“It was really scary; kind of surreal," says woman whose mother was on Dorner's hit list

This undated photo released by the Los Angeles Police Department shows suspect Christopher Dorner, a former Los Angeles officer.

Many families who were under the LAPD’s protective custody are beginning to return to their normal lives after spending the last week living with officers outside their doors 24/7.

On Thursday – just one day after a sighting of fugitive Christopher Dorner led to a deadly shootout and fire at a Big Bear-area cabin – NBC San Diego spoke exclusively with one woman whose mother was a target in Dorner’s online manifesto, which outlined a homicidal revenge plot involving law enforcement and their families.

For a week straight, black and white patrol cars sat outside this family’s home. The resident inside was an LAPD officer who was named in Dorner’s hit list.

“It was really scary; kind of surreal. [It] felt like a movie,” said the daughter, who wished to remain anonymous.

The woman said her mother tried to remain calm despite the frightening ordeal.

“She’s been really strong, just more worried about her children than anything,” she said. “There were four different tiers of officers who needed protection and my mom was in the second tier.”

Since Feb. 6, the LAPD has kept close watch on 40 people who were named in Dorner’s manifesto, along with their families.

Timeline: Revenge-Plot Slayings | Map: LAPD Manhunt

This has been an overwhelming undertaking for the department when you consider three officers to each home, 24 hours a day.

Still, the protection from law enforcement was unwavering.

“It's scary but I mean at the same time, her house was the safest place to be. She had so much protection,” the daughter told NBC San Diego.

Now that officials have ended the manhunt for Dorner, relief has washed over many targeted families.

But, now, other feelings are bubbling up as well.

“It's all setting in that people are dead and, I don't know, I think [my mother] having a hard time with it. I think there's a certain amount of shock,” the daughter added.

Some LAPD families who were considered most at-risk in Dorner’s manifesto remained under police protection Thursday night, but many are now on their own since the threat seems to have passed.

If Dorner hadn't put out his manifesto so early he would likely have killed several before the police connected the dots.

I completely agree. Unfortunately, the media will be running this into the ground as they do everything. I am sure the daughter will want to write a book. cha-ching

Glad Dorner didn't get to fulfill what he set out to do. My condolences to the families that lost a loved one in this horrible ordeal. Let the families grieve in peace, keep the cameras and reporters away. The media doesn't need to rehash this day after day after day. Coulda, woulda, shoulda......who knew?

Make sure that "Mom" is kept away from the police around there, you never know who they are going to kill next, now they have a list to follow----Obviously they do not care who they kill every day at random in the name of investigating the public, like several shootings in this case! there or anywhere else.

Prove he's dead. Personally I think the LAPD is covering up and has no idea where Dorner is. It's a strange story and they already lied about him dieing once.

Oh there will be people coming forward, for thier 15 minutes of fame, on TV shows, etc. saying they were on the list.. Is it not funny, how everyday people have not private protection i.e. sitting in front of the house, etc. yet the police can do so for their own, when they are threatened. Kind of being one sided right ? And they want to remove our firearms so we can not protect ourselves, yet they have them and protect each other.. Talk about hypocritial and prejudice.

It's pretty amazing how some people blame LAPD for everything bad that happens. If Dorner worked for Baskin and Robbins he would have "had it in" for the employees there like he's "had it in" for the women he dated. He was a mentally disturbed man. He could have "had it in" for you if you had the misfortune of knowing him.

Life is all about time and chance and how you deal with the good or the bad each and every day. My guess is Dorner may have been wronged at LAPD, but many of us have been wronged at work. Most of us don't choose to go postal; instead we find another job. He should have joined another police force in some other town and went on with his life, rather than turn into a vicious murderer.

So, id bet Christopher Dorners life that the woman that this article is referring to, is the one who started this whole mess in the first place. the rest of this rant will be theoretical in nature. many lives are tragically changed forever with one kick to the face and chest of an insignificant man years ago. If she wouldnt have lied about this whole thing we wouldnt be reading this while the families of the dead are making funeral arrangements. Also three citizens wouldnt have been targeted by over reactive police shooting at anything. This woman is squarely to blame, I wonder if she is sleeping well these days, If I was in the same position as the woman that kicked the guy and screwed with Dorner, i wouldnt be able to sleep at night and id be racked with guilt. When you ruin somebodies life you dont know how they will react mentally. They may commit suicide, they may do worse.

Of course, I rather get beat/kicked by a crooked cop than killed. They should have negotiated with him, though- found him innocent, reinstated him as department head, a $100 Dunkin Donuts gift card and a platinum billy club.

Check out what CNN had to say about him,

"One of the common threads –'I read the manifesto — and this is not a crazy man," Lemon said. "He is quite sane. People need to read and think. Don't be reactionary like a sheep. Read what he wrote. Look at the details. Process some of it. Be discerning instead of just reacting. I have a lot of questions about the LAPD.'"

Why has the police stated the fire in the cabin was started by tear gas cannisters when they were heard on different radios requesting permission to use flash grenades and other types of grenades and then given the OK. This may be one more reason this case needs to be reopened and examined by others than the LAPD people.

Well, what was this guy before he wigged out? I also read a couple of weeks ago about a guy who sold cubicles. He went to sell to another man who decided not to buy because he couldn't refurbish the cubicles. What did the "law-abiding" salesman do? He went home, got a gun, and went back and killed the would-be customer. Again, a law-abiding citizen who blew his top when he got stressed. Don't tell me it is only hardened criminals who kill people like this.

Sorry but you got me all wrong. I don't think giving more people more guns will help matters.

I didn't get you wrong, Dan. I was poking fun at you. But think about what i said. There's a lot of truth there. I'm not a supporter of the NRA. But i do own guns because of it's leadership. The NRA is arming rwnj's who will run amuck if the gubment ever fails. I'll be ready for the marauding bastards. This liberal fights back.
