A woman visiting New York City was raped in an alleyway near a nightclub in midtown early Sunday morning, police said.
The 20-year-old woman from Australia left the club, Lavo, and got into a cab, but fought with the driver and exited the taxi after a short distance, police said.
She had just exited the taxi on East 58th Street at about 3:30 a.m. when she was grabbed from behind.
She was then dragged into an alleyway, where she was sexually assaulted, police said.
According to a law enforcement official, the woman then got into a second cab and texted a friend that she had just been raped. Police were called and met her at another location where she was headed on the west side.
Because she was so intoxicated, the official says, the woman cannot recall the exact location where she was raped.
People who live and work in the area were surprised about the attack.
"It's a good neighborhood, it's a high-class neighborhood," said Joe Agate, a delivery person who works near the nightclub.
He noted that it's usually very quiet when he works in the early morning.
Police have released a sketch of the suspect, who's described as being in his mid- to late-30s, about 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 190 pounds.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.

This woman, if she had had a gun, was so drunk she would have shot the cabbie, herself, another innocent bystander and the rapist probably would be armed right now. (I'm a gun owner. Put a lid on it!)

This is not to say that people should not exercise good judgment and common sense, but this is 100% the rapist's fault. She could be drunk out of her mind and walking naked down the street and she still does not deserve or asked to be raped. She is not at fault here. He is. He made the decision to forcibly penetrate another human being's body with his own. He chose to do that. He chose to commit a horrific act upon another person. He chose to committ a felony.

So to summarize this thread so far. This is Obama's fault. The drunk woman, who got in a fight with a cabbie and didn't even know where she was, should have been packing a gun. MSNBC is nefariously hiding the race of the rapist despite displaying a big picture. This is Bloomberg's fault because an Australian tourist (who otherwise certainly would have packed a gun in her luggage) wasn't carrying a gun. MSNBC is wrong to cover a rape in New York because people are also raped in other cities.

We should all be shocked, or at least disappointed. Our city streets should be safe to walk down and our taxi cabs should be safe to ride in.
Once a week I lead a discussion group of foreign scholars who want to improve their English skills. I have learned a lot from them, but what sticks with me most is how much their cultures still have a great deal of control over their actions. I would find the cab driver , why were they fighting ? Was he taking her to a spot where she didnt want to go to. Perhaps he was in on it . Luring a female , taking a female to a certain spot to be taken to be raped. If She was drunk , she could be a very good target .

dr821. occurred to me, too. there are no "alleys" in manhattan. the immediate fight with the cabbie, causing her to be discharged in what is a very safe place (ever since mayor guiliani cleaned the city up), together with her call to police in a whole other neighborhood, not remembering where she was, etc. certainly raises questions.

My wife & I went to NY a couple of years ago and were staying at a hotel across the street from Madison Square Garden...crappy hotel by the way...one of the front desk workers recommended that we be off the street by 9 PM and to stay within 2 blocks either side of the hotel after dark. Said that it was just too dangerous. Just saying.

marywhatever, the concept of a legal drinking age is about as effective as ratings on video games, television shows, and films, and about as useless as that particular concept, not to mention that it is also as well enforced as the points system on "Whose Line Is It Anyway," so please spare me your concept about a "legal" drinking age. I would have my own solution to the problem but it might result in the deaths of numerous people who will protect the status quo, but I can assure you that it would COMPLETELY eradicate drunk driving as well and that is an undeniable fact.

As for her carrying a gun... A foreigner can't come to visit on vacation and get a Conceal Weapons Permit, which she would have needed to be carrying a gun around. Even if they could the majority of places don't let you carry a firarm into bars/clubs.

While I completely agree with you that this is in no way the woman's fault, and the rapist is solely to blame. I would just like to point out that being drunk in public is in fact a crime. But I dont think she's gunna be charged.
Any tourist needs to be aware of their surroundings. America has its horrible parts just like any other country. I know that this neighborhood was thought to be good, so its just a horrible thing that happened to this woman.

To the people saying that if she had a gun she wouldn't be raped. Aside from the fact that she was an our of the country tourist, she probably wouldn't have had a gun on her even if it was legal to do so in NYC. Also, pretty much any place that does allow concealed carry or open carry does not allow you to do so while drinking or being drunk. So if she had shot this guy defending herself, she would have been charged with illegal carry of a weapon while intoxicated. How about, not being drunk in place you don't know without anyone being with you.

Short sighted? Do you say that while knowing that most gangs get their guns from their connections in other countries? Hispanic gangs get a lot of their weaponry from the Mexican Mofia, and many black gangs also get their guns from Mexico and especially South America. A majority of the guns in Mexico where they are outlawed, come from South America. You would have to ban guns on this planet to make sure criminals didnt get them. Id rather have my neighbors armed than the neighborhood gangs.

The entire incident sounds like BS. The first cab can be tracked down and the location she was dropped found. If she actually took a cab and didn't simply get into someone's car. Either way the second cab can be located and where they made the pickup found out.
But she gets into the second cab, drives across town, THEM calls a friend? Too drunk to even know where she was? Then I'd say she was too drunk to id anyone either.

When I was in college, a lot of our foreign students were like this. Same as when I went to Spain one summer with my college. We got drunk, argued with our cabbies sometimes, and had no idea where we were because we were in a completely different country. And if you dont think people under 21 drink, then you must have never gone to high school. What she did is quite common, and does not mean she deserves to be raped, or that she is lying. She might be, because you never know, but we believe her until it is proved to be false.

The "gun control nuts" should be lauding NYPD for restricting their freedom of movement but making them safer.

NYC's murder rate is higher than the national average (murders per 100,000 people, NYC; 7.3/100,000 National;7/100,000)
NYC's violent crime rate is MUCH higher than the national average (637.9/100,000 versus 553.5/100,000)
The only stats where NYC is better than the national average is in property crimes...
So while your apartment might not get robbed or your car may not get stolen, you're more likely to get robbed or murdered...
or raped by some thug while trying to get back to your hotel...

there are more murders committed in NYC than in my state, South Carolina. Yup...more people are murdered in that overpopulated megalopolis than in the entire state of South Carolina.
Now if you compare the number of crimes committed per square mile to pretty much any other place...
NYC consists of 304.8 square miles of land (+/- following the last storm...)...which means a 1.5 murders per square mile....
It's not the murder rate per 100,000 people statistic that should be looked at, but the density of crimes, the actual concentration of crime per square mile...
It is one reason I don't go to NYC and never plan to go...there's nothing there that interests me.

Other than the fact she got drunk and possibly aggressive ( she fought with the taxi driver and got out), nothing is clear. If she was raped indeed ( the article doesn't provide a confirmation, just her claim and she was drunk), probably a vagabond did it, taking advantage of her situation (completely wasted). I agree. While it is never the rape victims fault, there are steps one can take to protect themselves. It never works one hundred percent of the time, as evil people will always find ways to do horrible things to people, but this doesnt mean one should not be careful.

Unfortunately, in NYC there is near 'zero' chance of a good Samaritan with a firearm coming to your help if you are ever being assaulted, robbed, or in this case raped. The most help you are likely get is a call to 911... and a wait for the police and ambulance to arrive.

No, we don't need guns and don't want them. Crime happens but having more guns will only increase crime. There's something wrong with this story and I don't believe it. Not that crime doesn't happen here but things to add up. Billions of dollars are made by tourism here and it's one of the world's most visited places. @Think Wise ... I'm with you. There seems to be something wrong. According to the radio reports, she claimed that she exited the cab and was immediately grabbed and forced into an alley. The timing just seems so coincidental. She gets into a fight that happens to result in her getting out of the cab at exactly the place where someone is looking to commit rape? I mean, it can happen, but combined with the location, E 58th St, it just sounds odd.
But, then, it sounds as if she can't recall exactly what happened so maybe the actual facts of the rape, if they're even known, make more sense.

When NBC posted the article on the two women getting shot at the Delaware Courthouse, at least three people were irked at the lack of info on the perpetrator. The police description should include some reference to complexion/skin tone at the very least.
