For blizzard-weary Northeast, here comes more snow

Winslow Townson / AP

People dig out their cars in Boston, on Sunday, Feb. 10. A howling storm across the Northeast left the New York-to-Boston corridor shrouded in 1 to 3 feet of snow Saturday, stranding motorists on highways overnight and piling up drifts so high that some homeowners couldn't get their doors open.

The snow-weary Northeast is about to get hit again. And again.

Forecasters say parts of New England — still digging out from an epic snowstorm last weekend — should get several inches of snow Wednesday night, according to weather.com. New York and Philadelphia could see 1 to 3 inches.

Temperatures are not expected to be low enough to cause significant travel problems, said Tom Moore, a meteorologist for The Weather Channel.

More coverage from weather.com

Then, this weekend, a second round: A weather system should deliver light snow to the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Appalachians on Friday, then dust northern New England on Saturday.

Earlier forecast models suggested that the weekend storm could sock the Northeast with high wind and heavy snow, but those models now think a low-pressure system will stay far enough offshore to keep that from happening.

The blizzard last weekend left at least 12 people dead, buried cars along highways, mangled travel across the country and dumped more than 3 feet of snow in some places.

It’s still causing problems: Just Wednesday morning, snow mounds and icy roads slowed firefighters’ response to a house fire in Hampton, Conn., fire officials told NBCConnecticut.com.

The family in the 3,000-square-foot home made it out safely, but it took firefighters six hours to put down the blaze. And a firefighter slipped on ice and broke his ankle.

The mountains out here are/will be getting more snow. Is that going to be headline news also? Or is it news when just the LAME (East) Coast has a couple of inches or a couple of feet of snow? Yeesh, how about some real news, with decent reporting for a change?

I hope no lame coaster gets hurt or killed with this next snow you might be getting. Hey, it's winter time, be prepared, like the boy scouts say. Take some PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for a change. Get your snow shovels, generator, and stock up on some food.

Don't ask for my tax money to help you if you are too lazy and stupid to help yourself. I can just see the whinning comments to follow.

SallyAnn. We New Englanders are a tough lot. The only one I see whining about the snow is YOU.

That say, someone needs to give this storys writer a geography lesson. She talks about New England being due some additional snow tonight, then says PA and NY could be getting a few inches.

I have news for her. PA & NY are NOT a part of New England.

Ah yes, the freeloading lame coast, which coincidentally pays the most in tax dollars to the federal government than any other area of the country. Oh yeah, and they are such freeloaders that they receive less in federal tax money allocations year after year than they pay in, unlike those responsible upstanding southern states which take in more federal monies than they pay. You're an idiot. Oh, let's also make light of the fact that people died during the last blizzard, because eh, it's just a couple feet of snow. Moron.

Gee SallyAnn, bitter much? When I lived in the UP of Michigan, it snowed continually. Houghton/Hancock got snow every single day for months. So, it was news when it stopped for a day! It is not news when areas of the country that routinely get a ton of snow, get snow. However, when areas that usually do not get such large amounts in a short period of time, get several feet of snow, it is news!
As to whining comments -- I don't think anyone will be able to top yours! You get an A+ in whining.

Thanks Emma. Most of us Lamer's (as per SallyAnn) can handle the snow. Up in those gosh darn mountains there's how many folks? You've got a truck and maybe or may be not - you get out or you don't get out. Or does she or her mountain man just go out their front door and shoot a hare or a deer for the day's meal???

Listen sweetheart, when there's 3' snow in an urban area like Boston with their 2 million people and congestion, it's going to have an effect. Bottom line is that most Bostonians, just like NY'ers or Philadelphians deal with it. We help those neighbors who may be old or infirm and we shovel their walks out, etc. Just like we did after 9/11 or after Sandy (which we're still doing).

It's amazing how easilty the writer (of this article) can so easily pull on that rutabaga of yours and show all of us how susceptible and whacked you really are. End of story and please change your handle to Ms. Debbie Downer.

The Copper Country does get clobbered. If I'm remembering the big snow "thermometer" on 41 right the average snow depth is 270 inches. I think the record was in the area of 310.

The road sign; "End of the earth 2 miles" always gave me a grin.

Send the 2 or 3 feet of snow to Oregon. We can really use it. I live at altitude and the ground is bare.

Heh, I loved the snow up in Houghton/Hancock. For that matter, the snow everywhere in northern Michigan was always fun. I just got tired of the cold and moved. Driving through a foot of snow at 45mph in a small car wasn't a big deal up there (any slower and you'd get stuck).

I always assume it must be a slow weather news day when they go on and on about the newest storm in the northeast. Every year there's a big storm or two in the area and the news makes it sound like a big deal and as if it's rare, when it seems they're pretty used to it....with the exception of Sandy, of course.

I didn't have time to read the news. This explains why it started snowing on my way home. At first, I thought it was rain.

Actually the people you should feel sorry for is those that live in the city. If they lose their power, they freeze. Everywhere else, people use generators to keep warm.

SallyAnn...MSNBC is a New York City station. You should check out the website of the NBC affiliate in your area.

The problem with NYC and vacinity is that they are used to "convenience" so they cannot tolerate a hinderance of any kind, especially ones that cannot be controlled like Mother Nature. It is no excuse for not being prepared to say the least. I am from the White Mountains of New Hampshire so when Winter arrives I am prepared for anything regardless if nothing happens. The same goes for any other season. Most people have no sense for personal responsibility and that goes for anyone in any State, not just the NYC area. Most people I know have the "what about me" attitude. A good example: a friend and an aquaintence were in a terrible car accident 2 weeks ago. Both were transported to the nearest trauma center. The drive (an aquaintance) walked away that night with stitches in his head. My friend (the driver's friend) was admitted into ICU with a cracked vertebrae and bone fragment in his spinal cord. He was monitored for another 72 hours for potential internal injuries. Now he is on a long road to recovery in an acute care facility to learn to walk again. His friend (the driver) shown any concern? Absolutely NOT! He was more concerned about being arrested for a blood alcohol content of more than 3 times the legal limit and vehicular assault. This guy has a history of DWI and drug possession with time spent in prison. Makes you wonder why he is still allowed to drive!!

                          It's February - it's winter time - it's cold - it snows. . . why is that big news?

Having lived up and down the East coast (Atlanta, Baltimore, NJ, Plattsburgh NY) as well as staying in Colorado and Lake Tahoe in the winter I've seen many other winters, and many other storms worse than this past one which for some reason was given a name (lame).

And a heavy snowfall alone does not constitute a "blizzard", another term mis-used term. Extreme cold, snow and strong winds make up a blizzard creating total white-out conditions.

                          Another misinformed lamo.

Winds topped 80 miles an hour near Cuttyhunk, Massachusetts; Westport, Connecticut; and Mt. Washington, New Hampshire.

Winds and heavy snowfall knocked out power to some 650,000 homes and businesses, more than 400,000 of those in Massachusetts. The winds also brought significant coastal flooding from New England to parts of the Mid-Atlantic Seaboard.

It was a blizzard happi boy. Get your facts straight before you spew uninformed crap.

Although there were blizzard conditions this past storm, it is also true that the media and others often say there is a blizzard when there isn't. So it's true that it's misused often, but it wasn't misused during the last storm.

I also have to agree that naming a snow storm is stupid. They name hurricanes to keep track of them. You don't have to keep track of a snow storm. It lasts far less time and you don't have to make much of an effort to be prepared for it if you know what you're doing.

Whats that noxious, toxic, radioactive lead-based stuff wilsonarden41 is pushing anyway? Didn't that stuff kill off my stock, turn my meadow to thistles, bring on the bugs, make my hair fall out and my ears hang down? Call the board of health on him.

One to three inches is nothing, and a dusting is less than nothing. And Sally Ann, cool it; you know naught of what you speak, and your tax dollars share probably amounts to $1.50; I'll send you the stamps. This was not a disaster in New England, just a big storm; we've come out of it reasonably well.

Some people are really uncharitable. They lack the means to give love; they lack the means to give money. This winter is a little lop-sided on when the snow came (all at once) but not so far, has it been an exceptional winter. If you live in the Northeast, this happens. Ocassionaly, a hurricane happens. Often a Nor'easter happens. It's what we pay for the gorgeous Autumns, pretty Springs and more or less moderate Summers. This climate endures. The weather fluctuates. If you begrudge paying a nickel to the poor folks who lost everything, you need to watch a little Dickens or perhaps show yourself to the priests.

I hate to say it, but one to three inches of snow does not constitute several inches as you proclaim in the article. Why must you always sensationalize and try to sell death? Like a previous poster stated, New England is accustomed to getting big storms and this is a far cry from a big storm.

Snow is fun to visit, sure wouldn't want to live it in. We get snow in So. NV about every 8 to 10 years. That's enough for me.

I like it when it snows 2 feet in Boston. I'm not there, and neither are my feet. Like last week when it snowed 3 feet. That left 1 foot somewhere else. Hmmm.

Dear Grayfox: As I am not a Yankee I cannot answer your question - but I can speculate. Prior to the large Irish and German emigrations I would imagine that the Yankees, who first introduced slavery to the Colonies, had their slaves remove the snow by hand and shovel. The new emigrants who first became servants would also fight for the Yankees during the War for Southern Independence and probably did most of the snow removal after that ... until they became proper Yankee$ themselves.

They had tractors on their farms. They worked the farms, most did not have all the material things we have today. Most did not have to commute to the city for work etc. So there is my thinking on it. And why do you call them Yankees that is rude!
