F-16s intercept two planes near Obama's holiday weekend retreat

F-16 fighter jets intercepted two aircraft after they entered temporarily restricted airspace near the Florida club where President Barack Obama was spending the long President’s Day weekend.

In a statement on its Facebook page, NORAD said two F-16s were sent to deal with a Lancair 320 aircraft “that was not in communications with air controllers … near Port St. Lucie,” Fla., at 5:10 p.m. Sunday.

“Following the intercept, the … aircraft was escorted out of the [area] and allowed to continue on," it added.

NORAD also said in another Facebook posting that a Cessna was caught inside the off-limits zone at about 9:30 a.m. ET Saturday.

“Following the intercept, the aircraft departed the [restricted area] and landed at Okeechobee Airport where it was met by local authorities,” the statement said.

Obama is taking three days off in Florida while Michelle Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia are in Colorado on a skiing trip.

He is staying at the Floridian, described by The Associated Press as “an exclusive and secluded yacht and golf club on the state's Treasure Coast.”

On Sunday, the president played a round of golf with Tiger Woods at the club.

In all fairness to the civilian pilots... His Highness has so many outings it would be hard to keep track of all of the no-fly zones. Partying with Tiger Woods while the wife is away??????? Sounds like obama wants to emulate the fun times of JFK.

When the economy is in the toilet, Barry ought naught to be pissing OUR money away on vacations.

He is a public servant, nothing more and nothing less.

He needs to get his ass back to the white house and play basketball in the basement.

When the economy is "in the toilet" (which of course means "someone I don't like is president"), whether he vacations or not won't affect it one bit in terms of the spending.

He is a public servant...just like other public servants..who take vacations. Your point? oh, that's right, you don't have one. lol.

He needs to get back to the white house and vacation there? lol, that would solve..what? oh, that's right, you don't have a point again.

your whole post was just a whine. and you avoided my question to dazzle us with your brilliance at what point the economy is good enough that you approve of a vacation? It appears you are able to whine, but not contribute anything. :)

Cockroach. Tell that to Congress, who barely made it back to vote on the tax issues at the end of December. Tell that to Congress, who still manage only to work a portion of the year. They are the ones who need to pass a budget, not the president of the USA.

    #29.4 - Mon Feb 18, 2013 9:07 AM EST

that's the thing...presidents (unfairly) get credit for a good economy, and (unfairly) get blame for a bad one.

    "

Dubner and his Freakomonics partner Steve Levitt posed the question about the president's influence after the May 2010 midterm elections. The two interviewed economists, Constitutional scholars, business school professors and others. Even those who were actively advising the president on economic and international affairs were in agreement.

"We talked with Austan Goolsbee and Donald Rumsfeld…they will admit with no reservations the president's influence on the economy is almost vanishingly small," Dubner says."

the president has the greatest influence on use (or not) of the military, and foreign policy (although our influence in the world, outside of military use, is less than it used to be as well).

The President of this country has no say in the price of OIL and GASOLINE. Opec has their prices at the lowest they have in YEARS. Hedgefund people(ya know, the rich ones who are laughing all the way to the bank) are driving up the prices unnaturally. Add in the likes of Exxon, BP,Shell, etc., if they aren't busy paying fines for oil leaks, they too are laughing all the way to the bank counting their $Billion profits.

Contact your congressmen and women. Tell them that you want them to enact a law regarding the price of gasoline. That's the only way anything is going to happen. But remember...they did manage to keep the tax breaks for Big Oil in the tax law inacted at the end of 2012. So, good luck with that.

Not sure that holds water, Vermontguy. No one feels a President shouldn't take vacations, but it is a matter of timing and optics at the time. If it were Camp David where all of his resources are readily available, that isn't a problem. Not a golf cart in Florida.

Imagine, Eisenhower going on vacation June 5, 1944..to play golf....Rommel did.. see how that worked out for him?

what's wrong with the timing now? when is a "good" time for the president to take a vacation? Of course, the russians "could" launch a nuclear strike at literally any minute...no matter how absurd that probability is...so does that mean we need to lock the president in the war room 24X7 "just in case"? well, since its absurd to have the president literally in the war room 24x7 (that's what we have the military and such for), I don't really think its "something to think about".

There were a number of things we could have done better vis-a-vis 9/11,. but locking the president in a room for 4 years isn't one of them.

no, YOU were whining that he was taking a vacation when the economy was "in the toilet" (here is YOUR exact quote: "When the economy is in the toilet, Barry ought naught to be pissing OUR money away on vacations."), saying that he shouldn't take a vacation in bad economic times.

So, I asked the obvious question - when would the times get better so that you would approve of a vacation? and you avoided the answer. lol. Your answer of "two weeks' was stupid, given your whining about the economy. If you were intelligent, a useful response would have been something like "he can take a vacation when the unemployment rates drops below 7%" or something that references the economy. duh.

oh my, how stupid you are. :)

                Vermongay,

If I was the president, I wouldn't take a vacation while the economy was in the toilet.

But, I'm not the president, so you're stuck with Barry. He will continue to vacation and suck every dime out of this country, that he can.

He really believes that he is a rock star. That's partly to blame on the media, that treats him as such.

Again, YOU whined about him taking vacations during bad economic times, so I asked the OBVIOUS question of when would the economy be good enough for you to approve his vacation, and you keep avoiding the the question. Your response ("two weeks") was stupid, since that contridicts YOUR claim that vacation could only come during good economic times. The response above is meaningless, all you keep saying is "in the toilet" which is vague to the point of worthlessness.

so, again, when do we know it is acceptable to take vacation in terms of the economy? why are you too stupid to answer your own "point"? :)

                  "

                  2. Obama has taken more vacation time than any president in history
This isn't even remotely accurate either, but first, some context from Nancy Reagan: "Presidents don't get vacations — they just get a change of scenery. The job goes with you." The responsibilities, the pressure, the officer with the "nuclear football" — it's all with a commander-in-chief at all times. No exceptions.

But how much time away from the White House has President Obama spent, and how does this compare with predecessors?

POTUS Tracker, compiled by The Washington Post, shows that from January 2009 to October 31, 2012, Obama spent all or part of 72 vacation days in a variety of places, mostly Hawaii in the winter and Martha's Vineyard in the summer. That's about 10 weeks away in three-and-a-half years, hardly extravagant. Through May 18, according to data from CBS's Knoller, he also visited Camp David 22 times, spending all of part of 54 days there.

                  What about his predecessors?

                  · Ronald Reagan was away for 436 days, usually at Rancho del Cielo (his mountaintop retreat in California) or Camp David.

                  · George W. Bush spent 32 months at his ranch (490 days) or Camp David (487 days) — an average of four months away every year.

The President is indeed "special". He's our fairly elected leader who represents our nation. Those unpatriotic and disrespectful types would be arrested for their un-American comments if they lived in other countries. They should kiss the ground and remember that we've got more freedom than many countries. Running the President down doesn't make you sound intelligent or funny. It's classless, unpatriotic, rude, juvenile and dangerous. Even when we had bad Presidents such as the predecessor, bashing him wasn't an educated person's style. The trailer parks and ghettos who take part in this type of behavior should direct their energies toward getting an education. Most posts are littered with spelling and grammatical errors. After 9/11, we should all do our part to keep our nation safe and this includes our President regardless of whether you like him or not. I'm happy to see that others here do defend our President and our nation. The glass is 1/2 full and not 1/2 empty. Take your negative and cynical views elsewhere.

Think Wise.. excellent points..some do actually have serious issues with policies and actions of govt. This is a means of public sentiment being vetted. This is not unpatriotic, rather it is unpatriotic to silence voices.

Forums allowing lampooning and stating concerns have been a political practice going back to when we were colonies. We all respect the Office and the responsibilities therein and many have died supporting it while not agreeing with the chair warmer policies.

We still have freedom of speech and press unless and EO just came out that I did not hear.

No problem with people bringing up points, concerns or disagreeing. It's the style in which it's done. Freedom of speech is a great thing but when it borders being disrespectful, rude and unprofessional, it becomes tasteless. People can agree to disagree but being blatantly being rude towards our President shows something abut the writer. I agree that having serious issues with with actions of government have been around since the beginning of our nation. The delivery of how to complain or bring something to the table of substance to help correct the problems or wrongdoings is my point. When you tear down your own family, it's a reflection of who you are. The rest of the world laughs as we rip each other apart. It's o.k. to come here to vent but offering a solution rather than just whining is a lot more productive.

Barry needs to get out of the golf cart, put his crack pipe down, and figure out what to do with those 11 million undocumented Democrats.

when in doubt, post stupid allegations against obama ("crack pipe").

If anyone is on drugs here in terms of stupid posts, it would be you. :)

                      Vermongay,

Since all of our paper currency and coins already have presidents on them, would you be OK with Barry's face being on the Food Stamp card?

                        Vermon,

You've admitted numerous times on this site, that you're gay.

As for "Vermon," it's kind of like how you call me, "Roach."

                        It's just shorthand. :)

Air space accidental violations has happened with several Presidents. Glad it turned out to be a non event.

NBC, Is today Presidents Day? It would be nice to see a article to honor this USA Holiday.

WHat a waste of our national resources. Just because the fool didn't have long enough on vacation in Hawaii over Christmas and needs to goof off some more.

                          Vermon,

You really are extra dim this morning.

I told you that I wouldn't vacation during hard economic times, if I was president, and I don't think Barry should either.

But, it's up to him, and apparently, he sees it differently.

Fire up the jets and stock up the fridge with 40's.
