Woman allegedly bites off piece of boyfriend's tongue after Valentine's dispute

Cook County Sheriff's Department

Elaine Cook, 51, was charged with aggravated domestic battery for allegedly biting off part of her boyfriend's tongue during an argument on Valentine's Day.

An Illinois woman was arrested after allegedly biting off a large piece of her boyfriend's tongue following a domestic dispute on Valentine's Day.

Police say Elaine Cook of Skokie, Ill., and her boyfriend of 10 months went out last week for Valentine's Day, returned to her apartment and got into a fight.

Cook reportedly asked him to leave her apartment, but he wanted to end the argument.

"He told her they should stop fighting and went to kiss her," Assistant State's Attorney Eve Reilly told the Chicago Sun-Times, "and she bit off a large portion of his tongue."

Reilly said Cook's boyfriend ran to the sink bleeding. Cook followed him and threw the tongue on the counter. He put the piece into a bag of ice, and then he and Cook's roommate called 911.

The boyfriend was rushed to Evanston Hospital, Reilly said, but doctors could not reattach the tongue because of inadequate blood supply, the Sun-Times reported.

In the days following the maiming, the 47-year-old boyfriend, who asked not to be identified, said he was in a lot of pain.

“Obviously, talking is not the best thing to do right now,” the man told the Sun-Times. “[But] at least I can talk. It’s just sad. The whole thing."

Court records show Cook was arrested Friday, and Cook County Judge Israel Desierto ordered her to be held Sunday in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Her boyfriend, who said he has "a lot of mixed feelings," said he didn't want to see Cook's life ruined by going to jail.

"It makes me sick to my stomach that she's sitting in jail right now, but it's just out of my hands," said the man. "I have to focus on getting better now."

Cook is due back in court on Wednesday.

Seems he got what he deserved treating a woman he pissed off like a dumb kid he could just tell to stop and then make out with as if that would sooth her pain. men are stupid and I hope to see more women showing them just how stupid they are.

Hey libsarecommies, your ignorance must make you believe you are the happiest arse alive. I hope your woman gives you the same discount on your flapping tongue that this woman gave her stupid boyfriend.

Amazing. If this had been a man biting a woman's tongue off, I'm sure many of the sarcastic responses on this thread wouldn't be making fun; there would be outrage, and justifiably so. Do some of you not understand that assault/abuse occurs on both sides? News flash: Women are every bit as capable of domestic abuse/assault/battery as men are. The throwback attitude that a man is somehow "weak" for allowing it to happen contributes to it being an under-reported issue.

No one "deserves" something like that, unless someone has you cornered and is trying to do you bodily harm and you are defending yourself in the only manner available to you. The injured man's feelings of remorse about the woman he's probably convinced himself that he cares about sitting in jail isn't at all uncommon among abuse victims, unfortunately. He needs therapy, and she needs as much jail time as any man would get under the identical circumstances.

Boreal Belle, thank you. I too cannot get over the double standard there is between men and women in cases likes these.

"Seems he got what he deserved...". Really Lore&Wisdom? I don't know how anyone can make a comment like that. As Boreal Belle said, no one deservse ANY part of domestic violence.

She was mad at him and he tried to kiss her? Bad move!

Hollywood wants you to believe that a kiss at these moments will make her melt into your arms.

    Wow. Just, wow.

      #1.18 - Tue Feb 19, 2013 6:48 AM EST

Ryan-V, it is a shame, isn't it? I'm an advocate for victims/survivors of domestic violence; I have seen things on both sides of that coin that still surprise me after years of observation. It's very frustrating that the public portrayal of DV is often as lopsided as it is, but I won't get into that further here. Violent behavior should never be tolerated.

Brokencitizen, trying to "kiss and make up" wasn't a good move on the part of the man, true. But think about it for just a moment; he "tried to kiss her", which would indicate that she went along with it just so she could do what she did. That is vicious, hateful, and dangerous behavior. There are any number of ways she could have handled that situation, yet she chose to violently maim this man. That's classic abusive behavior... she wanted control.

ROLMAO - That was pretty damn funny Hot-in-Miami!

On a more serious note, most people do not know how important a tongue really is. The tongue controls the flow of food and water that enters the throat. Without it, you either choked to death eating food or you drown drinking water. It's that important to survival. I would give her ten years for that alone.

Where I come from, when you loose a greater portion of your tongue, your love life will suffer greatly. His chances for doing "so much better" are now severely restricted. Women are demanding creatures.

          Lore,

You're generalized male bashing is unimpressive. Clearly he should have left, and given that he has mixed feelings after a chunk of his toung just got removed suggests he isn't exaclty the brightest bulb. If you can't see the dark irony in your statements that she was justified in biting said toung because "men are stupid" you might want to take a few steps back and get your sexist man-hating attitude in check. While our society currently tolerates male-bashing to an excessive degree, gender doesn't determine crown holder of stupidity.

Neither of us know all the details of this situation, nor the couple's history. But there's no report of violent past or that he was being agressive (stupid, yes). I would be embarrassed if my son or daughter violently dealt with someone who was simply being an idiot and not realizing how pissed off their boyfriend/girlfriend was. Given that her room-mate was nearby, it's hard to imagine she was in serious jepordy that wouldn't be solved my simply asker her room mate to call the cops etc. if he didn't leave immediately.

Then chuckles would have been the one escorted out if he didn't get his act together.

If my daughter was mistreated by someone I would expect her to be assertive and ditch his sorry butt, not take him into her appartment and then flip out and bite his toung. If he didn't get the picture after saying goodbye and not returning phone calls, get a restraining order and carry mace. I would expect similar of my son. Instead she lost it and went off and permanently maimed him, is that an example of being "smart" to you lore? Or is it a bit more safe to say they were both pretty dumb?

          I agree with Solymnar.

No adult has any right to handle a situation this way. If the man is being a dolt and refusing to leave, she should call the police. If he forces his tongue down her throat, she should slap him hard and shove him away. These are actions I can agree with, if he really is being a total clod.

But biting his tongue off, no. That's the stuff of horror movies. It is a sick and twisted way to respond and it shows that she is violently unpredictable, so she needs to be locked up because a woman who would chomp out a man's tongue after a simple argument would do all sorts of damage to many people if she is left to run free.

He was not restraining her hands nor using his strength against her, nor doing anything that would justify her biting him AT ALL. This was NOT an act of self defense, it WAS an act of evil.

Usually speaking its the man who assaults the woman (statistically speaking) but this woman has some huge mental issues as what she did was maim this poor guy for life. Why in the world did she do this? To be honest I don't even want to know because there is no good reason next to a defensive action which this doesn't sound like from what we have been told so far.

Maybe this woman had been abused in her past as many woman have but it still doesn't make what she did right in any way. If people cannot communicate with each other they need to separate and cool off and if the relationship is worth it maybe even seek professional help if they really think there relationship is worthy.

This woman needs professional help big time and I hope she gets it and I also hope she does some jail time for what she did to this guy as this is not acceptable behavior from anyone. She should also have to tell any future mate of her past before she dates them.

I swear there is something in the air or water that seems to be affecting a certain type of people these days as stories like this one are becoming to common. The man should be thankful they were not in the act of lovemaking as this could have went a different way and we all know what I am thinking. Thankfully the man can still talk!

Actually statistics show that more often than not its the woman who strikes the man, it's just that when a man strikes a woman it does more damage so you hear about it more. Men are also less likely to report being hit by a woman due to societal considerations.

He'd rot in jail if he chomped off her tongue.

Maybe some of the male posters who condemn her will think twice about putting their tongues someplace they're not wanted. They've been fighting, and she's furious...and typical male, he thinks that sticking his tongue halfway down her throat is going to make things all right. The testosterone-fueled arrogance of it...!

Personally I think this woman in the story is a whack job . Many like to blame it on PMS but I think women start deteriorating mentally after forty.

What would have been wrong with just refusing to kiss and threatening to call the cops if he did not leave?

Your right about that! I hope this guy's job isn't in risk assessment or anything like that because if it is, he isn't very good at it. I guess that means she fired him....

I agree he should not have tried to kiss her, and certainly should not have stuck his tongue down her throat (assuming that's how his tongue got to be in biting range) to "shut her up" or whatever. But a simple slap would have sufficed; nice and hard. What she did instead was excessively violent. I hope this chick does NOT have children, if she will become that violent when she is angry.

This act (biting his tongue out) seems to have been taken directly out of that Quentin Tarantino movie: Kill Bill. I wonder if they'd been watching that recently?
