Majority of Americans believe illegal immigrants should be deported

People line up for assistance with paperwork for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program at the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles in Los Angeles, California, August 15, 2012.

WASHINGTON — More than half of U.S. citizens believe that most or all of the country's 11 million illegal immigrants should be deported, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Wednesday that highlights the difficulties facing lawmakers trying to reform the U.S. immigration system.

The online survey shows resistance to easing immigration laws despite the biggest push for reform in Congress since 2007.

Thirty percent of those polled think that most illegal immigrants, with some exceptions, should be deported, while 23 percent believe all illegal immigrants should be deported.

Only 5 percent believe all illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay in the United States legally, and 31 percent want most illegal immigrants to stay.

These results are in line with other polls in recent years, suggesting that people's views on immigration have not changed dramatically since the immigration debate reignited in Congress last month, according to Ipsos pollster Julia Clark.

"It's not Americans' views that are shifting. It is that the political climate is ripe for this discussion," after the November election when Hispanics voted overwhelmingly in favor of Democratic President Barack Obama, she said.

"Democrats feel that the time is right to capitalize on their wins and Republicans feel that they had a bad blow and are eager to reach out to Hispanics," she added.

Polls show that most Americans back immigration reform, although they often have different ideas of what that means, with some people favoring looser immigration laws while others want to see greater border security.

A group of eight U.S. senators are working on a bipartisan deal to enact immigration reform, the first major attempt since a similar overhaul died in Congress six years ago.

The senators' proposal calls for a full path to citizenship for illegal immigrants once they pay back taxes and a fine and wait in line behind others applying to become Americans.

A plan by Obama has similar provisions, but the senators want any move to relax immigration laws dependant on boosting security on the southern border.

Attitudes toward immigration are polarized by party, according to another the Reuters/Ipsos poll. Seventy-five percent of Republicans think all or most immigrants should be deported, compared to 40 percent of Democrats who think the same.

Republican Senator John McCain, one of the eight senators in the group, had his own encounter with citizens angered by illegal immigration on Tuesday when residents of his state of Arizona complained bitterly at a town hall meeting about the lack of security on the border with Mexico.

One man asked why troops had not been deployed to the border.

"Why didn't the army go down there and stop them? Because the only thing that stops them I'm afraid to say, and it's too damn bad, is a gun," the man said.

Another resident, Keith Smith, got into a testy exchange with McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential candidate whose views on immigration have fluctuated over the years.

"Cut off their welfare and all their stuff and they'll go back," Smith said, referring to undocumented workers.

McCain had been trying to explain his position: "You're not telling these people the truth. They mow our lawns, they care for our babies, they clean ... that's what those people do," he said.

The Arizona lawmaker, whose position on immigration hardened during the 2010 midterm elections before softening again, is a key part of the Republican side of the senators' bipartisan immigration effort.

Wednesday's Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted Friday through Tuesday and surveyed 1,443 Americans over the age of 18.

The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online poll is measured using a credibility interval. In this survey, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.

There is a way to become a citizen of the US. People who choose to come here against the law and do not apply legally for citizenship ot legal residency are in this country against the law. The law was written for a purpose, however by choosing to not enforce that law, our government is allowing illegals to live here essentially for free. Enforce the law and deport every illegal alien (including Obama's own relatives who are here illegally) and stop selectively enforcing laws. Deport all illegal immigrants and force them to follow the legal steps to legal residency. If an American just showed up in any of the countries these people come from without legal paperwork, they'd be imprisoned and eventually (maybe) deported, but would certainly not be afforded free health care and welfare.

To the American who is truly concerned about illegal immigration: don't fall for media tricks

They always like to report the one in many thousands who made it here as a way to justify taking down the borders. What they never report is the other 10,000 behind that 1 who have not and will not make it but are here for the handouts that only raise your state, local, and federal taxes all the much more. $$$$$$$$$$

I don't care what skin color you are or what planet you come from but come LEGALLY. That's all I ask. The rules on the books are fine but just need better enforcement. I love Mexican food and culture but they are abusing the situation far too much.

Reality: any of us from European lineage are here illegally. Europeans murdered Native Americans, ran them off their lands, and claimed the land in the name of a despotic king. How "legal" was that? It was vicious and inhumane. The queen of England can keep her royal butt out of Virginia and stop the pomp and circumstance of us "celebrating" any anniversary of this nation's founding. Immigration laws were established after this travesty of "justice." Native Americans and Black Americans have been kept poor because of the injustices going back to the "settlement" of this country. Become a student of history and learn the truth.

I was in college, highly full of ideals, politically correct, learned and believed much the same.

I then learned how systems could be used and abused when paying taxes for them. This is one of them.

We Europeans are NOT here illegally BW-267706… my family came here legally. That's like saying all white people in this country are at fault for slavery too… Your logic makes no sense at all. I don't know where you learned your history but you should read a bit more to see how very poorly informed you really are.

My ancestors are European, they were never slave owners… in fact they were slaves themselves for 400 years. They left their homeland where they were starving, and poorer than dirt, to come here for a better life… and even though they were uneducated and poor, they STILL managed to come here LEGALLY. Since then, they've assimilated, worked their butts off, been the subjects of discrimination themselves, educated their children, and been generally positive, productive members of society. My father and uncles all served proudly in the American armed forces as well – even BEFORE they were citizens (they were legal residents).

The Europeans who came here and took over this land from the Natives were Spaniards and English… but not all of them were murderers. Not all of them were slave owners. Where do you think the Natives came from anyway? They didn't magically appear in North America. They too immigrated here from elsewhere.

This country has evolved proudly as a nation of immigrants. The difference today is however that these 11 million people have chosen to come here by ILLEGAL means, and that is not okay.

All ILLEGAL immigrants are then the financial burden of every legal immigrant/citizen/resident of these United States. If the situation was reversed we would be deported from the country we illegally entered without a second thought. Why do you propose it should be different here?

If you don't like the laws of a country that has been internationally recognized as an independent nation since 1776, then perhaps you should return to the land of your own ancestors. The same should apply to all ILLEGAL immigrants who come to the U.S.A. in blatant disregard of our laws. If they don't like our laws, and chose not to follow them, then they should save us the trouble of deporting them and return to wherever it is they came from voluntarily.

You are talking about a war that happened almost if not at least 400 years ago. History has had territorial wars forever that is what has shaped the world as we know it today, so get over it and get on with living the best way you can. Life in this world has been a misfortune to most inhabitants for as long as the beginning of time. Wars will wage on and keep shaping life at the beckon of those that want to shape the world to their grand ideals, but as long as life is in the order it currently is which includes lawful living world wide then abide by it until that changes.

By the way, for your information if you have read history at any length you would know there were white slaves as well all around the world during the period of slavery. I will not get into percentages because that is just nit picking and not worth my time. So concluding on that point, it's not about whites, blacks, pinks, yellows, browns or reds its about money always has and will be that is what runs the world that we live in and will continue to. It's still for the most part a lawful world so abide by it or pay the consequences. End of story!!

This is not an Obama thing. This is a two-party dictatorship thing. This has been going on for decades as a result of the democrats AND the republicans. The evidence is clear. The majority wants it, but doesn’t get it. In a democracy, the majority is supposed to rule. But in America, all-too-often the majority is overruled. Therefore, this is NOT a democracy. We only call it a democracy. What we have is an illusion – the wool pulled over the eyes of a blind population of pathetic sheep who lay back and accept the enforcement of now required health care insurance via the IRS, an agency intended to collect income tax. Oh, but it’s not a tax according to Obamacare supporters. What a total lie. Hitler said that if you tell the people a big lie, enough of them will believe it to keep you in power. He was right. And that’s what’s happening in America. We live in a corporate oligarchy. We live under a ruling class of controlling and lobbying corporations and the power of the big banks. They don’t want to tighten the borders. They want a cheap labor source. That’s it. That’s all. It’s just that simple.

No it's not… it's the U.S.A. 2013. Its not a democrat thing, its not a republican thing either, nor is it about the color of ones skin, or their physical attributes as your post suggests by comparing the immigration/deportation of illegals debate to Nazi Germany.

The facts are simple: these people broke the laws of the United States of America by coming here by illegal means and should therefore be deported.

It's not about Mexicans, or South Americans, or Latinos specifically either… its about EVERY illegal immigrant who came here with complete and blatant disregard for the laws of this country. They are from a whole host of nations, some yes are South Americans, but MANY more are Asian, Russian, Middle Eastern, African and European. This isn't about color, race, ethnicity or who you or I voted for… its about enforcing the laws of this Nation I proudly call home (my parents are LEGAL immigrants BTW as is my husband).

Illegal immigrants came here with a blatant disregard for our laws and should be deported. Let them come back by legal means… it is possible and its outrageous to think that we shouldn't even try to enforce our laws. What's the point of a legal system if we don't use it to protect our rights and legal citizens?

Roger, you need to learn YOUR history. The war with Mexico started because Texas wanted to secede but Mexico wouldn't allow it. So they joined the union and we defended them. They escalated it to full scale war. We marched south and occupied most of Mexico, including Mexico City. By right of conquest, the law at the time, we could have kept it. Instead, we signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and ended the war. In that treaty, we satisfied any outstanding debts with Mexico and paid them for the territories that you mentioned. Also, mexican citizens living in those territories retained property rights. Mind you, we paid less than we were offering before the war, but to the victor the spoils. Also, the territories you mentioned, though they were claimed by Mexico, they never had enough people to settle them. Also, Spain had control of those territories for only 50 years, Mexico for only 25, and now we have had it for 165 years. In that time we have built cities and infrastructure and people have built lives. Spin it however you like, but history shows that, as you said, "might makes right".

In 1844, President James K. Polk ran on
a Democratic platform that supported manifest destiny, the idea that Americans
were predestined to occupy the entire North American continent. The last act of
Polk's predecessor, John Tyler, had been to annex the Republic of Texas in 1845.
Polk wanted to lay claim to California, New Mexico, and land near the disputed
southern border of Texas. Mexico, however, was not so eager to let go of these
territories.

Read

Try to comprehend

I know it is hard for those

That re-write HISTORY

To suit their T-Bag Trash AGENDA:

Polk started out by trying to buy the land. He sent an American diplomat,
John Slidell, to Mexico City to offer $30 million for it. But the Mexican
government refused to even meet with Slidell. Polk grew frustrated. Determined
to acquire the land, he sent American troops to Texas in January of 1846 to
provoke the Mexicans into war.

I'm sorry that the left wing cult that you belong to hasn't seen fit to educate you properly; just enough to be a useful idiot, unfortunately. American Kids; "Through No Fault Of Their Own" are paying the price with Education cuts and overall higher living costs! Cuts to entitlements could be avoided IF our government followed our Immigration Laws. How dare ANY elected official hand over amnesty when you've done nothing to seal our borders or put an end to the abuse of Birthright Citizenship!

I've made an overt effort to speak with cashiers at WalMart who see so much WIC & Food Stamp fraud by illegal aliens; we consumers are paying the higher prices to make up for their theft. The Money Center is their 1st stop after checking out, sending all their money to Mexico!

Food Stamps & WIC allow certain products, brands and quantities yet, Mexicans take more or non-approved items on WIC & Food Stamps, hold up grocery lines knowing the Mgr will "Let them have it".

As told to me by a cashier at a major retailer, One Mexican woman was making a scene, screaming at her "Just give it to me" when denied the items not approved through Food Stamps! Now, price matching fraud by Mexican.... I know some whites, blacks & Asians abuse the system, however Mexicans appear to be the worst!

I've pondered if Mexico is so corrupt that scamming is a way of life for them? When will ALL elected's care that about the low income and poor citizens who are the ones paying the price?

Go to WalMart, talk to cashiers & employees who can tell you so many stories, how they watch the abuses while making low wages, trying to support their American children without entitlements! Many have said they were indifferent to the illegal alien until being on the front lines, seeing all their theft!

Unless you are a renter in Jo Co, you have no clue how hard it has become to find 'decent' affordable housing as so many illegals are taking them up! I rented from one landlord who told me he had to replace the flooring (Now using cheap paneling) after having rented to Mexicans as they ripped up nice expensive hardwood floors, took it with them after they were evicted for NOT paying their rent. Working for a major retailer has provided me with the opportunity to speak with many who have told me similar horror stories, forcing we renters to pay higher rent and deposits. Not only do the Mexicans tear out flooring, they take ceiling fans, bathroom cabinets, etc. My Maintenance Man told me they hate renting to them because they always pay their 1st month rent and deposit, then wait to be evicted paying no more rent while trashing the apt.

When does KS become CA?? I've also been informed by more than one illegal alien they are now migrating here from CA as we have jobs and affordable housing! Americans should be your 1st priority, not the Kansas Business Coalitions and needed election donations!

Turning your backs on Americans and the growing poverty rate is creating a breeding ground for racism and dislike of Mexicans as you've chose them over your own low to middle class constituents. I've spoke with city utility workers who confirm what i've seen, more and more apartments are being vacated by native born Americans as many illegal aliens take them over! I've caught more than one messing with water meters, why?

Illegal aliens abuses of Hospitals have forced some to close in CA, why is this allowed? A family member (strong supporter of immigrants) works at the Houston Medical Center and has seen the gross amount of abuses by illegal Mexicans who in turn never pay their bills! I would love to relocate closer to her, however in TX if you are not bilingual, you have a much harder time finding a job!

It's time to pass not only H.R. 140 The Birthright Citizenship, but E-Verify!

And while we are at it, WHY does Kansas allow cash back on the Food Stamp Card?? Many get cash back, then purchase their alcohol and tobacco products!

Contrarian001 2.17 I agree with your sentiment entirely. However, most of our lazy kids think they are too good too do those types of jobs. However, we could tell benefits recipients they have to do these types of jobs to get their benefites. Like a DSS operated Merry Maids or Yard service. I agree that we pack em all up children, pregnant women and deport them. If they are illegal they have to go. I would lso enaact a stipulation of three strikes and you are out. Meaning we track deportations and anyone caught the third time is obviously a seasoned criminal and barred from ever gaining citizenship, a green card or work visa. My next question is why does our govenment feel the need to provide any benefits to illegals. Take that same money and invest in legal citizens of our country. Programs like relief kitchens where the unemployed can work to serve the indigent cooked meals, or to clean shelters for homeless citizens, etc. This in my opinion is a double win our poor benefit and some citizen getss to earn an honest wage. ALso medical relief for citizens.

Election year and all the racists were out and about

So Reagan and W were FOR amnesty?

Excellent argument against it, then. Thanks!

          Am just pointing out,

          to the pin-heads;

that their leader was for amnesty as well as their boss

          bushie2

I personally think amnesty is an excellant idea

          12 Million baby-boomers retiring

12 Million new citizens to pay taxes

          Just pass the Jobs Bill

And let us get our infrastructure taken care of

          This is the poll takers

who picked Willard(LIGHT IN THE LOAFERS) "MINT" Romney to win

          By a landslide

          Very accurate poll takers

I believe that was Rasmussen Reports and this is a Reuters/Ipsos poll (first sentence).

"On the Friday before Election Day, the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll showed the race tied at 48% for Obama and 48% for Romney.

Pundits and the campaigns have focused on a relatively small number of swing states all year. Today, the president can reasonably count on 237 Electoral College votes, while Romney can count on 206."

You can claim that they were hedging their bets but you can not rightfully claim that they were predicting a "landslide" for Romney.

I believe that every illegal immigrant should be deported effective immediately and if they want to come to the USA they can do it the legal way like everyone else does.

I'd bet money if a US citizen came into Mexico illegally they would more than likely either be deported, put in prison or shot.

That said I do believe those children who were brought to the US by their parents should have a chance at being a US citizen if only because they didn't have a choice but to come.

It would take less than 5,000 riflemen to secure our southern border against illegal foreign invaders.

The stench of rotting flesh in the mid-day sun should serve as a warning to others.

We need to construct a giant catapult, to send them back in the general direction of where they came from.

We'll need an especially powerful one to send the Kenyan back.

It'll be especially bad for the Mexicans, because they will probably not be having a water landing.

It is like somebody dumped a basket of babies on your doorstep without you knowledge or consent and the government tells you that you are responsible for them cradle to grave.

You have to house them, feed them, educate them, give them medical treatment. Then you have to support their offspring and chain family members ad infinitum.. out of you pocket while your kids go begging.

Send them home to their own countries. If their countries have problems, they need to solve them. Not us. We are not responsible for their lack of planning and strays.

I love to hear ideas that are not thought out. Like the job of rounding up 12 million people and all of them didn't come from Mexico. All of them do not speak Spanish so who do we give trhe brown shirts to? How much will it cost, it wont be cheap. How many civil right violation will be encountered? We will get some wrong accused people. What will be the economic impact, $6.00 lb lettuce? How many families will we split up to accomplish this?
