From Minnesota to North Carolina and New England, states brace for winter storm

Near white out conditions, thunder snow and strong winds swept into the Midwest, bringing transportation to a halt in several states. And in the South, a wintry mix of rain, snow and sleet created dangerous icy conditions. The Weather Channel's Mike Seidel reports.

A winter storm moved east on Friday after hammering the Great Plains, and more than a dozen states were forecast to be hit in the coming days.

Accidents were reported across the region, with one death: An Oklahoma teenager was killed when his pickup truck skidded across a slushy road.

By evening, more than 14 inches of snow had fallen on the ground in Wichita, Kan., the second-largest on record and the most the city had seen in 50 years.

The Weather Channel said snow totals would be formidable: Up to a foot of snow for Omaha, Neb., 3 to 6 inches of snow and sleet for St. Louis, 8 to 12 inches of snow for Kansas City, Mo., and 3 to 6 inches of snow for Chicago.

Weather.com predicted the storm "will spread eastward into the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley Thursday night into early Friday." Cities including Minneapolis/St. Paul, Milwaukee and Detroit were expected to experience snow.

Sleet and freezing rain were forecast for Friday morning in southern and central Ohio, West Virginia, western Virginia, parts of central and western Pennsylvania and potentially northern North Carolina.

Kansas and Missouri declared states of emergency as plows struggled to keep up with a system dumping as much as 3 inches of snow per hour, and a swath of the country from Ohio to Arkansas prepared for a coating of dangerous ice.

Snow will arrive in the Chicago metro area on Friday before traveling to the East Coast where it will develop into rain and sleet across the region and snow in the Boston area. The Weather Channel's Jim Cantore reports from Lincoln, Neb.

“I do want to urge everybody in the state: If you don’t have to travel, don’t,” Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback said. “Get out a board game, play with the kids, drink a cup of coffee.”

Flights canceled, roads closed
United, Southwest Airlines, AirTran Airways, American Airlines and American Eagle said they had canceled hundreds of flights for Thursday and Friday, and Kansas City International Airport was closed altogether. Chicago's O'Hare International Airport has already canceled more 200 flights scheduled for Friday.

Raymore, Mo., reported more than 10 inches of snow. Topeka, Kan., had 9.2 inches, the most in a day since January 1993. Alva, Okla., had more than a foot on the ground.

Advisories for snow, ice, wind or rain were posted as far south as the Texas Panhandle, as far north as Minnesota and Wisconsin and as far east as the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.

Authorities closed a 90-mile stretch of Interstate 70, which forms a belt across Kansas and Missouri.

The speed of the snowfall is “going to be overwhelming even the best snow-clearing capabilities that they have,” meteorologist Tom Niziol said on The Weather Channel. “If you don’t have anywhere to go, don’t. Please don’t.”

Along the Kansas-Nebraska state line, up to a foot and a half of snow was expected.

The University of Kansas closed for the day, as did schools in Wichita and Oklahoma City.

How bad will the snow be in your neck of the woods? With the latest winter storm front barreling its way across the US, a traffic camera on I-70 in Kansas City, Mo., shows serious snow accumulation in a time-lapse video.

The storm is vast: Earlier this week, it closed roads and stranded cars in California and dusted cactus tops in the Southwest. At a delayed tournament in Arizona, pro golfers threw snowballs at each other and retreated to the clubhouse for hot chocolate.

The same weather system could dump snow on New England for the third weekend in a row, and a stretch of Georgia and the Florida Panhandle could be doused by 7 inches of rain.

At 3 a.m. ET on Friday, weather.com predicted that it appeared "that the best chance for significant snow will be from parts of eastern upstate New York to portions of central and southern New England (away from the southern coast). This could include Boston, Concord, Portland, Worcester, and Albany."

The storm was blamed for at least one death. An 18-year-old was killed Wednesday when his pickup skidded out of control in the slush on an Oklahoma state highway, crossed into oncoming traffic and was hit by a truck.

In Arkansas, a school bus taking kids home in the afternoon slid off a steep, snowy country road and crashed, leaving the driver and three students with minor injuries, Pope County Sheriff Aaron Duval told The Associated Press.

Gee, this news place finally realized there is more to the USA than the East Coast. Wonder's never cease. Hopefully no more people die, and that everyone has heard the storm is coming their way, and they will take PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY to stay off the roads and have supplies stocked up on hand for at least a week or so. '

And yes, it's still winter, so we could still get more storms coming thru. Hope not, I'm ready for a real nice spring to arrive, with warm weather and sunny sky's. Be nice to get a tomato plant out and growing soon.

Don't you just hate that? You just get belted with the biggest storm of the century, and all they say is "East Coast Bracing for..."

You are sorta thinking "what the..."

Hope we get plenty, lots of snowmobilers sitting around anticipating....

What's wrong Dirk? You seem to have some pent up anger and frustration. Do you need a hug? Do you not like it when someone else gets some attention too? Please share with us why you would call someone you don't know a bitch and insist she kill herself. Did your mommy or daddy not love you enough?

SallyAnn "Gee, this news place finally realized there is more to the USA than the East Coast"

Not really!

From the East Coast, all the way to the Pacific Ocean.... just a lot of useless filler.

Only kiddin, I do love those amber waves of grain, and dust clouds, just wouldn't want to live there.

Shawn D -- the useless filler between Boston and San Francisco is what feeds you and manufactures a lot of you 'stuff'. Been to both cities and wasn't terribly impressed. San Franciso was more fun.

Granny, I was only kidding. I DO love the West. I have family in Colorado Springs, and travel there often. Have crossed the US over a dozen times each way, in both cars, and on motorcycles. This country is beautiful. As are the people.. just got back from visiting Montana, and Glacier NP.. AWESOME!!

It was a joke..

(and I agree, San Fran is a very fun city) Give Boston another try, I'm sure you'll like it. Its a great city as well.

Dirk -- while Sally's comment was not the best, it wasn't particularly rude OR profane. Your's was both ... thus collapsed.

Free speech doesn't mean speech without consequences. The consequence of your name calling and profanity was ... collapse. Pretty simple concept, really. Sorry you are having difficulty understanding it. Should we stick to monosyllabic words for you?

shoot double post...sorry folks you know what that means.... ...joke time, hense i offer this tidbit.

Yesterday my daughter again asked why I didn't do something useful with my time. Talking about my "doing something useful" seemed to

be her favorite topic of conversation. She was "only thinking of

me" and suggested I go down to the senior center and hang out with

the guys. I did this and when I got home last night I decided to

teach her a lesson about staying out of my business. I told her

that I had joined a parachute club.

She said, "Are you nuts? You 're over 60 years old and you're

going to start jumping out of airplanes?" I proudly showed her

that I even got a membership card.

She said to me, "Good grief, where are your glasses! This is a

membership to a Prostitute Club, not a Parachute Club."

"I'm in trouble again, and I don't know what to do... I signed

up for five jumps a week." I told her. She fainted.

Life as a senior citizen is not getting any easier but sometimes

What do you disagree with? That speech has consequences?

Unfortunately, Newsvine doesn't give us a simple way to disagree (i.e. a down arrow), so the only other option is respond, or report. Now, generally I don't report comments just because I disagree with them. HOWEVER, Dirk's (continued) profanity deserves to be collapsed as a direct violation of the COH. Thus reported.

Guess it's hit and miss here; somehow, Dirk and the demos vs. repubs took over. Nothing new; idiot commenter, politics percieved as real political work but just isn't in any way taking over the real topic. Sometimes, I get lucky and real comments, topical ones, rear their heads and is a good board.

Not today I'm guessing. More about 'handouts, red states vs. blue states (is there any reality in that anymore.... really?), etc...' .

This is winter.... I live in Ohio... guess what? EXPECT SNOW AND ICE!!

I've already prepared, set the alarm for an hour earlier to safely get to work, compensating for what may happen, the 'what if's'... there's alot to be said for hunkering in, letting nature be nature.

It seems that many have forgotten winters' past; snow on Halloween, Thanksgiving, days snowed in ... it's really been abnormal that we've had milder winters, but given the solar flares and tectonic activity changing dominant ocean currents, weather patterns changing and all - some have made big bank on it, calling it anything but what it really is, others too young to remember what had been considered to be 'normal' (though this changes, perceptually especially, generation to generation).

Be safe all.... if too bad or too ill at ease, listen to your guts... call off.

So you got to put up with the snow for awhile...some other states have to also...no big deal.

Where I'm at, there are a bit of Amish folk... yes, the country. But, even having lived in the suburbs before moving, we'd gotten used to getting ready for power situations as well as extra supplies, food storeage, etc... when winter months came because we never knew exactly what was coming (and still don't, especially in northeast Ohio., all is speculative).

It used to be all helping all; now, most are worried about fender benders costing them their homes and savings; a small bump because of ice or snow, push vehicles along- perhaps exchange some information if damgage involved, but known risks and common sense in dealing with weather, work understanding if late, and all else that some of us remember.

Some will get this, some won't; but now a fender bender is equatable to $7K or more, lawsuits emminent, no loyalty per being late to work as 21 others are waiting in line for your job... and that's really all that's there any more, jobs - not careers - and god forbid cable, internet, or electricity should be out for a day or two. How many can even re-light their gas furnace?

Point is, especially when there's not much news (which anymore isn't a problem, all that's global is now our business as well, celebrities taking as much court as what's really important) we get 'tantalized' with news bits about........ wait for it..... what is TYPICAL winter weather!

Granted, in this 'age', we've got more sophisticated equipment and monitoring that does do well in fore- warning us in events of extreme YET normal variations of winter weather, spring and summer tornados, etc... and is life saving and helpfull to say the least. But, and this is a big but (ha ha) it does not mean that weather has gotten crazier, that common sense and logic shouldn't be applied, and that people, such as myself and family, can't find it to be something not only liveable but in some ways enjoyed as part of life and nature. Humbling and realistic if nothing elAse; it's all part of life and seasons.

Again... be safe, be carefull, and be realistic. We are part of nature, of the world; not plastic, not robots, not animals that can no longer tolerate or take part in natural changes. Use our heads and we'll be just fine. We wouldn't even be here if our ancestors hadn't.....

As with any natural disaster, we need to prepare ourselves accordingly. The hurricane on the East Coast and their subsequent two snow storms, the wintry weather on the West Coast, and now through the Midwest, were all predicted well ahead of time. If everyone took those warnings seriously, there would be no deaths nor would any rescuers be put in harms way to help those who were foolish enough to ignore the warnings.

Having grown up in the Midwest, I was taught to have at least two week's worth of food and water available in the winter, along with an alternative fuel source (if possible), warm clothing and blankets, an alternative cooking source (think butane camp stove), keep the gas tank on the car AT LEAST half full at all times (in case I got stuck in an unpredicted storm), keep a survival kit and blankets in my car, and candles and matches and/or flashlights (I like the the ones I can shake for power rather than the battery operated type). I taught this to my children, too, and give these adults an occasional reminder as winter approaches (that's the parent in me, I guess).

I remember looking forward to "snow days" from school, both as a child, and again, as a parent. They were "Make Cookies Day", "Let's Have Hot Chocolate Day", and "Chili for Dinner" days. They were days that slowed us down from the rush of everyday life, and gave us the opportunity to spend more parent & child time together. Dad got the fun of helping the kids build a snow fort, and Mom got a chance to fuss with her daughter's hair, trying out different hair-do's. Those were the days.

EVERYONE: Stay home and off the roads when requested by officials; and if you can call in to work for your "snow day", by all means, do so. Even if your company frowns on it, I have to ask: Is it worth taking the chance with your life in order to keep your job? I know having a job is important to your family, but if they don't have you, they lose more than financial instability! Hope everyone can enjoy their forced slowdown.

Oh the media! I get sooo sick of the dramatization from the media. IT'S WINTER... THE N.E. IS USE TO IT AND SO IS THE MIDWEST!! Winter weather is not NEWS - even when it is dramatized!

The only reason it seems like a bid deal is: Back in the 50's I lived in Illinois. We would get heavy winters and live through them until spring. The East Coast and West Coast had no idea what was going on because the media sources were not super mega stations that broadcast news from out of state about weather. The truth is, back in the 50's and 60's I lived in Illinois and Pennsylvania. During the 60's. in PA we had a storm that dumped over 4 feet of snow and winds that caused drifts to the height of 20 feet. Cranes had to be brought in to open roads. So all we are seeing now is MORE media coverage, more reporters and more reporters and media stations wanting the highest ratings. They all want to have the gift to predict the weather, but everyone should know. There is not one person that can predict, what a snow storm will do, until it is hovering over you. Sure, with the doplar radar they can see the strength and the direction of the storms, but even that can change on a moments notice. Everyone just needs to know how to get through winter. If not, move to Wisconsin for a winter month and get to know what it's like. Even here in MD, in recent years, we have had to dig out of 4 feet of snow on our driveway. How. Simple. I found a guy with a front loader. My driveway was open in 1 hour. People just need to learn one thing. When the media says it will snow heavy, or get heavy rains, or hurricane winds, don't rush out to the store to get supplies. You should have them, on hand, anyway. Why wait for a storm to hit to get them. I have been through thick ice and snow and deal with it when it gets here. No big story needed to scare the general unchallengeable people.

It snowed 15.5 inches at my farm. About what they said it would. This is about normal. I laugh about all the hysteria. All the "I can't get out of my driveway. Put on proper mud and snow tires, they still make them you know, problems solved. Pick up an extra set of wheel for your vehicle have them mounted and balance, then in late fall put them on or have them put on and there you go. I run around in an F-150 2 wheel drive and all I do is put about 250 pounds of sand bags in the bed. Because it's winter, this stuff happens.

Common sense and a little preparation goes a long way. Yeah, the kids new to the winter driving game you expect to have problems and get stuck. After a few winters though, it shouldn't be a huge deal. Now if they would only plow the secondary roads and not just the main ones. Gonna have to call and ask the public works folks to get off their duffs and get it done. They have had it easy the past two winters and one storm this year they should have lots of salt and sand left fro years they didn't use any, so I think they could make an extra effort on this one. BEFORE the next one rolls in Monday-Tuesday.

Since the winter turned nasty, and they are having the coldest winter in China in 35 years, I have not heard a peep out of the liberal so-called scientists. I got used to hearing that every cold spell, hurricane, tornado, small cool front, slight dry spell, and the flat tire on my car is a result of Gloabal Warming. Will some liberal please try to humiliate me, shame me, tell me I know nothing, call me a conservative "Non Believer" just once today so I can feel back to normal

Dave, we got 15 inches here. But since a foot of snow is equal to 1 inch of rain, I don't think this will break the drought. But, we a glad to get it. It will kill the bugs, so they won't be as bad next spring. It did show how long it had been since the last heavy snow, most seem to have forgotten how to drive in snow. But, the plows are out and in a few days, the streets will be passable again, so it could be worse.

What pray tell are the signs that climatic change is happening?

Why have the 12 warmest global years on record since the 1800s occurred in the last 14 years? That's right, the warmest year on record, happened in the last 14 years; the 2nd warmest year on record, the last 14 years, the 3rd warmest year on record, the last 14 years....................get the picture?

I agree that precautions should be taken regarding storms, and common sense used when driving, etc., but remember the days when a foot of snow - in winter - was just a foot of snow, not something that we got "slammed" with, and not cause for a major headline? People shoveled their driveways, put the tire chains on, and got on with life, and they did it without dire warnings coming from weather services or elected officials. Were we tougher then, or are we in fact more sensible now?

C'mon now, it IS slammed, as many of these areas are not used to this much snow AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, our road crews are not prepared to clear and treat this amount. SLAMMED is a foot here, we don't get all that at once...maybe a foot per winter season at the most. You must be from the north where they actually clean the streets!! I am getting on with life as I had to go to work regardless & pray that I make it home on the untreated streets to my 4 children.

Actually, I agree with Hans, and I have lived in Nebraska all my life. When I was younger we used to get hit with storm after storm. Lots of snow. Actually, I'm sure we got more snow on average than we do now, or at least that's what I remember. But like Hans said, not a big deal was made about it. Most of us shrugged and said, well, this is Nebraska...buck up. We cleaned off the sidewalks and went on our way. Today, they make it a huge news event every time it snows, lol. I think people as a whole were just tougher back then and just learned to deal with it.

I grew up in Colorado. When we were kids if we woke up and there was snow we immediately went to our radio and listened for those beautiful words "district 60.... closed " we thought "YES YES YES snow day!"

Mom and dad on the other hand were thinking "oh no all three are going to be cooped up inside..all day.. with each other"

Our fun day turned out to be not so fun at the start when daddy would say "ok go shovel the sidewalks, put salt down and don't get it on the grass."

I live in upstate New York, where "slammed" doesn't apply for anything less than 18 inches. I do agree that we were tougher years ago, though. When I was in school, 8 inches meant leave for the bus stop sooner because you had to wade through snow almost knee-deep. Now the schools close on the basis of a threat of 5 inches, which may or may not show up.

I understand it does not sound like a lot of snow to many people, however my father lives in eastern Colorado. He is a rancher and is in the middle of calving season. Trust me, it is a major thing to calve out in the middle of a blizzard. You have to move cattle, feed extra, and keep an eye on any calves born during the storm so they don't freeze. That storm is right in the middle of cattle country, and that is partly the reason why it is such a big deal. Most people get to stay inside during a nasty snow storm. Ranchers have no choice but to be out in the middle of it.

We had a Majestic once. You forgot the part about pulling a chair up to the stove and putting your feet (with wet socks still on them) into the oven to dry! I live in New England, and we chose (years ago) to live with wood stoves, oil lamps, and a hand pump at the sink. Hard living at times, but I have good memories of people rushing to the kitchen on cold mornings to dress by the stove, and of me sweeping snow off the attic stairs that went to my bedroom. Dogs and cats liked to park themselves near that stove too. I agree, let it snow!

Never had a majestic but my parents heated our whole 18 room house with just a very large wooddstove and a few box fans. The ivingroom was the most popular place in the house. Many morning I wouldd wake up to see all other 8 of my family members curled up somewhere in the livingroom. On the third floor where my room was you could see your breath most new england winter nights.

On another note, you'd think in the drought striken western states they would welcome precipitation in any form they could get it.

Hans, sorry for the large print, first of all. Was doing something last nite that required it. But on to what you posit.

Yes , it's a foot of snow, but after around 10-12 years of reasonably mild weather during winter months, to be hit with a little sow means that the nation of couch potatoes, soft and flabby from too much pizza, has forgotten how to live real life.

We've forgotten what it is to shovel snow, or even know where that shovel is. Or we've run out of gas for the snow blower. Or we think those tires that say mud and snow mean that, driveable in mud and snow, regardless of six to 12 inches of same.

In other words, we've gotten soft and getting softer. We expect, not want, government to get that damned snow and ice gone, but are unwilling to pay taxes to get it done. We can't not pay for services and then expect them to be there only when we want or need them. We have to do our share, although I doubt we will.

Round here i would prefer they not touch it . I believe the city motto is...If ya cant fix it....make it worse.

we live in Phoenix. But i grew up in Colorado. My oldest was always wanting to "learn " how to shovel snow. So in 2006 we went to Colorado for christmas. That was the year DIA was closed due to a 4 foot snow (for 3 days). any way when we got to Pueblo my son was stoked. The next morning I woke him up and he was sooo excited. We went outside he asked how much is it, told him about two feet. he said "Ok do you have a snow blower" I said yeah wait here I'll go get it from the garage. When I came back the look on his face was complete confusion. I handed a snow shovel to him and told him "here is the model year 92, USA made Nathan powered snow blower." ;-)

For those who have to deal with kids like that, heres a simple solution, remind em if YOU have a heart attack...HE has to get a job rather then " hey dad can i get a few bucks?"...the show will magically disappear in a heartbeat.

He just shrugged his shoulders , smiled and asked for the owners manual, so he "could safely operate the machine."

He didn't start whinning until it snowed overnight for the next three days and he had to get out there and do it all over again.

By the way when do they stop saying "dad can I have a few bucks" He is now 20 in the Navy stationed in Florida, he still calls "mom, can you put some money in my account?"

Most of the kids were go out and buy a new car out of the gate which leaves them more like 200. Then insurance and gas. Then poof, no more money. lol

That last 5 or 6 days before we got paid sucked. lol.

                      Sad

I think I made a little more, but I can't remember for sure could go look at LES (don't know why I have kept them) I went to college before I joined, so I started out as PFC, ETS'd as Sgt.

The oldest as soon as he got out of RTC (basic) and finished A-school(AIT) he bought a truck.

like you said "Poof" he is finding out not so easy come, but easy go. He probaly agrees the last 5-6 days stink. means he has to actually eat galley(mess hall) food.

I tried to tell him but you know how they are "mom don't know what she is talking about she was in a long time ago.... things have changed."

I just laugh and say "ummm didn't i say the wheels turn S-L-O-W in the military , they havn't changed that much."

I started at the bottom. E-1. :) I just looked it up. It was 880 a month gross. That was when gas was 1.25 a gallon even. They get 1500 a month now. That is more then I made as an E-5. lol. Still the money seems to go poof even easier. lol

he said gas is 3.79 on base and it takes him 60-70 to fill tank.

I tell him "ninny if you walk the 200 yards from the barracks to the clinic (he is corpsman)you could save fuel."

LOL he says if he walks that means he has to get up earlier(god forbid!) PT is from 0600-0700. he has to be at clinic at 0800. You would think that he could walk that far in an hour.

At least if you fall on the ice and break a hip someone will come help you onto a gurney and into a nice warm ambulance.

If you slip on the ice and wind up doing the splits... those that pass by just laugh.

4 seasons? Hmm, Minnesota only seems to have 2:

                      1) Hockey season

                      2) Road construction

Two weeks ago in Boston, we got 24 inches. Last weekend we got only around 6 inches. This weekend they are predicting anywhere from 6 to 12 inches in the Greater Boston area.

We handle it just fine. Its the high winds, and power outages, or flooding from storm surge tides on the oceanfront properties that can put a bad day in your bucket.

But as far as the snow accumulation ...NO PROBLEM! Stay off the roads, let the plows do thier job, and when the sun comes out, its beautiful. Until it gets all dogpiss yellow, and black from road spray. Then you just pray for quick melt away. We are used to it, and usuallypretty well prepared. I'm sure they are in places like Chicago, and Minneapolis as well. Its the places that don't get it, that fall apart with a dusting on the roads.

The issue for people that live in the KC area is, they took all the money out of the budgets for snow removal.

On both sides of the state-line. We have like 10 trucks for the KCMO side for the whole area. They usually run out of sand and salt in the first half of winter. So that leaves them just plowing.

And everyone around here knows to stay off i-35. It becomes a death trap even in 1 inch of snow and heavy rains for that mattter.

If we want to get out of our neighborhood before Sunday, we have to shovel the whole street. Has been that way for at least 6 years. lol It is for good neighbor bonding time though.

copy and paste this (soon because loop changes every half hour) and I'll tell you what the plan is and see for yourself... stop 1 foot forecast snow for Lincoln NE with "Dragon effect"!

latest dragon activity 7 am central repeat of yesterday at 5 pm --

                          - gulf of Mexico sweep east

-sweep "dry slot" from Mexico up the mountain range effect equalize pressure for stymy 4 corners low

-counter clockwise wind rotation Joplin stretch St. Louis effect drop storm south and east

-counter clockwise wind rotation upper Michigan effect equalize pressure, enhance dry slot east NE

Thus far looks like I developed correct formula for my goal.

I think you all should know what's really going on. If you can is key, because the government refuses to play truthful.

so Lincoln is receiving dry slot, result light flurries. Thus far, predicted 1" before 9am is none. It started snow about 11am, predicted 4.5" by 3pm will most certainly be less than 1"; that is 4.5" under totals forecast . Foretold Dragon activity clearly indicated again.

hey hey Scooter, if you've found the club yet, welcome to the club.

the storm total snow at Lincoln 4.5" and dry slot southeast corner of Nebraska 3-6". The forecast without "dragon effect" was 10-12". My satellite show is really the big news, every point "dragon atmosphere sweep" showed well!

Snow overload went Missouri and this morning the counter clockwise easy to see at upper Michigan. The dry slot brought in on target. Happily, I have 24 hours of satellite loop recorded and will get it to youtube and photobucket, wouldn't want fault assign, remiss in the show is elsewhere.
