Subscribe to RSSThe sister of one of the students who attended President Obama's speech on gun violence Friday was shot and killed while walking with a group of friends. Police say the gunfire was meant for someone else in the group. NBC's Brian Williams reports.
Police are questioning two men in the murder of an 18-year-old Chicago woman who was killed Friday in a north suburb, officials said Sunday.
Janay McFarlane was shot and killed while leaving a store in North Chicago, hours after her younger sister attended President Barack Obama’s speech on Friday addressing gun violence in Chicago.
McFarlane's mother, Angela Blakely, said McFarlane was not the intended target and that the bullet was intended for a friend she was with. Blakely said McFarlane had asked two male friends to go with her to the store because she didn't feel safe walking alone.
Two men followed McFarlane and her friends out of the store, police said, and one of them fired nine rounds, missing his target and hitting McFarlane in the head.
McFarlane's family said she talked a lot about the death of another slain teen, Hadiya Pendleton, in the days before her sister attended Obama’s Chicago speech at Hyde Park Academy High School.
McFarlane’s younger sister, 14-year-old Destini Warren, who attended the speech, recalled McFarlane saying she was, “excited for [Destini]” to see the president.
Warren said the president’s speech “really connected to what was going on” and she “didn’t expect that to happen.”
Warren also did not expect the speech to relate to her so personally.
"We could go to each other for everything," she said. "We were more of best friends than we were sisters."
Blakely said McFarlane was "her little buddy."

McFarlane was a senior at the World Changers Leadership Academy and was scheduled to graduate in June. She had plans to go to culinary school.
Blakely said she and McFarlane were supposed to go prom dress shopping later this week.
McFarlane is survived by her sister, mother and 3-month-old son, Jayden.

zapain- Actually, I'd say doctors and hospitals need disease, or at least the fear of it. After all, "we're pretty sure it's this, but let's run a few more tests just to be certain." How many people would you think go thru unnecessary tests? American's have become obsessed with our health, and medical expenses have skyrocketed due to increased demand.

Yes, zapain, they are correct, and so are you regarding the healthcare industry. The controls, such as UR departments that we have in the process now have screwed things up and allow doctors to over test....and the doctors take full advantage of these flaws. Also, just to add to the list, mechanics need cars to break down and plummers need sinks to get clogged. These are other negative things that people live off of correcting.
Back to the point that was made, politicians need these things, and they like to have them. Remember Rahm's comments about never wasting a good crisis....or whatever the exact words were? They all think this way. They love a good crisis, as it gives them something to feel superior about, and gives them an opportunity to grab more control.

My condolences to her family. I hope that they will have the support of friends and family that they need at this time. I hope the survivors of this tragedy will live their lives in a manner worthy of her memory.

That is why health care costs are so high......they must cover their back's instead of just being able to provide care on signs and symptoms provided by the patient. Yes, I read about that.
I am not trivializing Hadiya's death. But in their rush to make a poster child of her for the gun debate they created a monster and I feel they demeaned the death of the two small children who died just a couple of weeks prior to Hadiya's.
Now, what is Michelle going to do when the parents of other murdered children ask for her to attend the funerals of their precious loved ones? Most of us know it isn't practical... but in the midst of grief and in the light of her extravagant gestures to Hadiya's family and the media's red carpet overtures, it's going to be hard for those parents to balance "practical" with "why not me?"

This proves that guns restrictions do not stop the violence that's being over reported by the press. Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. The problem is not with law abiding citizens, but with those that are hell bent of committing crimes. It’s the illegal use of guns and the crazy’s that are behind them. It's such a shame that these kids are being killed by Criminals. Mr. President banning my assault rifle only leaves me unable to defend my kid’s from the illegally armed criminals.

I have said it before and I will say it again. Why are Chiefs of Police, and their organizations are for Gun Control, while the rank file cops, the elected Sheriffs and their organizations are typically against it? Gun control means more crime. More crime means more cops, more cops mean a bigger budget, bigger budget means bigger salaries. Doesn't take a genius to figure this one out. How much does NYC, Chicago, etc pay a Police Chief? And if a Sheriff wants to get re-elected, he has to cut crime, and his budget. But a Police chief is hired, or appointed, and once in, damn near impossible to get rid of.

Why do you think defense lawyers fight so hard to keep a client on death row for decades?... Billable hours. Now if we stopped paying for a Public Defender upon conviction and after the first appeal. How many lawyers would belly up to then bench to keep fighting for that client? Right, and sentences would be carried out in a couple years, not decades.

I have a friend of a friends' mom, who has this cousin, who's sister saw Obama on TV giving a speach... does this mean her older sister's boyfriends' mom's second cousin will die from a gunshot?

I'm guessing there is a lot of gang activity in that area...yet, no mention of this by MSNBC. Why no call for a nationwide crackdown on gang activity? I suspect this is an offshoot of the "Gunwalker" operation, where gangs (this, time...domestic gangs), are encouraged to run amok and spread fear amongst the uninformed.
But how can this be possible? Chicago has banned guns!
The no-probable-cause pat downs in NY are blatantly unconstitutional. Do they appear to reduce gun crime? Yes, they do, but at the expense of the surrender of the right to go in public unmolested by government agents. That is not a solution, it's the creation of a new problem - government unrestrained by constitutional prohibitions.
Also, consider the root of the problem. This shooting in Chicago is gang-related. Why do we have a gang problem? We have a gang problem courtesy of the "war on drugs." Thank you, Congress.
Government manufactured the drug/crime/gun problem, and is now promoting a solution - more legislation to controls, or ban, another commodity, guns - and the legislation is aimed at the wrong target, the 100 million gun owners who present zero threat to the community (and this is a key). Hand-in-hand with this is a continued expansion of the "police power" and a concomitant reduction in rights. Arguably, this tail wagging the dog approach to law enforcement already has the upper hand, and we are well on our way to having a police state here in America. It's no wonder they're desperate to get guns out of the hands of the law-abiding. They "key" I mentioned earlier is here - those are the folks who will actually fight them over this - real criminals couldn't care less. You're wasting your breath telling our elected officials that their legislation is aimed at the wrong target (law-abiding gun owners) because that's exactly who they intend to target - their legislation is not misguided, it's pointed squarely at the people who pose a threat to them and is not intended to reduce "gun violence." It's intended to reduce our ability to resist their assumed and unlawful authority.
I think it's about time we go back to public executions. Bring it home to your television in living color. Walk the murder up the steps of the scaffold, put the rope around his/her neck; tell him/her that he/she will @!$%# their pants as a result for further humiliation; give him/her their last say, and pull the freaking lever. I'll guarantee you one thing, it will make the most harden criminal on the street piss their pants. If you murder someone, you get publicly executed by rope. No more of this pu$$y lethal injections crap. It needs to be brought home for some good old fashion shock value to the rest of the dirt-bags out there. I think the lowest age you should start would be seven years old! At that age, you spend eleven years in prison and hung on you 18th birthday, kind of like a going away present. Now, if you're a gang member, you get more progressive style of death penalty. The Coast Guard takes you out about three miles and tosses you overboard. If you make it back you're pardon. And I am not kidding either. This country has gotten to wussified over the death penalty. If the Director of the ACLU has a problem with it, let the Coast Guard take him out three miles. It should be apparent from the article. Nine shots fired ..... none hit the intended target. They might as well file off those pesky sights. They get in the way when you try to pull your gun out of your sweatshirt pocket. And once the gun is drawn, they aren't used anyway. Something similar happened a few blocks from my house. One boy was walking to submit his application for a job at a nearby restaurant, a couple other boys engaged him and you can only guess what words were exchanged. The other boys waited until he passed and then shot him in the head. These are not gang bangers they are kids who are unable to resolve any conflicts or altercation without guns. Guns are easy to obtain and absolute in their resolution. There is something seriously wrong with a 2nd amendment that allows children to obtain guns and it's long past time to do something about it.

You claim those you speak of are in no way connected to gangs. Unless you know of those people personally, you don't know what they do, and even if you know someone personally, you still don't know everything they do.
What about the 2nd amendment allows children to obtain guns? NOTHING. Criminals allow "children" to obtain these weapons, particularly in areas like Chicago that has a do-nothing police department. This has nothing to do with the 2nd amendment, and to even try to make that argument shows your bias and your utter ignorance.
...and the horse you rode in on - Ever hear of zip guns? They were a weapon that didn't need to be bought. They could be made and they were untracable. Single shot but still deadly. BTW - hammers, pick axes, knives, hands, feet, baseball bats, and other everyday items become weapons when used to commit crimes. How do you prevent "children" from gaining access to those?

No politician wants to point fingers at a segment of society that isolates a specific minority and bring the hammer down not only on the minority's failure to live any other way than by violence, murder, drugs, and the complicity of the community by their silence in hiding and protecting the criminals...
but at the failure of the elected representatives of the communities that house these gangs of criminals to make tough decisions to help their constituents clean them out.
It could be argued that guns are the more humane method for gang bangers to kill. Afterall, an improperly used pick axe would take much longer, and be much more bloody and painfull. If we aren't going to address the real problem, that being that these idiots are willing to kill to resolve their differences, then we should atleast allow them a humane way to do it. Hell, give them a bazooka if we won't face the fact that their communities continue to breed this scum.

well... at the time the Constitution was written, out on the FRONTIER, it was common to teach a 9 or 10 year old (boy - girls were not taught how to handle guns generally) how to load and fire a weapon. THAT was a matter of "necessity". TODAY, we have easy access to weapons - legally, unlawfully... you get what you can afford. of course, the EASY way to control the gun violence is NOT to control the GUNS, instead control ACCESS TO AMMUNITION. Without ammunition, a "gun" is little more than a semi-useless "club" in the same category as a BAT or a ROCK. THINK ABOUT IT...
Using a intimate weapon would deter murder. You need to be close and "get your hands dirty". Migh need a couple blows or hacks to bring down your target. A gun? point, shoot, run. Almost any horror of killing is taken away. I see no similarities.

Thank you Patrick - you are correct. Better parenting is what is needed. Baby daddy got pissed because it was his and did not accept as his and someone else did. Someone else took responsibility for a THREE MONTH child from this 19 year old MOTHER. Therein lies the problem. 19 year olds having babies, or even younger for that matter. Be a man and own up to your responsibilities.
Oh - and it will be the three cousin twice removed of someone shot next time we hear of Chicago crime. Chicago has a real gang problem that needs to be addressed. North Chicago is 40 miles north of Chicago no where near the city limits. It sits south of Waukegan, which is not the safest city in IL. Most parents in Waukegan don't let their children go to North Chicago.

There is a show called "Gangland", it is a series of documentaries about different gangs and how they form. The "Hells Angels" were formed by returning veterans but eventually accepted non-veterans and branched into criminal activities. Many black gangs started out as community organizations in Chicago that were formed by community orgsanizers to better their community, but then eventually became violent drug dealing gangs.

One neighborhood had a crack house move into a local rent area. Cops couldnt do anything cause they didnt have any evidence for an arrest.
Well 4 of the neighbors ( who happen to be gun collectors ) started cleaning their LARGE number of guns in the front yard, and let it be known that the house wasn't welcome there. Seeing all these older guys with their guns scared away all the clients. ( well that and them yelling at them to leave or things will happen to them )

If this doesn't clearly indicate the problem with violence in America is NOT due to firearms, but one of social inequity, education and (in this case, almost 100% certainly, the DEA), then it's time to wake up and take off the blinders.
No! The issue is a lack of respect for others as a whole. This as been wrought by and education system that bases it's ideolgy on "fairness" and "equality". These gangbangers have been taught that life is unfair and if you don't take what you will not obtain and it is justifiable to take regardless of the means.
Who's brilliant idea was it to teach this way? Karl Marx. For society to change to his "superior system", since people weren't switching voluntarily, he came up with the concept of teaching "fairness" and "equality".

Give them 24 hours to turn themselves in to local police.
Deploy the full force of the United States Armed Forces to hunt them down without exception under "Take no prisoners" orders.
After 80 hours, if there are any left alive, allow another 24 hour window for any survivors to turn themselves in to local law enforcement, with the full understanding that the operation will resume and use of NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) Weapons has now been authorized.

Banning any or all of the weapons on Feinstein's "wish list" will not stop mass killings. I live in rural area and often have to protect my livestock from predators. A handgun is pretty much useless for that task. Most criminals are on a revolving door through the justice system. You want to slow down violence? The NAACP didn't go around bombing Christian churches, hanging "uppity" people from trees and setting fire to them, or killing people for trying to vote, or vandalizing and terrorizing neighborhoods by burning crosses on people's lawns, or keeping people from getting proper treatment at local hospitals. KKK was behind a lot of hurt and death in a lot of states, openly and secretly.

I was for the gun bans but it appears that every adult should carry in Chicago to protect themselves. It's back to the wild West! Chicago needs to bring out the National guard. Frisk the kids waling around would need a law to do so. Looks as though all the black kids carry for their own gangs. No Fathers there as they are scared to stay! Bad place to live! The Latinos don't have as many problems!

Honest folks living in Chicago could be inducted into a voluntary reserve police force. Other cities have them.
It would require some training, but would arm the RIGHT people.
