Alberto Morales, convicted of kidnapping and sexual assault, stabbed one of two police escorts and escaped in the Dallas area as he was being transferred from Florida to Nevada, police said Tuesday. He was shot and killed by police early Saturday.
GRAPEVINE, Texas -- A Florida prisoner who escaped in Texas after stabbing a detective with his eyeglasses was shot and killed by law enforcement officers early Saturday after police responded to a report of a home burglary near Dallas, authorities said.
Alberto Morales was shot shortly after midnight when officers, with assistance from a police helicopter, spotted him in a wooded area near a lake in North Texas, Grapevine police Sgt. Robert Eberling said. Two hours earlier, officers responded to a report that jewelry and men's clothing had been stolen during a break-in at a home near where Morales was found.
Eberling said police officers and U.S. marshals were trying to apprehend Morales when he was shot, but he declined to say whether the fugitive had a weapon or made any threats toward them. He said Morales was still wearing part of his prison-issued jumpsuit as well as jogging pants, but Eberling said he couldn't comment on whether the stolen clothing and jewelry was found with him.
The residents arrived home around 10:30 p.m. Friday to discover the burglary at their home and called law enforcement officials, Eberling said.
The 42-year-old Morales escaped Monday at a Wal-Mart store parking lot in Grapevine, a community near the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Police said he used a sharp piece from his eyeglasses to stab a Miami-Dade detective who was transferring him by car to Nevada, where Morales was to serve a sentence of 30 years to life after being convicted of a sexual assault.
Det. Jaime Pardinas was expected to recover after being treated at a Dallas hospital for deep stab wounds to the neck, shoulder and back and a collapsed lung. It wasn't clear when he would be released.
Pardinas was accompanied by Miami-Dade Detective David Carrero during the transfer. They flew to Houston with Morales and then decided to drive the rest of the way after he became disruptive on the flight. They had stopped near the store while waiting for a third officer who was flying to the Dallas area to join them. Department policy requires three officers to be present for ground transfers of prisoners.
On a recording of a 911 call of the incident released Wednesday, Pardinas can be heard breathing heavily as he tells the operator that he's been stabbed. He described Morales' height, weight and appearance and then added, "He's a schizophrenic."
The escape set off a massive five-day manhunt in North Texas.

Congratulations to Texas Law-enforcment for taking down this dangerous criminal before he had an opportunity to commit any more violent crimes. Some people really are better off dead.

When you look at things realistically, you realize the faults of corrupt cops. When a cop shoots someone, anyone, to death, why would they decline information that would help their cause? Usually because they need to figure out a good lie, or find a "ham sandwich," to plant on the suspect/prisoner.
But I understand, some of you fear cops so much you believe anything they say.

I wear glasses when I shoot, but I don't think I'd start beating another shooter with only my glasses.

You don't reload? i have been for years. luckily i stocked up on GP a few years back. Sooner or later i will have to make that as well. They haven't gotten bad on primers yet so i stocked a bunch of those as well. Depending on your local range and their rules you can generaly get brass by the pound. course ya gotta take the good with the bad but if your collection shows true "diversity".. (lol) ....you can use most.

I used to reload more than now. Press and everything is in VA and I don't know how this happened, but like a great deal of "my stuff" it's all of a sudden the property of my son... uhmmmmm. LOL

Primers have been hard to come by in a lot of areas. I even spoke with some folks at SHOT Show that said they were being allocated shipments.
But I don't know any department that would take reloads anyway. Too many liability issues.
i use to get most of my brass from the local cops shooting range, they NEVER police the area.

GM Tramp. I hate going to the range and finding the steel cases.
When I go to the range and pick brass, the steel stays there, easy to spot and the rest gets binned according to size. If there is something wrong with it it goes to scrap metal. All the primers go to scrap metal as well. When I reload, if there is something odd about it at any step its off to scrap metal.
I had a hard time getting several thousand primers once, and to circumvent this when I found a place that had 10,000 in stock I would buy the lot. I never have run out since.

Actually I've been lucky lately and I haven't been to any of "those" places for a bit. But I'm still supporting and working with the younger gentlemen that do.
Fortunately, as far as food for the toys, I have a relatively large supply on hand. As I noted above, very unfortunately, my reloading gear is back in VA under the watchful care of my son. And he continually lets me know just how appreciative of everything I have (had?) stored there he is!!! I anticipate having to do some very serious shopping when I DO get back that way!

I've been to the Dallas area many times on business - high tech firms with very well-educated and trained people.

As a Texan, I can tell you that most of those "retarded" folks are yankees and carpetbaggers. Texas is one of the the fastest-growing states and Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio are all among the fastest-growing cities in the country. Those are all ignorant northerners that are filling up the state. And as for Rick Perry being a moron or whatever, who is the prize pig of your state? Don't fall for the left/right nonsense, I'll bet that your governor and any other politicians in your state are similarly just as worthless. With that said though, one thing Bush and Perry knew how to do was attract business, which brought more people to the state, which created more revenue for the state, and whose economy individually is growing and doing really well.

If they required that many officers to transport him AND he was a known schizophrenic shouldn't they have had their act together prior to leaving the confines of the jail? "Yeah let's just wait here in this crowded public parking lot and do it". Stupid, stupid, stupid!! The cops are lucky nobody else got stabbed or killed. Hopefully they find desk jobs for them so they don't go around releasing dangerous criminals into the public again. Too bad they couldn't resurrect him a bit and use his still twitching carcass down at the range for some excellent target practice.
