Majority of Americans believe illegal immigrants should be deported

People line up for assistance with paperwork for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program at the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles in Los Angeles, California, August 15, 2012.

WASHINGTON — More than half of U.S. citizens believe that most or all of the country's 11 million illegal immigrants should be deported, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Wednesday that highlights the difficulties facing lawmakers trying to reform the U.S. immigration system.

The online survey shows resistance to easing immigration laws despite the biggest push for reform in Congress since 2007.

Thirty percent of those polled think that most illegal immigrants, with some exceptions, should be deported, while 23 percent believe all illegal immigrants should be deported.

Only 5 percent believe all illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay in the United States legally, and 31 percent want most illegal immigrants to stay.

These results are in line with other polls in recent years, suggesting that people's views on immigration have not changed dramatically since the immigration debate reignited in Congress last month, according to Ipsos pollster Julia Clark.

"It's not Americans' views that are shifting. It is that the political climate is ripe for this discussion," after the November election when Hispanics voted overwhelmingly in favor of Democratic President Barack Obama, she said.

"Democrats feel that the time is right to capitalize on their wins and Republicans feel that they had a bad blow and are eager to reach out to Hispanics," she added.

Polls show that most Americans back immigration reform, although they often have different ideas of what that means, with some people favoring looser immigration laws while others want to see greater border security.

A group of eight U.S. senators are working on a bipartisan deal to enact immigration reform, the first major attempt since a similar overhaul died in Congress six years ago.

The senators' proposal calls for a full path to citizenship for illegal immigrants once they pay back taxes and a fine and wait in line behind others applying to become Americans.

A plan by Obama has similar provisions, but the senators want any move to relax immigration laws dependant on boosting security on the southern border.

Attitudes toward immigration are polarized by party, according to another the Reuters/Ipsos poll. Seventy-five percent of Republicans think all or most immigrants should be deported, compared to 40 percent of Democrats who think the same.

Republican Senator John McCain, one of the eight senators in the group, had his own encounter with citizens angered by illegal immigration on Tuesday when residents of his state of Arizona complained bitterly at a town hall meeting about the lack of security on the border with Mexico.

One man asked why troops had not been deployed to the border.

"Why didn't the army go down there and stop them? Because the only thing that stops them I'm afraid to say, and it's too damn bad, is a gun," the man said.

Another resident, Keith Smith, got into a testy exchange with McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential candidate whose views on immigration have fluctuated over the years.

"Cut off their welfare and all their stuff and they'll go back," Smith said, referring to undocumented workers.

McCain had been trying to explain his position: "You're not telling these people the truth. They mow our lawns, they care for our babies, they clean ... that's what those people do," he said.

The Arizona lawmaker, whose position on immigration hardened during the 2010 midterm elections before softening again, is a key part of the Republican side of the senators' bipartisan immigration effort.

Wednesday's Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted Friday through Tuesday and surveyed 1,443 Americans over the age of 18.

The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online poll is measured using a credibility interval. In this survey, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.

McCain is a sleazeball, he will not enforce immigration policy, but he will vote to move native american Indians on radioactive land. I like how he said that these immigrants mow our lawns, they care for our babies, and clean. The truth is that the illegal immigrants do those types of things for the wealthy people of this country, and those people don't want to have to pay A LEGAL AMERICAN a decent wage to do those jobs. The wealthy and corporate america love having illegal immigrants to do work for slave wages, and they know they won't complain because they are afraid of being deported. I dare anyone to look at the personal lives of the lawmakers in Washington and local governments, and if they have anyone caring for their babies, mowing their lawns, and cleaning their houses, it will be ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. I have worked around wealthy people most of my life, and I see the people that do those things for them, and they are almost all illegal immigrants. It is the people that run this country and the wealthy that get to mingle with them that are fueling the need for illegal slave labor. They are the cause of this problem, and they damn sure aren't going to fix it either. They don't care a bit if an illegal immigrant takes a legal Americans job, as long as they get their low paid slave laborers.

If we are going to fix this problem, then we are going to have to force Washington and other parts of the government to start enforcing the laws that we already have. I would really like to see someone, or a group of people SUE the federal government for not enforcing our immigration laws, and not protecting our borders. Somehow they have forgotten that they work for us, not the other way around. I am sick and tired of the invasion we have going on. Not only can illegal immigrants cross our borders, but people that wish to do serious harm to this country and its legal citizens can cross with nuclear, biological, and conventional weapons with very little effort.

When are the people of this country going to wake up and see that this is a very serious problem!! Get on the phone, and tell your REPRESENTATIVES in all levels of government that you want this problem fixed, or they will be looking for a new job by the next election.

Finally the truth (which I've been saying all along) is substantiated in this poll: Americans want for their immigration laws (THE MOST GENEROUS LAWS IN THE WORLD) to be enforced! O's demand insistence upon amnesty for ILLEGAL FOREIGN NATIONALS (at the expense of the American and Legal immigrant workers IS POSITIVELY UNFORGIVABLE!!!

American leaders (including O) are supposed to be representing the best interests of AMERICAN CITIZENS and LEGAL IMMIGRANTS rather than tripping over each other to sell out the American worker (whose opportunities and rights are being devastated-- hitting poorer and working class Americans the hardst and disproportionately impacting minorities). Instead, the fools in office now (namely O, for whom I voted in '08 but not in '12) are engaging in this pandering display in favor of the ILLEGAL FOREIGN NATIONALS, their offspring, and their insufferable advocates!

Pledging rewards and special treatment incident to immigration lawbreaking now is the WORST WAY to demonstrate a commitment to enforce our immigration laws in the future. Reagan's 1986 Amnesty is Exhibit A, evidencing the fact that rewarding ILLEGALITY only serves to further incentivize MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS MORE INSTANCES OF LAWBREAKING IN THE FUTURE? Indeed, a commitment to reward lawbreaking will only serve to engender more lawbreaking in the future and that will be followed by demands for special treatment for that lawbreaking-- JUST LIKE NOW!

The ONLY thing that is "broken" is our leaders' commitment to enforce the very laws they are legally duty-bound to enforce! We permit 1 Million LEGAL immigrants into this country each year (more than all other countries combined). The issue is NOT whether we choose immigration vs. no immigration. The correct issue IS whether the lawbreakers (the ILLEGAL FOREIGN NATIONALS) will be rewarded and granted special treatment for their lawbreaking!

A GOVERNMENT WHICH REFUSES TO ENFORCE ITS OWN LAWS IS INTOLERABLE!

THE FOLLOWING RECENT ARTICLES EXPLAIN JUST A FRACTION OF THE CATASTROPHIC COSTS THAT ILLEGAL FOREIGN NATIONALS IMPOSE UPON AMERICAN TAXPAYER RESOURCES:

See February 12, 2013 Miami Herald article entitled: $2 Billion Medicaid Program Helps Mostly Illegal Immigrants":

. . . During the debate over the 2010 federal health care overhaul, Democrats promised that illegal immigrantswouldn’t be among the 27 million people who’d gain coverage. President Barack Obama repeated that pledge last month when he outlined his immigration plan.

But while federal law generally bars illegal immigrants from being covered by Medicaid, a little-known part of the state-federal health insurance program for the poor pays about $2 billion a year for emergency treatment for a group of patients who, according to hospitals, mostly comprise illegal immigrants. Most of it goes to reimburse hospitals for delivering babies for women who show up in their emergency rooms, according to interviews with hospital officials and studies. . . .

See January 8, 2013, NBC.com (this site) (posting an Associated Press article) entitled "Health Reform Threatens Clinic Care for Illegals":

. . . But in states with large illegal immigrant populations, the math may not work, especially if lawmakers don't expand Medicaid, the joint state-federal health program for the poor and disabled.

When the reform has been fully implemented, illegal immigrants will make up the nation's second-largest population of uninsured, or about 25 percent. The only larger group will be people who qualify for insurance but fail to enroll, according to a 2012 study by the Washington-based Urban Institute.

And since about two-thirds of illegal immigrants live in just eight states, those areas will have a disproportionate share of the uninsured to care for.

In communities "where the number of undocumented immigrants is greatest, the strain has reached the breaking point," Rich Umbdenstock, president of the American Hospital Association, wrote last year in a letter to Obama, asking him to keep in mind the uncompensated care hospitals gave to that group. "In response, many hospitals have had to curtail services, delay implementing services, or close beds."

The federal government has offered to expand Medicaid, but states must decide whether to take the deal. And in some of those eight states — including Texas, Florida and New Jersey — hospitals are scrambling to determine whether they will still have enough money to treat the remaining uninsured.

Without a Medicaid expansion, the influx of new patients and the looming cuts in federal funding could inflict "a double whammy" in Texas, said David Lopez, CEO of the Harris Health System in Houston, which spends 10 to 15 percent of its $1.2 billion annual budget to care for illegal immigrants.

Realistically, taxpayers are already paying for some of the treatment provided to illegal immigrants because hospitals are required by law to stabilize and treat any patients that arrive in an emergency room, regardless of their ability to pay. The money to cover the costs typically comes from federal, state and local taxes.

A solid accounting of money spent treating illegal immigrants is elusive because most hospitals do not ask for immigration status. But some states have tried.

California, which is home to the nation's largest population of illegal immigrants, spent an estimated $1.2 billion last year through Medicaid to care for 822,500 illegal immigrants.

The New Jersey Hospital Association in 2010 estimated that it cost between $600 million and $650 million annually to treat 550,000 illegal immigrants.

And in Texas, a 2010 analysis by the Health and Human Services Commission found that the agency had provided $96 million in benefits to illegal immigrants, up from $81 million two years earlier. The state's public hospital districts spent an additional $717 million in uncompensated care to treat that population.

If large states such as Florida and Texas make good on their intention to forgo federal money to expand Medicaid, the decision "basically eviscerates" the effects of the health care overhaul in those areas because of "who lives there and what they're eligible for," said Lisa Clemans-Cope, a senior researcher at the Urban Institute.

McCain is wishy washy on ILLEGAL immigration- a flip flopper depending on the circumstances. ILLEGALS should be deported at their own expense. Yea, and some of that 51% were dead. Unfortunately, when you deal with a crook like Obama and his cronies, they will do anything to get their agenda taken care of. When 59 voting districts don't have even one vote for Romney, that shows how illegal the election was. BTW, I've never voted McCain in. In AZ, it is not safe. I was told by a highway patrolman the other day that if I was going to drive on that highway (Interstate 10), I needed to keep a loaded gun with me because there were so many cartels controlling the area.

All the jobs now being done by people who are here illegally, were done by legal citizens before the Mexicans stole their jobs. As for picking fruit, cutting grass, roofing, etc, those jobs were always done by citizens also, before the Mexicans stole their jobs by cheaper labor. And, as soon as the illegal Mexicans are given amnesty, they will no longer want to work for cheap wages, they'll want enough to live like everyone else. So in the end, all they did was barge in and steal jobs. We already have an working immigration system, they are not using it. I have a simple answer for them: 1-Go home, probably Mexico or some Latin American country. 2- Fill out the immigration papers that you did not fill out before. 3- We'll call you when we need you, when our own legal citizens all are employed, people graduating from sholls and colleges here all have jobs, and we need workers.

Well thankfully Obama will ignore the will of the people on this issue. After all this is about votes, and pandering for the Democratic Party. Although, if there were a clause in the Obama amnesty bill that said any illegal taking advantage of amnesty could not vote for the next 25 years, then the real Obama would emerge, and that bill would be vetoed. Washington isn't about doing what the American people want, or even what is in their best interest, Washington is about political expediency and nothing else.

Brian , Here on MSNBC they are not posting what John McCain actually proposed. He wants the border totally secured,McCain realizes that the drug train leads from Nogales to Phoenix. He wants a forge proof Social Security card, and that you speak, read, and write English. Repayment of any Income Tax or any Govt service they recieved while here illegally. Last but not least, they get in the back of the line of exsisting applicants. This sounds to me like more than the Immigrants would have went thru if they would have come here legally, and rightly so. Remember,John McCain has to deal with the Obama White House. The President doesn't want to deal,he wants to dictate. Barack Obama used the Mexicans in the last election the way he used the blacks in his own community to get his Senate seat. Obama promised them the world, well give it to them Barack! how about we also crack down on the people who employ the "illegals"? most of them know full well who they are hiring and they do it because they want to exploit a cheap source of labor. I worked for a company that would terminate *wink wink* people who were found to have fraudulent documentation, only to re-hire them as soon as they showed up with a new name and paperwork.

another local company hires "illegals" and threatens to sic immigration on them if they complain about the unsafe working conditions or the low pay

there would be less incentive to come here illegally if there weren't so many greedy people who want cheap labor. No jobs = no reason to come here

This is what our goverment has come down to. This is what the most important issues facing this country -- immigration and the country's own sovereignty has come down to. This, and a refusal to govern.

In 1989, when the government granted amnesty to over 3-million illegals, it promised that this would never happen again. Yet, here we, it's 2013, and these fools, like McCain, are talking about amnesty again. And not just for 3-million, but 13-million illegals.

Nothing has changed. The game remains the same. Our government lies to us. And our government hates us. They must be stoppped.

This absolutely NOT about HATE!!!! I do NOT hate Mexicans. What I dislike and DO NOT accept is their belief that they are entitled to break the laws of this country by entering it illegally then believing that they are ENTITLED to job's, housing, free education, cash assistance, food stamps, health Insurance or having their health care needs met at legal citizens expense. It is about those who enter with visas and then refuse to leave when they expire and believe that they are entitled to everything I already mentioned and more. It is about a group of people believing that American citizens should pay for their anchor babies college education when we can't afford to send our own legal American children. It is about BILLIONS of tax payer dollars being used to support them annually. It is about believing tht they have NO RIGHT to come to our country and participate in illegal drug use and selling, participating in crime including but not limited to rape, robbery, kidnapping, assaults, domestic violence, child abuse, pornography, prostitution, human trafficking and much much MORE!!!!!!

I could continue and basically write a book about all the reasons why illegals should be DEPORTED and why they do not have a right to remain here and receive entitlments our own citizens can't get. I could write about the billions spent annually housing illegals in jails and prisons for breaking the laws of this country and spending BILLIONS more supporting their families while their are incarcerated. I could write about this group of undereducated or even illiterate people who barely speak or do not speak english and are unable to read or write english. There are volumes and volumes of things to say!!!!!!

NO, I do NOT re-read my posts and think "Hmmm, maybe I shouldn't have said that"?

This is a problem long time in the making. It's not necessarily a huge problem when they pick fruit, it is a big problem when they get govt assistance, housing, medical etc and keep having kids. Those kids grow to take jobs away from people that have been here already. Meanwhile usually the kids parents still remain illegal. The problem also lies in the EMPLOYERS. let me repeat the EMPLOYERS hire them period. The employers are usually WEALTHY they are perpetuating this mess. Farm-owners, land ownder and people who hire them for construction and housekeeping are the people that keep them comming here. Furthermore how do they recieve an ID here?! I have to bring in so much documentation simply to register a car that they already have on file! I have to prove I have the car they have me on file for owning are you serious! It's not a race thing i don't have a problem with immigrants. It is simple economics there is NO MORE ROOM FOR IMMIGRANTS there are way too many LEGALS here already that are starving. Please people it is simple economics. I can talk i live in CA which houses the most in the nation.

Why have immigration laws at all if you can enter the country illegally and stay? Nearly everyone here has had family members who have immigrated to this country and have done so legally. I not only think we should deport people who enter the country illegally, but we should charge their home countries fees and fines for the trouble of shipping them back. Maybe after Mexico, China and other countries start having to pay us millions of dollars each year when we send their citizens back to them, they'll start watching their own borders and shipping industries.

Can we have similar immigration law that has Mexico and most countries. Most countries deport illegals immigrants and do not provide any help, not even emergency room, nor free school for their children's, and child's of illegal immigrants do not get automatic citizenship. Here we receive them with a welcome card and put them in line to receive citizenship, why , because we all are illegals, our ancestors the Pilgrims came illegal to this country, this is how this administration is adoctrinating to government employees, yes it is crazy , but this is the left wing philosophy.

We have immigration laws that work if enforced. Before the government decided to quit enforcing them any company that hired them was subject to rapidly increasing fines. I remember some companies getting put out of business for hiring them.

I am not sure when but somewhere in maybe the late 80s, early 90s they opened the gates and let them in as the 1% decided that they needed a cheaper labor source. They INS still did roundups on construction sites for a while but companies were no longer pursued or fined. Then it seemed they dropped any pretense of trying to enforce the laws at all.

So the 1% has their supply of cheaper labor now and are probably just as much behind reform as anyone. It seems this all happened about the same time our politicians just became outright whores to special interests and sold our country down the road.

The main focus of a new immigration law must be to stop illegal immigration not to legalize 11+ millions of undocumented people.Politicians are switching priorities if we do not stop illegal immigrants in few more years we will be in a worst situation. By the way what is doing Obama about all the illegal immigrants jumping the fence every day, even now as we speak. So they mow our lawns, pick fruit, and baby sit our children? Hell, when I was a kid you saw high school kids doing these same jobs. it was one of the rights of passage and helped prepare the youth of our nation for the adult work force. Now the kids sit on their hind ends and play video games while these illegals do the jobs that the kids traditionally did. This crap about crop pickers and lawn mowers and maids is just that, a bunch of crap. Send 'em packin and give the kids their jobs back. I'm sorry to say that this is just another indicator of how bad things are for the next generations to come.

When I as an U.S. citizen goes to jail and pays fines for breaking our laws, these interlopers get the royal treatment for breaking the law. How does that work? It's just plain mind boggling.

I say that we vote every single politician out of office and start fresh with untainted loyalties. Certainly we should vote out every single one who votes to give these illegals the royal treatment.

I feel absolutely no responsibility to allow the kids either. I hold my kids accountable and require that they learn the tough lessons. Perhaps they and their parents should learn the lesson of following the laws of a nation they wish to imigrate to. To do otherwise is just telling them that it is OK to come into our country and break our laws.

As for the whole who really deserves to be here argument? Well, this wasn't a nation with a soveriegn government when the pilgrims showed up and now it is. There in lies the difference.

There are what--12 million people here without documents? (I NEVER call them illegal immigrants or aliens--people are NEVER illegal! It is as much a slur as the "N-word") They won't be rounded up and deported--it just won't happen, because the government has neither the resources or personnel for it (usless you resort to the military kicking in doors and dragging terrified people out--and imagine what THAT would look like to the rest of the world!) however much extremists on the Right would like it. That said, neither is there going any "free pass" for these people, either, however much extremists on the Left would like it. And there is one more reason that there will probably always be undocumented workers here: American capitalism's addiction to, and dependence on, the cheap labor these people represent.

Bush Plan Seeks to Restore Food Stamps for Noncitizens

    By ROBERT PEAR
    Published: January 10, 2002

The Bush administration proposed today to restore food stamps to many legal immigrants, whose eligibility for benefits was severely restricted by the 1996 welfare law.

The White House said that at least 363,000 people -- legal immigrants who have not become citizens -- would qualify for food stamps under the plan, to be included in the budget President Bush sends Congress in early February. The proposal would cost the federal government $2.1 billion over 10 years, the administration said. In October, 18.4 million people were receiving food stamps.

Mr. Bush's plan, or something like it, has an excellent chance of becoming law. The Senate is considering such changes as part of a far-reaching bill to reauthorize farm and nutrition programs. Under the proposal, the White House said, noncitizens with low incomes could qualify for food stamps after living here legally for five years. A similar test already applies to legal immigrants seeking Medicaid or cash assistance.

The welfare bill passed by Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton in 1996 made noncitizens ineligible for food stamps and many other types of assistance financed with federal money.

    Lawmakers Resist Temporary-Worker Proposal

    By Michael A. Fletcher
    Washington Post
    Staff Writer
    Sunday, January 2, 2005; Page A06

President Bush's plan to liberalize the nation's immigration laws to
allow millions of undocumented workers the opportunity for legal status appears
to be on a collision course with newly aroused sentiment among House Republicans
pushing for a crackdown on illegal immigration.

Bush describes his immigration proposal as one of the top goals of his
second term, calling it a humane way to get a handle on the nation's mushrooming
illegal immigration problem. Republican strategists, led by White House chief
political adviser Karl Rove, also see the proposal as an important element in
their plan to expand the party's base among the nation's fast-growing Hispanic
    population.

The key prong in Bush's plan is a temporary-worker program that would offer the
nation's estimated 10 million illegal immigrants a chance to earn legal status
that would allow them to stay in the country as long as six years. Once they
register as temporary workers, they would be eligible to begin the long process
of applying for citizenship or permanent residency.

"It's a compassionate way to treat people who come to our country. It
recognizes the reality of the world in which we live," Bush said during a news
conference last week. "There are some people -- there are some jobs in America
that Americans won't do and others are willing to do."

Liberals look for logical answers - conservatives just hit the Easy (hate) Button.

How clueless are you when it comes to how much it would cost to shut down the border - I guess military spending isn't enough wasted money. It is cheaper keep the present system than it would be to enact a full on offensive against immigrants.

I live in Tucson, Arizona - illegal central - if they don't bother me, then why is some conservative in Minnesota or Idaho all bent out of shape?

Seems like nobody is doing the math. 11 million. Each one would have to be detained, processed, and transported. now that may seem simple, but it's not. And more then not being simple, nobody is thinking of the cost. how much would it cost to bus 11 million people? how long would it take? how long does each court case take(and cost). how much in police over time? how much for detention centers that we don't have? if you go through the logistics and cost of each person going through this process, then multiply it by 11 million you just might get the picture. It would cost at least tens of thousands of dollars each, which could wind up many billions. Any of you have an extra billion you can donate? didn't think so. This is just another bull issue like abortion. the only value it has , is to divide a nation.

They are nothing but trouble, want to take over all the southern states, cost us billions of dollars each year they are here and do nothing for the USA.

I used to like Mexico until they stated coming into the US in droves and I have seen first hand what they do to a neighborhood. Destroy it, just like they have did to there birth country.

Our government is putting people who aren't even citizens before the citizens of this great nation. Many of the illegals come here and get free everything, while the actual citizens are barely getting by. They get free education, medicine, hospital treatment, food stamps, low income housing, dental care, eye care.....while the working class of AMERICA can't afford most of these things. How is that fair? THEIR OWN COUNTRY needs to take care of THEIR OWN CITIZENS! I am sick of it!

I have long said that I understand the plight of the illegal immigrant wanting to better themselves and families. The problem is that they are doing it illegally, and are placing our laws secondary to their needs. It should be a felony, not a misdemeanor to be here illegally, and the penalties should be strictly enforced! Instead we have a government that actually rewards law breakers, by way of giving them financial assistance, to live here illegally! Another issue is that they put US citizens at financial risk by breaking other laws, again putting our laws secondary to their needs, due to their economic situation, ie. driving without insurance, driving unregistered or uninspected vehicles etc.! We were promised at the last Amnesty that it wasn't going to happen again, Lo and Behold we are sending the message to come on over, as it will happen again, and again, because we are not true to our word! Think of our unemployment rate, if we did not have the millions of illegal immigrants working here!

Larry's point is that too many Repukes totally forget that GWB wanted illegal aliens to become American citizens. That was just fine back then with the Repukes. It was, after all, a REPULSICAN president who proposed it. It didn't happen then but now that a DEMOCRAT President is considering a pathway for these people to become citizens, the Repukes are outraged. Pathetic hypocrites. Or are you just claiming squatters rights? Read the tablets on the Statue of Liberty. The first illegal immigrants were the ones who set the groundwork for the opening of the doors for people who want a better life. Look in the mirror.

Oh, it is SO nice to finally see an honest poll on this issue!

America naturalizes more immigrants as citizens each year than all other nations of the world COMBINED, the vast majority of these immigrants coming from Mexico. We naturalized 14 million immigrants as citizens between 2000 and 2010 alone. Bush's 1990 Immigration Act quadrupled the number of immigrants we receive each year, and we've broken records for number of legal immigrants to this country every year since, millions more
than Ellis Island received in it's heyday. Millions of illegal immigrants were granted amnesty in the 80s, while Americans were promised a secure border and strict enforcement of legal employment policies in exchange. All we got was the amnesty, and now they want to grant amnesty again, though government officials promised in the 80s that they never would do it a second time. In 30 years, there will be more hispanics living in America than in Mexico, and they will be the largest ethnicity in this country. That's a fact, and even that has nothing to do with illegals, but is the result of birth rates combined with our current rate of LEGAL immigration. America is the easiest country in the world to migrate to, so you can count me as one of the Democrats who not only believes all of the illegals should be deported, but that we also should repeal Bush's 1990 Immigration Act. The only purpose of that Act was to flood America with Mexicans because the Bush family hoped that George P. Bush, their hispanic George Bush, would be the third President in the family.

If you want to know where the illegals are working, ask Panda Express, Walmart, Chipotle, Sizzler, Pro's Ranch Markets, Koch Foods, Krispy Kreme Donuts Inc., American Apparel, McDonald's, Agriprocessors Inc., Pilgrim's Pride, Del Monte Produce, Verizon, Swift and Company, Golden State Fence Company, Smithfield Foods, etc. When McCain claims illegals are mowing our lawns and watching our children, he is only talking about himself. I don't hire illegals, which is why I am enraged enough at companies that do to name them.

I logged off and then began to think back to the mid 60s. I've already said that my mom was from Gy. and came here in her 30s (married dad and became a citizen). She didn't have to work, but she did anyway. But as a little kid, I remember going to a Mexican restaurant that was just a tiny hole, and was THE best place to go 20 years later...and the only people that worked there were all family. And an Italian restaurant that was a to-die-for place. And a butcher shop run by 2 German brothers. A laundry run by (don't stereotype! ) a Chinese family that could do absolutely anything involving sewing. A guy who was German/Italian who hand-made the best sound systems money could buy. A guy from France who could fix anything mechanical...even the finest European engines (he made a ton of bucks over the decades!). Now I live in this little town 45 years later, and I can see the work of others not from the U.S., busting their butts. Getting up at dark-thirty and staying till long after the sun goes down. I look at the people I know, and they b**ch if they're asked to stay an hour over their shift. They get O.T. pay, but so what? I see "these others" (hehe..a McCainism) working 18 hour days and no O.T. Just trying to make some sort of profit. I think perhaps we gripe a bit much because we realize that "immigrants" will work their a**es off while we sit and get about 1/8th of a mile of walk-time, on the job, and the hardest thing we Might do is move a box. Maybe. Maybe we should actually get up and DO something, and maybe the Big Dogs might decide we're worth keeping, and stop shipping the companies out, and unemploying us. Oh, wait!...that would mean accepting culpability and responsibilty...whoops...my bad.

You should be Arrested and deported back to your own Country! .....Simply as that! . ....And to all of you who think you have RIGHTS you do not , only citizens have Rights. ......Those born here by Illegal Parents are Illegitimate and victims of the criminality of your Illegal Parents. ........Your a drain on our resources and our economy, work for next to nothing, become gangs that sell drugs and rob and kill, Get on welfare and steal from taxpayers, plus do sub-standard work and live up to your stereotype!!!!!.............Do us a favor and deport yourselves!.......... The Rats in the cellar you know who you are!!!............ I may sound a little callous but I have the RIGHT to be. ..........I have had 2 cars totaled by "Illegals" who ran red lights, had another one stolen for my tools, and had an " Illegal" try to STAB me over a Concert T-shirt after the show - he did not know i knew Judo!!!!.....They all got Deported only after they got caught doing things. ............I studied Constitutional Law and Others..........ILLEGAL is ILLEGAL.......Time to send them back - they would do the same to us. ....To "OUR " Republic for which We stand and Justice for US.

Proof of that statement? Please provide a link to that commercial and, if it really exists, please provide proof of its financing.

@Riddog - I know at least one such country. India. India has at least 20M bangaladeshis living in India illegally.

In fact if you look closely - immigration happens for economic reasons and many places in the world will show so called "illegal immigration".

All immigration is good .. legal or illegal. However, it is so easy to blame all my economic problems on a poor illegal immigrant who is just trying to make through the day working on less than minimum wage.

If majority of americans believe illegals should be deported then majority of americans believe that majority of americans should be deported. I never heard that Red Indians issued any visas.

When sequestration hits, we need to bring our troops home. They will need to be employed. Rounding up & deporting all of the illegal aliens would be a good start. They have the equipment to really close down the borders. The borders could easily be overseen by the military while secure fences are built. Those fancy drones could be used to fly over the border all of the time & the drones should have night vision and be armed with bright lights to illuminate areas when the military needs bright light along with at least machine guns in case there is a violent confrontation.

The Army & USMC could take care of the land borders & the Navy could heavily patrol the waterways. The border check points could also be heavily armed. I know when I flew to Japan in route to Taiwan & Thailand on a business trip that the military of both Japan & Taiwan had extremely heavy presence in the airports and surrounding areas. My passport was checked multiple times in both countries. It was almost frightening to see about 50 to 100 military personnel armed with full-auto weapons making sure there were no transgressor. Mexico is the same way and has heavy penalties for illegal immigrants. I know people that were grateful to get back to the United States after their sentences were served and they were deported back home. The United States should treat illegal aliens the same way as other countries treat illigal aliens in their country. Make illegal aliens from any nation grateful to get back to their home country.

There are immigration laws that should be followed for anyone that wants to become a United States Citizen. They should be followed. All of the crap Bush & all of the others of any party have pulled to get votes should be a criminal offense. The American public should not have to pay for these people. There should not be any such thing as "anchor babies" on the books. There are laws already for those that are persecuted in their countries that allow them to ask for citizenship. There are laws for people wanting to come to America and be legal citizens. The immigrants that want to come to the United States should learn English and use it as their primary language anywhere except for their homes. They can still use other languages wherever they want, but English should be the main language for business and anything that concerns court or legal applications/transactions.

Immigrants should be proud to learn and use the English language. Immigrants should be proud to become legal citizens of the United States. The "Pledge of Allegiance" should always be spoken in English. My grandparents were so very proud to learn English, to say the "Pledge of Allegiance" in English and to take the Citizenship Oath in English. That was one of the greatest moments in their lives. It was a lot of work for my grandparents to become legal United States citizens. They have passed down the values and morals of that to their children, my parents, who taught it to me and I passed that to my children. My children are teaching those same values to my grandchildren.

We need to bring back the values and morals of the countries founders. We will welcome any immigrant that comes in legally. It is an honor to have legal immigrants come to the United States of America. I wish them great success and hope they continue the tradition of making the United States a better country for all to live in.

Bush, Obama or any elected official that tries to change the laws need to do it through the courts. They need to quit ignoring the laws of the United States or face trial for breaking the laws. Congress needs to start listening to the citizens of the United States or be forced to face consequences. If there is any doubt about the matter, put it up for a vote by the citizens. Be sure there is no fraud during the votes like there appears to have been in the last few major elections. The same thing goes for the gun laws. Every citizen wants to be safe and very rarely will the police be on the scene when a crime happens. There needs to be more accountability to the people.

There should also be no laws passed that "we have to pass it to know what is in it". That right there is illegal representation of the people. I wonder how the people would vote "YES" for the "Obamaphone" debacle. I am a United States citizen that has traveled around the world twice. I have seen the failure of the "Universal Healthcare" in other countries. The Social Security funds have been robbed by previous administrations. I believe it started in the Reagan administration. It has disappeared in further administrations. I am old and disabled. I turned down the offer for an "Obamaphone". I have pride in myself and my country. Everyone in the United States should have that same pride.

One last thing. We need to kick out the United Nations. Obama has made secret arrangements with the United Nations where he had a previously signed document delivered to the United Nations within days of his re-election. Obama does not want any citizen to have guns. The DHS (Department of Homeland Security) has 7,000 full-auto weapons along with enough ammunition to put 5 bullets into every American citizen. DHS has ordered printed targets to practice with that have pictures of the elderly, young children and pregnant women to shoot target practice with. Obama has an agenda his is following that is destroying the United States by dividing the country. He goes on "The View" and "Oprah" to put emotional feelings into people, yet Obama now refuses to have open press conferences with any of the major networks like ABC, NBC & CBS along with totally putting down Fox News along with Rush Limbaugh. I can understand not caring for Rush Limbough. Rush is an antagonist. However, the 3 major networks and even Fox News deserve a chance for interviews. The citizens of the United States deserve to know what is going on in government. We deserve to know the truth and correct time-line regarding Benghazi along with further details of Eric Holder's "Fast & Furious" program.

Obama has promised transparency. Obama is failing the citizens that voted for him. Obama does work for the American United States citizens. He does need to be accountable.

This is all my opinion. I believe in the United States of America. I believe in the Constitution as the countries forefathers intended. Stop the illegal immigration. Allow legal immigration as set by law. Tell us the truth regarding Benghazi and Fast & Furious. Stop playing peoples emotions and do the job you were elected to do. Get the friggin budget under control and pay down the deficit. Quit wasting my tax dollars on taking care of illegals and supplying Obamaphones to the masses. Our elected officials better start listening to the public. My grandchildren do not deserve to be paying for all of the wrongs being committed by certain elected officials in this administration.

      Wow...

Where's Fisty Rodehard, Pigface and the other leftie paid bloggers today???

Surely, they all weren't sleeping to miss the "first" post....

Surely, they would explain how the polls are wrong, and why Obama's agenda of amnesty for all is supported by the MAJORITY of Americans...NOT.

This President is digging himself in deeper...

He has miscalculated his SLIM 4% of-the-vote victory as some sort of "legend in his own mind" delusion that the American people actually share all his views.

From "gun control"- which he keeps trying to push down the throats of law-abiding citizens DESPITE that majority not supporting most of what he is proposing...

To immigration reform, which is making progress in Congress- imagine that! Then he chooses to stick his nose in, where it's not wanted.

Just wait until all the SHTF as costs for Obamacare rear their ugly head this year- the ones that Pelosi didn't tell you about. Better hold onto your wallet, and hope your employer doesn't fire you to control costs.

The President DOES NOT make laws, Mr. Obama...

CONGRESS, negotiates and passes legislation for new laws, which you then choose to sign into law, or veto...

Get off your throne, King Obama.

Enforce the laws on the books now. ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS broke the law. They should go to jail for breaking the law, then they should be deported.

The problem Obama has is that he promised that he would absolve the ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS of breaking the law in order to get elected.

One other way Obama has made this nation worse. Promising to absolve people of breaking the law.

        One last little rant.

Texas is using CSCope to teach the children in schools. Parents that care for their children need to check and see if their schools are using that for teaching. They are teaching communism, to control population growth, that the Boston Tea Party was done by terrorists instead of patriots and the lessons include teachings of ISLAM.

        http:// dailycaller . com/2013/02/21/ten-shocking-things-a-huge-texas-curriculum-conglomerate-has-foisted-on-public-school-students/

Please remove the spaces in the link

I hope the link posted. If it did not, please feel free to email me for the link. I would not want my children being taught by these lesson plans.

It also has lessons regarding many other things that are not the truth about history. They totally ignore Christianity and promote Islam. They are not truthful about Guantanamo Bay and the teachings are just full of lies. I can not believe the government is doing this crap.

This is my opinion. Sonya Jones

I think any person who is here illegally, no matter how they got here, should be able to apply to stay here; IF they a) find employment, and b) are not criminals. Our country was founded by people seeking a better life, in the late 1800's, there was a "flood" of immigrants, form many countries. Both sets of my paternal grandparents came here as immigrants, one side from Ireland, the other from Germany. The same nasty things people say about the hispanic people, today, were said about them....

The problem of unemployment is NOT being caused by the immigrants; but by the corporations, that pay billions to their top execs in salaries and bonuses, while cutting corners on materials, shipping jobs to sweatshops overseas and trying to blame union worker, who just want livable wages and reasonable benefits (like health insurance, vacation time, etc.)

The vast majority of violent crimes being committed on a daily basis all over the country are being committed by American citizens against other American citizens. Wake up, America... the people you need to unite against are not the new people but the established ones, the corporations who run the country and have are way of life going down the drain! The American Dream used to be an education, a decent job, a home and a family....NOWDAYS, it has become surviving... thanks to the corporations and our own puppet government!!

blondeness...do you realize just how many people have been waiting for YEARS to immigrate to the US legally and have been denied over and over? Not because they are not good people, but because the quota has been filled? I work with a skilled IT professional from India who is separated from his wife and child because he cannot get a work permit and his wife is already working here. Her assignment was extended and now their separation extended. Yet, we have people making their way here by any means illegally and they think because they were able to make it here they should be allowed to stay? Do you have any idea how WEAK it makes the US look allowing this - and that politicians are actually finding excuses to allow them to stay?

For starters we are ALL immigrants, well except for the native americans. second illegal immigrants can't get free anything, they cant get food stamps, they cant get welfare checks, or any of the other "commodities" our citizens abuse on a daily basis. they come here to work, they get taxes deducted from their checks like everyone else. they do all the jobs that we the american people think is beneath us, and on top of all that, they put up with the abuse, bigotry, and sterotyping the we the american people dish at them. they're persecuted by the police and border patrol, they have to live in fear of being seperated from their families every time they step out of the door. that they arent perfect, true neither are we. i work for the courts and believe me there are way too many U.S. CITIZENS i wish we could deport but yet here they are pointing the finger at the guy who just wants to provide basic human necessities for their families. the "AMERICAN DREAM" belongs to everyone. Once again where would any of us be if the Native American Indians told the pilgrims "go home wetbacks, you dont have papers, you cant enter my country".

              #2.62 - Sat Feb 23, 2013 8:37 AM EST

Maria, we are not all immigrants. Maybe you are. Perhaps you meant to say we come from immigrants? Different story and yes most of us did, but they came here legally.

You assume the complaining is all about illegal immigrants is about Mexicans who sneak across the border - we the problem is bigger than that. it is about people who come to the US on student or visitor visas and then just stay. We just want people to follow the law - why should we think they will follow all the other laws if they break the law coming into thje US?

"...whose position on immigration hardened during the 2010 midterm elections before softening again..."

Is that a flip-flop? McCain was the leading advocate of the border fence/enhanced security proposal under Bush when he thought it would do him some political good. Now, the same people to whom he sold that bill of goods are taking him to task at these town hall meetings, and he looks very uncomfortable.

The GOP will change its position on this matter because their current view is politically untenable, but first, they have to figure out a spin for it that will not alienate their redneck/evangelical core. Good luck with that. :)

The German GVT handed his parents his birth certificate and told them when HE turned 18 he needed to decide if he wanted German citizenship. His parents were not allowed to stay in Germany - what a novel concept! Citizenship was not passed back to his parents simply because he was born on German soil.

Someone must not have said anything about "dual citizenship" to her in the late 50's (maybe it didn't exist then), but when she became an American citizen, Germany never told her she couldn't come back if she wanted to. Decades later she received her Pension checks, from working there when she was younger. But that's not the topic. The sad thing is, is that Mexicans will soon be returning home to jobs. As China's workers demand more money, and fuel becomes more expensive, businesses will find it makes more sense to bring manufacturing closer to home. And the left will blame the right, the right will blame the left as usual. It will be Obamas fault, it will be Bush's fault, when in fact it is everyone's fault, but mostly the voters and consumers for not demanding better than cheap products made by slave wages. Face it, the American consumer built China into what is and degraded the American industrial base just as much if not more than our politicians and corporations. No one wants to look at themselves as the problem though.

Cole, lets discuss poltics, our founding fathers had it right when they let only those with skin in the game vote. Do you actually think Obama would have been elected under those rules, not.

Would Obama have been elected when our founding fathers were in charge? Ha! Is that a serious question? No, he would not have, he probably would have been a slave, possibly owned by one of them. At most, he would have been allowed to fight and die in wars, but not vote. Our founding fathers were not perfect, as is no man/woman, they did a lot of great things and laid a good foundation with the constitution, but we need to stop acting like they were gods or even fairminded for that matter.

As for joe, it seems as you are a "no info" voter as I said nothing of self reliance or requirements in my posts.

I'm not making it up, if trends continue the way they are, Mexico will be creating a lot more jobs than we will be in the next 10 years. Sorry, Mexico won't be creating jobs, our government, businesses and our consumer dollars will be creating jobs in Mexico. That could happen here instead. Santorum had some great ideas, too bad he can't govern and leave his wacky religious beliefs at home where they belong.

Just a personal example of what is wrong with both extremes today, I have a good job with good benefits so this economy has not hurt me too bad. I did get stuck with two houses because of the housing market, and I wasn't willing to just sell and take a loss on my first home. Now, my far right wing republican friends want me to believe that it is poor people getting housing loans that they could not afford, and my left wing friends want me to believe it is all the bankers fault. The problem is, it is both for christ sake! I don't understand how people are so brainwashed to only see one myopic point of view. I blame both, and our crappy government that couldn't oversee anything because they are too busy taking payoffs from those they are supposed to be overseeing. Wake up people, both parties are horrible and they are more alike than different.

I keep watching companies sending off to China, Mexico and so on...rather than staying in the U.S. They get cheaper labor, longer hours and do not necessarily have to provide any benefits. Except for the well-paid Managers they send over. Companies do not care if Americans become unemployed when they shut down. Their bottom-line is to the stockholders. If they can get it cheaper and faster, slide by on past reputation...that's what the Big Boys will decide. They all know it will be a decade or three before any reliance on the good quality of their former name/reputation will do a mudslide. I used to watch when towns/cities would try to "grow" by giving certain benefits to Corps and Cos wanting to settle-in, providing hundreds of jobs to locals. Maybe something as basic as a "set" electric or water cost...maybe a little bit of flexibility on property taxes...etc. Now, they're all moving, and everyone wants to blame who's in Office. Heads up..I don't really see that the Prez (whoever it may be) owns/runs/CEOs all of these Corps...sorry.

ALL politicians are liars, none of them ever intended and never intend to deport these people, politicians will tell you what you wanna hear as long as it gets them elected once they are in they stab us in the back. all they care about is themselves and doing everything that a lot of Americans don't want ( raising taxes, letting illegals break our laws and rewarding them for it, just to name a a couple of things.) don't see the point of voting because what we Americans want, they ( politicians) don't want. we have no say on what we want.

Their bottom-line is to the stockholders? I think that's giving the corporations a little too much credit. In America, CEOs made 42 times what the average American worker made in 1980. Today, CEOs make 343 times as much as the average American worker. In Europe, they have labor representatives at the top who won't allow out-sourcing. Rather than compete with 3rd World wages, Europeans work fewer hours for more pay than Americans. They even have a saying: "Europeans work to live, but Americans live to work!" My mother was very much against labor representation in government until she discovered the French work week was 35 hours, and people make enough money to live on that. Other European countries are similar - everyone enjoys the benefits of increased technology, not just the corporate heads. Turns out her problem was actually with public labor unions. In private labor unions, the employer has an incentive to push back, but in public ones, nobody pushes back because taxpayers pay the wages. So we wind up with problems due to lack of competition and standards, like the teachers union.

And than you go to pick oranges, berries, grapes, etc., or work in farms all over the states for $7 x hour.Do you have a solution for that,or you are willing to go at the store and pay 20-25% more for your food?

The solution is stop handing out so much damned welfare, food stamps, wic, etc which makes it more appealing for people to sit home on their lazy arses and collect whatever the government will give them. I think if you are going to collect these handouts from the government, you should have to work for it....perhaps picking crops. Hell, you can't say pride is an issue if you are willing to sit home and do nothing.

Actually, a friend tried to get a job picking strawberries. They kept him for a week and then fired him because he didn't speak spanish and another guy's cousin just made it to town. The idea that there are jobs that Americans won't do is a myth. I've bucked hay myself during several summers back home. Oh, BTW, picking jobs are considered piecework; they get paid by the bushel. They make a buttload more than $7/hr.

Make those on welfare do work for what they recieve until they find better job. They can be made to work these jobs if they have no skills instead of just recieving handouts while they return nothing. We should not have to support able bodied people because they think a job is not good enough for them. If deporting them means there will be more jobs needing to be done, those without skills can do them decreasing the cost to taxpayers of supporting them.

So what? Why do they even bother doing polls and surveys? Our government doesn't give a tinkers damn what the people want. They do whatever they please. However they do worry about getting votes. And since the Hispanic population is the fastest growing ethnic group in the US what would be your guess as to what will happen? I think they're here to stay. I have no problem with legal immigrants but just getting on US soil shouldn't be a guarantee of the right to stay. I live in a Texas border town and it's sickening how many Mexico license plates drop their kids off every day for school so we can foot the bill for their education. And since i've probably already been branded a racist(which i'm not), all these illegals applying for government handouts should be made to get sterilized so they can't reproduce. They can't build schools fast enough here because they breed faster than rabbits. Hmmm, maybe I am getting to be a bit racist.

                  Linda, My child,

That is the way it was done back then. Stronger civilizations overcame weaker ones. Every country today had a similar start. Warfare was the way of nation making and building.

Note also that the Indians were immigrants here to North America from Siberia. There were other groups, like the Mound Builders, who were here before the Indians. They all died out long ago.

Now we can go back to warfare to keep this country if you would like. Guess who would win.....

LMAO Linda, you're trying to be so P.C. that it's comical, especially when you refer to Native Americans as "Indians". LMAO

There's no arguing the fact that the U.S.A. is a land built by immigrants… and as a child of immigrants, I'm proud of my heritage but also my American citizenship. Here's the difference however between myself and the immigrants that this article is talking about: my family emigrated to the U.S.A. legally; whereas the subject of this article are ILLEGAL immigrants.

Let them come here by LEGAL means, and people would feel vastly different. I believe, without a doubt, that every single ILLEGAL immigrant in the U.S.A. (as well as any children they had after coming here) should be rounded up and deported. If they cannot bother to come here legally, they do not deserve the benefits and rights of legal citizens and residents of the United States of America.

That is still how it is done now. Market forces prevail. There are boastings of how previous ancestors migrated here legally. The processing system was much different back then than now. You came here and said there you had no criminal record or disease, stated your name and you were proclaimed a citizen. We do need to reform our immigration system. That is clear.

11A INF… It was more difficult for people to immigrate here back in the day. They needed to be sponsored by family, the sponsor family had to have a clean record and prove the ability to house, support and employ the immigrants. Or, at least thats how my family was able to come here… THEN my family worked their butts off to pay their rent, clothe and feed their children, NEVER receiving a dime of public assistance, ever. They assimilated, learned the language, educated their children, worked 3 jobs, paid their taxes, saved their money, served in the US Army, and then became citizens of the U.S.A. Fast-forward to today… I'm married to an immigrant, a LEGAL immigrant… I completed his application myself. I paid for his application fees, etc, etc, its NOT that difficult for people to come here LEGALLY today. I should also mention that I too underwent background and financial checks by the government before my husband was granted residency. BUT that is all reasonable in my opinion! My husband does not receive public assistance, he has a full-time job, pays taxes, has learned the language, and is doing everything in his power to assimilate to the American way.

Immigration reform is different than providing a free path to citizenship to those who have immigrated ILLEGALLY. Liars, cheats, and thieves do not deserve free citizenship.

There is another big difference between then and now. During previous waves of immigration, the deal was "Come on in, and if you make it, fine. If you don't make it, you're on your own." Today, the message is, "Come on in, and if you don't make it, we'll take care of you."

The American taxpayer just can't afford to take care of everybody.

Like factory work, trades, landscaping; you know, the jobs most people want. You may be getting a better life, but at our expense and to our detriment. Like so many others have said here, go back and fix your own country and quit @!$%#ting on ours.

Illegal, in violation of the law, doing something that is against the law,,,,, what part of that is so hard to understand. We have a system to come to this country legally, use it. I don't care who you are or why you came, if you got here and are here illegally, get out. If you came here and did it by following the laws of this country, welcome.

If you are here illegally - and choose to not to learn our language (ENGLISH), and expect my tax dollars to take care of you - turn yourself right around and exit my country. I'm not working to support you, you don't deserve to be here and you are not wanted. Where is the new concept in this?

Kemberly, have you immigrated to Mexico legally or illegally?

I'll bet it was legally… that's a huge difference. Let them come here legally and there's no issue. And for the record, it's not just Mexicans who are guilty of illegal immigration… I think we all know that.

Kemberly: I'm starting to see a lot of people doing what you are doing. Ever increasing tax rates in both California and the US in general are driving a lot of people out. Much the same thing is happening in places like Michigan and Illinois, and it's been happening in New York for decades.

I doubt very seriously that people are leaving the US to escape racism.

So why don't we? How many Americans would it take to line the border? I have my carry permit.... Why is it that we continually wait for politicians to think about the true American people? Politicians have historically been anti American and pro self-survival. If Americans stood up to the illegals and forced them out (and keep them out), maybe our welfare families would have a reason to be proud of America. I know far too many people in our schools taking advantage of our system who were brought here by parents seeking a better life only to sit in a classroom and refuse to learn our language (force our schools to hire people to teach them in Spanish) and openly disrespect Americans. I'm over being a second class citizen in my own country.

Yes, demographics are changing. Expressed another way, hispanics are taking over in many border states. And once your take over is complete, you will convert your new home to third world status, just like where you came from. When you have bankrupted your new home; when the police force is corrupted by the drug gangs and the hospitals are all filthy, you will start to look for another place to immigrate to. Just like a tapeworm looking for a new host. Just like a parasite.

Yes. demographics are changing, and not for the better.

My father came to this in 1923 through Ellis Island. Spotters watched from the balconies looking for sick and diseased. If you were one of them the authorities put you back aboard a ship and sent you back to your homeland.

As a child he lived through WW1 in Austria as the Germans blew up the village he live in. When he arrived in this country he learned English, carried his papers with him, assimilated to the American way of life, lived through the Great Depression, was his high school class valedictorian, paid for his own college education, and was a P-38 fighter pilot escorting bombers out of North Africa to blow the crap out of his former homeland, returned home and eventually started his own business that he worked at 6 days a week 12 hours a day to make successful. This country never forked over a dime to pay for health insurance, welfare, education, or any other benefit provided to illegal immigrants.

He raised his family to do the same.

                    So Jonathan........what's your point??

My great-grandparents also immigrated here legally through Ellis Island. They learned the language, took citizenship classes and were self-supporting. That's what legal immigration looks like. I just wish that the "leaders" of this country would listen to us and follow the law. There's no reform to be done, just enforce what's already there.

We need more educated, competent and hard working people who can accomodate to a new way of doing things and have the education to make things happen. We do not need more of the unwashed masses having too many children who do not give a rat's behind for education!

I live in southern New Mexico and at least 2/3 of my friends and associates are hispanics. I would take a bullet for them (figuritively). But I'm not presence of mind to give my country away. Especially when it has nothing to do with good governance or doing what is right. It is all about securing a voting base to keep power. Pure self interest for those who would give my country away. And I really have a problem with the anchor baby thing.

And yes its piece work they make a helluva lot more than minnimum wage and get free housing and food with it. This myth that american workers won't or cant do this work is just that a myth and lie.

I see the communists are ganging up on McCain again. What about Obama with his fake birth certificate, SSN that will not let him work in the USA. Lets not forget Benghazi. McCain is a piker compared to Obama...the worst President in the history of the USA.

Once upon a time kids and teens used to spend summers picking to earn money for school clothes and supplies, to buy that 1st car etc.. Then bleeding hearts decided that the poor little children shouldn't have to learn about doing a honest day's work and put laws in place keeping them from those jobs!!! We have welfare recipients that can pick and wow!!!! jails chock full of prisioners that could work during the day and plenty of national guard and other services that could be employed to watch them!!!! How's about some of them illegals sitting in our prisons getting health care, 3 squares and cable TV get out to the field and pick???? I can guarentee most of those thugs never did an honest day's work and would be crying harder about the hard work far more than any legal American citizen!!!!!!

Follow the law and ship them back WHERE THEY BELONG !!! I favor a few exeptions but this political coddling is going to hurt us worse down the road. Why do I have to spend more FEEDING, CLOTHING, HOUSING, MEDICAL, ETC than my own family and they got here by BREAKING THE LAW.

Our politicians should be shipped away with them for screwing us over.

They ought to deport the rednecks out of this country and send them to Australia and Africa where they can go kill animals with their guns. Rednecks are too stupid for the 21st Century and God doesn't want them in heaven, so all they are put on earth for is to serve satan and then go burn in hell. They are like insects, just a friggin nuisance to intelligent people.

john penn, after reading your literary pen, I'd say you need to go back to school. You are aware that the only thing dumber than a redneck, is a liberal that voted for obama. That would certainly put him in the top 49%.

How does this relate to the story this discussion is about?

At least rednecks know how to use a gun and can defend themselves if someone tries to kill them which you probably cannot do.
