Sources: Ex-cop Dorner tried to charm fishermen into taking him to Mexico

Ex-LAPD officer-turned-fugitive Christopher Dorner, who went on a deadly shooting rampage and then died after a shootout and fire last week, first tried to charm fishermen in San Diego’s Driscoll Wharf into giving him a ride to Mexico, sources said.

Dorner, 33, led authorities on a massive manhunt after allegedly killing an Irvine couple and a Riverside police officer in a crime spree across Southern California that began on Feb. 3.

Dorner's deadly crimes were allegedly part of a revenge-filled plot he outlined in an online manifesto targeting law enforcement officers and their families.

Authorities searched for Dorner all over Southern California -- from Irvine to National City -- and led extensive checkpoints at the San Ysidro border, believing Dorner was trying to flee into Mexico.

Fishermen at Driscoll Wharf told NBC 7 exclusively that Dorner was on the pier near Nimitz and Harbor Island Drive on Feb. 5 trying to charm his way into a boat ride to Mexico.

“He kept saying he wanted to go fishing off Mexico. I said ‘Mexico? That’s kinda weird. You could go fishing on the bay,’” said Jeremy Smith, a local commercial fisherman.

Smith spoke exclusively with NBC 7 on Saturday night.

Smith and others at the dock said Dorner was willing to pay $200 to $400 for someone to take him out to sea. He told the fishermen he was going to be deployed to Afghanistan and just wanted to go fishing in Mexico first.

But at this pier, far away from popular fishing charters, most people were making repairs on their boats, not ready to go to sea.

Smith offered to show him around a luxury yacht that was for sale docked at the pier. But he asked him to remove the military style boots Dorner was wearing to keep the white carpeting clean. Dorner declined.

"Maybe he had a gun," Smith guessed. "Usually people want to see inside."

Dorner's request for a ride surprised some local fishermen, including Roy Sherman.

“I’ve been down here for 40 years and he’s the first guy that came down here and asked for a ride,” said Sherman.

San Diego Police Lt. Andra Brown said she was not aware of this particular Dorner sighting in San Diego.

“We’re not going to discuss details of an ongoing investigation,” Brown said, and referred questions about the incident to the Irvine Police Department.

Several other law enforcement sources -- not in the San Diego Police Department -- confirmed the man described by local fishermen was likely Dorner.

Dorner did spend time in San Diego between Feb. 4 and Feb. 6.

Gift of fish tacos
A surveillance video taken behind an auto parts store in National City on Feb. 4 shows Dorner tossing bullets, a uniform and other items that linked him to the Irvine double-homicide into a dumpster.

After spending an hour at the pier the next day, the fishermen said Dorner left, but returned with fish tacos for Smith, hoping that would convince the fisherman to help him find a charter.

The witnesses reported Dorner was very friendly, always with a smile on his face, calling himself "Mike."

The man who called himself "Mike" told Smith a story about a friend who was having problems with the police and said his friend had been fired.

"I think he was talking about himself, now that I think about it," added Smith.

Dorner eventually left peacefully without his ride to Mexico, the group of fisherman said.

Driscoll Wharf is adjacent to Naval Base San Diego on North Harbor drive.

Smith said Dorner returned to the wharf on Feb. 6 but still couldn't find anyone to take him to Mexican waters.

That same day, a man fitting Dorner’s description tried to steal a boat from a San Diego marina, according to officials. An 81-year-old man on the boat was tied up but uninjured. The would-be boat thief was unable to steal the boat and fled.

Karen and Jim Reynolds came face to face with Christopher Dorner when they arrived at their Big Bear cabin to clean it out for renters. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

Later that night, police issued Dorner's description, and the fishermen said they notified authorities of their encounter.

On Sunday, fishermen on Pier 6 at Driscoll Wharf are amazed the kind man who brought them fish tacos on Feb. 5 was the dangerous fugitive accused of fatally shooting four people, including a police officer and a sheriff’s deputy.

The 10-day manhunt for Dorner ended on Feb. 12.

After barricading himself in a Big Bear-area cabin, he died of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department officials said. That cabin went up in flames during a shootout between Dorner and officers, and the fugitive's charred remains were later found inside.

This guy wasn't very smart for a cop. Getting to Mexico should have been easy.

Unless he was trying to put the authorities off his trail, by making it look like he was going to Mexico. But that's not very smart either, because they weren't about to stop looking for him, or stop guarding his intended targets.

He must have lost it, if he thought killing people would clear him. And unfortunately, he killed innocent people.

Goes to show the kind of nuts they employ as police. There's a reason so much abuse happens at the hands of police. His claims against the other officer were probably true, that's why they fired him. For exposing them.

Just how does a black guy charm a fisherman. I think the headline is stupid. At least he didn't just take their boat at gunpoint. The cops would have.

More, nobody said he was a thinking very clearly.

You can thank the diversity hiring practices forced on police departments across the country for having less then desireable people on the force. When you have to have a certain percentage of minorities and women which means skipping over more capable canidates this is what you get.

It's always interesting to see someone think a man who is capable of going on a killing spree isn't capable of lieing about something. Dorner's actions and testimony pretty much shows he made up the story about his training officer.

The guy is dead, they killed him, and they are still trying to justify their actions? Tells me something isn't right with the whole deal. A guy who they SAY murdered cop's, and a couple of other people, was trying to CHARM a fisherman into taking him to Mexico? OK, why would a guy who has already (they say) murdered a cop and a couple of civilians all of a sudden not just commandeer a boat and it's crew/owner into Mexico, why turn nice all of a sudden?

OK, he's gone, lets talk about the 71 year old Hispanic lady who you'll shot twice in the back because her Royal Blue Toyota Tacoma looked like a Gray Nissan Titan! At last report she wasn't doing well, but LAPD chief said they were going to buy her a new truck. How's that for an ignorant department.

Moshuluu

Something isn't right with you, who is they"" in your rhetorical question? Are you not now reading script published on a NEWSVINE?? Would this not be the media? So that means you accuse the media of killing Donser? You must be because its the media that's printing information as they obtain it from witnesses. This is not a police report; and what is it you say is being justified?? Killing an armed man shooting at police who in fact just killed one? That's full justification to anyone who believes in justice, or would have invited him for tea and crumpets while he is reloading? It wasn't just stated "said" Donser dumped the evidence, it was on VIDEO! Sorry for your luck moshuluu but your new Hero is a Murdering Coward who couldn't handle any type of discipline. His own dossier described he hated his teachers as early as grade 1 for telling him even back then he can't beat people up just because he felt like it; BTW - he felt like he was wronged by the teachers for stopping him then also.... got the real picture now?

Dorner was a good cop...the bad cops are the one who assulted that suspect after he was cuffed and on the ground, and all the cops who railroaded Dorner to cover up for her...they fired him because he "crossed the blue line" by telling another cop...so tell me what you think of this "blue line"...it's no different then criminals saying "snitches are bitches"...aren't the cops suppose to be ENFORCING the laws and not BREAKING them? good honest cops should not have a "blue line" to cross!

moshuluu, #1.7- I think you're exactly right. THEY WRONGFULLY KILLED HIM. (Purposefully entrapping him in a burning building to force him to either kill himself, which they had more than a reasonable knowing expectation that he would be driven to do, or be killed; when any way you slice and dice it, from the very beginning he was trying to "defend himself" from what he was being driven to do by the LAPD). That's the real starting point that subsequent actions, no matter what they were, don't preclude or change the true starting point from being what it is, trying to dend himself from LAPD's actions. The LAPD literally drove him out of his mind and they, not He, are responsible for what he did, AFTER THAT point. They, the LAPD, made the gesture to re-open the investigation, BUT, not until AFTER IT WAS TOO LATE to be a remedy to how far over the edge they had already driven him. Even thiese "alleged" actions of trying to get to Mexico are consistent, only, with trying to "defend" himself by trying to flee.

I hope the Family clears his name and sues LAPD and the Ones at the cabin for UNconstitutional "pre-judicially pre-meditated" Cruel and Unusual Punishment and WRONGFUL DEATH that THEY CAUSED to result in.

It was a sad day as I know from experience he more than likely didn't kill himself thats's the same thing cops said about my father Sammie Clay here in Las Vegas after a shootout and suposed barricade. what is more sad is that he let those dirty cops drive him to his fate and untimely death I pray for his family because what drove him to his rage was him attempting to protect and serve. Why can cops kill unjustly and have no remorse but, if it was a citizen he is a criminal and if he make it out alive he will be handed a hundred year sentence. It will be a year on St. Patricks day that I lost my father and my uncle and besides the fire my father met his untimely death as well same type of suicide barricade cover up. I say they were wrong for firing him because some cop chick wants to abuse her power by kicking a handcuffed citizen rather a thug or not a person in the head . Don't take stories like this for granted and don't be so quick to judge it could be someone in your family one day. My Dad was a great Dad and Grandfather and he is dearly missed every day and when I pass by his still bullet riddled house I wonder will I ever find peace or justice for a sittuation that could have been prevented if these cops didn't think that they were God. My prayers goes out to the families for their lost and the cops that enduce the pain.

He wanted to run away to Mexico without accomplishing what he set out to do. COWARD. He failed again, in life and his "endeavors", whatever those were. He was angry at everyone all of his life but relied on revenge to rectify himself. He finally realized he could rectify his problems by just killing himself. Another easy way out.

To the police responsible for making the decision to burn dorner alive in a trapped cabin....How can u live with yourself after killing-what i believe to be- an innocent man. I dont believe he killed that couple because his behavior when he was on the run are not consistent with a cold-blooded murderer. He was kind to the fishermen and he allowed the couple and the man with his dog to not only live but he didn't even consider taking one of them hostages to ensure his own safety. I believe dorner was set up for that couple being murdered ...and we all knew u wouldn't allow dorner to live to tell his side of the story. I am a little traumatized from watching via the web u people burning dorner alive in that cabin. i cant get the image of him burning alive inside that cabin out of my head. I seriously think i'm suffering from ptsd from just being exposed to this whole ordeal. I now fear police. I no longer feel safe with u people. If u guys even have a conscious, how can u look yourselfs in the mirror everyday living with what u did to that man. U not only ruined his career and ruined the relationships with the close people in his life, u condemned him to a henious death without even giving him the chance to prove himself innocent. I just have one scripture from god's word that applys to u (Luke 8:17) "FOR NOTHING IS SECRET THAT WILL NOT BE REVEALED, NOR ANYTHING HIDDEN THAT WILL NOT BE MADE KNOWN AND COME TO LIGHT"

Dorner would have had a chance to tell his side of the story in court. Y'know, being on trial for murdering people and all.

I'm not saying he wasn't wrongly terminated, but because he tried to solve his problem with murder I have much less sympathy, if any at all.

He was also shooting at the police when the cabin burned down. He killed an officer and injured another. I guess you don't care whether the police are shot and killed?

I am with Teresa. I said it from the begining. A cold blooded killer doesnt charm anyone, unless he's making them a victim. He could have killed the guy and tried to start his boat. Then you have an 81 year old who was "tied up" instead of murdered. Dorner wasn't a cold blooded killer. Did anyone say Ted Bundy charmed them then tied them up? Did Dahmer charm anyone then buy them lunch and walk away? The truth will never be known, but there is so much more to the story than just the LAPD's side.

So he killed how many again? I don't think not killing somebody makes up for killing somebody, just saying.

TrueBelief, Teresa, Serial killers and psychopaths often are very charming. They've learned to charm others in order to mask dark intentions. Keep in mind Manson literally had a cult of followers - sounds pretty charming. Dahmer and Bundy were actually famous for being very charming. Your entire philosophy is out of whack... and it's kind of hilarious that your examples you chose to use are literally the proof against your argument.

Because he prove once again that all the police, FBI, TSA, AFT etc can't protect me, or find a peep who is hiding in pain sight. All the money we spend on police protection really is a waste. No cop has ever prevented a crime, they show up and then try to find the peeps. Kind of like there brother and sisters in the teachers union, who do anything but teacher our childern.

and what would you say about the female cop who kicked the sh*t out of an already subdued suspect who was cuffed and laying on the ground? and what would you say about all the cops who helped cover her ass and railroad Dorner out of his career?

How does a big ugly black guy on a murdering rampage charm a Mexican fisherman into taking him on a boat ride to Mexico? I don't think so. It would have been at gun point.

Dorner going to Mexico, that's a given, isn't that the place to run to, if you screw up in the U.S. He then could get hired by the drug cartel.

He knew they [police] were waiting for him at the boarder, and airports, train stations, Just think if we could get the police to work this fast in cleaning up our local bad boy gang's, no'p can't seem to pull every one in on a major gang hunt.

I do not condone killing IF Dorner killed those people (do we know the facts in this case?)---he has not had a trial to prove guilt or innocence--he was executed without due process. This is what has alarmed many people--also that the cops were so rabid in killing him they were willing to shoot inocent people. Something is wrong here--especialy with all the people on this site that are willing to give up their civil rights to allow the cops to murder people without a trial.

Thanks for having a stable mind there is no way I think that they should have the right to seek and execute. My father house was shot over 29 times and after they dumped 4 canisters of tear gas then left him in his home to die for four hours before they removed his body and did not contact his family only for the coroner to keep him from us this world is turning into a real life Revalation

Everyone knows that the LAPD is one of the most corupt departments in the nation, has been for years. While I don't condone the killing of another human being for any reason, Because of the publicity of this case and the manefesto that was made public, Dorner was NEVER going to get out of this alive. Thus the reason for trying to go to Mexico, At least then he may have had a chance to make it through this alive. Shame on the LAPD and their corupt ways. I don't believe for 1 second that he took his own life. Why else do you believe that the media was blocked from live video coverage.

There is such a thing as due process. The LAPD acted like Judge, Prosecutor, Jury, and Executioner. Go stick your head back in that hole you must live in.

Corrupt police departments, no I can't beleive that. Listen any lack of public service worker union member is corrupt. Teachers at the head of the list, all they care about is increasing membership, more phat stack of money and benefits, and doing less work if that was possible. And who are the unions number one supporters and enablers, why the Dumbocrat party.

My point exactly it is nothing to hide then why hide isn't the point to prosecute and get justice not murder unless directed by a judge for the death penalty so who are the judges the cops that decide rather you live or die point is anyone of us could snap does that mean we don't deserve to live??? Our fate should not be in the hand of the cops but, the hand of the law it was a hit and somehow I knew that he would never make it out alive because cops now days are trained to kill us. He done wrong he did kill people but is it ok for the cops to be just as criminal as a criminal????

there is no evidence because dirty cops hide it all! that's why this whole thing started...Dorner tried to expose a dirty cop and they fired him and covered it up!

Same thing they did to my Dad a year ago "he shot himself after he barricaded himself in his own home" as I ride by my Dad's bullet riddled house and as I hear this news of another person who has no kind of voice I am their voice I will speak. He was fired because he spoke up when an officer put her heavy boot in some guy's head who was handcuffed now if that's not dirty they made it into some kind of story of him not being fond of her when he was doing what not alot of cops do...... Serve and Protect! I'd rather die before I beleive them or in them. I am a daughter of a man who hugged me and kissed me and his last words were "i love you" an hour before he was killed google it same story damn near different guy same fate Sammie Clay was my father and he couldn't even see his 57th birthday this year I been traumitized and I will fight for my Dad he was not perfect who is? I care though and I hope we all wake up even the neo nazis of the world ,no killing is justified in the eyes of the Lord!

As for Dorner, I'm glad the POS is dead. I've had bad bosses and been laid off from jobs but you don't see me killing people.

I think what happened to him was a little more then being "laid off"...he was a good cop...did the right thing by turning in another officer for BREAKING THE LAW...and instead of punishing her they fired him and covered up her crime...i would hardly compare that to simply being "laid off"

no what he did was NOT logical...it was WRONG...but i can UNDERSTAND why he flipped out...he is dead now...the discussion about what he did should be over...now everyone needs to focus on everything the LAPD did to him to make him flip out...and this "blue line" they refer to needs to be investigated...it's basically the same as common criminals saying "snitches are bitches"...it means that officers are never suppose to tell on fellow officers if they see them break the law...they are NOT ALLOWED to break the law to inforce the law...they are REQUIRED to play by the rules...and railroading whistle blowers out of the force is NOT acceptable...we CANNOT just drop this and forget about it just because Dorner is dead...if we do there will be other victims like Dorner...and YES Dorner was a victim...it in no way justified what did...but he was a victim
