Florida man reunited with stolen dog used as fighting bait

Ten months after a German shepherd was stolen from Bob Moreland’s Miramar, Fla., home, the canine is back in his owner's loving arms after a horrifying ordeal.

Tears of joy streamed down Moreland’s face when he was reunited with the dog, Black Jack.

“I didn’t know I’d ever see him again,” said Moreland, a retired Air Force sergeant.

Somehow, Black Jack ended up wandering around Century Village in Pembroke Pines. Laurie Simmons, the president of Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Wellington, was notified and sent volunteer Eric Weinberger to help bring the dog to safety.

But when Weinberger arrived, he was alarmed by what he saw.

Read more at NBCMiami.com

“I saw this God-awful collar around his neck I’ve never seen before,” Weinberger said. “Laurie told me it was a collar used for bait dog in a dog-fighting ring.”

Black Jack was being used as a bait dog, and a chain with raw meat also had been attached to his neck to lure dogs to fight. The dog was maimed.

“The collar had worn through his skin,” said Dr. Susan Baker. “It was so tight it had imbedded into his flesh.”

The volunteers and staff worked to nurse the dog back to health and reunite him with his owner. The dog’s implanted microchip led them to Moreland.

And now, Moreland and volunteers at the rescue try to erase the horror Black Jack endured.

Now safe from harm, the dog is on the road to recovery.

GM Stonepipe.

Perhaps the people responsible for that "bait collar with raw meat" on it will get a chance to try it on for size, so the Bustard/POS that stole Black Jack can truly witness AND experience the terror and pain by that Black Jack did!

Glad to see Black Jack and Bob Moreland reunited - think Black Jack deserves a few nice and juicy T-Bone steak? I do!

GM Jack. When we were a full service farm if a dog killed a chicken it was an accepted practice to tie the dead chicken around it's neck till it fell off. Never a repeat offender, not once. Do you think it would apply today with our less than law abiding citizens? Again, glad you found some time to post, take care. I'm off.

No terror, no pain, simply a bullet into the brain for the people who do this. They can dig the hole. Give them one chance to get on their knees and to make peace with whatever god they use and then pull the trigger.

So many horror stories come out of Florida, we would all be graced if the whole state fell into the ocean altogether.

Jack from Jax,

You said it all for me. If only the public and police would get involved to insure these monsters were brought to this brand of justice. I would ad to this to say that aLL types of Terror crimes including pedophiles are subjected to the same level of terror they impose on children.

Thanks,

Well, we pretty much have a consensus. We could assemble quite a team to hunt down the sub-humans who engage in dog-fighting . . . .all of them.

There's really no need a hole for them, take them out to the Everglades for execution. Or wait. Are there places where sharks hang off the coast of Florida? Blood on the water.

Florida is far from being the only state in the union with dog fighting and the use of bait animals. It's all over the country.

The House of Representatives is in the process of voting for a bill (that the Senate already passed) that will charge spectators and people who bring minors to dog fights. Can you imagine bringing a KID to one of these things?

A lot of the problem is that people are aware of this happening and don't turn it in. We can do it anonymously. When we see ANY kind of abuse, we need to turn it in. Make the laws we have work.

blueunicorn and all: Reps. Tom Marino (R-PA) and Betty Sutton (D-OH) have introduced H.R. 2492, the Animal Fighting Spectator Prohibition Act. Their bill makes knowingly attending an animal fight punishable by fines and up to a year in prison. Also, recognizing that exposure to animal cruelty - especially the egregious brutality of animal fighting - can desensitize children to violence at an early age, the Bill makes it a separate offense, with even higher penalties, to knowingly bring a minor to such an event. This common-sense legislation will improve efforts to rid our communities of this cruel and dangerous crime.

Please write your legislators and tell them to vote in favor of The Animal Fighting Spectator Prohibition Act.

We owned a Shepard for12 years and had to finally put him to sleep due to hip problems. That was a heart-breaker for us to have to do. I remember the vet telling us when we finally brought him in that he wonder how much longer it would be before we would finally make that decision. I remember laying on the floor with him and holding his head in my lap before the injections. He just kept looking at me as though he knew all along what it was about. He died moments later in my lap. It left me numb for days knowing what I had done.

So I can definitely understand how this guy must of felt to get his best friend back. It's a sad story with a beautiful ending.

These dog fighting people better hope I never catch them in the act. I won't call 911 and there won't be any survivors to make that call either. It seems this is but another issue of our wonderful illegal population, although I know full well the scum Vick was also a perp. Nothing less than death for anyone caught would make me happy. And YES an animals life is worth MUCH MORE than the scum that put on dog fights.

Glad to see this dog made it back home.

I really like the idea Jkatze proposed. Let the gators have them and they will die knowing how it feels to be torn to pieces by the teeth of an animal planning on eating them.

Screw 10 years, screw hard labor, hell, screw gators.

Round them up and make them fight to the death for the amusement of others. Tell them the winner can walk right out the door so they have motivation. When a victor emerges, stay true to your word: take his too-tight collar off, nudge him towards the exit, and THEN sick the dogs on him.

Does this sound inhumane, twisted? The sad thing is, it's merely the punishment fitting the crime visited upon these animals. The difference is the animals didn't deserve this.

I agree with many above and find this beyond deplorable. What I find to more sad or tragic than most is that many of us - raised properly and with morals, stability, and values - would never think of this yet some other human animals not only do but find it acceptable. Is it a failed system when monsters are allowed to be raised to be such? Is it failed family units, systems? Is it simply that some human animals aren't fit to be amongst the 7 billion plus population?

I strongly submit the suggestion that those that do or would engage in this practice aren't far if not on par with such desensitization that other human animals, too, are in extreme danger if in contact with these creatures. Obviously a dog lover myself, and an advocate of many animals being equal to human animals (though some claim superiority rights for x,y, and z reasons.... bs) and in many ways some better in important aspects - very important aspects - I see this as more than a warning sign of what we've become, what we're capable of, and have always taught my daughters to be more than wary. Nowadays, it's not enough to give benefit of doubt but to be suspect of all; perhaps not the happiest or Sesame street way to live, but important in reality.

Give me these scum.... I've a few plans for them.

Glad Black Jack was reunited with his owner. People that do this type of thing should lose their status as human beings and shot immediately.

With regards to legislation, a fine and a year in prison is nothing. Seize all their property, sell it at auction, and sign an agreement with Russia to put them in a GULAG camp where no human rights exist and they can work in a salt mine til they are dead.

Until there is real, severe, and swift punishment for this type of conduct, it will continue. Currently, the laws addressing animal abuse are so weak that no serious punishment is available. What's a slap on the wrist to the people who do these kinds of things? They think abuse is is an acceptable way of life and are usually beyond rehabilitation. Usually, the only solution is to keep them behind bars for as long as possible so as to prevent them from harming a trusting, defenseless animal again.

To be a member of the human race is an honor and comes with an enormous amount of responsibility, with one of those responsibilities being the kind and humane treatment of all other creatures. If you fail in your responsibilites or bring harm to those who are less fortunate or otherwise defenseless, then you have forfeited your right to live and walk freely among the rest of us.

We all know the world is a better place when we as a people are kind to and treasure our animals.

Thank goodness for the wonderful people who were involved in Black Jack's rescue and reunification with his owner. Fantastic job!!!!!!!!!!!!

stonepipe2 and rachel, as dog fighting is mostly redneck or gang related (and not just black gangs, so don't go there), bitching about liberals isn't going to persuade me. You like a pissing contest, but you forget that you need to clean up your own backyard before you take on anyone else. Yes, there are definitely dog fighting rings all over the country. From what I see as I go through the rescue posts I get on Facebook to share dogs that have been used as bait or for fighting, an awful lot of the people getting busted are white. So this is a societal problem, it is a mindset problem that comes from people thinking that it is okay to hurt the innocent in the name of entertainment and money.

Cops already know who is suspected of fighting dogs. A friend of mine had her dog stolen and she had a collar, license and microchip on her. She is a full blood pit who never had been in a fight. My friend continued and annoyed the police so much that she found out that there is one officer on duty to help find these dogs..Her dog was found a week later UNDER a house where she was to be used for breeding! Funny thing is these dummies didn't know the dog was spayed as a pup, but the officer found the dog without too much of a problem! They know where these fights are ran...they don't act on it!

Not only is it horrible for the dogs, but the poor animals they use for bait, regardless of what kind they use it is sheer terror for the animals. Then they get away with it and can do it all over again after paying a fine or whatever little slap they got on their wrists! Disgusting! Cringe worthy first amendment ruling

Supreme Court says fetish videos depicting animal cruelty deserve free speech protections

      By McClatchy Newspapers
      Published: 21 April 2010

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that even videos that depict wanton animal cruelty deserve free-speech protections under the First Amendment.

In an 8-1 decision that united the court's liberal and conservative wings, the justices struck down a law that was enacted in response to so-called crush videos, supposedly designed to satisfy bizarre sexual cravings. The court said the law, however well-intentioned, went too far.

"Maybe there are some categories of speech that have been historically unprotected," Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the majority, "but if so, there is no evidence that depictions of animal cruelty is among them."

The ruling means that animal cruelty won't be added to obscenity, fraud and the handful of other categories of constitutionally unprotected speech.

"The majority opinion shows that the current court, although frequently described as politically conservative, continues to take free-speech protections seriously," said lawyer Andy Tauber, who filed an amicus brief in the case.

Roberts, quoting in part from a congressional report, explained that crush videos often show women "slowly crushing animals to death 'with their bare feet or while wearing high-heeled shoes,' sometimes while 'talking to the animals in a kind of dominatrix patter' over 'the cries and squeals of the animals.' "

Solicitor General Elena Kagan had asked the justices to balance the value of the speech against its societal cost. But Roberts rejected that notion as "startling and dangerous."

thank you for the info on your post, i was unaware , as i'm certain the majority of the public are too, this transpired, it's apalling, but does give a tremendous insight to the the continued cruelty and abuse we as humans inflict upon each other, what purpose does that kind of freedom accomplish? nothing would be the correct answer, if these so called crush videos were shown with people crushing people ....no wait, they would no doubt be popular too, deemed to be protected by some obscure amendment protecting a persons right to be a dangerous pervert, and as disgusting as the black jack story is, and it is, i agree these people deserve no justice, i wonder how many of the outraged people posting on this sight have ever been to a slaughterhouse and watched how we kill chickens and othe livestock, i wonder if they will have bacon for breakfast this morning?

          #22.1 - Mon Feb 18, 2013 9:20 AM EST

The ruling makes no sense at all. A person could violate animal cruelty laws if they are caught in the act of cruelty, and have animal cruelty charges brought against them. But a RECORDING of the cruelty has no repercussions? A RECORDING of the animal cruelty is totally okay?

And what does this say about our society? It says we are okay with cruelty. It means we will allow this to happen.

This ruling comes from the highest court in the land, the Supreme Court. The case worked its way all the way up to the Supreme Court, and our highest appointed judges say a recording of animal cruelty is okay.

This is very sad and disturbing.

I would love to see dog lovers unite and be given the right to hunt down the POS that do these kind of crimes. Public flogging is too good for them but since it is south Fla. buried up to the neck in a pile of fire ants should take care of them permanently. Humane? Not really. Eye for an eye.

When are we ever going to get serious about these dog fighting rings? I can't believe people actually can do this. Do they have no soul?

In a suburban home, I don't have a fenced in yard and in the winter it's bitter cold. Anytime I let my little girl out to go potty in the yard I keep a close eye on her.

South Florida, Arizona (where I live), Texas southern border...you get the drift. For the minority of "them" it is considered a sport. They bring shame to the majority. I have two golden retrievers who don't know they are dogs...they think they are fur-people. Spoiled rotten. :-)

I have 12 rescue dogs and they all think they are human beings. Spoiled rotten with their own pillows, beds, blankets and God knows how many toys. We separated our yard into 3 areas, one for running, one for podo and one to bask in the sun. I should have it so good. I hate people who abuse animals and would not feel bad about, well lets just say, getting even with them.

My dog always goes out on a leash, we wouldn't make her go out on her own, even when it's 7 degrees F, like this morning. Too many things can harm a nice dog, including the chorus of coyotes that was howling Friday night. I couldn't imagine my sweet yellow Lab (or anyone's pet!) as a "bait dog". Love those microchips, too.
