A man opened fire at a Delaware courthouse on Monday, killing two women and wounding two others before he was fatally shot, officials said.
The shooting occurred at around 8 a.m. ET at the New Castle County Courthouse in Wilmington, Del., when the gunman was stopped by Capitol Police at a security checkpoint inside the main lobby, Mayor Dennis Williams told NBC10 in Philadelphia. The court was not yet open.
Delaware State Police Sgt. Paul Shavack said that the two people wounded were Capitol Police officers. They were transported to Christiana Hospital in Newark, Del., with non-life threatening injuries.
Shavack said the suspect exchanged gunfire with officers in the lobby. It was not immediately known whether the suspect was killed by police or died of a self-inflicted wound.
Police said they have preliminary identification of the gunman, who was in his late 20s to early 30s, but would not yet release that information.
Shavack said investigators and search teams were canvassing the 12-story courthouse building as a precaution to protect those still inside, but they believed the area was secure.
“We believe that this is a lone gunman but we continue to operate under procedure,” Shavack told reporters outside the courthouse Monday.
Defense attorney Brian Chapman told NBCPhiladelphia.com that the building’s security personnel make it very hard to breach security.
"There are at least four or five rows of metal detectors when you go in, you put your belongings through, then you have to walk through the metal detectors,” Chapman said. “Then there are usually eight to 10 police with wands checking everyone and after that you still have to walk by a desk where capitol police sit."
Dozens of police cars, ambulances and fire trucks were on the scene, and the streets were cordoned off for several blocks around the courthouse, DelawareOnline.com reported.
Five elementary schools and one high school in the area were on lockdown Monday morning.

This story is just made up, didn't happen. I did read that the courthouse was a gun free zone, therefore, it didn't happen. We all know that ALL people follow the rules.

It has been years since we have had but one entrance to our courthouse, all levels, and that we have to go through a machine, empty all pockets, purses, etc. with two guards. Did they have more than one entrance, without security?

Last time was went into the courthouse, a couple of idiots sent me up against a wall for having drugstore nail clippers in my pocket. I was instructed to 'remove them from the facility and lock them down in my car trunk'........"NOW".

The 1st thing to be done when starting a divorce or restraining order is make sure all participants do not possess firearms.

If everyone wants to dismiss these rampant reports about shootings as just "breaking news" then you should be asking yourself why they aren't reporting the breaking news stories about things such as the automobile accident at 3rd and main in Topeka that resulted in the deaths of 3 people. Isn't it the least bit odd to you that every left newspaper or left news outlet publishes every little story they can about people violence involving a gun? It should be a BIG RED FLAG for you, or you are just too conditioned and a lost cause.
Just another example of bad reporting. Who cares about the facts and such. Please don't report the story until you have all the facts which were verified by someone else. This is just some form of crap highlighting anti gun agenda!

Whatever happened to the metal detectors and guards at the whorehouses - er - I mean courthouses? Could it maybe have been done with inside help?
Blame the guns, the NRA, Fox news, rednecks, Republicans, not enough police, too many police, drugs, lack of drugs,etc. No matter what or who you want to point your finger at, it still comes back to the person behind the gun. Want to ban some thing that will reduce crime and violent behaviour? Ban humans. This will be the only answer to bad behaviour and violence.

The guy did not get past the metal detector. The shootings took place at the entrance before anyone passes through the detectors. This isn't an anti-gun story. It isn't a liberal lie. It is a factual occurrence. A nut with a gun killed his wife and her friend at the entrance of a courthouse. He was killed by security personnel.
Your obsession with your particular viewpoint doesn't mean the rest of us are caught up with seeing political issues with every crime...

Well, apparently this guy was a "law abiding citizen" until he shot four people. After that, not so much.

Another example to prove that no one is safe in America. I would assume that there would be some type of security, however it appears that a security officer was shot. So there you go. Being armed does not protect you. The shooter has all the element of surprise. It a person wants to kill someone and that person has a fire arm there is nothing much that stop them. In the past week a former navy seal and a number of police officers have been slain, people that you would think could defend themselves.

There was a gun and people were shot that's all the information we need.
The suspect is not in custody, he is dead. He was shot dead on the scene. Two other women are dead. and two guards are in the hospital with non-life threatening conditions. 6 schools are in lock down for precautionary measures.
The news media is jumping on any gun violence to see a story. This story does not answer the 5 "w"s of who, what, why, when and where. If the lead had been "Mayor escorted to courthouse" you would have covered the questions. You did not say why the guy shot the people no names no information. If you had gone with the other lead you would have given who, Mayor, where courthouse, why because of a shooting, when the date and time and the what I don't know about that. Your reporting is sloppy and you are grabbing for sensationalism.
