I am an Obama supporter, but I would agree with most of your observations. The speech was mostly boilerplate and things that had been said repeatedly for the past five years (some going back to the first campaign.) It was completely lackaluster until the gun control talk at the end. The gun control screed generated so much response that it had to be unintended since it overshadowed the rest of his speech.

Since the purpose of the SOTU speech is to lay out a proposed agenda for the next year as well as to use the "bully pulpit" to advocate for Congressional action on specific items, I guess it was about average as these things go.
