Cops: Tourist is dragged into alley and raped in midtown Manhattan

View more videos at: http://nbcnewyork.com.

A woman visiting New York City was raped in an alleyway near a nightclub in midtown early Sunday morning, police said.

The 20-year-old woman from Australia left the club, Lavo, and got into a cab, but fought with the driver and exited the taxi after a short distance, police said.

She had just exited the taxi on East 58th Street at about 3:30 a.m. when she was grabbed from behind.

She was then dragged into an alleyway, where she was sexually assaulted, police said.

According to a law enforcement official, the woman then got into a second cab and texted a friend that she had just been raped. Police were called and met her at another location where she was headed on the west side.

Because she was so intoxicated, the official says, the woman cannot recall the exact location where she was raped.

People who live and work in the area were surprised about the attack.

"It's a good neighborhood, it's a high-class neighborhood," said Joe Agate, a delivery person who works near the nightclub.

He noted that it's usually very quiet when he works in the early morning.

Police have released a sketch of the suspect, who's described as being in his mid- to late-30s, about 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 190 pounds.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.

My son's coworker was dragged into an ally, luckily SHE had a gun strapped to her thigh! No rape occurred!

Though I am not sure I would condone someone as intoxicated as she was running around with a firearm. Another good way to prevent being attacked is to not be wasted without a copilot. It is sad but this world is just not safe enough to do that.

This woman, if she had had a gun, was so drunk she would have shot the cabbie, herself, another innocent bystander and the rapist probably would be armed right now. (I'm a gun owner. Put a lid on it!)

Lady got drunk and stupid. The rape was a crime; hope they get the rapist.

Once again MSLSD is afraid to give the possible race of the perp. The description they did give would match about 5 million males in a 10 mile radius. Why is it considered politically incorrect to give a race when looking for a rapist?

This is not to say that people should not exercise good judgment and common sense, but this is 100% the rapist's fault. She could be drunk out of her mind and walking naked down the street and she still does not deserve or asked to be raped. She is not at fault here. He is. He made the decision to forcibly penetrate another human being's body with his own. He chose to do that. He chose to commit a horrific act upon another person. He chose to committ a felony.

Being drunk and stupid is not a crime; rape is.

So to summarize this thread so far. This is Obama's fault. The drunk woman, who got in a fight with a cabbie and didn't even know where she was, should have been packing a gun. MSNBC is nefariously hiding the race of the rapist despite displaying a big picture. This is Bloomberg's fault because an Australian tourist (who otherwise certainly would have packed a gun in her luggage) wasn't carrying a gun. MSNBC is wrong to cover a rape in New York because people are also raped in other cities.

Well I'm surprised, the suspect sketch must be wrong, it just had to be a white, christian, who's never committed a crime. And didn't he also have a fully automatic 50 caliber machine gun with 100,000 thousand rounds of ammo and body armor and tactical gear and teargas and gas mask and cammo clothing five hand guns, and all the guns had 500 round clips. Man I ought to be a writer or reporter for msn or one of the other mainstream media puppets who are totally controlled and told word for word what to say & report on !

We should all be shocked, or at least disappointed. Our city streets should be safe to walk down and our taxi cabs should be safe to ride in.

Once a week I lead a discussion group of foreign scholars who want to improve their English skills. I have learned a lot from them, but what sticks with me most is how much their cultures still have a great deal of control over their actions. People are expected to work, treat others with respect, marry before having children, and a host of other things that we seem to have forgotten.

What has happened to us is "Political Correctness".

If parents aren't e-mailing this article to their HS / College daughters, you're all stupid! Seems that most of the above idiotic comments have something to say about the perp being "Obama" (all too common Tea-Party rant), "I Hate NY"(yeah - this doesn't happen anywhere else!!), "It was entirely the Rapist Fault" (I do agree on that 1), "She should've had a gun!" (the dumbest comment of all - a drunk woman w/ a gun!!), but I don't think any of ya are going to educate your daughters, or other similar aged females within your family about the consequences of women drinking so blindly stupid and making wrong choices at 3:30 in the morning by yourself! WARNING: There are bad people everywhere - - we run into them everyday, especially if you live in a big city! Avoid dumb situations, Be aware of your surroundings and mostly...don't be so F***-g stupid and vulnerable!! Follow those rules, about the worse thing that can happen to you in NYC is get splashed on at a street corner after a snow storm!

myname123: This thread seems to have a balance between posters saying that MSNBC is covering up the perp's race and posters who are saying the rapist: looks like Obama/could be Obama's son (oh, wait, you said that)/is a "sub-human black," etc. So I'll let the people on both sides of that divide to fight it out as to whether MSNBC really covered up the suspect's race. Singletermlimitsforeveryone, first of all, you need to realize that single term limits do NOT, contrary to elitist political hipster belief, fix the inward problems of how government works, which is the FAR more important thing to be concerned with dealing with the government, and second, did you ever notice that you printed your message twice on here? The question that I raise in protest to this stupid decision is actually a simple one and that is do you want to have one idiot that will lessen the damage politically in numerous terms or would you rather have a string of idiots that are in their political office for a single term that will cause far MORE damage in all of those terms together than the single idiot? Were common sense to speak here, I would not only choose to deal with the single idiot but I would also change the way that people are elected in this country, which is the second REAL problem with how things are supposed to work in this country.

However, as for YOU, davefromanapointca, you honestly deserve to be pimp smacked for being such an OCD race tard. You do not realize that you are playing in the whole game of race baiting and the New World Order has you trapped like a fish on a fishing line, hook, line, sinker, and you are the foolish sucker that is stupid enough to take the bait. Why not just simply try to find the suspect and charge him with the crime period? This is what the concept of true justice is all about, sir. Also, the woman is not entirely out of the clear when it comes to criminal charges being filed. This woman also needs to be charged with, at the very least, the misdemeanors of being publicly intoxicated and disorderly conduct. I know that it might seem harsh to do so to her but, hopefully, this woman will be smart enough to learn to never pick up the Lucifer brew ever again and begin learning to have some self-defense techniques (without becoming a heterophobic man hater) and, contrary to what the pacifist (read psuedo-peace activist) weenie Ken said, to learn to pick up and use a gun (but when she is SOBER and not on booze and/or drugs) and/or to use other weapons in self-defense.

marywhatever, the concept of a legal drinking age is about as effective as ratings on video games, television shows, and films, and about as useless as that particular concept, not to mention that it is also as well enforced as the points system on "Whose Line Is It Anyway," so please spare me your concept about a "legal" drinking age. I would have my own solution to the problem but it might result in the deaths of numerous people who will protect the status quo, but I can assure you that it would COMPLETELY eradicate drunk driving as well and that is an undeniable fact.

Rockyroad, I know, right?

Sounds crazy, but that's what it sounds like whenever people blame guns for "gun violence". The blame falls only on the individual. Whomever commited the crime is responsible not the whatever.

As for her carrying a gun... A foreigner can't come to visit on vacation and get a Conceal Weapons Permit, which she would have needed to be carrying a gun around. Even if they could the majority of places don't let you carry a firarm into bars/clubs.

To the people saying that if she had a gun she wouldn't be raped. Aside from the fact that she was an our of the country tourist, she probably wouldn't have had a gun on her even if it was legal to do so in NYC. Also, pretty much any place that does allow concealed carry or open carry does not allow you to do so while drinking or being drunk. So if she had shot this guy defending herself, she would have been charged with illegal carry of a weapon while intoxicated. How about, not being drunk in place you don't know without anyone being with you.

rockyroad- although i don't agree with bloomberg on alot of things, this ban on large sodas(no need for 20 oz) was to prevent them gangbangers from carrying their pistols in them. the new fad was to carry your pistol in a cup(looks pretty innocent)can't stop on suspicion,so i think it helps a little in that regard. These gang members need to be dealt with,we will see a LARGE DECREASE in gun violence if that is the ONLY thing we do.

But handguns are banned in New York City unless you have a specific license to carry one, particulalry regarding individuals with criminal records.

exactly my point illuminatus-bans don't work so they looked at banning something else to help, when the necessary thing is to go after the gangs who bring up the gun violence stats. Refusing to address the real problem by banning things will only get everything under the sun banned and the problem will sill be there.

Bans do work if they're universal. How hard is it to buy a gun in the South and transport it up the Federal interstates and into these cities that do have bans? It's stupid logic like yours that impedes true progress in regards to these types of agendas. If bans on guns were in EVERY city, you would definitely see a lot less of this happening. Please understand I'm not saying it should happen, but I'm so tired of your short-sighted comments that make no sense whatsoever.

                  NCwolv,

Short sighted? Do you say that while knowing that most gangs get their guns from their connections in other countries? Hispanic gangs get a lot of their weaponry from the Mexican Mofia, and many black gangs also get their guns from Mexico and especially South America. A majority of the guns in Mexico where they are outlawed, come from South America. You would have to ban guns on this planet to make sure criminals didnt get them. Id rather have my neighbors armed than the neighborhood gangs.

                  Hey NCwolv,

If one bans guns in every city rest assured that every innocent, law-abiding citizen would now be vulnerable to criminal attack. When will you realize gun bans HAVE NOT and WILL NOT remove a single weapon from the criminals' hands. Hello, they don't obey the law. It's stupid logic like yours that supports these types of agendas. Besides, after you surrender all your weapons, who will protect you from your government?

The cops aren't supposed to prevent crime, they supposed to catch the perp. As for the crime itself? cops are all for it. Otherwise - what would they do? Eat donuts and shake down drug dealers?

She's a tourist! Not everyone who travels, travels with a buddy and picking up acquaintances to act as buddies can be just a dangerous. And as for that comment in the article - "Because she was so intoxicated, the official says, the woman cannot recall the exact location where she was raped" I would think most tourists would have difficulty recalling exact locations in a strange city, sober or intoxicated. What a snide comment to make to the general public.

The entire incident sounds like BS. The first cab can be tracked down and the location she was dropped found. If she actually took a cab and didn't simply get into someone's car. Either way the second cab can be located and where they made the pickup found out.

But she gets into the second cab, drives across town, THEM calls a friend? Too drunk to even know where she was? Then I'd say she was too drunk to id anyone either.

So it comes down to she was incredibly stupid in her conduct that night. Just too much bs in her story.

Of course, blame her rape on being drunk. Or maybe her skirt was too short, right? Clearly she caused her own rape right?

                      R. Scalzo,

Lets see, if you were just raped, wouldnt you want to get as far away from the area as possible? Of course she hoped in a cab. Then once she was safe in one, she called the cops to report the crime. Being too drunk to remember doesnt mean she doesnt deserve justice for what happened to her. If that was the case, we could never help out most college students in the US.

                      Look Chris, we agreed. Progress.

I think I.Scalzo is saying....he thinks it's a false report and not that it's a victim's fault. As usual, the sorry a$$ reporting doesn't say whether there was a rape kit taken or if she even filed an actual report. But, he's right, there seems to be a lot of B.S. in her story that just doesn't make sense. If she was raped, I hope they catch the perp! If she wasn't raped, I hope they catch her!

Can't we impose some kind of limitations on them, or maybe do background checks before someone is allowed to have one? This is just getting out of control. The world would be a safer place for women like this one without all the penis'!!!

There is definately something wrong with this. How does one know if she's telling the truth? She's in another country, fighting with cabbys, doesn't know where she was raped, drunk out of her mind and alone. Its a bad combination. Did anyone notice she's underaged? Something is definately weird. She could have had Cabby #2 take her to a police station or hospital, but she went somewhere else -- Ahh credibility issues. If you're a black "looking" man (undescribed by the media in words) in NYC, you had better hide in the storage shed, or risk being snatched off the street because a drunk white tourist has cried rape -- here we go.

College aged girl in news country getting into fights with cabbies and being completely wasted. You do know that this situation is quite common right Genus2011? When I was in college, a lot of our foreign students were like this. Same as when I went to Spain one summer with my college. We got drunk, argued with our cabbies sometimes, and had no idea where we were because we were in a completely different country. And if you dont think people under 21 drink, then you must have never gone to high school. What she did is quite common, and does not mean she deserves to be raped, or that she is lying. She might be, because you never know, but we believe her until it is proved to be false.

I agree with MrBurns. From everything I've read and heard, it is the NYPD's "stop and frisk" policy that has had the largest effect.

The "gun control nuts" should be lauding NYPD for restricting their freedom of movement but making them safer.

                                        New York City crime stats prove it;
Gun control does not reduce the number of murders or violent crimes.

NYC's murder rate is higher than the national average (murders per 100,000 people, NYC; 7.3/100,000 National;7/100,000)
NYC's violent crime rate is MUCH higher than the national average (637.9/100,000 versus 553.5/100,000)

The only stats where NYC is better than the national average is in property crimes...
So while your apartment might not get robbed or your car may not get stolen, you're more likely to get robbed or murdered...
or raped by some thug while trying to get back to your hotel...

                                          #7.10 - Thu Feb 14, 2013 10:00 PM EST

Funny thing about crime stats...they don't tell you the whole story.
there are more murders committed in NYC than in my state, South Carolina. Yup...more people are murdered in that overpopulated megalopolis than in the entire state of South Carolina.

Now if you compare the number of crimes committed per square mile to pretty much any other place...
NYC consists of 304.8 square miles of land (+/- following the last storm...)...which means a 1.5 murders per square mile....

It's not the murder rate per 100,000 people statistic that should be looked at, but the density of crimes, the actual concentration of crime per square mile...

It is one reason I don't go to NYC and never plan to go...there's nothing there that interests me.

Other than the fact she got drunk and possibly aggressive ( she fought with the taxi driver and got out), nothing is clear. If she was raped indeed ( the article doesn't provide a confirmation, just her claim and she was drunk), probably a vagabond did it, taking advantage of her situation (completely wasted). I doubt anyone will learn a lesson from this, tomorrow there will be more people filling the bars and drinking until they don't know who they are!

We make countless choices every day in life, so many without a second thought. Some expose us to risk more than others. While we can't prevent every negative thing from happening to us, we can do a great deal to avoid many high risk situations altogether. Knowing Evil is in the world, which prey's upon naive, unsuspecting, and the unprepared, is important. It is always looking for those who don't expect danger, aren't paying attention, are distracted, the vulnerable in specific situations. It minions hope victims won't know how to avoid or know what to do, when faced with such threats.

Only those who choose to do evil upon others, are totally responsible for their actions. Never the victims they prey upon.So every potential victim needs both realize they can be proactive, and then take steps to reduce their risk of encountering any predators.

Common sense, judiciously practiced, is the key.The more one educates themselves, knows how to avoid the things which helps create dangerous situations, or if faced with one, the better off they are. There is no excuse for foolishness in these modern days. Because failure to make wise choices can endanger not just ourselves, but our loved ones. And exposes us to those looking for any weaknesses, poor choices or other mistakes people commonly make. For they have learned, and are very good at understanding, how to exploit human nature and the common man, woman and child. So we must exercise better judgment, care more for each other, by working together to stop the spread of evil's work. That begins with more compassion, empathy and less judgment for victims.

I agree. While it is never the rape victims fault, there are steps one can take to protect themselves. It never works one hundred percent of the time, as evil people will always find ways to do horrible things to people, but this doesnt mean one should not be careful.

Because she was so intoxicated, the official says, the woman cannot recall the exact location where she was raped.

I suppose the NRA will assert that the answer to this problem is to give this woman a gun so she can shoot her attacker. If she remembers how to point the gun and where the trigger is.

Having a gun while drunk is bad. But if there were more armed good people, the bad people would think twice.

There sure is a gorgeous universe beyond the creations on this planet. Despite the awful things certain folks do to their fellow beings so often seen and heard in the news, others are engaged in accomplishing great things to help those in need all over the place. It just doesn't make the head lines:-) I have come to conclude it is sort of like, don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.

I must confess, there are times I wish fairness in life were real, that people would get their just rewards instantly, so true justice existed. Oh well, life moves on, but it makes a great teacher, especially for choices and consequences. And everyone is on their own learning curve no matter how much we want them to speed up the pace!

Unfortunately, in NYC there is near 'zero' chance of a good Samaritan with a firearm coming to your help if you are ever being assaulted, robbed, or in this case raped. The most help you are likely get is a call to 911... and a wait for the police and ambulance to arrive.

As for NYC the criminals.... Have they turned in all their 16 round magazines? Have they lining up to go through criminal back ground checks each time they pass a gun around? Are they putting only 7 rounds in their 10 round magazines? Are they all registering their semi-auto rifles?

This is why you continue going political on pretty much any and all your posts even though it has "zero" to do with the subject. Yet you think its so cool.

It's like you write something so stupid "just" to see what type of reaction you'll get. Then when you get the reaction you're hoping for, you pour salt in the wound to get your rocks off even more. You know, like an addict.

                                                Personally, I'd be embarrassed.

If anyone knows anything, they'd quickly realize that NYC is the biggest city in the U.S. and for its size, has one of the lowest crime rates. No, we don't need guns and don't want them. Crime happens but having more guns will only increase crime. There's something wrong with this story and I don't believe it. Not that crime doesn't happen here but things to add up. Billions of dollars are made by tourism here and it's one of the world's most visited places. Unless you've been here and know the place, you've got no place talking crap. Nobody ever said "all" the violence has stopped here. It never will. We live in the real world.

If good guys would stop wanting more and more guns, the gun manufacturers would stop making them, and the supply would dry up. This would mean that it would become even more expensive for the bad guys to get a gun, as those that are available would be worth more. Think supply and demand. Drop demand, and the supply will shrivel. It is the demand spurred on by a Black President that has gotten more guns available to the bad guys. Think about it.

@Think Wise ... I'm with you. There seems to be something wrong. According to the radio reports, she claimed that she exited the cab and was immediately grabbed and forced into an alley. The timing just seems so coincidental. She gets into a fight that happens to result in her getting out of the cab at exactly the place where someone is looking to commit rape? I mean, it can happen, but combined with the location, E 58th St, it just sounds odd.

But, then, it sounds as if she can't recall exactly what happened so maybe the actual facts of the rape, if they're even known, make more sense.

We need to move to a 10 point color scale where 0 is pink white and 10 is dark black. So Mexicans and Orientals would be in the 3 to 5 range and a tan white person would be about 2.

What does race have to do with this? He is a freaking rapist. When NBC posted the article on the two women getting shot at the Delaware Courthouse, at least three people were irked at the lack of info on the perpetrator. They were posting crap like it is a "black guy in black outfit" "black guy with nappy hair and big lips". Turns out it was a 69 year old WHITE grandfather.

What is it with people? they hoping that only blacks or people of color commit crimes? That only they are in gangs? That only they rape? That is so far from the truth it is pathetic.

The police description should include some reference to complexion/skin tone at the very least. "Race," too, IMHO, although there is indeed a legacy of prejudice and just plain knuckle-headedness on that score. The subject should have features egregiously identifying his race. And, of course, "black" will always be muddled with "Latino." I wonder if the NYC police description left off race or complexion, or rather the writers/editors at NBC News. (I'm dark skinned black in my 50's, medium build, and I was once approached by a NYC cop while standing with a rail-thin black tween nearly white in paleness and a foot taller than me. The cop said he approached us because we matched an outstanding suspect description. I chuckled and asked him which one of us. He looked befuddled for a second and admitted he didn't know. As we say here in the Big Apple, go figure!)

Spiderman replies "No, I have to repair my web spinner." So, Superman rings a few more of his super hero friends and they're all busy. They're shouldn't even be called animals because they're much worse and should be punished with extremity. Her life has been destroyed and every second of his remaining life should be punishment and torture to the extreme. Otherwise these bastards are going to continue doing these highly immoral and inhuman acts.

Much of the problems are gang and drug related. So if you aren't into buying street drugs and gangs and don't hang out on street corners you are fine. USA is safe if you are careful and know how to act in public. Being a female, drunk, alone, in NYC, as a tourist is a great way to get taken advantage of. Male or female.

Danger lurks in every Country, and there are ways to avoid this if many tourist would just follow simple rules. No female, should be getting in a cab, alone, at 2 or 3am in the morning, ANYWHERE!! Rapist come in all shapes, sizes, and RACES. Rape isn't just a black man's tool, it is most definitely ANY MAN's tool used as a control measure in order to subdue women in order to get what they want. I'm sick of all you racist always bringing race into this, when many of you haven't even visited prisons within your own community to see what the percentages are, and who in fact are committing such offenses. The days of old are surely changing, and the so-called PURE WHITE MAN is just as much an ANIMAL as you call the Black Man!! Funny is not quite the word I'd use, but I do remember one female who when drunk fessed up to having repeatedly masturbated to that scene (to the point where the VCR tape was grainy) in "The Accused" where Jody Foster gets gang raped in a bar and she noticed that she only bolted out of the bar when the guys in the bar were chanting for "needle d**k! needle d**k!" to get a turn.

People are warped, and a lot of them have minds that dwell in really dark places.
