Woman shot by oven while trying to cook waffles

An 18-year-old Florida woman was only slightly injured this week when she was shot by her friend's oven, police said.

Aalaya Walker was visiting a friend in St. Petersburg Monday when they decided they wanted some late-night waffles, The Tampa Bay Times reported. So Walker began preheating the oven — unaware that her friend, JJ Sandy, 25, was storing a magazine from his .45-caliber Glock 21 in the oven.

The magazine exploded about 9 p.m. ET, spraying casing fragments at high speed and striking Walker. She managed to pick some of the fragments out of her leg and chest and then took a bus to the hospital, where she was treated and released.

Sandy told police he'd stored the gun in a drawer but had stored the magazine in the oven. Four rounds were in the 13-capacity magazine, he said.

Gun and ammunition references indicate that the .45-caliber bullets commonly used in Glocks can explode at temperatures as low as 280 degrees — or even lower if they've been exposed to heat for a long time, which can degrades the structure.

Sandy "stated that he does not have a temperature gauge on the oven so he estimates the temperature based on how far the knob is turned," according to the police report, which was obtained by the Times. "I observed that the inside of the oven was damaged."

In a memorable 2007 episode, the popular science TV show "Mythbusters" found in several experiments that bullets can explode "once the oven was hot enough."

"Without a gun barrel to contain and direct the propellant gases, the bullets did not develop enough speed to pierce the glass or steel portions of the oven. The shell casings actually caused more damage than the bullets," it found — essentially reproducing what police said happened Monday.

Sandy wasn't charged because he had a proper concealed weapons permit, The Tampa Tribune reported.

I'm not sure why someone would store a loaded magazine in an oven. Hopefully they find somewhere else to hide it in the future. Last week I preheated the oven in my girlfriend's kitchen only to find she had stowed some pots and pans in there. I'll be checking first from now on. I was also once tending a burnpile that a box of .22 ammunition found it's way into. Thankfully, it doesn't appear anyone in the above story was seriously injured!

Not a good argument for gun control. An EXCELLENT argument for birth control.

        What a responsible gun owner!

I can't wait for the NRA to release a statement saying "The only thing that stops a bad oven with a gun, is a good oven with a gun!"

Before preheating an oven, why not open and inspect the chamber? Many people store odds and ends in the oven and a visitor should check. Still, pretty sure I have never stored loaded magazines in my OVEN!

First, I can't imagine why anyone would think to do this...why there? I mean, that couldn't POSSIBLY go wrong, right?

Secondly, responsible gun owners are fighting like hell against the ban-all-guns soapbox preachers....idiots like this are not helping our cause at all.

No one was shot. The girl was injured by an explosion.

"Hmmmmm.. I have people coming over... maybe safer if I diasble my pistol.... I don't want to bother unloadign it and having a pile of bullets... lets just stash the mag someplace.... oh, hell.. no one will look int the oven! Sounds like a script from a sitcom.

"It is only funny until someone gets hurt!"

Can you imagine how sparsly populated America would be if all the people who had done something stupid were "poofed" out of existance! <g>

Not only do you not put bullets in the oven, you don't put store anything flammable inside the oven. You don't put anything flammable - EVER - on the stove either. Once you get in the habit of that, it's only a matter of time before your bullets go off, or the flammable item catches on fire.

Shouldn't you look inside an oven that's not yours before preheating it? Not that I condone keeping ammo in your oven, you should make sure there is nothing in it like roasting pans and stuff. I sometimes put my cat in the oven to keep her safe while I'm vacuuming my apartment. She likes warm places so it's OK.

I can't help wondering why he stashed his ammunition clip in the oven, of all places. What's the deal?

It wasn't a "clip", it was a magazine.

it is a crime to store it where it can be subjected to unstable environment

it is a crime to store it where it can be accessed by anyone other than the owner (think children)

violation of these will revoke your permit to own guns and result in all your guns to be confiscated.

why can't law-abiding gun owners agree to these?

Because it infringes on their Constitutional right to be stupid.

Unfortunately, background checks can't detect stupidity. Maybe he stores his gasoline canisters in the fireplace.

Seriously, should a person that dumb really own a gun?

ZeivahFly, the gun was not in the oven, the magazine holding 4 bullets was. Additionally, not every gun is a Glock or an AR-15 like the media says. In this stupid story, the bullets were apparently Glock bullets, even though there is no such thing. I own quite a few guns, none of which are Glocks, or AR-15s. I also have a concealed carry permit. I will admit that the oven as a hiding place for a loaded magazine was a bit dumb, but the gun was still not at fault, the owner was. A gun is an inanimate tool until a human puts it into use. This was still failure on the part of a human, not a weapon.
