94-year-old Virginia man murdered; woman held over burglary

A woman charged with burglarizing a Virginia home where an elderly man was found dead will appear in court Friday.

Marie Maybell Johnson, 45, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of burglarizing the home in Alexandria in November.

Her arrest came hours after a relative found 94-year-old Elmer Roehrs dead in his house.

Johnson has not been charged in Roehrs' death, which authorities have ruled a homicide.

Roehrs's stepson discovered his body about 6:50 p.m. Wednesday at their home in the 2700 block of Holly Street in the Del Ray neighborhood.

Roehrs apparently suffered trauma to the upper body, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors told News4's Megan McGrath that Roehrs's death stunned them but that the family seemed to have a problem with break-ins and recently installed security equipment.

A surveillance camera is aimed at the front door, and floodlights are installed around the sides of the house. Signs state that a security alarm is in place.

Alexandria Police Department

Marie Maybell Johnson, 45, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of burglarizing a home in Alexandria in November.

A neighbor said that to her knowledge, no other homes had been burglarized. "I think it's been targeted several times, so yeah, it's a little strange," she said.

Johnson, of no fixed address, was charged with burglary and grand larceny for a break-in that occurred Nov. 27, when someone took silverware and electronic equipment.

Police arrested her about 3:15 a.m. Thursday following a traffic stop on Duke Street.

Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille often responds to police incidents likely to raise community concern.

"This is the type of incident we certainly don't want to have in our community," he said Wednesday night, "...[and] I have every confidence that [police] will get to the bottom of this, and we'll understand what happened and why and bring this case to a close."

Roehrs's wife, 87-year-old Marian Bouk, owns several condos along Richmond Highway that she rents to people in need, helping them get their lives back together, News4's Pat Collins reported. Neighbors said they would often see tenants dropping off rent checks around the first of the month.

Roehrs' death is the first homicide in Alexandria in 2013. No homicides were reported in Alexandria in 2012.

Another day of offering condolences to family and friends of the deceased. I'm just surprised the story was run, considering there was no gun involved.

Aren't you going to stand up and take a bow NBC? Isn't this what you preach for every day?

That poor minorities are entitled to the gains of those who are successful... apparently she finally accepted the message that she was indeed "entitled" and found an "evil" (i.e. successful) person to "redistribute" his earnings to herself.

AG Holder says this is not a hate crime. Black on white crime is simply an economic crime. Only white on black is a hate crime. The only remorse this piece of human excrement feels is that she got caught. This is a result of a welfare system that allows recipients to breed and act like animals.

I know it not a popular opinion until people understand the numbers but what you stated is why I believe that we should give free birth control, sterilization and abortions to everyone and decrease all welfare payments until they are gone to force personal responsibility. That way there is no excuse and we won't have to pay, both financially and through crime for the next generation of scum. And the future reduction in cost of welfare would more than pay for the birth control provided.

The problem is we don't look at things two generations out, we only look at tomorrow.

It doesn't matter what color.

The losers in your own community tend to prey on you when you're old no matter what race lives near you. I have lost both sets of grands now, due to old age. The people they had problems with when they became frail were the losers and addicts who lived within roughly two blocks of them. These elder abusers feed on the weak they see around them because its easy. Because the elders know you will put them in an assisted living facility to protect them they keep what is happening secret for as long as possible and let these people shame them or they try to fight them and get killed, we ultimately put them in assisted living facilities when we found out what was happening to them. There is no other way to watch over them if you work outside the home. It was both mexicans and white guys stealing and using their house facilities and watching their tv, but all losers and criminals who couldn't get a real job. Race didn't matter. They needed money for drugs and were un-hirable so had to steal from somebody, so big target on the elderly's back..

I think you need to reread the article - the women robbed him in November and he was killed this week so it doesn't stand to reason that she is responsible for his death. Also, it appears that his house was robbed a number of times and that the wife had connections to lower income tenants. I'm not saying that I like what this dirt bag did, but I'm not yet ready to label her a murderer as you have.

Renting to down-and-outers = risky.

Having them drop off the rent at your home = begging for trouble. Use a business address when dealing with the public, and make it a secure address if dealing specifically with dregs (armed security, bulletproof pass-through, etc.)

Cameras might be good for documenting a crime after it happens (like the police), but only the presence of sturdy armed security can prevent the crime.

Isn't that the truth Tarzan. You never heard of Al or Jesse raising hell with the shootings in Chicago, they only raise hell when a white person kills a black person. Reason is, they can convince the other blacks to fund their protests.

And those two laugh all the way to the bank, knowing they just fleeced their fellow black people. Those two should also be locked up for inciting riots, in the past and for in the future.

And no, I am not being a racist, just stating the FACTS. And if I am wrong, show proof of where I am wrong.

White addicts prey on the elderly just as much. Ask at the antique stores. We had to have some arrested for stealing and mooching off our G-parent elders. You have as much to fear from whites as anyone else when you get old. People walk in your house when you're 90 and take what they want. They sit down and watch tv and will lock you in your room if you protest. The vultures are multi-racial. When they see you looking frail enough they start gathering. Thats why people are starting to join the retirement communities that have security patrols.

Over the past 45 years living in New England, Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania I have known a number of people who were White and became victims of Black on White Crime. The number of White's Raped, Assaulted,Kidnapped , Murdered and even tortured by Blacks number in the "thousands"just in the areas I lived in. The worst was probably the White Family of Four in Richmond, Virginia who were bound in their basement and tortured, Raped and Murdered. Their two daughters were tortured in front of the Parents to make them divulge all Bank Accounts and Pin Codes. The Murder of Elderly White Citizens in this Country by Blacks is far more common than we are ever told by the Media. Black Women Murder White elderly citizens at an alarming and increasing rate. TRAVON!! TRAVON!! Oh right, Blacks are Justified to murder 94 year olds.

You are a racist. Whites take drugs and steal as much as anyone else. Ask at the pawn shops and antique stores down town. You hit 80 and they will rob you blind and buy meth. They don't kill you because then they will run out of things food and money to steal. A frail old white person is a drug addict's dream. This lady was stupid for killing her cash cow. Drug addicts lived off of my uncle's 90 year old father for years in Oklahoma. Then my uncle showed up un-announced, he is in California so wasn't expected. He showed up and saw what was going on, called the cops, the police hauled away a bunch of white drug addicts. The bad kids, robbers and addicts prey on the elderly because they won't tell their relatives because they know they will put them in a home. Which we did.

You are a racist. Whites take drugs and steal as much as anyone else.

Please show your source for prison populations anywhere in this country that backup your claim.

And just how does stating facts make anyone a racist?

      http://abcnews.go.com/TheLaw/story?id=5009270&page=1

Some of the key factors for the record imprisonment rate include:

A record 2.3 million people were in the nation's prisons and jails in 2007, according to a Justice Department report released on June 6, 2008.

Race: Black males continue to be incarcerated at an extraordinary rate. Black males make up 35.4 percent of the jail and prison population — even though they make up less than 10 percent of the overall U.S population. Four percent of U.S. black males were in jail or prison last year, compared to 1.7 percent of Hispanic males and .7 percent of white males. In other words, black males were locked up at almost six times the rate of their white counterparts.

This is a chronic problem in our country. As soon as my grandparents hit 83-85 they began being targeted by people in their own neighborhood. Part of the problem is that older areas of town tend to become more run down in many cases, but the elderly don't want to leave the house they've always lived in. After what happened to my grandparents over and over again, my parents put them in assisted living houses against their wishes until they died (because they had given them power of attorney and they wanted to make sure nothing else happened to them), then made their own arrangements to sell their own property and buy a small house in a retirement community when they reach that age.

Why? Because they don't want to go through what their parents did.

My grandpa was accosted on the street several times at the old house he'd always lived at by local teen boys while he walked to the mailbox to get his mail. They would surround him, grab his wallet out of his back pocket and simply take all the cash out and put the wallet back, like he was an ATM. When he stopped carrying his wallet outside, they knocked him around and pushed him down. This harassment and other events either contributed to or heightened and made swifter my Grandpa's decent into dementia and subsequent death. My dad to this day believes these people, his neighbors, caused my grandpa to literally fret himself to death.

The shame and worry about what somebody will do to him and his wife next was too much stress for his already weakened mind and he descended rapidly into a very paranoid form of dementia where he was plagued with delusions right up till the end that somebody was breaking into the house (which had happened often at the old house once they became visibly frail and the thieves who lived 2 houses over had pretty well cleaned them out by the time he and grandma told us about what was happening over there), even when we put him in a home he thought someone was trying to rob him all the time and within two weeks he had to be sedated or he would attack the staff. Grandma did not have violent dementia and so stayed in a separate care house with some other ladies run by a very nice older couple who used to work as nurses. She was angry and didn't want to be there at first, but it was a nice place with other women to talk to (she always liked having company) and the food was good so she learned to live with it.

Before we moved them out of their old home the grandparents also had to deal with jerks who owned pit bulls and wouldn't keep their gates closed. The pitt bull of one of these guys ripped up my grandmother's legs at the mailboxes down the street. The owner was home but did nothing about it. The nice old mexican cowboy neighbor who lived across the street from my grandparents, who was driving home, saw her lying by the mailboxes and called an ambulance. I don't advocate breaking the law but... a relative of mine after getting the story from grandma and the neighbor, he got so angry he went down by the mailboxes with a bat whereupon that dog ran out to get HIM and he killed the dog. The owner was watching, probably watched it rip up grandma too and came out yelling at him, he offered to give the guy the same treatment and the guy went back in his house and said nothing more.

Local drug addicts, strangers, would walk right into my Grandparents' house through the front door and use their shower and the bathroom, with them there, raid the fridge for food while being yelled at to get out by these traumatized old people, and sometimes even go to sleep on the couch after threatening my grandparents. The grandparents were so ashamed that they couldn't stop these people that they didn't tell us about it until a year or so after it started happening.

Some of you guys think its all blacks and mexicans. Thats not true. The kids that robbed grandpa on the street were mexican, but the DRUG ADDICTS were WHITE GUYS, and they would take from inside of the house right in front of the old people and threaten them. Or sit down and take the tv remote away and tell my grands to get out so they would retreat to the porch all day.

My Uncle's dad had the same problem, only when he became frail, the vultures moved right in and started living there so they could control his money directly. They didn't even clean the house though they were staying there for over a year. He was in another state. My Uncle went there to visit and walked in on a filthy mess with drug addicts, white people again, sleeping or stoned in every room. He called the police and they cleared them out, he had the house cleaned and put up for sale and put his dad in a care home. His dad had given up, like he felt he wasn't a man any more because he couldn't keep them out. He had never said anything about what was happening either.

We started taking turns staying with grandma at night when we got ready to sell the property, to stop the thefts, and were still looking for a place to take her. Grandpa was already in the dementia ward by then. On my nights I would be suddenly awakened sometimes by a crash at the front door like somebody tried to kick it in, or somebody talking under my window sill or hitting the wall there hard with a rock or something -probably to see if someone was staying over. The thieves down the street, we later found out were using their small son who was 6 or 7 to squeeze in through the bathroom window which people often leave unlocked, and so did grandma, and then the child would go and unlock the front door for them to come in and steal while she was right there. All I could do is go around and turn the lights on. I don't think the "attacks" were harassment as much as it was them trying to see if anyone was staying over with her because it wasn't repeated after I turned on the lights. My relatives still had to replace the tv and dvd player there twice though on nights when someone decided not to stay over. When we moved Grandma out and the house was empty for ONE night, anything left behind of any value was stolen immediately and the next week the teens busted out several windows, the front door, and spray painted all over the walls inside and out which made it hard to sell. So, we had to pay to fix all of that and then pay a guy to stay there to keep the house from being attacked. My dad knows him, he would sit on the porch during the day with a paintball gun. He speaks spanish which is how he found out about which neighbors were the professional robbers, which is how we found out. The neighbors would talk on the street right in front of him about their crimes and plans.

One other way the elderly are targeted I feel the need to mention is charities. Back in the 80s and 90s the tv Preacher mooching was really bad. These people ended up living in mansions built on 80 year old peoples social security money. Not just Jim and Tammy Baker, but all the rest of them. How do you think Jimmy Swaggart, Pat Robertson and all those others got so rich? That money never went to Jesus, unless their middle name was Jesus. Oh they say they took a cut of it as wages for their work, but if it was represented by a pie chart it was most of the pie. No honest preacher lives in a mansion. These mega churches are the same exact scam. If you don't believe me, find out where your favorite celebrity preacher lives and drive by sometime. Way nicer than your house, probably looks like a plantation mansion, and nicer neighborhood I guarantee you. Only a fraction of that charity money you gave to "jesus" went to help people.

We noticed way before all the other stuff started that my grandparents were having trouble making ends meet. They both had SS money coming in and savings and My uncle who owned a grocery would give them the dented cans and things to take home when they went shopping. So they even had a little free food. My uncles were also paying their electric and water bill, so why were they nearly starving? My dad and uncles finally went over there and went through their bills (this was when they were in their late 70s not even 80 yet) and bank account statements. My grandparents apparently were watching these religious channels all day long. The tv preachers would do everything to guilt you out of your money, and these other commercials want you to give to the christian childrens fund and other things, showing starving kids. (why do starving people make so many kids? I want to send them condoms and birth control pills, not food.) My Grandparents were giving nearly all of their S.S. check money to these charities and christian organizations. Their mail box was even full of mailers from more groups with sob stories wanting charity money. My dad and uncles had to go through and canceled each charity some that were directly charging the grandparents main account, and after that they handled their finances directly.

I never saw more than 1 or 2 charity mailers in our mail but once in a while growing up, or in my 30s. Still don't. My parents hit retirement age 6 years ago. They now complain their mail is full of mailers asking for donations, many of them religious organizations. These people are vultures on the elderly. I don't want to argue about how legitimate the cause. My mother is nearly 70, she should not be bothered any more than they bother younger people. If the organization participates in preying on advanced age groups they are a pack of vultures. The religious groups are some of the worst.

K.Anderson,Everything you state is true in the older neighborhoods. It's called elder abuse and that is why family must be in contact daily with the senior members of their families. This has not happened to any seniors in our family because adult children moved in with them.I have no children but when I'm an old woman I will not be moving anyplace.I have the right to bear arms and lawless people will be greeted by a shotgun.I'm sorry for everything that transpired in your grandparents homes.I think this lady is despicable. If she's convicted of murder we won't have to worry about her doing this to anybody else.

When you are 90 you won't have the strength to pull the trigger, also you don't want to shoot your great grand daughter by mistake when she lets herself in carrying a pie on your birthday. That happens more often than thieves getting shot.. Plan to live in a nice elder community when you are 80, don't wait till your mind starts to go frail. You pick a nice place and don't let some relative stuff you somewhere.

Not too long ago, I was on a website (that I will not name here), and a woman had emailed and said she needed a pair of "gently used" size 8 shoes for her daughter. Well..... I wear a size 8 shoe myself, and, having several pair that might suit a girl her daughter's age, I began to email with her back and forth. I thought I might help her with a pair of shoes.

She told me a lot about herself - she was living with some friends after leaving an abusive husband, and she and her daughter were trying to scrape together enough money to get their own place, a drunk driver had totalled her car, but thankfully she had good car insurance so she was driving a rental for the time being, but the mileage she was allowed to put on the rental was minimal, so she couldn't drive far.

We talked, back and forth, for quite awhile. She even sent me a photo of her daughter, wearing the new shoes I bought her (yes I bought her some new shoes - I couldn't stand the thought of a young girl, high-school age, wearing "used" shoes! So I bought her a new pair of shoes).

One day she emailed me and told me they get gettiing their own apartment, and she asked me if I knew anyplace where she could get some household items?

Well! It so happens I have two of everything that goes into a kitchen! I boxed up so much stuff for my new "friend", I had to take out my back seats to get it all into my car!

I was ready to take all the stuff to my new "friend" - but for some reason, I hesitated. I don't know why, maybe it was just God's way of looking out for me or something.

I had told my new "friend" that I would come see her and her daughter on a Saturday, but when Saturday came I felt sick, like I might be coming down with the flu, so I cancelled.

I didn't tell her, but I thought that I would try to go the next day, Sunday. I had their old address, so I thought I would go by there, and let the people she had been living with tell me where the new place was located.

Well! The people she had been living with, had QUITE A STORY TO TELL about my new "friend" - apparently she had several people on-line who were giving her "things", and she would sell the stuff and get money for dope.

And the daughter, whose picture she'd sent me? The daughter who so desperately needed "new shoes"??

She didn't exist - that was just some young woman she did dope with. But it wasn't her daughter.

I know, now, why I hesitated to give her all that stuff - something about the whole situation didn't feel right. And I was right.

I know there really are people out there, who are needy, who are good people, who DO NEED A HELPING HAND.

But there are also a lot of users and evil-doers and they will not hesitate to use you and worse.

People with soft hearts, who are easily pulled-in by their heart-strings by a sad story, need to be careful, and you need to watch out.

Same profile every time...career criminal, in and out of prison, multiple arrests, not in prison where she belongs...and this is what happens.

Anybody ready to get tough on crime and tough on criminals, instead of wasting time, energy, and resources on convincing the public that gun laws targeting law-abiding citizens is a better solution than actually punishing criminals properly for their crimes?

The shooters seem to be getting their guns from law-abiding citizens. So, yes, I think we need to deal with the guns in this country!

I also think we should punish criminals fully! Why are they put back on the streets? I agree with you - I am sick of this!

Why not do both and really help our society?
