South Floridians who happened to be looking in the right place at the right time Sunday night saw one spectacular light show – possibly a sporadic meteor.
The Coast Guard began getting flooded with phone calls about 7:30 p.m., with reports of folks seeing flare-like objects from Jacksonville to Key West, according to Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Sabrina Laberdesque.
People called in, describing the flares “as orange or red fireballs in the sky,” Laberdesque said. The display was limited to the sky: No injuries were reported, Laberdesque said.
A sporadic meteor is basically a rocky object that comes from the asteroid belt, said Mike Hankey, operations manager for the American Meteor Society, based in Genesee, N.Y. The group logged 27 reports within about the first two hours of the event, he said.
"This is a lot of reports to come in quickly," Hankey said.
Gauging by the reports, it happened somewhere over the ocean.
"These fireballs are common," Hankey said. "It’s rare for any one person to see one more than once or twice in their lifetime. But on any given night, it might happen somewhere in the globe a few times in a day."
Hankey added: "People should not be scared of the sky falling or anything at all."
Amanda Mayer, of West Palm Beach, said she saw something in the sky and said she thought it was somebody flashing a light. She said she hit record on her camera.
"I was like, 'Wow! That's weird," Mayer said. "I just started videotaping, and that's when it happened."
It turned out to be good timing: The ball of light appeared as she recorded, she said.
"I was pretty sure it was a meteor because of everything else that's been happening," Mayer said.
The Coast Guard said it had suspected Sunday's sighting was a meteor shower, but Hankey disagreed. "Meteor showers usually are much dimmer and faster moving," Hankey said.
After a meteor exploded overhead near Chelyabinsk, Russia, on Friday, reportedly injuring more than 1,000 people, many people elsewhere in the world have wrongly thought that streaks they've seen in the sky, including planes, are meteors, Hankey said.
Traveling at 33,000 mph, a massive meteor hit the Earth's atmosphere creating a giant shockwave that blew out windows of glass, injuring nearly 1,000 people and creating panic. On the same day, an asteroid half the size of a football field came within 17,000 miles from Earth. NBC's Tom Costello reports.
"We’re getting a lot more false reports," Hankey said.
But with false reports, the group tends to receive only one report describing an incident, Hankey said. If the same event is reported over and over in five or 10 minutes, then that’s more likely to be "a legitimate event,” or sporadic meteor, Hankey said.
In South Florida Sunday night, the Coast Guard found that the light streak vanished in an instant. The Coast Guard sent out a helicopter to check out a report of a flare near the MacArthur Causeway in Miami, but found nothing there, Laberdesque said.

Seems like something big is on the way?? All of sudden big meteors nobody knew about coming down over Russia?? When a star goes supernova all that material is ejected into space, can travel millions of miles per hour, over the farthest reaches of space and BOOM...oops we missed that huge Maine sized iron rock. We really need to think about colonizing the moon or Mars just so if an event happens Man doesn't follow the same fate as Barney did.
The coolest meteor I have ever seen was in Colorado about four or five years ago...just melting across the sky which seemed like several minutes I was awe struck..then I found out is was that Russian rocket or satellite and I was a little bummed but it was still amazing. Another time at band camp..actually in Kern River over the pass we were waiting for some friends, as we were on a bullet bike, on the side of the road and all of sudden this shooting star is coming right at us. We all in fact ducked down because of how close it seemed it was amazing..then after that I stuck a flute in my butt. Sorry couldn't resist.
This is the one I saw. When I was stationed at Mt. Home AFB in Idaho. 1st thought is was one of our planes on fire.

Mankind can't colonize Mars because what little atmosphere it does have (less than 1% of Earths) is almost all CO2.
Worse is that Mars cannot hold a true atmosphere as it has no magnetic field in which to deflect the solar wind so any atmosphere we try to add would just be brushed aside by the solar wind.
Why is it people with no education make these comments?
Goodness gracious great balls of fire!
meth lab blew up...real good...
If you're a Jedi, what are you worried about?
flno, I saw one like that in northern Arkansas during the summer of 1970. It's an amazing thing to watch when they just cut through the atmosphere for a few seconds. I thought it was a jet at first then realized it was traveling at an enormous speed.
gizmo, I feel your pain. But, when you consider that most people never read a book once they get out of high school or get their GED, it's not surprising. In fact, most people never even watch a science program on TV. Yep, all morons left behind.
So if the end is nigh, and the mother of all meteors is on its way to impact earth. Do you REALLY this this (or ANY) government would tell us plebs?
Hell no: Anarchy would break out all over the place.
I am not an astronomer or study space but this makes sense to me.
At some time in the past something "blew up" and all those little rocks and things are floating around in the same orbit and the earth is now going through those items. Here a rock. There a rock. Everywhere a little rock.
So I am not surprised and confused why the "official" notices say the Russia meteor and the big one that just passed us is a "cosmic coincidence". Sorry, I don't believe in "coincidences".
I just hope there isn't a "big rock" the size of Rhode Island with a bulls eye for a field in Nebraska. THAT would not be good...........
Why are you worrying about the world will end? Didn't the Flying Spaghetti Monster provide the exact details on how that will go down? If you are a loyal FSM worshiping person you should be happy about it!
Sporadic meteor, maybe, piece of space junk falling back to earth, could be. End of the world or precursor of things to come as some have asserted, I seriously doubt it. A reason for some to spout their self conceived, baseless hatred of religion, absolutely. Seems the extreme atheists need little provocation to sound off about religion no matter how far fetched and ridiculous those opinions might be. "Flying spaghetti monster",,,,,,,, now that's a new one,,,,, Rage on EA trolls, even though you only really petty.
Flying Spaghetti Monster, Chris? Exact Details? Do tell!
Google is your friend Joe S...
gizmowiz, in this case, you need to think inside the box. With enough infrastructure and technology, a small civilization could be maintained on Mars under domes. There are enough resources there (most likely) to manufacture oxygen, and once a number of biodomes are established, you could create a fully enclosed, self-sustaining environment. You'd only need to create the infrastructre needed to maintain the structure itself (glass, aluminum, steel, etc.) Not an easy challenge, but still within the realm of possibility. It might even be easier to create all this underground (better shielding from radiation, less likelihood of a sudden blowout, etc).
I wouldnt be too worried about mankind there Jedi. Of one of the two things we hve learned to do well one of them is procreate. The other being to kill each other.
A well known science fact that any object similar to the recent nearby passing asteroid will attract and disengage an object from the asteroid belt.
Flying Spaghetti Monster? - Sticks and stones...., well I know names don't/won't hurt my Father and His Son in Heaven, but try not to get too mad when he laughs and mocks at your calamity when it comes because you wouldn't listen.
gizmowiz,
Mankind can colonize Mars. I'll stop short of calling you an idiot. Well, I guess I already have.
I have to ask then, if an impact was certain what difference would it make? If it was a world ender what's the need for keeping secrets? You are correct though it would be anarchy. Sadly.
A bit presumptuous of you there, John, to assume I was referring to YOUR deity. I was referring to my own of course. That's the problem with you Christians, you think you have a monopoly on Gods.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Spaghetti_Monster
I TOLD YOU the sky was falling....
Make no mistake. There is no monopoly. There is only One True God, and there is no other.
No one would have believed that in the early years of the 21st century that this planet was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences far greater than our own...intellects, cold, cruel and unsympathetic, slowly and surely drew their plans against us.
Let's test that John. Let's each pray as hard as we can to our respective gods, and see which one of us ends up with a nice piping hot plate of Fettuccine Alfredo first!
@John...if you've got "God's" phone number, please tell him to stop throwin' rocks at us. It's mean.
and...
@Jedi...I think I remember you from band camp. You were the kid that always walked funny weren't you, but man, you did some awesome renditions of some Jethro Tull tunes while we sat around the campfire roastin' marshmallows. lol
People fear the unknown...Everyone will have thier own opinion of what is happening...Because of computers we are reading more news about whats going on around the world. I`m sure this has happened many times before but wasn`t video taped or posted..Thank god for gadgets or we would never know what is happening around us..Just my opinion
all in a state of denial till one hits him in the A S S
There is nothing we can do but watch and enjoy the show to the end
Nothing blew up. Planets and stars form out of accretion that starts with interstellar gas left over from the Big Bang. This forms dust and eventually pebbles and rocks and then planets. Accretion is the process of small or large chunks of matter clumping together. As time goes on, the number of collisions goes down in frequency, but there is not necessarily any time that it stops. So accretion is still going on. Out in the Kuiper belt, planets are still forming and down here, closer to the sun, meteors are still clumping with planets and also with the sun. That's all.
It is a coincidence because we know the trajectories of both bodies and they were not traveling in parallel.
Yes, I am sure it is all some sort of liberal conspiracy to distract you from Obama's Marxism.
You have obviously never read the reams of material already written about terraforming Mars.
Right.
I lived in the mountains of California for decades and meteors like the one in this article are common place. If your in the right place with no city lights ANY night of the week you will see space rocks burning up in the atmosphere...... It's no big deal folks so don't panic, moving to another planet will not be necessary.
@ John re: 1.28
One God? Not according to the bible there isn't.. "Let US create man in OUR image". And that is only within the first few paragraphs!
You christians are amazing in seeing exactly what you want to and ignoring what is really said. Thats the problem when you have priests, ministers and preachers telling you what the bible says instead of reading and understanding it yourselves. I won't even get into the matter of one of God's names (Elohim) being a feminine plural.
"There is only one true God and there is no other."- sounds like a statement made by someone who has been brainwashed or has dedicated themselves to one God to the exclusion of all others. I doubt very much that it was intended as a blanket statement declaring that no other gods exist. You really may want to investigate the ancient Sumerians, Abraham's people. Read the "Enuma Elish". The Hebrews got their greatly compacted stories of creation from it. Every christian should read it and see the original stories from which the Hebrew ones were derived. It will actually answer a lot of questions that leave one puzzled about Genesis. The Enuma Elish is the FULL STORY as compared to Genesis being a condensed version of it. Read and learn instead of spouting dogma..ick!
Chicken little was right, the sky is falling.
I was watching Al Gores Cable Network, you know the one he sold to Big Oil. Anyway they said this ball was a result of oil. So don't drill and allow oil to inflate making billions for rich people.
I was reading on Faux News, the GOP Department of Ministry. It said, this was another reason to raise gas prices and ensure the Dick Cheney and Bush can get more millions off gauging the American Public. The GOP also plans to increase the Big Oil Subsidy from 30 BILLION annually to 50 BILLION.
Side note: The Christian Rights, said this was sent from God to punish America for Gays/Lesbians wanting to marry. There will be a pray the gay away circle tonight
You sir are an idiot.......simple minded liberal that yells "bigot" if christians dont accept your sinful ways; however in doing so you show your true "bigotry".
You sir, are a hypocritical rightwing nut job who thinks they are one of the Puritans/chosen ones. You close your mind to anything new, and sulk all day since you just know the world is falling apart since one of your rich, white, teatards isn't the head of our nation.
both of you are children
Sickofpayingtaxesforillegals
Last time I checked... Neither god nor the bible are mentioned anywhere in the United States Constitution. So by all means, keep believing the pieces of the bible you want (while you ignore others) and think it's a sin, when it's clearly not.
If you prefer to live in a country where religion is the government, please consider Iran, they would love to have you.
It's amazing how something like a meteor can incite such expressions of arrogance and hatred. I think we may be approaching the boiling point. Lighten up, people. It was a rock. "These fireballs are common." Does every news article have to result in accusations, mockery, and hatefulness?
Joe S re: 2.6
Sorry Joe, but thats the way it is now. The republicons made it the standard way of conducting politics and business, which has now spread into everyday nastiness and the politicization of every event no matter how trivial. The only way to fight such a propaganda campaign is to fight back using their own weapons, but not necessarily imitating their use of them. Personally, I think the republicans need a name change, a re-branding of their product. I would suggest "Republican National Socialist Poor and Priviledged Rich People's Party" The RNSP would act as the brownshirts, the muscle, for the PRPP. That way the standard of "poor men fighting the rich men's war" is maintained and none of them need fear the non-existent but loudly touted and dreaded "Death Panels"!
In this nation we have something called "Separation of Church and State." If you wish to live in a theocracy, I hear Saudi Arabia is accepting immigrants, or perhaps Iran. These are examples of nations that have intertwined their religion and politics. Do you really want to be like either of those two? There is not much difference between a "Christian" fundaMENTAList and a Muslim fundaMENTAList.
The sky is falling! The sky is falling!! Nowhere to run. They're in Russia, now the US. It's a sign of the times. Crack open the champagne and toast the zombie apocalypse.
The alien invasion is beginning!
Ala, "invasion LA"?
It started a long time ago.
It is a clear case of Global Warming aggravated by insufficient governmental revenues (Taxes) and the sale of gun clips...pure, simple, and accurate

OH NOOOOoooooo!
These are just a precursor to a much larger event, one that will have dire consequences for the citizens I fear. There is nothing extraterrestrial about these occurrences. It is breeding fear.
There re more reports because more people are looking up in the night sky as a result of the recent event in Russia and the media report of theclose fly-by. Nothing more.
I suspect it's nothing unusual (other than the Russia one), just people looking up more. But "nothing extraterrestrial"? What do you think "extraterrestrial" means? Or do you think these are Earth rocks that are jumping up into space and then coming back down?
I wondered how far that rock would go that I fired into the air with my sling shot.
Actually it's a forerunner for an alien invasion where they blew up a planet to blast incoming meteors at Earth and destroy it completely before then begin colonization.
Daniel, I talked with Big Foot last night and he's coming to get you, riding on a meteor.
Damn, Bogula, that was just way to good for this early in the morning.
Of course there is something extraterrestial about these occurrences, it's break away pieces of rocks orbiting our solar system, and by chance colliding with Earth. We do not just have a certain number of tidy plantets orbiting the Sun. Outer space is messy. Just in the past 40 years the Earth's population has doubled, surveillance technology today is mountainous, and breaking news concerning these events is open in comparison to the Cold War days.
I've always found these scenarios interesting. Without knowing whether you're being sarcastic or not I have to say it's pretty silly. Of course not understanding an alien mentality it's hard to know just how they'd approach this but the all out invasion, ala ID4, etc., seems rather backwards and simplistic. If your goal is to colonize the planet it'd be far more prudent to kill off the local fauna from afar. Introduce a pathogen or something similar that has a 100% mortality rate and wait for the population to die off before risking yourself to possible contamination or heavy resistance. It makes for boring movies though I guess.
It is ironic that nasa would rather send multimillion dollar probes to places far from earth then bother watching the skies of the planet earth for threats. We always put our money in the wrong places, give it away to our enemies or give the money to those who do not need it. HEADS UP
decimus
Would you rather know when one is coming and not be able to do anything about it? Or would you rather be able to some day to pack up and get the hell out of town?
Decimus, keep in mind that space is huge. We could put a hundred satellites in space to monitor for incoming asteroids and still miss many until they are really close. Even a thousand or more would miss many until they were close. Until we have technology that can view the entire solar system, or at leas the area inside the asteroid belt, we are going to miss asteroids. It's like standing in the desert and someone tells you that a fly is coming toward you, but you have no idea where it's coming from. Not only that, but it could be coming from above or below as well as just on the horizontal plane. You may see it when it gets really close, but even with the best binoculars or telescope, you likely won't know about it before then. Space is just far too vast for us to see everything in it... even just looking at our own solar system.
As far as spending money, we really need to work on science and technology that will eventually give us access to space. If we get to the point where we have actual spaceships, then we might have enough presence in space to actually see everything coming toward the planet. We'd also be able to either do something to prevent getting hit by a large asteroid or else be able to evacuate the planet if necessary. At this point, we can't do anything to prevent a large asteroid from hitting us if it's coming toward us. Did you pay attention to the speed of the one that came by the other day? We couldn't come anywhere close to landing something on that to try and push it away from us or destroy it. It's not like the movie Armageddon. And even if we sent all our nukes into space at it, if it's a mile or more wide, we probably are not going to do enough damage to it, or if we do, it will just break up and we'll have thousands of smaller pieces hit the planet. We need to get into space with something better than a shuttle or rocket or even space plane before we'll have any real chance against an asteroid.
Ditto with putting money into Obamanomics. $6 trillion down the drain.....
Is that any different then the 24 trillion down the drain when bushmaster was at the helm? He went from a surplus of 12 trillion to a debt of 12 trillion in 8 years. You do the math and get back to us as to who was the more wasteful of the two.
Penelope2, you seem to be unaware that deflecting the wrongs of one person by recalling the wrongs of another makes one look like a fool. Barry took on the job with full knowledge of what he was getting into. He said his plans would fix it. They haven't. Get back to me on any inaccuracies in my statements above.
Sorry the debt was not at 12 trillion when Bush left office, it was 9. Now it is approaching 17. Wow, Obama has almost doubled it. That is what happens when people do not pay attention in school. Math, important?? Who knew?? Problem with all of this is, we will never know when the one that takes us out is coming until it is too late. I would prefer to be standing under it, if that is the case. It is bad enough living on this planet with the morons who infect it now. After an apocalyspe, there would be unlimited nut jobs if anyone survived. Of course, that would be a short time to deal with it. So for all of you who cannot count and are still living in a fantasy world, keep blaming a President who has been on his ranch for the past 5 years for all of your problems. Someday, you may see the light. Psst! I do not think the President is the problem, it is all of the crooks and thieves around him that you people refuse to boot from office.
Do you guys realize that ANY attempt to turn this into a political rant makes you look ridiculous? EVERY story does not need wacko extremist political comments.
flnobody,
To where? It's impossible to pinpoint where a comet, asteroid, or large meteor will strike.
@gunner, you're forgetting about the off the books Iraq and Afghanistan funding, or are you seriously suggesting that it would be sound policy to either go in default over those debts or yank the troops back without any sort of draw down?
Much of that $8tn was already spent before the President took office between previous commitments and the GOP's unwillingness to cut spending on defense.
Still waiting to hear more about that missing 2-3 trillion $$$ announced on the news Sept 10, 2011. Might help with the budgetary problems now, don't ya think? Just saying.....
AW, its just Rubio venting his fustrations that he crashed and burned so fast after the State of the Union address. Nothing to see, just move along.
And if it is a real space rock that hits in your area, you probably won't realize it, as it will be poof, your toast. Only a couple of things if for sure, death and taxes.
The tax part is certainly true with our President.
@ kpm...
You greedy righties ar alwaya barking at paying your fair share. Just b/c you pay ANY taxes causes you righties to always twist your bloomers too tight!
Taxes under Obama have been very low for years. Quit using your crybaby imagination to make cheap whine and cheese!
Enjoy the meteor show-- coming to a place near you.
Sally Ann, you sure it wasn't a golfball the prez hit while playing with Tiger?
Not to worry folks, if one hits the ground near you, it will quickly be over
Must not have been very big if the Coasties thought it was a flare.
Mens hearts will fail them for fear of whats coming upon this earth.
Wow, another one. Can you religious goofs ever say anything original?
I think the word of God is about as original as one can get.
Superstition ain't the way. Stevie Wonder
to jesusiswatching: amen!!
Planet X or wormwood that kicked out debis from ort cloud that surrounds our solar system. Of course NASA says nothing there and google sky has blocked out area thats it coming from cause there's nothing there to see astronomy wise???
Good meth?
^^ I'd say not.
Nice that you consider several events empirical evidence.
And now you know why many people take the doom and gloom reports about global warming in the media with a large block of rock salt. This story, like so many others in the "news", is nothing but sensationalism and hyperbole. You can go out on any and every night somewhere in the world and see a bolide or two...or three streaking across the sky. This has been going on for billions of years.
The media will take the one example of the meteorite in Russia, and run around with it like chicken little with his head cut off. Creating crisis for ratings is what they do.
It'll be the biggest story you've ever heard for two or three weeks and then it will disappear forever like it never happened. Remember swine flu?
Wow. You must be really edumacated. You use dem big woirds like bolide and hyperbolay.
What are you? 13? That's what I would guess from your world-weary cynicism. As people grow up, they eventually realize that the news media's main purpose isn't just to impress you personally with sensational articles, they are actually reporting news. That is kind of why they are called the "news media" and not the "sensational media."
There are meteor showers every other month that have multiple "fireballs" a night. (I guess that's our new buzz word) They happen all the time and no one cares. However, Russia gets an impact, and suddenly everyone is going "OMG APOCALYPSE!!!"
Funny...once before, everybody had an umbrella but only Noah had a boat...hmmm?!
Don 521,
Funny how God tells Noah but then relies on the rest of the world to believe Noah...hmmmm? Talk about special treatment!
I like post about Rubio, Sall Ann. LMAO. Yours too, Jonathan Reid. And the article also said it was over quickly. Might hae been a Coke or Pot boat the Coasties tied to a drone and sent into the air with its' tail on fire.,
Not surprising. After a highly publicised event like in Russia people are more watchful, hence more sightings.
Climate change. Heard it on CNN! hehehe
Why are people calling the Coast Guard? They'd be the last people I'd consider calling about a flash in the sky. For that matter, I wouldn't call anyone unless it was really interesting to watch and I wanted to let nearby friends know to look at it. I saw a light once that was hovering in the sky and it just sat there for about 5 minutes after I saw it, so I eventually got in my vehicle and drove toward it to see what it was. Shortly after I started driving toward it, it flew off at a speed faster than a helicopter (around the speed of a jet). I had no idea what it was, but I didn't start calling the police or military or anyone else. Why bother calling? Especially when in this case, the chances of it being an asteroid are high thanks to the flyby the other day.
Some of the people said they thought it might have been a flare = boat in trouble..... who else would you call?
Ive seen many of these types in my lifetime. always a treat when It does happen, but right now its getting over hyped.
You are right Nednkat. There are beautiful stuff up in the sky. If only people looked up. I love star gazing and sky watching. I have seen one fireball (large and zooming by fast in Iowa), and many many shooting stars in the Midwest (great place for star gazing in the crisp cold winter sky) and Florida (where lightening itself can provide some fascinating display). I saw green lightening, pink and a reversing U one with a light ball rolling around it. Fascinating! It can look surreal and strange!
Morons don't. They show up on TV to advertise or sell stuff or give their two bit opinions - poor in science and poor in politics.
Happens "all the time"? Perhaps, but with 7 billion pairs of eyes in the world we sure seem to be in all the places meteors dare not travel. "To calm the masses you must lie to the masses, repeat, rinse, until lie becomes fact in their minds". Fixes everything!
nednkat, just curious, what part of the world do you two live?
"To calm the masses you must lie to the masses, repeat, rinse, until lie becomes fact in their minds".
@ Paul...
Sounds like a common formula for looney conservatism!
When I was a child, I lived in a rural area. It was fun to lay on the hood of a car and count the 'shooting starts' as we called them. They were not unusual and they were pretty. No doom and fear needed. They sky has been falling since the beginning.
There is no protection from them and never has been. People calling for protection from the universe need help.
@ Paul...
'Sounds like a common formula for looney conservatism!"
C_D_J55.
I think your exactly
right(I mean correct)! I'm as far from being a conservative as I can possible imagine. Those Metors and Comets are not just a common everyday occurance, they are signs for things to come and very soon. There is a big one coming in november, check it out. Named Ison. but untilthen just watch the skies.
Thousands of small meteors hit the atmosphere every day, 24 hours a day. Larger ones are less common. Take your meds.
Like bugs on the windshield of your car - no biggie. I'm sure a few times you've had a near-miss with a bird that was alarming, but how many times has a bird actually splattered itself on your car?
I did drive through a hoard of bees once. It sounded like a heavy rainstorm for about a second or two. There was so much bug goo on the windshield I could barely see daylight. The whole front end of the car was plastered with hundreds of hits and had a faint yellow tint. Yeah, I had to use a scrub brush to clean the car that day.
If we got pelted with meteors like that, it could be an extinction event for certain species.
My grandma hit a flying turkey which exploded through her windshield and covered the interior of her car with feathers and guts... It was horrible actually.
"God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly!"
- Mr. Carlson (WKRP)
@ Desertbro
I drove through a huge swarm of mosquitoes that had been feeding on cattle in Idaho. The windshield and the front of my white car was covered in blood. I pulled over at the next gas station to clean the windshield, the blood was dripping onto the ground.
The people at the gas station didn't seem surprised...
Meteor showers occur all the time.... what's knew????
Just don't get wet by the meteor showers!
"what's new"
"who knew"
You might consider the importance of literacy.
You're welcome.
Meteor showers occur when the earth passes through the debris streams of old comets. They're mostly sand to pea sized objects that you see. But on any given night, you can go out and see many meteors. It's just that most people live under light polluted skies and can't see a lot of them and they're just not looking up. For several years I spent a few nights a week star gazing for a couple of hours from around 10-12. Every night I'd see at least a few....every night. I've ever seen a couple that look like this Florida one too. They really aren't that uncommon...as long as your looking for them. Hell, about 15 years, there was one that produced a sonic boom over Denver in the middle of the night...it woke me up. No windows were broken, but it did sound like a very close lightning strike.
The sky is not falling. But wear your hard hat anyway, just in case.
In the event of one hitting your head, that would certainly help your odds...My vehicle was hit by something the size of a pebble and it sounded like a bomb went off( damaged metal and broken glass...I figured it was a nut that fell off an airplane or space program debris...Was scary for a minute...
"People should not be scared of the sky falling or anything at all." Usually, people who are that condescending aren't quite that stupid (and vice-versa).
Just B.O.'s ego exploding.
What a filthy comment to make about the President of the United States. Go. Just leave if you can't stand the President that was voted in by the majority. I'm sure some of us will volunteer to help you find the border.
Giving yourself a point doesn't make you cool either.
Penelope2 the national debt in 2000 was almost 6 trillion dollars. That's not a surplus genius.
Like most lefties, facts are an inconvenient truth to Penelope
George Bush was president in 2000. He inherited a surplus budget from Bill Clinton. Fact. We went to a budget deficit during his term. Fact. In 2008 after two terms, George Bush's management of the government put us in the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression of the 1920's. Fact.
These are the facts. They are inconvenient truths for right wing-nuts with short term memory who are either wealthy corporatists or poor, uneducated citizens who are easily swayed by a very slick propaganda team of the tea party movement. President Obama is not responsible for the huge crater left by the Bush Meteorite that devastated our economy. Like a natural disaster in the magnatude of Hurricane Katrina or sandy, the economic disaster created during the Bush Administration would take years to recover. All the Republican Party had to hold up in the past two elections was an old senator and a beauty queen and later a wealthy Morman Corporate Snob who was out of touch with middleclass lifestyles. Had either of these guys been elected, our country would be worse off as they continued to seek record breaking profits for the rich while the middleclass continued to shrink to poverty levels.
We are still in a recovery period. The economy is showing steady improvement thanks in part to the unpopular steps President Obama took to save the automotive industry and other factors. You cannot convince me that without PBO's leadership things would have improved. I am so glad I was able to be part of the majority to re-elect Obama for a second term.
Lack of respect for our President shows disregard for the office of The President of the United States. Stupid words and comments that are derrrogatory to the office hurt all of us. If you can't show some respect for the black man in office, then show some respect for the title he holds as Commander in Chief.
Boooooooooo!
why does it have to be the black man in office?
I am absolutely sure, beyond a shadow of a doubt, it was Elvis landing in the Bermuda Triangle! He's back to reinvent the music industry!! :)
Michaeltiegen, haha! Last week I commented that the one in Russia was Pope John Paul making a re-entry into the earth's atmosphere! The Catholic Church needs another dynamo like PJP.
It sure needs it.
It would have been bigger and more sparkly if it had been Elvis. :)
Here is some facts you might find interesting. Several years ago there was an article about the doom sayers and Myan calender and how the arm of the our galaxy that contains our solar system would be passing through an area of space called the shooting gallery. This was because it was thought to be an area of high meteor activity and would pose a greater threat to the planets in our system. From all of the recent activity I am beginning to wonder if this hypothesis is correct. The problem is if the article was right it won't matter how deep a hole you dig if anything of a large size and mass hits us.
One rotation of the galaxy equals 1 galactic year which is approximately 225 million years.
1 galactic year ago
Permian–Triassic extinction event
0.26 galactic year ago
Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event
That is two extinction level events in a 65,000,000 year period so that would be two areas of of high meteor activity we pass through in the beginning and end of that period of time.
Clarification-
From the data I looked at it appears that extinction level events coincide with regions of space that we pass through and are associated with where our arm of the galaxy is at a specific times in the galactic year. We are currently passing through the area of space that the Permian–Triassic extinction event that happened 1 galactic year ago (225,000,000 years). The Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event happened 65,000,000 years ago and we will not pass through that area of space again for another 166,500,000 years. A strike from a big asteroid more than 300 million years ago left a huge impact zone buried in Australia and changed the face of the Earth, researchers said on Friday. This asteroid hit would have occurred in the same area of space that the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event occurred.
Just as our own solar system has a static asteroid belt between mars and Jupiter and other belts have been seen by telescopes around near stars our solar system may well have belts associated with particular regions of space in our system. They may be associated with the gravitational pull between our galaxy and the Andromeda galaxy and these areas of space also coincide with where a debris field would be between our galaxy and the Andromeda galaxy. As our galaxies near one another this debris field would probably grow thicker. Our galaxies are projected to collide in 3.75 billion years.
Order of events would be Australian asteroid (300 million years ago.)
Permian–Triassic extinction event (1 galactic year which is approximately 225 million years.)
Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event (65,000,000 years ago) approximately 1 galactic year from Austrailian asteroid event.
Current events - 1 galactic year from Permian–Triassic extinction event
