A Hood County woman who was arrested after calling 911 to ask for cigarettes now admits it was a frivolous request and says she regrets it.
Linda White, 48, of Granbury, called 911 at about 1 a.m. on Feb. 11 and asked deputies to make a delivery.
"I need some cigarettes," she said in a recording of the call.
On Tuesday, she apologized and tried to explain.
"We were just kicking it in the back yard -- a few beers too many," she said. "Next thing you know, we're out of cigarettes. Well, I didn't want to drive to town. ... I was drunk, you know, but in my back yard."
"Who's the safest person to call?" she asked. "Your police department, I thought."
Drunk or not, the sheriff's office said 911 is reserved for emergencies.
"A call for deputies to bring cigarettes to the resident is not an emergency call," Hood County Chief Deputy Biff Temple said.
Two deputies responded and found White and her boyfriend, Gary Roberts.
"I just saw bright lights and knew," White said.
Roberts said he knew White was in trouble.
"I knew, because I told her, 'Somebody is fixing to go to jail,'" he said.
White was booked on a charge of abusing 911, a misdemeanor punishable by up to a $2,000 fine and 180 days in jail.
She was released on bond about six hours later, she said.
"I am deeply sorry for what I did," she said in an interview outside her home. "I'm embarrassed. It's not me."
"It is kind of funny," she said laughing.
White added that she learned the hard way not to call 911 with a frivolous request.
"They don't deliver -- they pick up," she said.

around here they would have taken to the P.D. made her take a breath test and ....bam...public intox....that's where the real money is. 2K minimum, No jail time to take away the new jail cells from the 150 a day rent to the feds !! ...just good ol hard cash.

The woman was later quoted saying "Thank God they didn't find the sheep with the blond wig and makeup ma husband keeps tied up in the backyard for when I'm too drunk ta screw."
My ex-mother in law and the judge who presided over my divorce were trapped in a burning building, and there was only enough time to save one of them. It was one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make ...... have lunch or go to a movie.

That little stunt was true story. going to court and being a smart a$$ just don't go well together, i was 16 at the time. the speeding ticket cost me 35 bucks the contempt fine was 500 bucks, a hell of a lot of money in the 60's.

IA.ScooterTramp, they can't charge her with public intoxication. If you had bothered to read the article she was sitting in HER OWN BACKYARD. You can't be charged with public intoxication if you aren't in public. However, I hope she receives a hefty fine for misusing the 911 system.
I ordered a pizza last week via 911. It hasn't come yet either. Nor my beer from 7-11. I guess Colorado is as mean as Texas. Duh.

A woman in Aloha, Oregon, called 911 because she thought a deputy who had just visited her house on a complaint was good-looking. After her neighbors reported a noise complaint, two sheriff's deputies knocked on Lorna Jeanne Dudash's door. One of them caught her eye. When they left, Dudash dialed 9-1-1 in a desperate attempt to get the deputy she described to dispatchers as “a cutie pie” to return.
A frustrated German housewife called police because her husband would not stop watching porn movies. The 44-year-old woman, from Aachen, dialed the emergency police number and told the dispatcher in a weepy voice there was an emergency. But when officers arrived at the scene they found her pacing the apartment while her husband, 46, sat in front of the TV watching a blue movie.
A man in Beaverton, Oregon called 911 when a nightclub refused to let him inside. Employees at "The Caribe" nightclub in Beaverton said they didn't let Edgar Dieguez-Lopez inside because he was too intoxicated. Dieguez-Lopez then called 911 and complained to dispatchers that he was denied entry. Dispatchers explained through a translator that the club has a right to refuse service and asked him to wait outside for the police. Officers responded to the club and found cocaine inside one of Dieguez-Lopez's socks. He was arrested on drug charges.

Actually, I consider Miss White incredible smart and responsible for a drunk. She did not want to hurt anybody by driving drunk, so using her drunk logic 'hey call the police'. This was handled all wrong, the call taker should have just told Miss White of her error , then send an officer for a wellness check. This was just silly, unless that PSAP has had problems with Miss White before. Who will not be going to jail for this.

Although this woman had to have been totally smashed, I think the police department should have seen the humor and actually delivered the cigarettes. They should have charged her $100 $5 for the smokes and $95 to save the courts time. OR maybe pick her up and on the way to jail stop at the store and buy them for her, knowing that she would not be able to smoke any until she got out. A little torment.

FWIW - I believe that people should have a way of communicating via phone; whether it is a live jack for a landline to call 911 or a cell phone with X amount of minutes. However - no texting or data. If you can pay for texting and data's additional features on a free phone, go get your own prepaid at Walmart.

BTW, when transcribing southern speak, "fixing to go to jail" should be "fixin' togoda jail", "you all" is "y'all", and "kind of" is "kinda". Read it that way for a more authentic feel.
