Hadiya's mom: State of the Union will be 'bittersweet'

Scott Olson / Getty Images

Cleopatra Cowley, arriving with her son Nathaniel for the wake of her 15-year-old daughter Hadiya Pendleton.

It was an invitation she wishes she had no reason to accept.

The mother of Chicago gun-violence victim Hadiya Pendleton will be in the audience for Tuesday night's State of the Union address in Washington, D.C. — and she is expecting a flood of mixed emotions.

"It's bittersweet," Cleopatra Cowley said. “Because it’s as a result of losing my daughter, but it’s also exciting to have an opportunity like this.”

Her presence in the House of Representatives chamber as President Obama delivers his annual address to the country will be a poignant reminder of the toll of gun violence in America.

Cowley — who was invited as a guest of the first lady, according to White House aides — said she will be listening to the speech with an open mind.

“I really just want to hear what he has to say,” she said. “Then I can formulate my opinion.”

But there's no question she's looking for action.

“My baby deserves a revolution and I pray that what happened her to her will have an impact,” she said.

Cowley’s 15-year-old daughter was shot dead two weeks ago while hanging out with friends in a park near school, just days after she returned from Washington, where her marching band competed for a chance to be in Obama's inauguration parade.

On Monday night, just after Cowley landed in Washington, Chicago police announced they had charged Michael Ward, 18, and Kenneth Williams, 20 -- putting a smile on the mom's face.

"I'm ecstatic," she said, adding that she hopes Ward and Williams are locked up for many years.

“Look at what they've done to me and my family. We put so much work into raising my daughter. We had hopes. My son no longer has a big sister. They deserve to feel something that is remotely comparable,” Cowley said. “But my daughter is dead and even if they are rotting in jail, they will still be alive.”

On Tuesday, Ward and Williams were ordered held without bond on first-degree murder charges. Prosecutors said Ward, the alleged trigger-man, confessed that the shooting was a case of mistaken identity and that Pendleton was "just there."

In the days since the shooting, her daughter has become a face of the national debate over guns and a symbol of Chicago's stubborn murder rate. The first lady was among hundreds at her funeral Saturday.

“That was amazing,” Cowley said.

“My daughter really wanted to perform directly in front of the president and first lady and didn’t have the opportunity. Having the first lady at her homegoing was like Hadiya having an opportunity to perform because of all the friends and family who gave feedback about her.”

She said she also appreciated Michelle Obama’s low profile at the funeral.

“She didn’t have a desire to have it be about her. She wanted to attend as a mom,” Cowley said.

Before the big speech, Cowley and her husband, Nate Pendleton, attended a hearing on gun safety called by Illinois Sen. Richard Durbin.

If not, it's smacks of opportunistic Obama drama.

Hello folks,

Cue the sheeple!

Here’s the dirty little secret – for all their hysterical anti-gun rhetoric, the gun grabbers really don’t care about saving lives – what they care about is power. They use tragedies like Sandy Hook to pursue their real goal, which is to disarm American citizens. They attempt to disguise their real intents, and in some cases even give lip service to the second amendment. One especially comedic example is that of John Kerry, who during his unsuccessful 2004 presidential campaign went on a photo-op “hunting” trip, complete with camos in order to show he supports “hunters”. Understand – and this is a crucial point – the second amendment isn’t about “hunting.” It never has been. The fact is that the right to bear arms was put into place by the founders as a means of protecting the citizens from tyranny. That is why would-be governmental gun grabbers hate that pesky second amendment. An armed populace is the one thing standing between them and what they want – an omnipotent central government accountable to no one and free to impose its will on a defenseless public. Sound harsh? Consider the gun policies of Adolph Hitler, Joseph Stalin and Mao Tse Tung and think again…

Reading the founders’ own writings about the right to bear arms makes it quite clear what their intent was when adding the second amendment. Chuck Baldwin wrote a recent column that addresses this issue and I will repeat here two quotes he used from Thomas Jefferson and George Washington:

“The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.” – Thomas Jefferson

“Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people’s liberty teeth and keystone under independence… From the hour the Pilgrims landed, to the present day, events, occurrences, and tendencies prove that to ensure peace, security, and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable… The very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference. When firearms go, all goes.” – George Washington

P.S. "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." Benjamin Franklin

IF the Congressional halls were lined with victims families who son or daughter were shot by gang related ILLEGAL weapons, there would be no place for elected officials to sit.

Wait a minute....Mrs. Pelosi stated just yesterday that this administration was not going to "hurt" legal gun owners FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS. Guess Mrs. Pelosi was just sitting in for Mr. Biden.

I wonder if Mr. Obama is going to invite children of Illegal Aliens (Immigrants) to attend. Yep !!

I wonder if Mr. Obama is going to invite all those Americans who will be hammered with TAXES because of ObamaCare. Nope !!

First the wing nuts were hating on Obama for supposedly ignoring Hadiya Pendleton's death because he didn't want to acknowledge the gun violence in his home town Chicago (even though he mentioned Chicago's gun problem in his inaugural address). But then Michelle Obama went to Hadiya's funeral, and now Obama invites the girls mother to the State of the Union speech. So now Obama is being "opportunistic".

No matter what Obama does, the haters will keep adjusting their conspiracy theories to justify their hate. The hate is the only thing constant with them.

And where do you think the guns come from? The gun fairy? http://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/virginia-repeal-one-handgun-a-month-law-bad-news-new-york-article-1.1030897

The State of Virginia’s repeal of a law limiting handgun sales to one weapon per buyer per month is sheer , bloody madness. And very bad news for New York.

Virginia is already the single biggest supplier of guns used by criminals in the city. Up the so-called Iron Pipeline, otherwise known as Interstate 95, gunrunners transport illegal firearms into the five boroughs, selling them in dark alleys and out of the backs of vans, to wreak death and destruction on the populace.

Houston! Explain to me then why the surrounding states that allegedly supply these guns, don't have as high or even higher rates of gun crime than $hitcago? I'm awaiting you well thought out explanation.

Why do I have to explain things to pinheads who can't understand that gun laws at the local level don't work very well if criminals can just buy their guns in surrounding states and bring them into cities with strict gun laws? Gun crime rates are high in southern states with big cities with high concentrations of poor people like New Orleans. The problem in Chicago may be the worst, and the reasons are complicated, which of course makes the problem way to hard for a gun nut to thing about without smoke coming out of his ears.

http://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/chicago-bleeds-article-1.1259253?pgno=2

Chicago must zero in on exactly where the breakdown is happening. If the cop on the beat is vigilant toward guns, what’s happening then? Is there a lack of desire to prosecute such crimes by prosecutors who are stretched thin? Or do prosecutors not quite trust many of the cases brought by police? And are judges looking the other way?

There is no real consensus, though it is crystal clear that the bad guys know the risk of bringing illegal guns into Chicago falls short of onerous, unlike in New York.

What is an often-articulated claim of Chicago’s comparative complexity comes from Patrick Fitzgerald, a Brooklyn native and renowned federal prosecutor who just ended a 10-year run as U.S. Attorney for the Chicago-based Northern District of Illinois.

He also prosecuted Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman and 11 others in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and, as a Justice Department special counsel, prosecuted Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief of staff, Scooter Libby, for perjury.

Fitzgerald subscribes to the belief that Chicago’s more numerous and deeply entrenched multi-generational gangs — said to number more than 100,000 members by credible estimates — play a role.

At minimum, he contends, they aggravate the problem when combined with drugs, too many guns, the lack of tough mandatory minimum sentences and, perhaps, less-demanding judges.

He has little sympathy for reflexive National Rifle Association responses to Chicago’s travail, namely that it somehow shows that gun control doesn’t work or that mere enforcement of existing laws is the solution.

“You can’t take seriously people who don’t want to know where the guns come from,” Fitzgerald, who is now in private practice, told me.

I feel Trayvon part 2 coming on. How long will it be before it comes out that this "majorette" was in a gang and dealing drugs, rather than being "mistaken" for a drug dealer by a rival gang. Gangs don't have much going for them, but one thing they are pretty good at is spotting other gang members and drug dealers. She was "slinging" on the wrong street and got the standard drug-dealer reply: a bullet. By the time this all comes out, of course, she will already be a saint with her picture on every black church bulletin board and have a gun-control law named after her. The truth does not interest politicians, and increasingly seems to not interest "journalists" either. Let the circus begin. Again...

The source you referenced not a news item but a biased opinion of the writer. He points out that in 2010, 372 of the guns that were used in crimes came from Virgina. That's a pretty small number considering the number of gun crimes in NY every year.

Your initial claim was that the guns used in Chicago crimes came from out of state as straw purchases, that is your statement where I was looking for your source.

MORE SHAMELESS LIBERAL/PROGRESSIVE EXLOITATION TO PROMOTE THEIR AGENDA!!!!!!

It's a wonder they didn't delay the burial of her daughter, Hadiya Pendleton, so they could have it tomorrow for more sensationalism.

You would think Barrack Hussein or Moochelle would invite Bill Stevens to the SOTU speech. He is the father of one of the surviving Sandy Hook students who supports gun ownership and said that his daughter's friend's little sister was one of the children that was murdered because, "when 911 and 'lock down' were not enough to protect her from an evil person, not protect her from an 'assault rifle' or some type of an inanimate object, but from an evil person."

Of course the limp-wristed Libbies will never allow a fair or balanced debate. Their minds are already made up.

You would think Barrack Hussein would invite the wife and children of murdered Navy Seal Chris Kyle who was the most lethal sniper in history.

Oh wait, Kyle was killed by a mentally unstable individual, we wouldn't want to expose that as probably the most important cause of gun related homicides. This wouldn't sensationalize the Liberal/Progressive propaganda that guns run around and murder people and THEN jump into the hands of some innocent human. Obviously this would require banning these "rogue" guns that have a mind of their own and deceivingly implicate innocent normal people.

Just think, Barrack Hussein could exploit his faux concern for our servicemen, or should I say "corpse-men". He could exploit the gun that first shot Chris Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield and then hopped into the hands of Eddie Ray Routh to appear that the gun didn't do this itself.

Rouths mental health problem, PTSD, would never be implicated as a major contributor to gun violence. That might actually help fix the problem.

Liberals don't want to fix this problem. They simply want more control of the American people. Of course this doesn't matter to the Libbies and the unwashed masses, as they lose more Freedoms for the sake of some mythical safety.

Actually, Gail, yes - many of the families from Sandy Hook were invited to the inauguration events, and testified to congress too. If you weren't so blinded by your hate, you might actually pay attention to facts.

Yep, just count the "I", "My", "Our", "We", "Them", and "Republicans" in his speech. You could add "economy" or "jobs" but these issues would probably only be referenced once or twice (inauguration speech).

Meanwhile, all the points he will try to make will be supported by someone in the audience: Gun vicitim's families, Illeal Alien (Immigrant) children, teachers, firefighters, and maybe even a broken bridge.

Did he really say that "best and brightest" thing? Aren't most of the kids who "are dying in the streets" ghetto kids with no future anyway? It's unfortunate they get killed, but let's not pretend it's happening in places where people who matter live. If your parents don't have the sense to get their kids out of a hell-hole inner-city zoo, then what are the chances they will inspire those kids to be anything but another generation of aimless hoodlums and parasitic breeders? Sure there will be a Colombine or a Sandy Hook every now and then, we've got over 300 million people here. In a group that big there will always be aberrations. Look at the overall numbers, though. Most of the people who get shot down in the streets are no great loss, drug dealers and/or gangster thugs. Good riddance.

Though my question was obviously rhetorical, it was also semi-serious. I thought that was a pretty insightful prediction you made, mpa, and I am slightly interested in whether it was correct, though not interested enough to sit through an hour of our Dear Leader's babbling. So, did he go for that cheap shot or not?

Now it's time to parade them out. Get the grieving family to come out and support the anti gun laws.

No one wants to talk about it but this girl was hanging out with KNOWN gang members. The media first reported this and then, they went silent about it. NOTHING has been reported since then. Doesn't anyone think it is strange that a gang member "mistook her and her friends as gang members." That's laughable. Some of her friends are KNOWN Gangster Disciples. This girl was hanging out with the wrong crowd and now Obama and his cronies are using this as a way to disarm the public. Come on people THINK!!!

Hello Dan, this is the type comment you get from the Newsvine Shills, they are paid to counter facts when it goes against the agenda their corporate and government masters are ordered to propagate.

Every one knows that Obama is going after the second amendment and will use whatever prop he can to try and disarm the nation. It aint going to happen! It's all about building a case to attack our constitutional rights.

Why don't the the presstitutes report all the murders we perpetrate on other countries and where are the progressives regarding the hundreds of thousands of children killed by our country in our name?

Consider the Sandy Hook school shooting. This shooting serves as an excuse for anti gun lobbyists to express their hatred of guns and the NRA and to advance their gun control agenda. Few if any of those hyperventilating over the tragedy know any of the parents of the murdered children. They have shown no similar response to the US government’s murder of countless thousands of Muslim children. The Clinton regime alone killed 500,000 Iraqi children with illegal sanctions, and Clinton’s immoral secretary of state Madeleine Albright, a feminist hero, said that she thought the sanctions were worth the cost of one half million dead Iraqi children. The Bush regime is just as guilty.

              http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4PgpbQfxgo

Suddenly, 20 US children become of massive importance to “progressives.” Why? Because the deaths foster their agenda–gun control in the US.

When I hear people talk about “gun violence,” I wonder what has happened to language. A gun is an inanimate object. An inanimate object cannot cause violence. Humans cause violence. The relevant question is: why do humans cause violence? This obvious question seldom gets asked. Instead, inanimate objects are blamed for the actions of humans.

I contend that some people hang out with known pedophiles and rapists regularly. If they are killed would that be "ok" too? A child is dead through no fault of her own. You would have to be heartless to rationalize that she had it coming.

And where is it written that the president wants to disarm the public? Cite the Source! And not just an article that someone posted online.

I know I am going to get slammed for this, but I wonder if Michelle would have attended the funeral of a white kid that got shot or if they would have invited the white kid's mother to the Union address.

For those who think I'm prejudiced, please believe me I'm not. For one thing, I voted for Obama and I'm still mostly glad I did. Also, I was an Army brat and everyone is the same regardless of the color of their skin. My best friend in 3rd grade was a black kid, and if you had asked me what the difference was between us, I would have said that's a silly question -- he's a boy and I'm a girl. I don't understand racial prejudice, but as I've gotten older I've learned about reverse prejudice and I don't understand it either. It all just made me wonder...

Lisa-2564810 - from one Lisa to another Lisa--I can identify with what you are saying --I'm liberal in some ways, conservative in others, and also own firearms. It also fries my bacon to see people stereotyping and painting with the same brush. The picture I get in my head is this: the people of this nation are allowing themselves to become polarized, to be pitted against each other. And I think it has been going on for a long time. I believe that our 2 party system is broken--for decades now, both parties have been 'donated' to by major corporations--there are even major corporations that donate to both parties simultaneously just to have a foot in no matter who wins. All the name calling that We the People do, goes on on both sides and is disheartening--and it doesn't achieve anything constructive, either. I believe that balance of power is key to freedom, and that balance of power needs to be on all fronts.

Its bad enough that they were victims and now the Left is victimizing the families of the victims to use as Pawns to support their agenda.

                  This is just America, 2013.

Seems that 51% of those who vote want it this way. Those who don't vote don't seem to mind.

Beacuse Obama and Moochelle don't have them. All they have is a thirst for power and a willingness to stoop to any level to buy-off people or use them in order to obtain it.

                  a thirst for power

I would say that being the first black family in the white house that that thirst has clearly been quenched.

@Carlyn, for some reason people love to be negative and hateful. The internet just gave them the courage to be more vocal about it.

Since Obama sent fully automatic assault rifles to Mexican drug gangs to kill innocent people with, does anyone think we could have an incident arranged here in the USA?

Let's politicize the tragedy and use her for the poster child for gun control since no one seems to worried about advocating CRIME CONTROL!!!! This was a CRIME. Some idiot gang member shot her. By the way, Chicago has those tight gun controls. They worked well for this innocent girl, didn't they? where's this gang banger? We know he murdered her. String him up. Hook up the jumper cables. put the needle in his arm. Let justice be served. Show THAT on nbc news and see the reactions. Im guessing they will pawn him off as a victim of broken families with no values and he couldn't help himself.

I think Hadiya's mother knows why she is there and why should'nt she be? She lost her daughter and has an opinion on illegal guns as she should have. If any of us would lose a son or daughter, I imagine we would have something to say about guns. The mother did not have to go, she chose, so give it a break.

Whats her mother going to do make a plea to all the criminals and gang bangers to give up their Illegal guns?

canespider, The President of the United States asks for your presence, you go. Cleopatra is still in shock as any parent would be. I'm surprised Shatira Wilks wasn't asked, she is the cousin and spokesperson for the family during this unbearable time. Ms Wilks was the one making statements and was quoted during Hadiya's Funeral. Do you think Ms Pendleton is there to speak or as a symbol for gun violence? Because if she or Ms. Wilks were to speak, they might ask Barack Obama why are you getting involved at this late date? Why didn't you do something as a community organizer in Chicago when you had the chance? Had you, Hadiya would still be alive. Why didn't you make the gun violence problem clear with Rahm Emanual when you endorsed him as the right guy for mayor? And finally where are you going to be months from now?

                      What a joke....

Obama's overplaying his hand with this, and he's too stupid to know it.

He DOESN'T HAVE public opinion on his side, yet he insists that everyone "contact their Representatives"...

Half the families in our Republic own firearms...and he thinks he has support for his anti-gun, far-left agenda?

I thought he was the consummate, cunning politician.

He's made an extreme miscalculation, here.

But hey, still first-page news on ObamaNBC...

                      Nothing else important going on...

                      Like negative economic growth...

                      Like 22,000,000 Americans unemployed...

                      All is rosy in Obamaland.

Shhhh. We all know Obama and the left blew it with this.

This didn't have to be a divisive issue. No one likes gun violence and no one wants guns in the hands of criminals, mentally ill, drug addicts etc. Most Americans would not have a problem with making sure the current gun laws we have were actually being enforced, seeing where the holes are in the background check system and plugging them etc. If they had come out with reasonable proposals instead of all the extremist hyperbole demanding that the Second Amendment be repealed, gun Registration, confiscate all guns, etc. maybe things would have been different and something could have been done that would have a real effect on gun violence.

Instead of using it as an issue to bring the country together they manged to immediately start attacking legal gun ownership, Law abiding citizens, attacking the Second Amendment, trying to limit the type of guns that can be owned legally and magazine capacity as if guns are the problem and not Mental health issues, criminals, drugs, etc.

I mostly agree. Jumping on reinstating the AWB was a stupid move from a group that is usually very effective with their propaganda techniques.

I guess you gotta go with Joe when you have appointed him to head up the solution. I'll bet Barry and crew were livid when Joe announced that the ban wouldnn't solve the problem.

She had better have an opinion on the gang bangers of Chicago rather than the guns. Until you get the illegal crimes off the stret and the local people start turning in those that break the law, the gun laws mean nothing. she was killed by some rats that know her and live there, but no one is turning them in and there is not a big search going on to find those persons ( much easier than hunting the bad cop in LA).

Michelle's appearance, plus all the WH press core at the funeral, and the mother in Washington for the SOTU, is all political show. Nobody from the WH went to any of the other shooting victims funerals going on in Chicago over the past few days.
