Florida man confesses to killing wife, won't reveal where body is, police say

A South Florida man arrested in the murder of his vanished wife allegedly confessed to killing her, but didn’t say where her body is, Miami-Dade police said Monday.

Jesus Maqueira, 54, who was arrested Friday on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated stalking in the death of Raquel Maria Calderin, 42, is being held on no bond, online jail records said Monday night.

"Maqueira did not tell detectives where the body is, what he did with the body. He just said he killed her,” Miami-Dade police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said.

An arrest affidavit said that when Maqueira was confronted by investigators about his inability to explain the evidence against him, he allegedly replied, “Look, I killed her, so take me to jail.”

He laughed at investigators when they pressed him but refused to provide details, according to the affidavit.

Maqueira’s attorney, Adrián Nuñez, could not immediately be reached for comment Monday.

Detectives said that five months ago, Calderin filed to divorce Maqueira, her husband of more than 20 years. Maqueira showed up at Gloria Floyd Elementary School, where Calderin worked as a custodian, and begged her to drop the divorce proceedings, detectives said.

After their verbal dispute, Calderin became very upset and was sent home at 9:30 that night, according to police. She has not been seen since.

"She was on the phone talking to somebody. The phone line went dead. And there hasn’t been activity on the phone line since then,” Zabaleta said. “There hasn't been any activity on her bank accounts. People haven’t seen her, (she) has missed social gatherings.”

As the case was handed to homicide detectives, a man who said he was Calderin’s boyfriend told NBC 6 that he was furious about the police investigation, claiming that no one was doing anything.

But police said they did. They said they put up fliers and followed up on leads, but then the case went cold.

"When you have a missing loved one, you want to find her,” Zabaleta said. “And when you're not getting concrete answers from investigators, you seem to think that nothing’s being done.”

Police began to investigate Maqueira, and said they found from cell phone records that he was in the immediate area of the school when Calderin disappeared.

Police spoke with the couple’s three children as well. Investigators determined that at some point Maqueira tried to “coach” the children about the case, the affidavit said.

But when Maqueira came in for questioning, he gave numerous conflicting statements that were disproven by the children’s statements and the phone records, according to the affidavit. He then allegedly confessed, police said.

Sounds like a reverse-psychology ploy. "Hey, if I confess but don't provide a body they'll think she's actually still alive and doesn't want to be found, and I'm just covering for her! Like in da movies! yeah that's the ticket!"

I don't think this guy is even remotely close to being smart enough in conjuring up complex psychological plan like that. I think he is just being a looney and hard to deal with about the particulars of what he did to her. Fry this guy!

So, he needs to stay alive long enough to provide location of the body because I would imagine her family would appreciate some closure on this. Then they can do whatever they want with him, (even though illegal, preferably hang him).

    #1.7 - Tue Feb 12, 2013 11:14 AM EST

What? sounds to me that he knew he was caught. He is holding back where the body is, till they make a deal to not go 1st degree or life, for exchange of where body is. Or it is that he is just nuts. Is it just me, or has FL gone off the deep end lately. So much reported nasty killing there lately.

Maybe not the world's capital, although they do show up in industrialized societies because it's convenient for them. One of the reasons for Florida being unique is the climate. Same situation in California that has a lot of weirdos as well. It doesn't snow much in the south, people can live outdoors pretty much and don't have to take on a lot of responsibility.

The wife was cheating, the article mentioned her boyfriend. I don't feel sorry for her. This country has absolutely NO problem with cheaters. There's no loyalty for anything or anyone anymore, not even your own family. Therefore, I dont care. He looks/seems crazy but he was pleading with her about the divorce papers, maybe he loved his family and felt dire. I can imagine finding out about my spouse and going off the deep end. There should be a punishment for cheaters, maybe not death but a good ass whipping seems good. Oh man, whos going to tell me I'm crazy for having MY opinion???? Can't wait to see all the FEMALE responses...lol.

This is the first that I have heard of this case. Glad that they are making some kind of progress on it. Often turns out it was the spouse who did it -- I do not get the impression that this guys is any kind of master mind/crimal genius or anything -- but on the other hand, some of us here may watch too many crime movies or a little too much much Law & Ordr or CSI. Unlike in that "make-believe "true crime" things -- They can question you -- They can say you did it -- and you could even say " sure, I confess, you got me copper" -- That is not enough folks -- They still need actual proof, evidenct and the dead body is a big help too-- Just because they arrest you does not mean you are gulity -- and as we have seen --ajust because they charge you or put you on trial --does not mean they will get a conviction --especially there in FL -- Florida is a strange state. Let's just hope justice is done in the ned.

Amanda- The article says that this guy claims to be her boyfriend, but doesn't offer any proof beyond what he said. So she may or may not have been cheating. Are you saying that if she was cheating, she deserved to die? I agree that cheating is a terrible thing, and can be really hurtful, but is it worse than murder? I don't think so. Punishment for cheating tends to be more on the civil end-some sort of suit, less awarded in the divorce, etc. Because of his actions, their children no longer have a mother (and won't have much of a father anymore, since he'll probably be in jail at least until they reach adulthood). From her actions, their parents may not have lived together anymore, but most likely there would have been some custody arrangement where the children still got to see both parents.

@amanda if you need a good ass whooping, I'd be happy to oblige you. I agree. Let me grab you by the hair and force you to be with me, if that's what you have been needing. Then when I catch you cheating on me, since I'm the one who is going to be in charge, I will choke you and tell you it's what you needed. Again, I agree with you. I think this country has gone soft, and its women with it! If I accidentally kill you while I am "punishing" you for not doing what I say, then I wont feel sorry for you either. I am glad we found each other. Call me, hugs & all sorts of lovey stuff..Demon

Wondering how the threat of having to pay permanent alimony (which ends at DEATH) affects a person psychologically... For a 20 year marriage, permanent alimony wasn't a maybe, it was a definite. That can be too much for some people to handle, especially if they didn't want the divorce in the first place.

Another lowlife that thinks he is better than anyone else.

This guy isn't worth the air he has been wasting and sadly this poor woman who only wanted to get away from him has now most likely lost her life.

          Here's the kicker,

Sadly the laws will protect this sleazeball instead of finding a way to get the facts out of him. All of these lowlife criminals deserve to be put through every possible pain inducing act until they spill the beans so to speak. Then after everything is wrapped up tightly and their guilt proven beyond any dought, put down in the same exact manner that they used on there victim. Anything of value they might have owned would be divided between the families of the victims.

Why should society have to put them up in prison period? The big question is do they deserve to live after what they have done to someone else? If they cause someone to become disabled by there actions then they should also have to endure being disabled in the same manner. (An eye for an eye)

I think we put these lowlife scum in prison because we believe its up to God to deal with them and I am a god fearing person myself but its not right that they are allowed to continue living (even in jail) when they took someone else's life, its like they are getting to deal out there own form of justice and we cannot do squat about it.

The only brand of justice that truly fits for murder is "Any eye for an eye" brand of justice.

I would think in this day and age that society could find people willing to be the executioner since so many people now do not believe in any form of a higher power. (god) Of course whoever were to get the job of executioner would have to watched very closely to make sure they don't go "bat crazy" themselves later on.

I wonder if there has been a serious poll of the people of the US to see what people really think/feel about this issue? With all of the violence we now all face daily I believe its time for a change where it truly would matter.

I am sick and tired of animals getting putting away to live out there miserable life at taxpayer expense.

Sorry for the long post but this really pisses me off and what about the families who have lost someone because of these less than human beings. (Animals are way above these types in intelligence)

First off, I don't really trust any police obtained confessions. I take those with a grain of salt. Additionally, there isn't a body, and thus no proof that she is dead. Remember, he is innocent until proven guilty, in the court of law.

But since we're not in a court of law, it definitely sounds like this guy is guilty, in which case, I believe in the death penalty and maximum sentencing for someone with the gall to laugh at investigators about his "wife's" death.

Yeah and I wonder how long Calderin was sleeping around. I'll bet it was longer then the 6 months or so that she filed. Wonder if the kids are even Maqueira's.

Women commit about a third of the murders in this country - way under-represented, no?

They also commit about 2/3 of family-related child murders.

We need some sort of Affirmative Action to even these numbers up, right?

DAMN MEN! Why do men have to commit all these crimes? It's almost as if the world is full of nothing but MEN and women! When is someone going to start documenting all the escalating orangutan domestic violence that is NEVER reported??? WTF!

                        @Old man 66

Is valid your point but, is hard to proved that a person have the intention to kill, you don't know (obviously). So you are going to arrest people just because they are in the park watching others people jogging or eating, etc? Make no sense. The only thing police can do is granted the victim a "protection order" but we know that just legal crap and did not help you at all. The only thing to do is protect yourself and don’t be naive, is common sense and never, never, ever be alone!!!! it only take seconds to end life...

@Gwp3fo If a order of protection is in place and the stalker makes contact he should be arrested and charged. If a threat of death is made he should be charged and sent to jail for a long time, not just overnight. I agree take any threat for real and keep prepared to defend yourself or stay with someone who will protect you. If the threat arises ACT to END the threat - end of problem!!

When I moved to FL from NJ, I had a new permanent restraining order in hand good in all states. The NJ judge told me to be sure I filed it of record in FL when I got down there. So I went to the courthouse in Viera and the Clerk's office said to file it with the Sheriff's office. Went to the Sheriff's office and they told me to go back to the Clerk's office to file it. I went back and forth like a ping pong ball until I finally gave up. My restraining order was never filed on the record. I carried a copy of the restraining order on me at all times. Worse yet, when my ex followed me in his car down there and I called the Sheriff's office, it was insinuated that I was making it all up and I could pay a high price for that. Now is this protection? It's hard enough to be in a bad situation to the point where you want to puke constantly, but to get no help from law enforcement? This is how women end up dead in domestic situations. I found out nobody cares except the issuing judge who heard the case.

Kat if your not a felon then get a gun and if he comes around pop a cap in his arse or even better right between the eyes, then staple the restraining order to the bullet hole

Better to be judged by 12 then carried by 6. Also you can't rely on the police as they are minutes away maybe hours when seconds count

Fishman, I'm thinking of doing just that and learning to shoot it. I have no record at all anywhere, so I need to find out where to buy a gun - I'm not familiar with that. My home borders a wooded area and that's kind of scary knowing he could be hiding there. I have never, ever known my ex not to get back at people - he always does.

Cat also check into a conceal carry permit. You will want something that fits your hand well and nothing larger than a 9mm due to recoil. A .380 will work fine also and has same frontal mass as a 9mm but a bit less recoil, heck even a .22lr will work. You may find that you actually enjoy shooting as many do. See if they have any ranges where you can rent a gun to shoot at the range in FL, this way you can see how different ones feel and get used to the recoil of such weapon

                        Check out

                        floridagun.com

They have a range, rent hand guns and rifles for range use and have all types of training. If they are not in your area then maybe another one is. Good Luck and stay safe

You may want to arm up anyway so if the fecal matter hits the fan, now we have FDA guards shooting 15 year olds. When will it end...only when we force it to stop. Funny that NBC did not have this on the front page hmmmm

DemonSeed, believe me, I didn't deserve any of it. When we first split up I was in a women's shelter in Palm Bay and got counseling there. I learned that I had a pattern of being abused from early childhood. I also was treated for severe depression in a clinical trial study during the divorce. Who wouldn't be depressed. I have always been known for having lots of friends (ex had none) and being very charitable and helpful to the less fortunate. I pulled myself up from a very impoverished background to earning two degrees at night school and I went for free. I was a teenager when I got together with him and I was always one of those people who only see the good in others. I had a real knack for not seeing the bad. My family, neighbors and friends all warned me about him back then, but I saw him differently. As soon as we married, he suddenly hated all my friends and I eventually drifted away from them. Just recently I have reconnected with almost all of them and to a person, they all told me they never liked him. I know a lot more about myself and about people thanks to counseling. People who were abused usually end up with an abuser and that's exactly what happened to me. One of my friends calls my ex an "evil genius" which I think he really is. He now has an investment company and, God help us all, will probably be ripping people off right and left ala Bernie Madoff style. My ex has no conscience about that. Was I secretly the b*tch from hell online here trying to fool all of you? Well no. In fact I was a doormat, but no more.

It would seem to me that you are a doormat no longer. That should at least mean something. BTW, men who abuse women are not men. Power hungry males in this society might go far, because society equates strength with dominance. The dominant are given respect. I can attest to this first hand. But a real man should never put his hands on a woman. Unless she asks for it. (in a good way) ;0

Grats on your triumphs and I hope it continues.

People you are jumping to conclusions. Our Justice system will let him live off the taxes you pay into the system because should he get out there are more jobs for judges, lawyers, clerks, etc.. It's Ok though sine we pay all those expenses for this piece of dirt. It would be cruel to kill him, but never ever does anyone think that the victims hav no rights at all anymore.

You probably right, it had to exist a really good, conclusive evidence that can be proved without doubt that he committed murder. Long road and expensive. Shame..

Don't need a body to prove murder and if his confession goes into evidence he gets convicted.

"Thou shall not covet thy neighbor's wife", one of the ten commandments and it was broken. I don't condone her possible murder but she got what she asked for! People think they can just push God aside and do as they please without recourse....well here is a prime example of what can happen! The only people I feel sorry for are their families and the heartache they are enduring because of bad decisions....... As for the hubby, because of her sin he broke another commandment "thou shall not kill". He'll get life in prison and become another statistic and burden on our tax dollars, just like the rest of the crooks in our country! Anyone with a moral IQ can see how not following the Bible's teaching is destroying our country!

I know) and probably with a few kills but a religious fanatics ohh boy.. We are talking genocide... mass murder... using the most elegant tool available: Speech and bible...

Nicole Brown Simpson wrote letters before her death which stated if anything happened to her it would be OJ that did it. Well, we know how she ended up and poor Ron Goldman too. With expensive lawyers, OJ got off. Nicole Brown Simpson has been six feet under all these years and now the taxpayers are supporting OJ in jail in another matter. It's well known that rich people get off (except Phil Spector) and poor people don't. My prediction is the guy in this case won't get away with it, body or not.

Actually, if you translate it from biblical Hebrew, the command is, "you will not commit murder." That is very different from "you will not kill." And she asked for a DIVORCE. It doesn't say anywhere that she was seeing anyone. Someone CLAIMED to be the boyfriend but they don't talk about any proof. And Jamie--didn't Jesus say in Mathew, "why do you pluck at the straw in your brother's eye while you ignore the log in your own eye? First remove the log from your own eye so that you can better see to HELP remove the straw in your brother's eye. Seems like you should be cleaning up your own house before passing judgement on (as my Scottish cousins would say), "things ya ken nothin' aboot!

Sure, be angry with her for breaking her marriage-vows, but men, in particular, need to relearn that adage about two things of a man that you don't screw around with. #1. His Land. #2. His wife.
