Cops: Tourist is dragged into alley and raped in midtown Manhattan

A woman visiting New York City was raped in an alleyway near a nightclub in midtown early Sunday morning, police said.

The 20-year-old woman from Australia left the club, Lavo, and got into a cab, but fought with the driver and exited the taxi after a short distance, police said.

She had just exited the taxi on East 58th Street at about 3:30 a.m. when she was grabbed from behind.

She was then dragged into an alleyway, where she was sexually assaulted, police said.

According to a law enforcement official, the woman then got into a second cab and texted a friend that she had just been raped. Police were called and met her at another location where she was headed on the west side.

Because she was so intoxicated, the official says, the woman cannot recall the exact location where she was raped.

People who live and work in the area were surprised about the attack.

"It's a good neighborhood, it's a high-class neighborhood," said Joe Agate, a delivery person who works near the nightclub.

He noted that it's usually very quiet when he works in the early morning.

Police have released a sketch of the suspect, who's described as being in his mid- to late-30s, about 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 190 pounds.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.

Woman in combat, huh? "And can't remember the exact location where she was raped"? Well, some are saying that women don't know their ass from a hole in the ground about the military, so this won't make any diffrence, either - will it?

Not the same Hal,

I'm quite sure that they don't let them get drunk before going into combat.

I'm not sure what military combat privileges have to do with this article but since you brought it up...

Yes, only men are suited for combat since men never drink alcohol to the point of being drunk. I've never figured out how they manage such restraint and control when it comes to alcohol but I wish they'd let everyone in on the secret. Think of all the lives that would be saved.

21 does not mean 21 America! Look at the parents in Stuebenville Ohio who provided alcohol to hundreds of teens who got so intoxicated that they raped and video taped a minor. Not only ruining her life but permanently tarnishing the reputation of the whole community! Great job parents, you all need to be convicted and sentenced to long jail time!

If you have any balls contact the Ohio Attorney general and demand that these parents be charged and sentenced! 1-800-282-0515

21 does mean 21. But the laws of her country (Austrailia)allow her to drink at the age of 18. If she was already drinking at 18 in her country then they would let her follow those rules here. nI think they call it granfathered.

Based on the sketch, it seems like the description could have been more specific than this.

Political Correctness and the Media the great protectors of Blacks have kept them from giving the color of the Rapist, but the sketch gives it away.

It's time for sensible penis registration. Ban high capacity balls, and penises that go off half-cocked.

Sadly we live in an uncivilized world where it is imperative that we take means to provide our own self defense.

More gun control and social programs (paid with more taxes of course out of the pockets of workers) will never fix all the sociopaths out in society.

A bullet into their brain or hanging them will!

Welcome to NY! We're sorry the sex-offender bracelet the offender was wearing did not prevent this occurrence. I'm sure one more man on the street is in the works.

Nothing w as said about the perp having a gun. However, if she had had one, she was so drunk that she would probably have missed and who knows what she would have hit. Don't get me wrong, I am a pro-gun advocate. But guns can be dangerous in the hands in the condition she was in.

I find this interesting...they make absolutely NO mention of a black male in the description, yet the police sketch of the suspect obviously shows an image of a black male. Oh...wait! That might be Racist! What a crock of SH*T!

The drinking age in New York City and all of New York State is 21. I would like to know what happened in the first cab? Just to have all the facts. I in NO WAY put any blame on the victim, just caution to other young ladies that one doesn't leave a bar alone at 3:30 in the morning alone anywhere. Not New York, not Kentucky, not Aruba. Here are the scary and very real statistics regarding rape:

Every 45 seconds someone in the United States is sexually assaulted (1).

1 out of every 7 women currently in college has been raped (2), however, 9 out of 10 women raped on campus never tell anyone about the rape (3).

                        • 1 in 10 men is raped in his lifetime (4), 1 in 7 of those victims will have been assaulted before the age of 18.
                        • More than 61.5% of rapes are never reported to law enforcement (5).
                        • Approximately 28% of rape victims are raped by their husbands, 35% by an acquaintance, and 17% by a relative other than spouse (6).
                        • 74% of sexual assaults are perpetrated by assailants well known to the victim (7).
                        • A female child victim is 7 times more likely to be re-victimized as an adult (8).
                        • Nearly 6 out of 10 sexual assaults occur at the victim’s home or the home of a friend, relative, or neighbor (9).
                        • 1 in 15 rape victims contract a sexually transmitted disease (STD) as a result of being raped (10).
                        • 1 in 15 rape victims become pregnant as a result of being raped (11).
                        • The United States has the world’s highest rape rate of all countries that publish such data- 13 times higher than England and more than 20 times higher than Japan (12).
                        • An American woman is 10 times more likely to be raped than to die in a car crash (13).
                        • 61% of rape victims are females under the age of 18 (14).
                        • Contrary to common belief that violent crime rates are notably lower in rural areas, a recent analysis of location data collected for the 1999 National Women’s Study found that 10.1% of women living in rural areas had experienced a completed rape as compared to 13.6% of women living in urban and suburban communities—hardly a notably lower rate.

I think its time people start taking a little responsibility for their own actions. I would like to know more about the fight she was having with the cabbie. I'm not blaming a rape victim, but if you put yourself into dangerous situations, dangerous things can happen. Glad she didn't have a gun. The cabbie would probably be dead.

how awful to be raped. and how awful to be put through hell afterward. folks are out of control, and i think everyone should consider taking self defense courses, and carry pepper spray. even a pocket knife, paring knife, could do some damage if you learn how. going for the eyes, groin, is a sure way to disable the attacker for time to get away, and scream like you're in fire pit, naked...

Once again people need to re-read the article. It's says that she was a tourist from Australia. As a tourist she can't have a gun. She wouldn't have been able to bring one on the plane and she couldn't have bought one once here. As far as her being 20 and drinking. The legal drinking age is 18 in Australia so she would be grandfathered on her own countries laws.

Your understanding of how laws work is deficient. As is your understanding of the term "grandfathered."

So horrible to hear that she got attacked down under. Of course her likely alcohol-induced stupor had nothing to do with the serious crime of rape, but being drunk, under-age, and, unaware of your surroundings is not the best way to win the survival of the fittest game we all play unaware.

This is the reason that women want the violence against women bill passed in Congress. People are not taking rapes or any assault against women seriously. A lot of post are saying she asked for it being drunk. A lot of posts are saying she should have had a gun (good or bad). And a lot are focusing on the race of the perpetrator. And one even goes as far as saying it could be the President's son. SHE WAS RAPED for God's sake. Where is the compassion for this woman?

I hope to God that no one on this page ever experiences rape (woman or man). It is a horrid experience that strips your soul out of your body. It is an experience that only years of therapy can help you get over and even then little bits of memories will still haunt you. If you are raped you live that rape out day in and day out - intoxicated when it happens or not. Memory is cruel at times. You recoil when a loved one touches you and risk losing a loved one because of that - and at the time you have no idea that your husband or wife is going to leave you because of something that happend to YOU, not them.

It makes me sick that all these people can point blame at the victim because she maybe made some poor choices. It's exactly why women (and men) DON'T report these crimes to the police and exactly why juries regularly fail to convict rapists...because victims are "put on trial" instead of the other way around. Such a shame that people can make jokes about it at all.

While I don't condone anything and make no jokes, I don't think it is wrong to point out that there are consequences to "maybe made some bad choices."

If the perpetrator is ever caught, some dolt will surely suggest that he, also, "made some bad choices."

We should all be able to walk down a street safely, even at 3:30 in the morning. However, we're not. I'm sure they have rapes in Australia, too. She should never have been out that late by herself and in that condition. I agree, it's the rapist's fault, but she put herself in that situation. I'm just thankful she wasn't killed.
