If the family was gun owners, that would mean that the assailants would now have MORE guns in their arsenal. The ONLY reason that criminals can get guns cheaply is BECAUSE the NRA has pushed for looser gun laws. If the DEMAND for guns was to be lowered through, I dunno maybe REGISTRATION mandate, then the manufacturers would make less guns, this would mean the guns already made would have MORE value. This means the price in the store and street for a gun would CLIMB, putting guns out of the reach of many criminals, and further drive the balck market under ground, making for obtaining a gun on the street into more seedier places, where the actual petty criminal would possibly not want to tread, for fear of his life.

So, Mandatory Universal registration is DEFINITELY the way to go. It will get the guns out of the hands of the criminals through market forces, and allow those that are stable enough to get a gun and keep it registered. Now hopefully it will also include mandates for education, testing for proficiency and mandatory liability insurance for said firearms.

If the Rights of law abiding citizens to own firearms is lost the only ones that will have Firearms will be criminals because they will not obey the laws and they will not give up their illegal firearms.

Wouldn’t the U.S.A giving up its nuclear weapons mean the rest of the world would give up there Nuclear weapons and the Proliferation of Nuclear weapons would stop? Wouldn’t North Korea, China, Russia, Pakistan, etc. gladly give up its Nuclear Weapons if we gave up ours?

The reason we keep our Nuclear weapons is because it is a deterrent preventing other countries from attacking us with nuclear weapons. The premise is known as “Mutually Assured Destruction”. If you attack us we will attack you and you will be destroyed.

Federal Judge Reed O'Conner ruled on Friday Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents' case has legal merit. They argue their bosses essentially have forced them to look the other way and not enforce the law -- thus overstepping Congress by changing laws through directives rather than legislation.

The state of Mississippi joined the lawsuit against the administration but judge O'Conner dismissed the state from the lawsuit on Friday in the 35-page opinion.

The agents filed the lawsuit in October against the head of the Department of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, and ICE Director John Morton, to ask the courts to overturn last year's directive by Obama to suspend deportation proceedings and offer temporary work authorization to some immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children.

CBS News has learned that two guns found in the area of a recent Mexican drug cartel shootout have been linked to Fast and Furious: One trafficked by a suspect in the case, and the other purchased by a federal agent.

He told CBS News that he ran into financial difficulties in recent years and sold some of his firearms. Gillett says the Herstal pistol may have sold for approximately $1,100.

Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) wrote a letter (PDF) to the Inspector General late today asking for an urgent investigation. Grassley included records from three of Gillett's gun purchases, so-called Form 4473's, and says that Gillett appears to have provided false information on them.

"Lying on a Form 4473 is a felony and can be punished by up to five years in prison," Grassley's letter states. The senator also points out that's the same alleged violation that suspects in ATF's Fast and Furious operation were arrested for. "Jaime Avila, Jr. recently plead guilty to a variety of charges" in Fast and Furious, including "for giving a false address on Form 4473."

Form 4473's require purchasers to list their current residential address. Gillett's gun purchase forms incorrectly list the local ATF Phoenix office and a shopping plaza as his personal residence, according to Grassley's letter.

Gillett did not comment on allegations about the address on the forms.

Sadly home invasions are happening more and more. Even in the small city of Grand Forks, ND a elderly man recently fought off a home invader with a gun. Had he not had the gun the invader would have gotten away with his crime.

The father in this story is without doubt a brave man who made the ultimate sacrifice for his family.

Legal gun owners are the best and most effective deterrent to many crimes, such as this one. The crooks in this case were breaking many laws, none of which had any effect. An AR-15 semi automatic rifle in the hands of the home owner would have solved this problem.

Before I start up my smart mouth, I'll start by offering condolences to the family. The dad did what every father hopes he'll have the guts to do.

Now, since everyone loves statistics so much (kidding) let me remind those who think the husband should have had a gun of what most likely would have happened:

1. The daughter/mom/dad would have accidentally shot herself or her friends last year, or committed suicide

2. The dad, during a domestic dispute, would have shot his wife (way more likely than the reverse)

3. The intruders would have taken the gun out of his shaking hands and shot him, his wife and his daughter

4. He somehow shoots the intruders, then their gangbanger friends come the next week and kill the whole family.

Each of those scenarios is more likely than the "hero" scenario where he scares off or shoots the intruders and lives happily ever after.

While I don't think gun laws are the answer, since we are clearly unable to enforce them, gun ownership is KNOWN to not be the answer. More guns, more violence, live by the sword, die by the sword.

They forgot to mention that the victim had a prior felony arrest for drug trafficking.

Those two black men did NOT intend to kill; they were only seeking to redistribute wealth. I have no doubt that they had conceal carry permits and the weapons used were properly registered. Since the father was not armed, they were able to escape without consequence and will continue to pass the background checks when they upgrade their arsenal at the local Wal-Mart. The child can now grow to womanhood proud that her father gave his life to contribute, in some small way, to bringing South Florida closer in spirit to the President's hometown, Chicago. It's true that no one impeded this poor man from having a gun or guns. No one really knows what would have happened if he did, but it probably wouldn't have been worse. Just another incoherent rant. For instance, you speak of "getting off the government tit" yet are basically demanding that "the government" create the jobs for us to do so. Understand this, the government doesn't create jobs, although it can be highly effective in creating the proper environment for job creation. The real job creators are workers with decent paying jobs. Let's throw the ball into the right court and lambast businesses that send jobs overseas in the search for even more obscene profits. And how you make the leap from this father's death to the idea that increasing control over gun availability won't work is astonishing. Even assuming this man had a gun and given the fact that they were ambushed would suggest that he would not have had time to get the gun, unless of course he was wearing strapped to his hip while spending quality time with his wife and daughter.

If the guy had been armed he may or may not have survived. Probably would have had a better chance. He just needed a handgun or a shotgun, though, and not an assault rifle; that wouldn't have made a difference.

These felons will repeat this crime. That's what's so scary. We need people to act as community watchdogs, and to work with police because we have some real mosters out there. How do we know the victim didn't own a gun? All the article says is two heavily armed men broke into the home around midnight. If the family was asleep and the intruders were able to enter without their knowledge, they could have had weapons pointed at them and had no chance to retrieve a firearm.

When criminals know that they are going to be really punsished they will not be so willing to commit criminal activity and if they know full well that a firearm put them in a work camp for 10-15 years mandatory they would not be so happy to use them either!

This is the only Gun laws that I am willing to vote for, especially since they already do background checks when they sell firearms so I see no reason to have another law saying mandatory background checks, it already is mandatory! We should also outlaw all motorcycles that go fast, and not allow kids to ride in cars, and most of all make it so that you must be 21 in order to own or drive a car!!!!
