Five dead in Georgia plane crash

A small plane crash in Georgia kills five people on board and injures two others. WAGT's Lauren Walsh reports.

A small plane crashed near Thomson-McDuffie regional airport, about 25 miles west of Augusta, Ga., killing five people, WXIA-TV reported Wednesday night.

McDuffie County Fire Chief Bruce Tanner told WXIA that there were seven on board. The pilot was one of the two survivors, Tanner said.

Tanner told WXIA that the plane was trying to land at Thomson-McDuffie airport, overshot the runway and crashed in the woods about a mile east of the airport.

The flight departed from Nashville just before 6:30 p.m., Nashville station WSMV-TV reported, citing  FlightAware. The plane is listed as belonging to Pavilion Group, LLC, of Delaware, according to WSMV.

military industrial complex is working overtime to issue more weapons of mass destruction for fun and profit. Can't believe that some how it will not come home to haunt us.

.... I would say pilot error is the cause of this plane crash ... the pilot survived ... id say he has some explaining to do.

I would say that you have no basis for making such a judgement, given the little bit of information that was given in the article.

Mischief, "He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is a folly and a shame unto him." "the heart of the prudent getteth knowledge and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge" Proverbs 18:13, 15 King James Version.

In other words, get the facts before you shoot off your mouth, otherwise you look like an idiot.

I'm with Mischief..Pilot did not know what he was doing..And for you self-righteous non pilots,I'm taking bets..

        #2.4 - Thu Feb 21, 2013 11:13 AM EST

Jim, for your information, I am a pilot. And my comment to Mischief still stands. There was no information whatsoever to lead to the conclusion that the cause was pilot error. It may indeed be the case, but until the investigation is conducted nobody really knows what happened. It's quite possible that the pilot intended to abort the landing but suffered a mechanical problem. There could be other reasons, but until the NTSB does their job, it's all speculation.

How many innocent lives have to be lost due to these needless plane deaths. I think it long over due to place a ban on planes. and it is way past due to start suing the plane manufacturers for the deaths. (okay so I replaced the word "guns' with plane)

GUNS...After the Japanese decimated our fleet in Pearl Harbor Dec 7, 1941, they could have sent their troop ships and carriers directly to California to finish what they started. The prediction from our Chief of Staff was we would not be able to stop a massive invasion until they reached the Mississippi River. Remember, we had a 2 million man army and war ships... all fighting the Germans.
So, why did they not invade? After the war, the remaining Japanese generals and admirals were asked that question. Their answer... they knew that almost every home had guns and the Americans knew how to use them. The world's largest army... America's hunters! I had never thought about this....(answers.com)

It's interesting how the studio reporter attempts to put words in the mouth of the chief while he is telling what he knows: "is there a possibility he overshot the runway?"

Unless she either was there, or had another witness (who should have been named), this is just sloppy reporting, like so much other out-and-out crap journalism in America.

There will be plenty of time to find the cause and place the blame.

Any number of things might have gone wrong to produce this crash.

Totally agree. I found the interview very annoying. If I were the fire chief I would have said, "I TOLD YOU WE DON'T KNOW YET! I have go. I have more important things to do right now than to waste my time talking to you."

check the flap setting and or the throttle setting. Either pre-landing and/or touchdown checklist omitted a step or two. Bottom line, too much airspeed...

I have been a first responder to many small plain and helicopter crashes while a medic in Alaska. Small planes/helicopters do not crash well. They are not heavy machines, thus they can fly. Those of you who fly a lot also need to realize your seat is not going to save your life, because big freaking planes do not land on water, that is a crash. There could have been many reasons for this crash, including pilot error, but don't jump to conclusions....stop pretending you are a reporter for the media...

Not all guns are designed to kill things. Some are designed to start races. Some are designed to get the attention of others in a mayday situation. Some are designed for target shooting and compitition. Some are designed to get paint on others in a game situation. And yes some are designed to kill things.

Thompson Mcduffie HQU is a small town airport located in a rural area and alongside the interstate hwy. there are trees nearby and I think theres a watertower, it's very easy to be distracted there at night. It just has the one runway around 5000 ft. It's seems pretty dark at night if there's a lot of traffic on the interstate it's very easy to be distracted. The first time I landed there at night there was a couple deer on the runway that night, almost made me have a heart attack ever since I always make a low pass at night to clear the runway. It's not a bad aiport for a small Georgia town but like most small town airports it's tougher at night. I'll have to assume it was a small bizjet as it departed Nashville Tn at 6:30 pm and crashed in Thompson at just after 8:00 pm with 7 passengers aboard, it had to be a fast mover. if there was a deer on the runway he could have easily pulled up to avoid the deer and stalled overshooting the runway and settling down into the woods. I haven't flown in several years(lost medical) but night landings always made my heart rate elevate, even after the fences were installed you still find animals on the runway.I once hit a wild hog at Everglades city that was a very exciting few minutes it made him mad and scared me to death. Everyone who flies at night into rural airports is extremely aware of animals on the runway. It's alway better to make a low flyby to be sure there's nothing on the runway, overconfidence is the biggest pilot killer there is and the hardest to avoid. It's good to always go slow enough for your Guardian Angel to keepup, that's a hard lesson to learn, but if you want to be an old pilot you will.

My condolences to all the families involved, Godspeed.

Aren't we all ADULTS here, why not act like it and show some RESPECT to those who have lost someone in the accident.
