A Miami man who tried to protect his wife and daughter from a pair of home invaders was shot and killed early Wednesday, family members said.
Miami Police say they're looking for two heavily armed suspects who ambushed the family inside their home in the area of Northwest 16th Avenue and 44th Street.
"We call these two men beasts," Miami Police spokeswoman Kenia Reyes said.
Family members said 36-year-old Maurice Harris and his wife and 11-year-old daughter were inside the home when the two men broke in around midnight.
"We are all numb, in disbelief," said Harris' mother-in-law, Annie Streeter, who said her daughter and Harris had been married for 14 years.
According to Streeter, Harris was shot after he stepped in to stop one of the men who aimed his weapon at his daughter.
"Someone took the gun and put it to her head and like, had them hostage there," she said.
The men shot Harris, who was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center where he was later pronounced dead.
"I was like in disbelief that something like this could happen, cause they're a loving family," Streeter said. "The one thing I do know, that he gave his life trying to save his family."
Police said they're looking for the suspects and are asking anyone with information to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.

Notice MSNBC PC police left out the description of the assailants. Of course elsewhere the suspects are identified as two black males. Just more of the spin team keeping the news "clean" for their agenda.

Looks like the gubment forgot to mail this guy his home protection scissors. The guy is a hero and did what most fathers would/should do. I wouldnt hesitate to do the same as he did. But, someone I dont know comes through my door and isnt shouting police or warrant is gonna have a bad time.

Exactly. Dogs while lovable and part of the family have exceptional hearing and most warn of noises they can hear outside that people simply cannot. The bark alone should alert the homeowner in which case they can prepare to protect themselves and their family.
OK, everyone who thinks stricter gun laws would have prevented this, stand up! I didn't think so. Armed thugs are the one main reason the public needs semi automatic weapons with high capacity magazines. The thugs were probably intent on killing the family anyway. So what does the caption have to do with the story? Also this story is very poorly written and mostly just randomly copies as filler what was in the Minnesota paper story. Looks like the "writer" spent about 2 seconds on it and just put in a random photo and caption not related to the story although apparently it's the same guy though years earlier.
Unfortunate and my heart goes out to the family and friends of the deceased. Having said that I will hasten to add that I sleep with a gun within arms length and should someone decide to try to make my family a victim: the first thing they will heard from me is a strongly worded warning to leave my home, the second sound will be a loud bang then NOTHING. There is nothing in the article that indicates whether or not the father owned a gun. Another article indicates they were surprised in their sleep, in which case a gun is a lot likely to be useful. I know gun owners who encountered burglars--leaving their house with the guns.
The NRA does represent the gun manufacturers, even if no gun owners are owners. They have succeeded in getting the CDC and other government agencies to avoid research on the health risks of gun ownership.
A gun might help you defend yourself; but it is much more likely to help a dear family member commit suicide in a moment of despair. The impact of guns on suicide rates is one of the few unshakable statistics in this debate--one that the NRA does not like to see advertised.
This article would seem to indicate that at the time of the shooting they were awake and the father was attempting to respond to a threat to a member of his family. I find it interesting that you claim to KNOW gun owners who have encountered burglars leaving their house with guns. Wow you KNOW these people. Truthfully it sounds like a bit of embellishment on your part. Yes people commit suicide with guns but they also use car exhaust, poisons, hanging, leaps from tall structures and anything that they find available. So spare me the drama that restricting guns will lower suicide rates. As I stated in my post above, anyone who tries to enter my home to make me or my family a victim will be in for a fire-fight. If you choose to politely ask an intruder to leave that is your choice - NOT MINE !!!

Why do you need to pour millions of already scarce tax dollars to learn about the health risks of firearms? Are there really that many completely idiotic people in this world that don't know the risks of having a gun? It's very simple, don't shoot anyone you don't want to die. There is a very high risk of death if you get shot. There, I just saved us hundreds of millions of dollars. Feel free to publish my findings at no cost.
As for the CDC, they were caught red handed promoting anti-gun propaganda and outsourcing their "studies" to known anti-gun organizations. As as 2nd Amendment supporter, the last thing I want my tax dollars going to is groups related to the Joyce Foundation, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, Brady Campaign, etc to promote more BS propaganda aimed at taking away my rights.

The gun owners were distant cousins (yes, one incident). Unless you live or work in a high crime area, your chances of ending up in a situation where a gun might be desired are just rather small. And even then your odds of winning the fight are probably less than 50:50. The criminal has the advantage of surprise and not having to worry about innocent people being injured.
For you ladies out there My wife loves her Glock 19. It fits her hand well and has a 15 round capacity magazine, unless you live in some dumbass state like California or New York, etc, in which case it will come with a smaller magazine.
My wife is incredibly accurate with it. At our last training class, out of all 20 of us, she had shot the tightest groupings of all of us, and she was the one the instructor called out for being an exceptional marksman.
My friends wife tried my wifes Glock 19 and bought herself one a week later.
My wife also loves her 12ga semi-auto shotgun with 18 inch home defense barrel. The Semi Auto Action absorbs alot of the recoil you would feel from a pump action shotgun and she doesnt have to think about pumping it to clear the spent shell and re-chambering a new shell. She enjoys shooting it like you wouldn't believe and you should see her hit the clays.
I would put her up against Obama on the Skeet range any time he's willing.
Ladies you are just as good with guns if not better than men. There is no reason for you to be intimated by them as long as you get the propper training. Guns dont care if your male or female. They dont care if you weigh 130lbs or 220 lbs they still work exactly the same.
Just remember Annie Oakley was one of the best shooters in History and she would make men cry at her shooting skills.

Also in the county where I live budget cuts have reduced law enforcement deputies to a bare minimum and they no longer are equipped to patrol or have any kind of preventative presence, so it is up to our citizens to provide their own protection. So as I said in a previous post, I sleep within arms length on a gun and anyone coming into my home to try to make me or my family a victim will hear a terse warning from me to leave my home, then a loud bang then NOTHING.
If someone else out there feels they can succeed in removing the threat by asking the intruder to leave, then good luck with that. However that will not be my first line of defense.
Mine carries a little Rossi SS 44 Special. It was a Cops back up gun & has a trigger job on it. Adjustable sights & a 3" barrel. Most accurate short barreled gun I have ever shot. She loves it.
Take notice Ladies. Three men that are proud that their wives own guns and know how to use them. It gives me a sense of security knowing that my wife can defend herself and our family if she ever has to which hopefully will never happen. When a man says he's afraid of a woman having a gun you better ask yourself whats wrong with him?

Yep...this would have been much different if they had a gun available. The intruders would have broke in, the father could have said "OK...everyone hold on while I get my gun!", the intruders would have stood there patiently, the father would have returned, the intruders would see the father's handgun, throw their multiple weapons down on the ground, and ran away screaming.

Fritzo. First of all I am a concealed weapons license holder so I tend to have a gun near me much of the time. Secondly when I hear a noise in the night that I think may be a break in my first reaction is to get my gun then find out whats going on. Now I know that you would be able to negotiate with these folks. In many cases the intruder may be satisfied with just stealing your Ipad or Walmart jewelry. But consider that these guys may have decided to get it on with your wife or daughter and may decide to kidnap them for the amusement of their friends. Your first choice may be to call 911 and hope the cops arrive in time. Where I live that is not a good option and as such my first choice is to use what I have at hand and do what I need to do to protect myself and my family.

That said, universal background checks is a good idea and will keep some nut cases from getting their hands on weapons. Simply banning certain types of weapons or capabilities will not have any effect on a criminal's ability to get their weapon of choice. They are criminals... do you think a simple law is a deterrant to someone intent on breaking laws? DUH!!

Funny, just yesterday my brother in NY (LI) was saying how his neighbor's home had been invaded, the neighbor handcuffed and pistol whipped before being robbed.
