A South Florida man arrested in the murder of his vanished wife allegedly confessed to killing her, but didn’t say where her body is, Miami-Dade police said Monday.
Jesus Maqueira, 54, who was arrested Friday on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated stalking in the death of Raquel Maria Calderin, 42, is being held on no bond, online jail records said Monday night.
"Maqueira did not tell detectives where the body is, what he did with the body. He just said he killed her,” Miami-Dade police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said.
An arrest affidavit said that when Maqueira was confronted by investigators about his inability to explain the evidence against him, he allegedly replied, “Look, I killed her, so take me to jail.”
He laughed at investigators when they pressed him but refused to provide details, according to the affidavit.
Maqueira’s attorney, Adrián Nuñez, could not immediately be reached for comment Monday.
Detectives said that five months ago, Calderin filed to divorce Maqueira, her husband of more than 20 years. Maqueira showed up at Gloria Floyd Elementary School, where Calderin worked as a custodian, and begged her to drop the divorce proceedings, detectives said.
After their verbal dispute, Calderin became very upset and was sent home at 9:30 that night, according to police. She has not been seen since.
"She was on the phone talking to somebody. The phone line went dead. And there hasn’t been activity on the phone line since then,” Zabaleta said. “There hasn't been any activity on her bank accounts. People haven’t seen her, (she) has missed social gatherings.”
As the case was handed to homicide detectives, a man who said he was Calderin’s boyfriend told NBC 6 that he was furious about the police investigation, claiming that no one was doing anything.
But police said they did. They said they put up fliers and followed up on leads, but then the case went cold.
"When you have a missing loved one, you want to find her,” Zabaleta said. “And when you're not getting concrete answers from investigators, you seem to think that nothing’s being done.”
Police began to investigate Maqueira, and said they found from cell phone records that he was in the immediate area of the school when Calderin disappeared.
Police spoke with the couple’s three children as well. Investigators determined that at some point Maqueira tried to “coach” the children about the case, the affidavit said.
But when Maqueira came in for questioning, he gave numerous conflicting statements that were disproven by the children’s statements and the phone records, according to the affidavit. He then allegedly confessed, police said.

This guy is a psycho he confessed to murdering his wife and I wish that they can burn this guy, hopefully the police will find this women's body and hopefully her children will recover from this tragedy how she stayed married for 20 years to someone like this is beyond me unless she was afraid of him all along.
Angels91, you're right. I stayed in a long-term marriage because I was too afraid to leave. My husband told me if I tried to leave or get a divorce "I'll make you wish you'd never been born." He made good on that in ways you couldn't even imagine. We are now divorced ten years and I'm still afraid. He is the kind of person that will let a lot of time go by before he acts so that he won't be suspected if I met with violence. I'm always watching over my shoulder. No, this is not some kind of paranoia - he ALWAYS gets back at people he thinks did him wrong. ALWAYS!
Sounds to me like you should have stayed then. Hope you don't go missing if you do remember it's because you left...wahahahaha
billy6900, I have never regretted the divorce except that I wish I had done it sooner. We married very young and had a long-term marriage. The past ten years without him have been peaceful. No matter what happens in the future, I will always cherish the past ten peaceful years. If I had stayed, I might have ended up in an asylum, so at least that didn't happen. When I first filed for divorce, I got a dog for protection. I had never had a dog before. That little girl was one of the best things that ever happened to me. I lost her a year ago. She was such a joy, so between having her and peace at last, it's been good.
You should get another dog. There are plenty who need homes. Kat, it sounds like you did the right thing. Abuse is committed for too long on women who feel they have no other options.
DemonSeed - right now I'm getting ready to move, so I can't get a dog, but I will just as soon as I'm settled. I feed three feral cats right now because I love animals and I also feed a deer. But, there was never any pet better than my doggie and I can't wait to get another. Of course, it will be a rescue. I know I did the right thing. It hurts to talk about what happened, but if it opens the eyes of someone on here and helps them, then it's worth it. It's pretty embarrassing and painful to think about what I went through. As a former model, a professional and well-educated person, things like this aren't supposed to happen to someone like me, but you see it does. Abuse happens in any background.
Torture him til he talks. Scumbag!
Sure.....sure the guy's lawyer is 'unavailable for comment' ...the jerkoff's too busy counting his money!
PRO FREEDOM~ Waterboarding is inhumane, lets just send the drones out...I'm hearing thats more acceptable!
They both seem to get the job done.
Better keep an EYE out on this guy: he seems to be a COCK EYED optimist that he will get away with his crime. (corny, I know, best I can do right now, tho).
Hey, drag the pond. That's where Norman Bates dumped his last victims !!
I still say allow the Police to shoot trash and scum ON sight !! Maybe an aggregate daily bag limit !!
She was alligator bait a long time ago, more than likely...
Where's Dr. Kavorkian when they need him.
Sounds like she got her punishment a little early for commiting adultry. She was a liar, cheat, disloyal and thats just from what the article said. Now he will get his for being a murderer.
Can't people just get along?
Desert: Where in the article did you read that? What paragraph? Because the article I'm reading says nothing like that.
Her boyfriend was upset with the investigation.....who the F are you anyway. She's married and shouldn't have a boyfriend. He's scum and so is she period. Seems to me this lady is a lying cheating piece of crap. He should have taken the boyfriend out too...make it a two for one.
Duh! Do you think maybe she left the killer sooner than this story is telling us? She was probably trying to get away from him long ago. You can be married to someone and not be with them. Right? Do I need to explain all the scenarios that are possible? The murderer probably hasn't signed the divorce paperwork for quite awhile. You my dear, just have a problem with women. You are quick to say bad things about a dead woman. Be careful with that.
This waste entered the country by the Cuban Adjustment, with a long history of domestic violence .. These are the immigrants that we wanted...NO.
Hang him by his balls! He'll talk.
He has been a manipulative twerp all his life. He enjoys being cocky. Twenty years ago, he had to manipulate and control a young lady to have a woman in his life because the women his age knew better.
Glad you know this guy so well...you related somehow or just speculating.
Speculation my dear. It doesn't take much to understand the mentality of a 34 year old man tied to a 22 year old woman. I've lived enough years to have known and seen these types of relationships. Can't you tell he is cocky by his comments to the authorities?
McLisamc maybe you should stop speculating. My husabnd is 12 years older than me and we are happily married with 2 kids and get along great, our age has never been a factor in our relationship. Not sure how their age plays into him being a murderer but they are not one in the same so please keep your speculations to yourself.
His joke is on the judicial system. While everyone else is screaming Im innocent, this man is saying he did it. The only drawback with this is; you cant charge him with a crime without a body. The joke iis on the system. No body , no crime... ask the boyfriend where she went :)
Yes he can be charged and prosecuted without a body based on his confession... Although I have been reading that is difficult to prosecute....
Scott Peterson. Death Row. It can be and has been done without locating a body.
I'm not sure why people think there has to be a body to prove murder. That hasn't been the case for many years. The Wikipedia article is very enlightening:
So the boyfriend wants "concrete" answers. Could be a lead...
she's Gator Bait ! Gator Bait ! sorry I couldn't resist .....
Cheating is a dangerous game to play...
Is this a confession or a coersion? Was his lawyer present. It sounds somewhat suspiscious to me?
Probably killed her and then dumped her in the swamps. When we drove through the Everglades you could see lots of side roads that I bet are not traveled frequently. The wild animals will take care of eliminating the body. Doesn`t mean they could not eventually find piece part bones but bones found that would would take years to identify as they would fall to the bottom of the analysis pile.
Ah F him, let the inmates beat it out of him.
RR-Brandon, FL
I'm sure the inmates could do the job.
Kat from Kings & Bloomingdale
It probably has to do with control. Yes, I killed her, but you can't find her - another slap at the family from a deranged idiot!
I see a different thing here. I see a CHEATING WIFE, married for 20 years, knows that she can file for divorce and get everything this guy worked for his entire life. Not to mention $400.00 to $800.00 a month for child support for each kid and alimony. I can see why he would off her. The courts need to get away from this "only the mother can raise the kid" mentality, and make cheating a felony.
jim overlin - you are so wrong. I got divorced in FL. In the beginning my ex got away with every rotten thing he tried to do to me. He had run off with our young son and got custody of him at a hearing I was never notified of. I was ordered to pay 670.90 a month in child support. My ex made sure I didn't see my child for five years. Ex told the court he was indigent and couldn't pay the mediation fee of 75.00. The fact is he is a self-employed day trader and personal investment counselor making 160,000 a year ten years ago. I was a working mom earning 36,000 at that time, still he wanted to put me in jail - for what I don't know. I set out to prove his lies and hired a PI. Turns out he had just bought a new 62,000 Jag and my atty subpoenaed the paperwork that showed his income on the financing papers. In court, he refused to admit he owned the Jag even though we had the papers to prove it. To make matters worse, he then tried to bribe the judge! You don't try to bribe an honest judge and the judge made it known to all parties what my husband had done. Two weeks after the court ordered ex not to encumber the family home, he did just that - took out a mortgage pocketing the cash. He was found in contempt of a court order, but nothing really happened. He liquidated all our bank accounts and was ordered to pay me half. He had taken off with all our possessions, including my clothes. The only thing I had was my car on tires so bald the steel belts were coming thru. The court ordered a master to sell the marital home and I would get the remaining pittance in equity, but I also had to pay the realtor's commission and back taxes owed as well as the special master's fee. Ex was ordered to pay me rent for living in the marital home. At the master's hearing, my husband was so obnoxious that the judge really read him the riot act - by then the judges were all on to him. A few days after the divorce hearing, the judge (whom ex tried to bribe) issued an order, unheard of so shortly after hearing, basically giving everything to me. So it looked like I won the war. Not so, ex is far more clever than that. As soon as the judge's order came down, ex filed for bankruptcy naming me a creditor. I went before the bky judge without an atty and the judge ordered one to represent me. Ex's bky was dismissed EXCEPT for what he owed me. Not that I'm ever going to see a dime. By the way, my ex cheated on me all thru the marriage. In the end, I got basically nothing but just being rid of him is enough for me. God will take care of the rest.
...
He " confessed ".
For some reason the cops want to button this one up in a hurry.
...
Women, better to stay single than marry some of these knuckle draggers. You can make it on your own.
If you think all of the "weirdos" are in Florida, just remember, they probably came from your home state considering that most of the people living in Florida escaped from the Great White North. Guess they forgot to leave their "weirdness" at home.
