadly, I believe the lack of compassion and love for our fellow citizens is what will really bring this country to it's knees. A house divided...
When I saw Mississippi/Alabama in the headlines, I came directly to the comments without reading the article. I knew there would be those posting that would seem happy that this disaster has happened in the south. I was correct and to those who posted the snarky comments, I do hope you never have to endure anything comparable. I hope you will be forever blessed with good weather, good luck and good health.
My Dad lived a few blocks from USM and passed when he was 89. I'll never forget that during the funeral procession, we passed an older black man walking on the sidewalk. Once that man realized that a Hearse was carrying a flag draped casket, he removed his hat and held it over his heart until we had all passed. It was close to 100 degrees outside, but this gentleman showed respect for a fellow human. Something that many posters here today could learn from.
After Katrina, I could not believe the number on "blue tarps" on the majority of houses. They suffered serious damage from that storm, but outside of the local media, we did not hear much about this very nice and friendly city!
this gentleman showed respect for a fellow human. Something that many posters here today could learn from.
This is not uncommon in the South MTM however some think nothing but bad of the south. I lived in the North East, but prefer the South. The hospitality and the people you can not get any better.. Thanks for sharing your story.
That area around Hattiesburg MS, is always hit by tornados every two years or so, but I think this is the first direct hit on the city, most of the tornadoes where always south of there near Purvis Ms. It seems to be the same way around Jackson MS, Memphis Tn also... It is crazy how the weather seems to repeat it's self over and over...
Some people wonder why the rest of the country doesn't think much of some of the Southern states. One big reason is those states, besides being red states, are TAKERS. They receive more money from the feds than any other states.
Then look at what their elected people do when they get to DC. I don't think anymore needs to be said, does it?
And for the ones that have problems with reading comprehension, "I HOPE nobody was killed or injured." Is that easy for you low informed base people understand? Sure hope so.
I hope your employed Sally, and if so how about that tax increase you idiot.
@SallyAnn:
"Some people wonder why the rest of the country doesn't think much of some of the Southern states. One big reason is those states, besides being red states, are TAKERS. They receive more money from the feds than any other states."
SallyAnn, does the rest of the country know you are speaking for them? Were you elected to be speaker for the rest of the country or did you just decide you were the smartest one out there?
And the "besides being red states" gave you away...you hate them because they are Republican states. Or maybe because you believe they are all anti-abortion? Tell me, SallyAnn, do you support the death penalty? Or what about animals? Do you think it's ok to gas animals because they are an inconvenience? By the way, there's little difference between abortion and euthansia by gas or by lethal injection...dead is dead. Just wondering, because the abortion thing seems to be a sore point for you. Your rants made little sense and I really want to understand what you are in favor of, not just what you hate.
"Then look at what their elected people do when they get to DC. I don't think anymore needs to be said, does it?"
I actually do think you need to expand on that statement - just what is it that the elected officials do once they're in DC? Can you state facts, rather than alluding to some disgraceful actions, please? I bet I could name some not-so-smart actions or votes your elected officials have made, if I knew what state you are from. There is a skeleton in every closet, SallyAnn, even yours. You sound just like one of those "low informed base people" you seem to despise...just spouting what you have heard or how you feel instead of what you know as fact. How many people do you personally know that are from southern states, like MS or AL? If the answer is none, then you are not nearly as intelligent as you seem to think you are.
And one other thing...I don't believe the people in Hattiesburg will be yelling for FEMA to come save them...they are pretty self-sufficient down there and will see themselves thru this - maybe with the help of MEMA, which is the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, just for your clarification.
Could not have said it better Mark MCC. Always negative post from this person. God Bless
