Obama recognizes Sandy Hook educators with second-highest civilian honor

President Obama has been referring to the tragedy in Newtown to build support for his new gun control laws, awarding the Presidential Citizens Medal posthumously to the six teachers and administrators killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

WASHINGTON -- Family members of the six adults killed in the Newtown, Conn., school shooting were at the White House Friday as President Barack Obama bestowed the nation's second-highest civilian honor on their fallen relatives.

One by one, Obama read the names of the six educators receiving the Presidential Citizens Medal, saying they had no idea when they woke up on a chilly December morning of the sacrifice they would soon make for their communities.

"They could have focused on their own safety, on their own well-being. But they didn't," Obama said. "They gave their lives to protect the precious children in their care."

For all the grief-filled vigils and agonizing funerals that have marked the two months since a shooter killed the six adults and 20 first-graders at the school, Friday's ceremony was markedly optimistic. In place of tears, there were smiles on the faces of some of the victims' relatives, as Obama presented the medals in a memorial affirming the devotion to citizenship he said the six exemplified.

"It defines our way our life," Obama said. "It captures our belief in something bigger than ourselves -- our willingness to accept certain obligations to one another and to embrace the idea that we're all in this together."

Two of the educators honored, Principal Dawn Hochsprung and school psychologist Mary Sherlach, are believed to have lunged, unarmed, at the gunman to try to stop him. Another, teacher Victoria Soto, reportedly hid children in a closet. Lauren Rousseau read to her students as a gunman invaded the school, doing her best to keep them calm. Rachel D'Avino and Anne Marie Murphy were said to have wrapped their arms around the children amid the chaos.

President Barack Obama presents a 2012 Citizens Medal to the family of Sandy Hook Elementary School school psychologist Mary Sherlach on Friday in the East Room of the White House. Accepting the honor, from left to right, daughters Katy Sherlach and Katy Schwartz, and husband Bill Sherlach.

Among the 18 people honored Friday was Dr. T. Berry Brazelton, a renowned pediatrician who developed a leading behavioral test for newborns. He created the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale, which hospitals across the country use to detect physical and neurological abnormalities. Another medal went to former Pennsylvania Sen. Harris Wofford, a volunteerism advocate who advised Martin Luther King Jr., helped form the Peace Corps program and was a leader in higher education.

Obama credited another honoree, Jeanne Manford, with inspiring a movement. In the 1970s Manford launched a campaign for tolerance for gays and lesbians after her son, Morty, was assaulted at a gay rights demonstration. She created a support group that evolved into Parents, Families, & Friends of Lesbians and Gays, a national organization that now has more than 350 chapters. Manford's daughter accepted the award on behalf of her late mother.

"These folks participate, they get involved, they have a point of view," Obama said. "They don't just wait for somebody else to do something, they go out there and do it, and they join and they become part of groups and they mobilize and they organize."

As compelling as this is it's mere symbolism over substance.

This is just more Bread and Circuses from our corrupt and incompetent government.

A better honor would be to totally dismantle our criminal government run public education system and reform it so our children aren't graduating illiterate.

End the pathetic politically and union driven Department of Education. Offer school vouchers for private charter schools and let the free-market separate the wheat from the chaff. For thirty years our government has methodically dumbed-down our children. We are on the second generation of illiterates being graduated from our schools.

We have seen repeated examples of how the private sector can provide significantly improved education for our children.

54 percent of all teachers have limited English proficient (LEP) students in their classrooms, yet only one-fifth of teachers feel very prepared to serve them.

Most Americans read at an 8th grade level.

The educational careers of 25 to 40 percent of American children are imperiled because they don't read well enough, quickly enough, or easily enough.

Approximately 50 percent of the nation's unemployed youth age 16-21 are functional illiterate, with virtually no prospects of obtaining good jobs.

Most American’s don’t know how to use—there, their or they’re—correctly in a sentence.

60 percent of America's prison inmates are illiterate and 85% of all juvenile offenders have reading problems. Does ANYONE think this may be one of the main reasons they are in jail?

Over one million children drop out of school each year, costing the nation over $240 billion in lost earnings, forgone tax revenues, and expenditures for social services. This is nearly $2.5 trillion in lost revenue generating income over 10 years.

More than 20 percent of adults read at or below a fifth-grade level - far below the level needed to earn a living wage.

More than three out of four of those on welfare, 85% of unwed mothers and 68% of those arrested are illiterate.

Most high school graduates, hell most adults, can’t calculate 40% of 870 in their head.

Nearly half of America's adults are poor readers, or "functionally illiterate." They can't carry out simply tasks like balancing check books, reading drug labels or writing essays for a job.

To participate fully in society and the workplace in 2020, citizens will need powerful literacy abilities that until now have been achieved by only a small percentage of the population.

21 million Americans can't read at all, 45 million are marginally illiterate and one-fifth of high school graduates can't read their diplomas.

Unfortunately this leads to the Dunning-Kruger effect. This occurs when incompetent people not only fail to realize their incompetence, but consider themselves much more competent than everyone else. Basically, they're too stupid to know that they're stupid. How much of this do we see exposed every day, especially in our inner cities and poverty stricken areas?

We spend more than any nation on education, other than Switzerland.

MONEY IS NOT THE ISSUE!!!!!!!!

Yes, honor the brave teachers from Newtown, but to truly celebrate their sacrifice is to give our children the best education possible so they can truly compete and prosper in the 21st century economy.

I don't see how taking time to honor educators who sacrificed their lives to save their students as a way to push his agenda. Yes, he is pushing for more gun control laws on a Federal level because of the shooting but he wasn't using this time to push anything, only to honor the educators and others who were receiving honors for other achievements.

Not trying to insult the murdered teachers in any way; but, as I said before, no one knows what happened inside the school, or anything about the teachers' actions. Labeling so many people as "heroes", as our society so easily does, debases the word.

And what "unbiased eyes" are you using to look at the situation, 'spike'? Their are numerous eyewitness accounts from the surviving students at Sandy Hook, some who were saved by being hidden by their teachers, who died. Some actually witnessed the death of their teacher.

Is it just easier for you to take the low road, make the fallacious statement "no one knows what happened" and doubt the word of eyewitnesses, than it is to accept the selfless actions of others as being worthy of our admiration and praise, and telling their surviving family members that we honor the sacrifices of their loved ones?

        List of Recipients: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidential_Citizens_Medal

STARS AND STRIPES: WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama will award four veterans the 2012 Presidential Citizens Medal, the nation’s second-highest civilian honor, in a ceremony Feb. 15 at the White House. Three of the four recipients, announced today, will be recognized for their extraordinary work and commitment to assisting other veterans. Overall, 18 awards will be given, including six to adult victims of the Newtown, Ct., school shooting.

        The veterans:

        • Adam Burke of Jacksonville, Fla., is an Iraq War combat veteran and Purple Heart recipient who was injured in a mortar attack. Despite struggling with PTSD and traumatic brain injury after shrapnel tore into his arms and legs, he eventually landed at his family’s farm, where in 2009 he opened Veterans Farm, a 19-acre handicap-accessible farm that teaches veterans of all ages how to make a living off the land. For Burke and other veterans who have found jobs there, farming helped improve their hand-eye coordination and helped heal the physical and mental wounds of war.

        • Michael Dorman of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., served 20 years in the Coast Guard before founding Military Missions in Action, a nonprofit that helps veterans with mental or physical disabilities live independently. He is the executive director of the organization, which assists veterans with a wide range of needs and services. The nonprofit builds wheelchair ramps and does bathroom modifications for aging or wounded veterans. Since 2008, the organization has completed more than 100 home modification projects and shipped thousands care packages to soldiers, the White House said.

        • Terry Shima of Gaithersburg, Md., was drafted into the Army in October 1944 and became a member of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a unit of Japanese Americans who volunteered for combat duty. In November 2011, Congress awarded the Congressional Gold Medal collectively to the 442nd RCT, the 100th Battalion and the Military Intelligence Service. Shima also served as executive director of the Japanese American Veterans Association, a nonprofit that serves Japanese American veterans and their families; he is now chairman of its outreach and education committees.

        • Billy Mills of Fair Oaks, Calif., was a first lieutenant in the Marine Corps when he gained prominence during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, unexpectedly winning a gold medal in the 10,000-meter run. Today, he remains the only American to ever win this event. Mills, an Oglala Lakota, co-founded Running Strong for American Indian Youth in 1986. He is the spokesman for the group, which supports cultural programs and provides health and housing assistance for Native American communities.

The annual Citizens Medal, established in 1969 to recognize Americans for outstanding service to their country, is awarded by the president based on nominations.

Kyle's death may be sad, but it pales in comparison to Sandy Hook. Kyle didn't die trying to save a room full of six-year-olds. And, like I said, it's irrelevant.

And yes there is a gun grabber agenda, California, Missouri, new York, Washington state, so far are pushing for total confiscation of Allsemi auto weapons.

Tom, first of all, what you list are state initiatives, having nothing to do with Obama. And second, New York dropped any attempt to confiscate, I live in Washington and have heard of no attempts to do that here, and I sincerely doubt that you are accurate in any way on the other states. It is you, not Obama, who is using a forum honoring the bravery of the Newtown teachers to push an agenda, and are doing so now with inaccurate information.

Tom, you need to step back on this issue. Two unarmed educators lunging at a fully loaded assault weapon...makes them heroes. Holding children in your arms...knowing you were all going to be shot, but trying to stay calm for their last moments on this earth, for hiding them in closets...trying to use your body as a shield...THOSE ARE HEROES. Make NO mistake.

The soldier who killed DID have PTSD but he had other "demons" as well. Kyle was doing what he believed to be "good and right " for his fellow soldiers. The truth was...he was NOT an expert in Psychology or Psychiatry. He was in error trying to "help" this soldier. He needed the Professionals to CLEAR him for the Gun Range.

Kathleen, Get your facts straight. They didn't lunge at a fully loaded assault weapon, that was just media hype. They didn't lunge period, they hid, as I would have done! The principal went to see what the noise was, not to 'lunge' at a gunman. And, in fact there wasn't even an automatic assault weapon on the premises except for the ones the police had which were semi-automatic. He had a hunting rifle in his trunk, and was found shot dead inside with 2 hand guns! I'm just sick of Obama wiping that same fake tear from his eye, as the media likes to promote it.

Uh, Chris Kyle was working with the schools here in Texas to get teachers trained properly in gun handling and accuracy to be 1st scene responders on the school campuses in Texas to, yes, protect our children! I think that and the fact that he was the most prolific sharpshooter ON BEHALF OF OUR COUNTRY, for this government, deserves a mention from the POTUS at the very least, the very, very least. Maybe not at this ceremony, but the silence during Chris Kyle's funeral was deafening.

purehearts, you are the one the needs to check your facts. I heard the live press conference with the coroner who examined the bodies. He stated very clearly that every single wound in the victims came from the AR-15, which most of us call an assault weapon. The only shots fired from the hand guns were the ones that the shooter used to take his own life. I believe there was a shotgun still in the car, but some of those kids had nineteen bullets in them, and there were twenty-six victims, each shot multiple times, from 6 to 19 times. The shooter had an assault weapon and multiple high capacity magazines.

Jon, I don't state anything until I've checked it out. I saw the video also, and he 1st said they weren't shot with a rifle, then he said they were, and when one of the reporters pointed out that the rifle was found in the car (which I saw the video of the officer taking the hunting rifle out of his trunk as well), he said no it wasn't and that the 'gunman' used a, wait, let me quote here, 'long gun' to shoot the children multiple times 'all over'. Is that enough fact checking for you? You're watching the media hype, not the factual videos from the first responders.

LittleGreenPuppet. Since you're too lazy to do your own investigation, here are a couple links to get you started.

Here you can see the cop not using gloves putting his hands all over the 'long gun' (you'll notice it does not resemble the Bushmaster .223 assault rifle the media & dems claim was used) the coroner spoke of that was found in the trunk of a vehicle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=wLrxSgkqJQc

Here you can hear the coroner say they were shot with the 'long weapon' and when a reporter points out that the 'long gun' was found in the trunk an officer denies that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meV0UYxhxeY

And here's the report where the FBI verified there were 4 handguns inside the school and the rifle they call the Bushmaster assault weapon in the trunk.

            purehearts,

How dare you try to minimize the heroism of a group of unarmed civilian educators in the face of a deranged killer who mowed down over two dozen innocent lives, most of them little children, all in the name of promoting your irrelevant story about the murder of a single, retired, professionally trained killer. What a shameful, amoral comparison.

            Shame on you.

...that's the problem, pal. And if it could happen in any school, then it's not just the past. It's the present, and the future.

Work on the freaking future so it doesn't happen again!!!

If you think about it, that's exactly what he is doing.

So, Mike, was there a break in your busy schedule at the Bottom Feeders' Convention that allowed you to post your blithering comments? You may want to put some actual thought into your next remark before you post it, you know. Just sayin'.

We stop, just every once in a while, to honor bravery as a way of holding it up as an example, so that we, as a nation, can have a better future. Read any comment section on any article that can be construed to be about guns and you will see that reflection is sorely needed.

That's what Texas is doing! I'm so proud of our legislature, they passed legislation to train CHL carriers to be present and on school campuses to protect our children. BTW, Chris Kyle was working with the schools to get them trained properly to protect our children, I think he does deserve at least a mention by the POTUS for doing SOMETHING other than take away good people's rights!

So, purehearts, you are saying your right to possess deadly toys trumps the right of children NOT to be gunned down in their classrooms? And teachers who are packing heat are going to stop assault rifle wielding "gun enthusiasts"? It says volumes about your lack of character.

Sailcat. I think your comments are nonsensical. What you're trying to say is a teacher with a weapon that has been trained by a sharp shooter, no, the MOST PROLIFIC sharpshooter, wouldn't be able to protect anybody from a felon with a gun? Did I get that right?

If you think teachers enter into their profession to become sharpshooters...or would tolerate being forced to try to become expert marksmen...you are definitely in desperate need of a slobber bib and some strong psychoactive medication. Damn.

Fortunately, I have never lost a friend or relative to a violent crime. How many people in the United States have succumbed to a violent death? Mothers and fathers protecting their children. Others protecting their charge. Mr. Obama is an opportunist and an exploiter. His soul purpose is to measure his success. He should be mourning death, not celebrating it.

Your right and wrong about Washington, you must let a sheriff inspect your semi auto weapon once a year, if it did not meet whatever standard of being secured it will be confiscated, so technically the 4th amendment would be violated as well as the 2nd

                http://www.examiner.com/article/washington-gun-control-proposal-said-to-violate-fourth-amendment-to-constitution

Oh and maybe I should have mentioned Minnesota is also pushing to confiscate.

Your linked article, which quotes from a Wordpress blog, not another publication, states "assault weapons", not all semi-automatic weapons. Now, lots of gun people like to parse the term assault weapons to death, but anyone with a slight degree of common sense knows that we are not talking about your standard semi-automatic hunting rifle with, say, an 8 bullet magazine. Futhermore, this is only a proposal that is likely to go nowhere in Washington. No one is confiscating guns in Washington state.

Are you the same Tom that said he couldn't wait for the civil war?

A question then. Do you believe that your 2nd and 4th amendment rights are currently being violated by the National Firearms Act of 1934 and Class 3 weapons licensing and inspection? Because that is what your article is basically saying.

Also have you found anywhere in proposed federal law where those of us with military style semi autos are going to have to submit to inspections like a class 3 or is that just a state to state thing? I have not so just wondering if you have.

Don't get me wrong I am against a ban but I am for getting guns out of criminals hands and reducing the number of shootings in this country. I am for helping law enforcement track down & prevent how guns get into the hands of those who use them illegally and I am open to your suggestions on how that can get accomplished.

So we should never honor true courage, because we will only be accused of exploitation by those who can't see past their own hate? Can Obama now do no act of kindness and serve no memorial to these brave people because you don't happen to agree with what you think his politics are? He can't pin a medal on a soldier who served in Afghanistan, he can't celebrate victories by our Olympic athletes, without you accusing him of exploitation. Can't you see how small your hatred has made your heart?

Maybe morons on the right can only do one thing at a time but talented people like our current administration can actually multi-task and get it all done if the aforementioned morons don't block them.

First, it was the Republican House that skipped town for their Christmas vacation early, now it's the Republican Senate that skipped town and went on vacation. How is the President supposed to get anything done when they are on vacation?

You know, it's funny, he did work on the economy today, right after he worked on national security and before discussing legislative strategy with his aides. He maybe even called a few foreign leaders. And he still found time for lunch and a ceremony honoring a few heroes. He's kind of amazing that way, but hey, that's what Presidents do. What did you do today, Tony?

Comment boards always include those postings that reveal the best and the worst of human nature. There must be researchers studying these things. My spirit is uplifted by the decent and loving words of one contributor but then dashed and beaten down by the snide, uncharitable words of another. I read these boards with more and more trepidation. Will I see enough of the good in humanity?

                      The Way It Goes,

It would seem that there are a small number of haters that seem to constantly post. As I have been spending more time here I've come to recognize more of the names and they are the same day in and day out. Makes me wonder if they have jobs based on the volume and times they post. Most hate Obama and will believe or say anything to reinforce that hate. It infects everything they say. But there are also a large number of those who either bait these haters or "hate the haters". I believe the Obama haters call them "libtards". Most of these hate posters seem to have stopped maturing somewhere around the 8th grade.

So stay encouraged, they post a great deal but they are small in number. The fringe always appears bigger than it is.
